This book would not be so bad if it were better organized and had a better index in the back. A glossary would also be a great addition. The organization of the book causes me to spend way too much time trying to find the information. The index is poor which is another huge frutration. Because the information on a particular topic is so scattered, if you found the info. once you may never find it again. When I am looking for information on a particular topic I do not want to have to read half the book gleaning a bit out of every chapter. This book frustrated me to the max. The information is all there if you can just find it. I will sell it with glee and purchase another OB nursing book for my shelf for reference purposes.

Good book, even though it's required

Review Date: 2008-01-18
This book was required for my last semester of nursing school (OB/Peds), but I still think it's a good book. It does a good job of combining OB & Peds instead of having two separate (and often confusing) references as we've had in other subjects.
~~~It's now near the end of the semester and I wanted to amend my review of this book. I tried to change my rating to 4 stars and couldn't. I personally feel that the book contains too much information, half of which was not covered the entire semester. Even in the parts we have covered, the information is often repeated in two or three times, greatly adding to the bulk of the book. The information could have been written in a much more concise manner, and is often verbose and wordy.
This book made remember the stark contrast between my "medical intervention" birth and the healing I felt giving birth naturally. The first one made me feel raped, the second made me feel like I'd run a marathon, and won.
I recommend this book to everyone who is pregnant or supporting someone who is pregnant.
Lois Freedman's book talks about a subject that is often missing from the masses of books on pregnancy out there: the emotional aspects of this most important time in a woman's life. For so many woman, being pregnant brings up fear and pain and yet this is never fully discussed with her health care providers or even her closest friends. For me, the section on mother-loss was especially important because I had lost my mother in my teens. I found the time of pregnancy and new mothering difficult even though I had great support from my husband, relatives and friends. Lois' book truly helped me to understand what I was going through and gave me suggestions for coping with my feelings and improving my experience.
Additionally, in a society in which women are supposed to feel exclusively excited and thrilled about pregnancy whether the birth goes as planned or is a nightmare- as long as the baby is okay- it is refreshing to read a book that proposes that we honor birth as a healing experience for the mother. Lois gives concrete suggestions and guidelines to help women have an emotionally fulfilling birth experience- I would suggest that health professionals utilize this section with all their pregnant clients.
Emotions about our past influence our birth experiences
Review Date: 2007-10-03
The author has provided expectant women with a window into their own thoughts as well as suggestions for how to help them enjoy their birth experience and weave it into their emotions as a positive experience. By allowing such a momentous occasion such as birth to awaken our inner thoughts, dreams and intense emotions about our past (and sometimes our relationships with our own mothers!), we are taken to a level where we can be renewed, in a sense. This book is straight-forward and uses examples to inspire. Many women go into late pregnancy with fear...this book helps them wade through that fear to the cause and helps them experience birth as an empowering (and sometimes forgiving) experience.
Lacked dignity and discretion for the public view
I am a mother of seven children. I have delivered all seven naturally, so I am writing from the standpoint of having been there. I purchased this book for my 18 year old daughter who has shown an interest in midwifery. It came today. I was disappointed at many of the pictures as I began to flip through the book. It is one thing to be in a real life situation; quite another to take a snap shot for the public to view. The pictures that were objectionable to me had nothing to demonstrate that was being written. They were absolutely unnecessary.
Childbirth is a wonderful miracle of our creator, and shows His glory. I think midwifery has a place especially as more and more young women are being propelled through an unnatural birth experience these days, but let's not lose our dignity or discretion. I am sending this book back.
This book is an absolute *MUST READ* for women (and men!) interested in becoming any type of midwife. This book is chalk full of the perfect information from beginning to end. It begins with general information on how to get started with educating yourself, from schooling and self-motivation, to a couple of very inspiring birth stories! There are request forms, and there are directories for school and programs galore. Your library is lacking without this *schoolbook*. I highly recommend this book! I couldn't have done without, and trust me, you really can't either! =)
This study guide was on our 'recommended' book list for our OB/Peds semester of nursing school to accompany the required textbook, so I bought it. Although it's very thorough, the overwhelming amount of information has made it minimally helpful in my studying. My class doesn't follow the book, and instead the instructors assign us pages to read based on the subject of the lecture... so for any given lecture, we may be reading parts of several chapters. Many of the exercises are fill in the blank sentences of key terms, matching definitions and open answer explanations. The one helpful feature I've found is the five or so N-CLEX style question at the end of each chapter.
Before buying this book, I would suggest reviewing your syllabus and seeing if your class goes into detail in each chapter, or if they skip around like mine. Still, it's relatively inexpensive and might be helpful to some.
Although I appreciate the workbook and its focus on reinforcing the information found in Varney's textbook, I feel the workbook is not helpful if you have the fourth edition of Varney's text. I tried to use the workbook as chapter guides to focus on what I was studying in the text and because the workbook is geared to the third edition text, I found all the page and chapter refernces were waaay off. So if I am studying Varney's fourth edition text on, say, breast exams, then the workbook with the same chapter is reviewing drugs used preconception that could harm the embryo. Very frustrating! I hope for a newer edition with each text revised so I can get a better workbook. Otherwise, it is a great idea to have a workbook companion like William's Obstetrics does.
In studying for the CNM certification exam, I found this book to be extremely confounding. And (in defense of the book) it does state that it is an aid to studying Varney's Midwifery textbook rather than a study prep book for the certification exam. The questions were not based on multiple sources for determining question answers like the purple "Women's Health Nurse Practitioner" Certification Study Guide. The only source for the answers in this book are Varney's Midwifery. So, it wasn't really my best source of study questions for the certification exam.
This was one of the first textbooks I used for midwifery school; right off there were several things I enjoyed about this book. The book isn't the size of an unabridged dictionary; it includes interesting clinical case studies that focus on midwifery care- not obstetrical care-; thorough review of physiology that was indepth yet not overwhelming. I found the chapters on the physiology of labor as well as embryology and placentation particularly useful.
The pages are fairly monochromatic, which I find a bit sore on the eyes. I like lots of color and constrast when reading textbooks- I think it helps retain the info better. The book is also written for British and European midwives, so just get used to the "oestrogen" and "labour" throughout the text.
I thoroughly enjoyed this informative and innovative book. If you are a student midwife or a current midwife this book is a must have. It covers all the aspects of the anatomy that we need to know to better inform our parents about embryology and how the pregnant body works and sustains itself during pregnancy.
The illustrations are incredibly helpful. If you are a visual person this book is definately for you. The book includes learning outcomes and chapter summaries. There are also many case studies which make you think about how you would respond to a stituation in real life. It also covers reproductive physiology, labor and postpartum.
EXCELLENT BOOK!!!
I found this text to be overpriced for a generally uninformative book. If you have had to take A&P at any point in time in your life you will recall more information than this text can provide. I did not find it useful and wish that I would have simply trusted my old A&P texts. An A&P coloring book or anything would have been more helpful. The text is however nice in the fact that it is directed to mid-level practitioners. Don't waist your money.
MAITLAND MATERNITY
A mystery baby, an expectant uncle and a pregnant teenager!
Dr. Abby Maitland was used to existing in a goldfish bowl, but life at her family's renounced maternity clinic had never been tinged by scandal... till now!
Kyle McDermott knew that raising his sister would be challenging, but he never figured he'd be challenging Marcie's decision not to marry her baby's father!
Abby had her hands full. Ethically, she had to support the administration of Maitland Maternity Hospital when rumors began to fly. Likewise, she had to resist Kyle McDermott's insistence that she push her young patient into a marriage she didn't want. Resisting Kyle himself, however, was entirely another matter!
I don't have a problem with the writing style or storyline, but I really did have to check the copyright (2000)to find out why a physician working at a maternity clinic and a wealthy entreprenuer don't use protection against HIV or pregnancy. I couldn't finish the book and will not read the series.
Strong characters yield a good start to a new series
Review Date: 2000-08-15
In this first installment of a new Maitland Maternity series, Dr. Abby Maitland finds herself juggling her life as a loving and supportive daughter with that of her high-pressured life as a gynecologist. When an unexpected baby is found on the doorstep of her family's maternity clinic, Abby and her prominent family find themselves the targets of the media's unflattering curiosity.
Her day continues on that note when expectant uncle, Kyle McDermott is compelled to draw her into his family crisis. As Marcie's respected gynecologist, Kyle attempts to persuade Abby to nudge his sister into marriage with her boyfriend, preferably before the baby's birth. Though Abby refuses to take sides, she is rather shocked when Kyle's attentions toward her persist. Both Kyle and Abby are surprised when their relationship deepens to friendship and progresses toward love.
Marie Ferrarella has written a solid story to spearhead this series. Both Kyle and Abby have strong personalities and the moderate speed of development suits the quiet tone of this book. The tone is periodically disrupted by the edgy quality of the overarching subplot concerning the mysterious baby and its equally mysterious mother. The author, however, does a fantastic job of establishing the strength and love of the Maitland family as well as the family's maternity clinic. There are a number of secondary characters, as well, whom Ferrarella sets up quite nicely for the books that follow.
The idea is good for the layout but that's the only positive I could find.
Page 4 Table 1-2 is incorrect. Neonatal death rate is the # of deaths occurring between birth and 28 days and Perinatal death rate is the sum of the fetal and neonate death rate.
Page 26, question 3: Which of the following breast structures is responsible for milk production. 1)Acini cells 2)Areola 3)Lactiferous ducts 4)Nipple . I chose #1 but the answer key says the correct answer is #4. Come on...
Question 12 on the same page involves more than one correct answer but the question never said to circle all the correct answers.
I didn't go any further in the book. 3 strikes your out.
Alright, I have read lots of books that were a part of a series and I knew that Prescription: Baby was part of the Maitland Maternity series. The problem is that in most series when you read a book they mention other characters to get you interested, so that you read the other books, but one book alone is a story in itself. However, with this book there was way to much going on. Several different stories were mentioned that I am positive can be found in other books in the series. For example, there was mention of an abandoned baby and the characters that are involved in that story and there was a mention of a murder and the characters that are associated with that. By mention, I mean that there are several pages dedicated to these other stories. In this book it was discussed as 'gossip' at the clinic. So, if you are not planning on reading any of the other books in this series than this is probably not the book for you. If, however, you are planning on reading the series than you will probably enjoy reading this tale of the love between Ford and Katie and the baby that brings them together. This is not the only focus of this book. There is also the story about these two characters families and questions that rise about paternity. Like I said before there is so much that goes on in this book. If you are looking for a straight forward one-dimensional story you will not find it here. This is more of a three dimensional or even eight dimensional book.
After one unforgettable night, Dr. Ford Carrington wants to resume his stalled relationship with Nurse Katie Topper. A byproduct of an affluent yet tragic upbringing, he knows it is too much to hope she could ever love him. He couldn't be more incorrect. Katie has loved Ford for a long while now but is convinced her affectioante and rowdy family would be an affront to the high class society Ford is a part of. But when she finds herself expecting his child, she is forced to admit that they must put the welfare of their child above everything else.
Though it is true that the author is trying to accomplish a lot in this story, notwithstanding developing a credible romance between the hero and heroine, Jule McBride's installment of this Maitland Maternity series is rich with irony and proves to be incredibly poignant. Both Ford and Katie are fundamentally nice and intelligent people who are genuinely committed to doing what is best for children in general to say nothing of their own. Though they harbor a great deal of affection for each other, Ford's disenchantment with his parents leads him to believe he could never truly make Katie happy though it is what he wants. Katie, in turn, would like to understand the rift and try to mend it. She succeeds in doing this in an unexpected way. I really enjoyed this story though at first it seemed to be more Ford's story than anything else. McBride throws in a huge surprise that turns the direction of the story neatly on its head. This is a well-rounded tale with strong, engaging, and sympathetic characters which you will enjoy.
