Helpful in understanding 'difficult' behaviour

As health care professionals, we all encounter clients with a greater need to 'control' their experience, especially surrounding childbirth. Many caregivers find this situation difficult and wish that relationships could be more productive and less confrontational. Understanding why some women make more demands than others can help us to 'read' their needs in a more compassionate way -- as sometimes it is a healthy response to a history of abuse (acknowledged or hidden). We then stand a better chance of working with all women in ways that promote healing. I found this book very helpful.

I found this book to be a great tool to add to my base of knowledge. As a CBE,Doula I come across women that have had previous abuse issues. This book gives you the awareness to handle (not treat) these issues in a sensitive way. It has different sections for Midwives,Doulas,CBE'S, ETC. I found it worth adding to the reference library.

This book was a good read for survivors of sexual trauma and abuse. There is very little out there that understands the triggers that a natural process like childbirth and pregnancy brings up in a survivor. This book really addressed survivor issues and needs. It also identified triggers and issues that may have been lurking in someone's mind but not necessarily identified. The book also differentiates the concepts between those people who have already disclosed and have gone thru some type of therapy and those who have not yet disclosed.

Groundbreaking work, invaluable resource

An excellent resource for any women who has survived abuse and anyone who cares for women. The second section is invaluable to those who have a hard time communicating with or feel misunderstood by their providers. Recommended whether you are pregnant or not.

If you provide maternity care for mothers and babies you must read this book. The information is presented in a very user friendly way, complete with many mnemonics to help you quickly recall vital information in an emergency. Thoroughly researched and cited, this book is chock full of information and helpful hints. The differential diagnoses are particularly welcome, especially when trying to assess the etiology of pain. Highly recommended.

This book served a vital purpose in what I'm having to achieve in clinical. I'm just now doing my OB-GYN rotation and I think this book is great. It has already helped me with what I need to know. OB-GYN is not my strong point, but this book has provided me with easy to understand, experience based information right at my fingertip.

This is not a book you'll curl up with in one afternoon. The writing is a bit technical and dry, so it's better read in increments.

BUT... if you want to re-examine what you know about childbirth and breastfeeding, this book is rock solid. The book is straight-forward and factual. It will give you food for thought that you will digest over a long period.

This book will affect you as a practitioner. I highly recommend it.

Finally someone dares to declare that having a medicalized birth is not the norm, just as bottlefeeding isn't the norm... I'm a family physician with a breastfeeding clinic since 1996, and I had begun noticing notable differences in the types of lactation problems between the midwife-assisted births and the gynecologist-assisted ones. Unfortunately, women are not aware of this and they themselves request epidurals for pain-free births. Little do they know that they are harvesting a multitude of related post-partum & breastfeeding problems, for themselves AND baby. Once this is explained to them, they often realise the connections and wish they had known... This is a book every practitioner doing deliveries should read. We really ought to assist laboring women with non-pharmacological pain-relieving techniques, not just medications.

A wonderful book

Maternity Ward

This book was a very moving account of the life of the crew of a B-24 Liberator during WWII. Based on the daily writings of William Fay, the details of his stories have been thoroughly researched and explained by the author, so the reader knows exactly what William Fay was describing in his diary. The tragedy of war and death, the daily hardships of living in the windy, hot desert, and the tenseness of always awaiting news of the next mission, have all been weaved into a fascinating story.

"Maternity Ward" not only serves up a wealth of new information for Ploesti buffs, it provides a clear introduction for readers unfamiliar with the dramatic low-level attack on Romanian oil. The diary format and numerous personal photos give the book an air of immediacy not found in other histories of the 1943 mission. We feel a palpable sense of loss for the young men who did not return, relief for those who did. Stephen Ambrose cites "Maternity Ward" prominently in his recent "Wild Blue" -- with good reason, as Ms. Aronowitz's book is a "must-read" for anyone interested in the difficult conditions faced by airmen in the Mediterranean Theatre, and the courage they displayed in carrying out their duties.

VERY well done. Mystery solved after 60 years.

For those of us devoted to the study of Operation Tidal Wave, Ms. Aronowitz has performed a great service. This excellent work gives us not only a close look at Bill Fay and his comrades who flew the low-level Ploesti raid of 8-01-43, but also re-writes aviation history by describing WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED to John Ward and his crew and aircraft. No other account of this mission reveals Ward & Anderson's Ionian Sea ambush and their subsequent amazing journey. All other accounts I've read have the entire crew being killed at the target. Great investigative reporting. Also, obviously a work of great love, which I heartily endorse, given that these young men took off knowing not only the danger, but the necessity of their actions. They thought that if they destroyed the target, other young men would not have to follow them. Well done, Ms. Aronowitz.

This text is a comprehensive presentation of the knowledge and skills needed by an RN to effectively managed a patient before, during, and after delivery. Tucker has provided all aspects of the procedure in an easy to read, straight forward format. The book includes chapters on maternal and fetal physiology and FHT instrumentation and technology. Of particular note, are chapters on uterine activity monitoring, baseline fetal heart rate changes, and interpretation of reassuring and non reassuring FHT patterns. Interventions and obligations are discussed. A quick method for assessing FHT is given. A standard of care for FHT monitoring and care of the intrapartum and postpartum patient is also included. Nursing diagoses are listed for the intrapartum and postpartum period. Culterally sensitive care is discussed as well. Documentation, risk reduction, and education are discussed. Appendixes add information on risk factors, Leopold's maneuvers, protocals of cervical ripending, care of patients in preterm labor with information on tocolytics, and sample tracings are given. This book is an excellent guide and may be used for reference after its initial reading.

Best pregnancy book ever.
This is not your ordinary pregnancy book. It focuses mainly on the spiritual aspects of pregnancy and labor and delivery. It's written by a midwife and therefore it highly stresses a natural delivery. I think the author is very much in touch with her higher self and she has come to many of the conclusions described in the book through her self-awareness. Therefore this may not be the book for the skeptical scientist who requires scientific proof. However, I am a physician and I found this book very helpful. It encouraged me to have a home birth. As a consequence of my natural deliverymy baby came out very strong and alert.
I highly recommend this book to those who want to focus on the spiritual and energetic aspects of their pregnancy and delivery, and especially to those who are committed to bringing their babies into this world alert and AWARE.
