This book is an odd blend of good massage information and extreme paranoia about "dangerous" massage techniques. There are indeed techniques that are not appropriate in pregnancy, but this text makes it sound as though ordinary thumb friction strokes will cause miscarriages. There are better books on the market that explain the necessary precautions without encouraging such a fearful attitude.

Title sounds much more promising as the content is. Still looking for some really good "Pocket Guide for Student Midwives".
Charts are not bad.

I, too, am having problems getting this item shipped, and will be canceling my order. I initially ordered this item (which was and has always since been shown as in stock) on Aug 29th with 2 day shipping. It was initially estimated to deliver Sept. 1. The delivery estimate just kept rolling forward! I called Amazon several times, upgraded to 1 day shipping, still no product. I called again Friday Sept. 8 and was told it must just be a glitch with my specific order, so I should cancel and re-order. I did, with 1 day shipping, and was told since it was listed as 'in stock,' it would be shipped within 24 business hours and would be delivered Sept. 12. The product was not shipped yesterday (Spet 11) and my delivery estimate has changed today (Sept 12) to Sept. 15-Sept. 20!!!! UUGGGHHHH!! Save yourself the frustration, do not order from Amazon, they just don't seem to have the ability to ship this product!!

I bought this book searching for information on breastfeeding my premature infant. Most breastfeeding books only devote a paragraph, or at most a few pages, to this topic. I was excited to find a whole book on the topic, but sadly disappointed when it arrived, as the book is clearly meant as a textbook for NICU nurses. It provides information on topics in list form, referring to the patient and parents as third-party participants. It uses medical terms and offers very brief descriptions of techniques. I was looking for practical advice, but this wasn't it.

I am a registered midwife and this dictionary would be too basic even for a first year midwifery student, as the definitions have so little content as to be useless. Unfortunate but true! Hardly any appendices, and it says it is evidence based where possible but there is no evidence based information anywhere.

What I highly recommend instead is the latest, 2004? 2003? edition of Balliere's Dictionary for Midwives (Denise Tiran - editor)- in depth definitions that give accurate, very useful information and fantastic, useful appendices. This one is a wise investment and far more illustrated that the so-called Illustrated Dictionary of Midwifery which has hardly any illustrations compared to Balliere's and of poor quality.
