Adoption Reforms - Wealth of Information
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-12
I have owned this book for over 15 years. I was active in adoption reform for 13 years and assisted in writing legislation to improve adoptee rights.

Nile's book was one of the most concise, accurate and informative books I found in those 13 years. Many times I needed the background of the maternity homem or orphanage. This was an almost imposible task. Adoption Agencies provide a wealth of information about themselves, but little about the maternity home the birthmothers stayed in.

It is imperitative to an adopttee to know something about the surroundings of their mother during her regnancy. This is the only time the two shared, and it is the only link they have when they start to question their heritage. Understanding how a maternity home was run gives them insight to the mindframe of their mother.

The most outstanding thing about this book is that adoption researchers find that it lists homes that were almost unheard of. Some of these homes were private and there are even actual names of mothers who placed their children for adoption.

When I got the book it was already out of print and I had to order it from Mr. Niles himself. It was one of the most meaningful books I bought in my career of adoption reform.

Anyone interested in adoption history and orphanages will find it well worth the trouble and time.

I loved this book, it's brilliant! As an (immanent) mom to be, I was feeling down cos of my ever-expanding belly and thighs and this brought joy to my day.

This is a wonderful book that will guarantee hours of fun for all moms or midwives. It had all the nursing colleagues at my hospital in stitches! It would make a fanastic baby shower gift for any expectant or new mom.
This is packed full of superstitions that I have never ever heard before, so its thoroughly original as well as well as being very well-researched.
What I most liked about it was that it was very easy to read, full of just the beliefs and superstitions rather than lots of boring academic text.

The 5th edition of the Birth Atlas was donated to the Skills Lab at the Medical Campus, University of Pretoria. Since it appears to be very old and unique I would like to know the date of this publication. I would appreciate it very much if you could let me know. Thank you Dr Ina Treadwell

As a childbirth educator for over 35 years, I totally agree and understand where this book is coming from. I am deeply saddened by where the USA is in the birthing realm. Great book!!

Birth crisis was introduced to me after hearing Sheila speak at the 25th Australia homebirth conference in June 2007. Sheila is a very inspirational woman in reading this book has allowed me to be more forthright in my own midwifery practice in caring for women within the hospital setting. I have started to see the effects that obstetric management of labours more clearly and begun to question why we continue to abuse women in this manner. I will become more vigilant in my observations of obstetric management and ask WHY more often. Thankyou Sheila

As a training Lactation Cunsultant in a local hospital in Israel, I have been working with breastfeeding women for over two years. Often, differences in opinion between the Nursing Staff and Lactation Consultants surface. I found this book to help promote one uniformed goal; the breastfeeding mother. With all of Ms Biancuzzo's up-to-date research and information, and with the book's easy to read format, this book is a welcomed addition to my library.

This book is like a pocket (almost) sized version of my maternity nursing textbook. Very practical size to carry in your bag or keep in your locker if you are a new nurse or a nursing student. Covers health promotion, conception, pregnancy and complications of pregnancy, labor and labor complications, postpartum and postpartum complications, newborn assessment, complications and nutrition, and medications. This book also has an English-Spanish translation appendix, cultural beliefs appendix and nursing dx section. Pt teaching is also addressed at various points throughout the text. Handy, handy, handy!!!

I bought the first edition of this book after transfering from a multisystem ICU to a neuro-surgical ICU. I have found it to be a very Nurse friendly book. I have several resources for neuro, some are very complex.Joanne Hickey has put together information on a very cerebral topic that is for Nurses from novice to expert.

Love neuroscience-get this book!

The Clinical Practice of Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing is an excellent overview of the care and management of the neuroscience patient. It's perspective is largely that of neurosurgery/ trauma nursing and is focused predominately on the acute phases of care. This text is arranged topically by disease/ injury process with the introductory chapters oriented towards concerns in neuroscience nursing. The depth and breadth of the material is suitable to meet my needs in the neuro-intensive care unit of the Level I trauma center in which I work. It provides a ready and easy to use reference with solid explantions of disease process, complications, treatment, pharmacology, and nursing considerations. I recommend this text to new nurses in neuroscience at my hospital regularly and I am currently using it to prepare for certification in neuroscience nursing.
