Excellent case-study text
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-16
I purchased this text after attending a Lactation Counselor training taught by Karin Cadwell and Cynthia Turner-Maffei. This book is filled with case-studies which reinforced the information that was taught at the training. This book is a must for anyone providing support and counseling for breastfeeding Moms and babies.

Good buy - VERY small book
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-03
When this book arrived in my mailbox, I almost passed out. This book is smaller than some Harlequin books... and it is not a cheap book. (I was expecting something about the size of the Biology of Women... which goes to show something about expectations.) At 196 pages... 6"x8"... it's a bit more concise than I nromally look for in a lactation text.

I must admit, that now that I have read the book, it was worth the purchase. It has good information that inspires one to go research more information (a GOOD sign, in my opinion!). There is valuable information presented in a very clear format. (Cases are resolved in level point form.)

I gave this book four stars because it is a solid book. I didn't give it five stars because it's a bit underwhelming. I think it could have been expanded more to create something exceptional. I probably wouldn't rank this book as a "must have" book, but I would classify this as a "good book to read" especially if you're preparing for the IBCLC exam.

Very mainstream but worthwhile

While I am not a "mainstream " childbirth educator, there are many aspects of this book that I have found myself referring back to during my teaching career. It was very helpful in learning about the adult learner and thier particular physical, emotional , sociocultural and cognitive needs. The chapter on the "the basis of relaxation" was very interesting as it helped me understand the history of using relaxation in childbirth and the different philosphies behind each technique. Biofeedback, therapeutic touch and acupressure were presented in an extremely informative manner. The basics of the childbirth education business arepresented( something that can be overlooked in most teachers passion for their "Cause"). A very mainstreamm textbook that can be of great value to both hospital and independent educators alike.

Should be required for anyone in a perinatal program
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-30
This is a book that covers just a little bit of everything in perinatal education. It has non-biased information, solid references, and an easy-to-read format.
This book cannot be read in one sitting because it is a typical (rather dry) academic textbook. But it is a book that you will refer to again and again.

Clinical Aromatherapy for Pregnancy and Childbirth

Review Date: 2003-10-12
This is definately a book for midwives or aromatherapists taking an active part in a clients pregnancy and labour. Denise is exceptional in her field and is certainly making a effort to bring down the boundries, incorporating aromatherapy into a field that is dominated by the current medical field. I certainly found this book informative, if some what heavy duty reading with all the clinical back up, but understand the necessity thereof. The only reason why I gave four instead of five stars to this book was that I had really hoped that there would have been more illustrations and techniques on the massage aspect of aromatherapy during pregnancy.

Finally!

Review Date: 2002-01-29
We finally find get the story of the real Conner O'Hara. Conner was the first born son of the Maitland Matriah Megan. He is not use to having a family or people to be so concerned about him.

When this book opens, Conner finds out that the little baby found on the Maitland Maternity Clinic steps is actually his baby boy. Born to him and Lacy Clark. Lacy used to work for Conner's adoptive parents. When Conner's mother (or the woman he thought was his mother) died, Lacy tried to console him and that is when the baby was conceived. Conner didn't want to be interested in Lacy and didn't want her to be interested in him. Conner was so much older than her, he felt she should have someone her own age. Lacy wasn't trying to hear it. She wanted Conner.

I think this is a good installment to the series. It was very emotional though. Megan trying to communicate with her son and vice versa.

Be sure to read the book before this one. Toddler's Tale another great one.

A strong relationship drama

Connor O'Hara had no idea he was a father until very recently, but he is feeling all the paternal instincts in one rush. Janelle Davis and her spouse Petey have kidnapped Connor's child Chase demanding $5 million for the safe return of the baby. During the exchange, Connor gives the money to Petey, grabs Chase, and dives into the safety of the nearby vacant sugarhouse. Gunfire is exchanged leaving Petey dead and an acrimonious Janelle in custody.

Though Chase is safe, Connor wants to be part of his life. He needs to persuade Chase's mother Lacy Clark that he wants to nurture and raise the child even as he wants her in his life too. However, everyone has much to contend with beyond the dangerous abduction as secrets have been revealed with more to follow and Janelle still proves quite a threat to the well being of those touched by the expanding Maitland brood.

The twelfth Maitland Maternity tale is a strong romantic suspense novel that starts in first gear and never slows down until the end. The story line is entertaining though readers might need a score card to keep track of all the revelations since the series began. Lacy and Connor are warm lead characters and the support cast adds the usual depth expected from this touching series. Marie Ferranella augments what is turning into one of the better long running romantic series authored by different writers in quite a few years.

It is an excellent concise introductory text for medical students. It's well-organized & well-illustrated, not to mention its up-to-date information. Unfortunately, it doesn't have self-assessment section. However, it's worth buying!

I think that this short, well illustrated book is an excellent introduction to Neonatology, and will also serve well as a review for those undertaking further training in the subject. I strongly reccomend the text for medical students, midwives, and for junior paediatric trainees, doing their first rotation in SCBU/ NICU. I think it covers the common conditions very well, and gives a good balance between detail on the important, common problems, and also giving some brief information on the rarer neonatal problems that one also has to have some knowledge of. I found the text well supported by graphs, diagrams, and pictures. I think the only features that it lacked were some brief, illustrative case histories, and a self assessment section at the back of each chapter. I have read (and enjoyed) the book a few times.

Great reference for NCC Maternal-Newborn certification
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-06
There were several recommended books to study for the NCC certification, but I found this one the most complete. It explained things more in-depth than most of the standard Maternal-Newborn books that I have read. The only caution I have is that the book was published in 1999, so some of our guidlines of care have changed in the last 5 years.

It will cover all the basics, clearly and organized

This book is very well organized and the only problem i found with it was there were not many pictures to help define some of the material. It covers each topic in good depth and in a clear concise manner and i enjoyed this books clarity alot more than other ones i have read.

this was a good book, but I really wanted to hear the storys about the women and their babies and it had a lot of her own personal life story in it. Alot of profanity too. Pretty good book overall.

The joy and sorrow of birth in the 1990's
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1996-05-26
Susan Stanley's Maternity Ward is certainly a labor of love for Ms. Stanley. She was able to become intimately familiar with many patients, doctors and interns throughout her study of the hospital (Pill Hill). My own experiences with births that were less than perfect led me to read her book, perhaps looking for a similar story, a common thread. This book hits home hard. There are no real pretty pictures in these stories. There are women who face many obstacles, be it poverty, genetic problems, obesity, drug problems, that all come to Pill Hill to have their babies. Some are there because this is their only option, others are there because they need to be. None really are there because they want to be. Not only is this an expose on the frantic emotional pace of a maternity ward, but a commentary of our social and economic status. Certainly those who are pregnant currently, I would suggest waiting until after you have delivered to read this book. It would only serve to stress and distress you. A great concentration on poverty and drug abuse is assessed in Maternity Ward. It is a gritty, true life look into a place we have all been (most of us, anyway!), either to deliver, be delivered or to watch a loved one deliver. The stories behind the women are honest, deep and moving. If you like a serious read, and have the stomach for bitter reality, pick this one up. You will not be disappointed

This is an excellent textbook for those studying to be midwives. It is well set out with easy to read information about all aspects of midwifery. Although written for English midwives the knowledge it shares is relevant to midwives from around the world (buyer studied midwifery in New Zealand). This is also much cheaper than buying from a university book store.

What a life saver!!

This book was a true life saver in nursing school when it came to writing care plans for OB. It was easy to follow and understand. The carefully described nursing diagnosis, defining characteristics and patinet outcomes were listed in a format that made charting easy. The nursing interventions and rationales were easy to comprehend, and as a student, I was able to understand exactly what to watch for. I am now a Labor and Delivery nurse and still use this book for a good reference. It is nice to have a book that can enhance your nursing style and awareness.
