I traveled to another country to teach nurses how to care for premature babies, and this was the first book to get packed into my suitcase!

This book is an excellent source of information when it comes to OB. I am very pleased with how the content is easy to understand. The pictures are a great source of information. This by far is the best book a student can purchase for nursing school in your OB rotation. This book went right along on how the teacher explained it to us. Thanks to OLDs for coming up with such a great OB book. Keep up the good work. Students need something that is easy to relate to and understand. This is the book you would want to purchase.
Thanks again,

I bought this book because It was required for my reading assignments and I needed it right away for getting information in order to do an assignment. I trusted the service and I chose the traditional speed even though it says that they will mail out the item within one to seven working days. They sent my item right the next working day and got my book before the week was over. I was really glad. About the information in the book, what can I say, this book is the main source where I get the information for my class assignments, so it is great because I don't have to buy other extra books. Overall it is a great book with a lot of important information.

Review Date: 2008-02-13
While this text is a core for many parent-child health nursing courses and does have some great information, it's greatest drawback is the index. Yes, the index. The index is poorly designed such that students often cannot find the particular subject matter they are searching for. Although this appears to be a minor concern, after wasted hours at failed attempts to locate many different items, this issue is both frustrating and a drain on nursing students' precious resource - time.

After choosing to have a VBAC, I found this book. Wow, what an inspiring and informative read! One of the authors has a uterine septum and breech babies, as I have. I had 4 c-sections due to it and after reading her story I grew confident that I COULD have a VBAC despite what the drs told me. I am now 30 weeks and for the first time have a HEAD DOWN BABY. I do attribute some of that to this book.
Yes, the book has a hospital focus. However, I did not feel that the book was slamming home births. Another book, Birth After Caesarean, does not recommend home births for VBACs. Some, like myself, have no other choice but a home birth (unfortunately.)

Has some nice stories, but this book is about anything BUT natural childbirth VBAC. HEAVILY medicalized, and not very encouraging in a womans ability to birth normally after cesarean. If you want a hospital birth with maximum drugs, this is for you. Otherwise, save your money and time and just read Birthing From Within!

Great for planning a hospital VBAC

Review Date: 2002-01-31
Natural Childbirth After Cesarean begins (as most books on the VBAC subject do) by refuting the old wive's tales...ruptured uterus, vaginal breech deliveries dangerous, etc. I am pleased with the fact that both writers are speaking from experience and not just medical or personal opinion (not all authors on this subject can say the same). On a more personal level, this book made me search out my own reasons for wanting a VBAC and emphasized that knowing this reason is crucial to the success of the birth. However, as someone considering home birth I thought that the book was a little too "pro-hospital" and mentioned a home birth only for those "extremists". This view was not backed up with any research but stemmed from personal opinion, which was a little disappointing. This aside, this book should be included in your "top ten" list as you do your VBAC research.

Helpful for any VBAC, not just natural

I loved this book. The authors' stories of their own VBACs are inspiring, and while they really promote natural childbirth, there is good information here that will help you even if you are not sure that is what you want. If you have a breech baby, be SURE to read this. One of the authors had 4 breech babies and she gives lots of suggestions for turning them!

Best book I've found for someone considering a VBAC.

I have just received the 3rd edition with a 2007 publishing date. On review of the references for the first 4 chapters, I have not found one newer than 1996. The reference for MAS is the AHA dated 1992. Meconium management has changed greatly in the last 15 years. In 1997, NICHD published guidelines for the standardization of EFM language. These have been adopted by ACOG and AWHONN. This language is not used. ACOG published a postition paper on fetal monitoring in 2005, also not mentioned. The tracings are wonderful, but the 3rd edition appears to not have been updated at all. Save your money- if you want the tracings, buy the older edition second hand.
Best I can tell all that has changed is a new publication date.

The top and medical experts in the field have written books on foetal assessment. This is the best-written, and is superbly successful in teaching how to monitor a foetus, what the monitor will show, and why--at several levels--these things happen. An excellent workbook and reference for bedside nurses and M.D.'s alike, this is the one book you need first and most.

Labor chapter reads like a HOSPITAL PAMPHLET!

Review Date: 2008-05-17
More complete and factual information that What to Expect, which is a joke.

While I realize that this book was published by The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and not Midwives Alliance of North America, it is pretty despicable to focus on a completely medicalized birth situation. It doesn't glorify doctor friendly methods of birth such as c-sections per se, but there seems to be no mention of how a birth with minimal medical intervention would actually work in the hospital. It repeatedly uses the phrase "if you choose pain relief..." and covers the following events. It never points to what happens or what methods can be used for one avoiding medical pain relief and other types of intervention.

If you go into labor and all you have read is this book, you will be familiar with the medical procedure facts and risks (i.e. an epidural can slow down labor, risks of general anesthesia, anesthesia procedures, etc.) but does NOT give any advice about making informed choices about the direction of the birth. It does not say how any of these interventions can be avoided. It barely indicates that you will be making ANY specific choices aside from accepting the vague notion of "pain relief". It's like you are totally on board for the whole slew of possible interventions or you are not.

I do not believe obstetricians are simply medical technicians. They should be familiar with the idea of a woman giving birth without numerous drugs and tools to regulate the mechanical and biochemical functions of her body like some kind of machine.

My favorite part of the book:

"Some fathers do not want to be in the delivery room during labor and birth. Even if your partner's not there for the big event he can still give you support in other ways. He can come with you to prenatal checkups and take you to the hospital when you are in labor, for instance"

Gee, that's super nice of Dad to cart you off to the hospital when you are about to give birth! That's even better than taking a taxi!

But seriously, pease look at The Whole Pregnancy Handbook by Dr. Joel Evans, an OB.

It is great because it gives you the same objective factual information about pregnancy and labor Planning your Pregnancy does, while also offering information for those who embrace alternative medicine. If you plan on having a scheduled c-section or an epidural, don't worry about this book making you feel guilty. It won't. The excellent and practical advice about dealing with the many symptoms of pregnancy that has helped me a lot. It is about integrating natural methods and choices into conventional medicine, not rejecting it wholesale. The books subtitle says it all and separates it from other natural birth-aware books: "An Obstetrician's Guide to Integrating Conventional and Alternative Medicine Before, During and After Pregnancy"

I got this book and "what to expect..." and the other one was so negative and discouraging that i almost always put it down and it literally drove me to tears a few times. =I found this book to be more useful. This book covers all the essentials and doesn't dwell on all the catastrophes that can strike. It is encouraging, very educational and covered just about every question or concern i had. I don't know why "what to expect" is such a hit but i'm so glad my doctor's office gave out this one instead.

By a friend's recommendation, I bought "what to expect when you are expecting". As she said, this is a "pregnancy bible". But I actually like this book -- "planning your pregnancy and birth" much better.

This book is clear, well-organized, and practical. I have a busy schedule. Also my reading speed is fairly slow since English is not my native language. So I appreciate the conciseness and yet still completeness of "planning ...". On the other hand, "What to expect ..." book has 130 more pages with smaller prints. It's also hard for me to find related topics in "what to expect" book, which according to my very personal opinion, has too much information and has too much useless talk.

This book is perfect for expecting moms. It is free of the ideology of the books by Sears and the "what to expect" crowd. Instead, it is a simple, "just the facts" look at pregnancy, birth, and newborn infancy. If you get only one pregnancy book, this is absolutely the one I recommend. It will put your mind at ease.

Great Resources for Nurses

This book is very concise and thorough enough for nurses. It is written in a bullet style format and is full of practical information for caring for newborns. It does discuss deviations from normal, but if you are looking for in-depth coverage of diseases and disorders of the newborn you will need another text. There are lots of pictures to help illustrate findings or assessments. There is also a brief discussion of the transition from fetal to neonatal physiology.

I'd recommend this to nurses in maternity care settings, or student nurses who need a more concise text on the newborn.

I haven't read the whole book yet, but my first impression was shock! The book starts out with a section of color plates of various conditions a newborn might have. They are quite graphic and I don't understand why, if it is the Assessment and Care of the WELL NEWBORN, they needed to start the book with those images- they could have been tucked away in the back....

An excellent summary of well-newborn care provided in outline form for efficient reading. The information is comprehensive, but concise. An excellent starting point for nurses new to the care of newborns. Includes information on how to identify the sick newborn without going into much detail, which makes this book a good preface to AWHONN's Core Curriculum for Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing.

I have arthirtis of the spine (ankylosing sponditis) and been told by doctors that there is no cure just PT. Dr Murray gives you an explanation of what went wrong, (while my disease is genetic why doesn't everyone with the gene get it?), nutritional vitamins and finally a diet to help and somewhat reverse the tide. Has it helped? In the two weeks I bought this book it has; my pain is less, much less, and while I am not totally faithful I am beginning to become a devout convert. If you have arthrits, ulcerative colitis (ra and uc are genetically related) or uncontrolled allergies, this man knows how to handle them. I've searched everywhere and he has the answer. Get this and the Balch Natural Remedies book and mate, you'll be right :-)

I am 40 and suffer from ankylosing sponditis (a form of rheumatoid arthritis) and before I found Dr Murray my back pain was intolerable to the degree I seriously wondered if I would ever have a pain free life again. Dark thoughts entered my head and I grew despondent. Then I found this book in a local bookstore and said, Why not, what do I have to lose? Well pain was the biggest thing :-). I read the book and have in the past 3 months followed somewhat faithfully. It is high on vitamins/minerals and that's where the cost comes in BUT when you figure what pain killers promise and what they deliver it's worth it. I am virtually pain free 75% of the time, sure I have relapses but I have hope and I believe I will be happy and painfree again much less deformed. I love this man and I love this book; what he has done for me goes beyond words. He is answer to a prayer and I thank him for that. He covers all types of arthritis from osteo to ra to as. He has alot of practical suggestions and most importantly it works.

This is a very good book of Obs and Gyn which provided a lot of information on simple way. Everything what is important is bolded on each lesson. It doesn't contain many pictures and schemes and this is the only disadvantage, but that is quiet enough for good understanding. It is suitable for medical students (everything important is signed) and for physicians who work or intend to work on Obs and Gyn Department (to have some concise book for him when they can find everything they want). I highly recommend this title.

I found this book extremely easy to use as a cross reference book and it largely aided me in my research. It covers the basics, such as general female anatomy, as well as more complex issues like AIDS in pregnancy. Important information appeared in bolder print and drew my eye, making it easy to skim over in a hurry. I highly recommend this book.

What an amazing book! Jerry Gentry studied the patients, nurses, and doctors that make up the Grady Hospital Maternity Ward in Atlanta. He follows several mothers on their journey through prenatal care, pregnancy, and the births of their children. He then follows up after the babies are born. I found this book compelling because it demonstrates every aspect of its subjects' lives. You feel like you personally know the people discussed. It is an emotional and monetarial journey of hardships for most of the mothers involved. Being an Atlanta native this novel has given me new respect for Grady hospital. A great ethnography for anyone interested in the subject and/or social behavior.

All Atlantans know Grady Hospital and will understand and appreciate these stories. All others will find Grady Baby fascinating.
