This book is a must have and the bible for anyone who wants to nurse their baby. Breast feeding is difficult at first and having this book on your shelf will truly walk you through some of the rough days. This book helped me with the transition back to work and on days in the beginning like when your boobs are so sore that you could scream! If you want to nurse your baby...buy this book!Mommy's High Heel Shoes

This book was easy to read and very informative. I was able to find a lot of answers to my questions as a first time nursing mother. It covers everything from pregnancy to weaning a toddler and it really helped me through every stage. I would recommend every nursing mother have a copy.

No matter what anyone says, breastfeeding is not always easy. There were times during the first couple weeks of breastfeeding that I thought that I would give up. This book saved me!! I only read the parts that I needed, and I felt encouraged. I would recommend this for any mother planning to nurse!!

Ina May's Guide to Childbirth is a much better natural birth advocacy book

Review Date: 2008-12-27
I agree with the reviewer that wrote that the language of the book distracts from its stories. All of the hippy language and ideas makes natural childbirth and home birth seem dated, flighty, and irresponsible. It's sad that a good message gets lost in the outdated language.

It's an interesting read, but I certainly wouldn't share it with anyone who wasn't already "converted to the cause." The Farm community's irresponsible and slap-dash approach to the first births makes this seem like a compelling argument that only hippies and idiots would give birth outside a hospital.

As a strong supporter of midwives and home births, this book is so far making me cringe. I guess it goes to show that babies for the most part can be born in negligent conditions, but it's a poor reflection of home birth, since the majority of women in this country that choose to give birth at home today do so with a qualified midwife with plenty of emergency equipment and a phone and hospital nearby if necessary.

Ina May's Guide to Childbirth is a MUCH better read for anyone looking for positive and responsible tales of natural childbirth.

Exactly what I was looking for!

I was hoping to find a variety of birth experiences represented and positive birth stories to accustom myself to the wide range of "normal", and found just that!
I think this is a great book to prepare for your own birth. It opens your eyes to the fact that labor does not follow a text book pattern and is different for each woman and each labor.
It doesn't matter your faith or how you define "Spiritual", there is something to be gained for everyone by reading these amazing birth stories!

Hi. I bought this book to give to a midwife in Guatemala who is a Christian Missionary of AMISH descent. If you read the product description, it almost sounds perfect! HOWEVER it is a "Buddhist" book...that is the spiritual part of it...Buddhism. In case any of you are like me, you might want that to be pointed out. :) That's all!

Loving Birth

Review Date: 2008-09-01
This book is an important book for all expecting mothers to read not only because it presents important practical information about natural childbirth options but also because it conveys a different feeling than most books do about pregnancy and birthing.

The women and their birth stories in this book do not fall into the average pop-culture, schedule-a-c-section type of group. In fact, these stories reflect on birth as a privilege for women. In Spiritual Midwifery, birth becomes a right of passage that enables a woman and her partner (and even other family members) to come face to face with some of their darkest challenges and lightest memories.

The language used in this book, such as "rushes" and "psychedelic", may turn off a good many of you who consider yourselves more polished than the hippy culture. However, it may also be a great way to stretch your posh imagination a little and gain the flexibility and open mindedness that is necessary to prepare for a wonderful birthing experience.

Being pregnant and giving birth can be more than just a life detour or a pain in the rear; it can be a powerful journey and a life lesson learned.

Great technical book

Review Date: 2009-01-07
This is a great book if you want the technical side of giving birth. I originally bought the book to give to a young mother to help her understand what to expect in regards to weight gain, nutrition, how she will know she is going into labor, etc. This book does not go into these things, however, it was a beautifully illustrated book for someone that is going into the medical field of birthing. So I did give it to my daughter and she found it fascinating.

A GREAT LEARNING TOOL FOR KIDS!

I purchased this book in 2003 for my, then 13, year old nephew. His mother raised him by telling him the formal (not slang) names for his body parts. It was a great book for him, as kids like picture books. He looked at it and read more and more of it as he got a bit older. He already knew much of the information inside of the book; however, there is a difference in hearing than there is in seeing.

I hesitated to buy this book because I heard some of the negative reviews, such as "the Nielson book is better" and "the images are fake, clay". However, I found it is more MUCH more informative and interesting than "A Child Is Born". It is modern, cleverly written, and really worthwhile as a coffe table book or baby shower gift. The format of the book is mostly photograph/art, with small paragraphs of information. My husband has been reading this book about what is happening to the baby every morning at breakfast, because it is written day by day, which is different than most pregnacy guides. It is free from advice, it is only factual.

Good for the first few months...

As a first time 'mom-to-be', this book was pretty interesting to look at, to see what's going on inside my body so early in my pregnancy. Ususally books on this subject focus on a more developed fetus, so book is good for me, for the time being. I do feel, however, that a different book will need to be purchased for the later months in the pregnancy, as the last trimester is barely discussed.

Great for the first 2 trimesters, though!

The most insightful book about the state of maternity care, backed up 100% with studies and references that are rock solid. I would recommend this book to anyone associated with maternity care, and that includes moms and moms to be!! Marsden Wagner is on a mission to open the eyes of those who assist women (and more often than not rob women and babies of the kind of birth experience they deserve) and women on the whole to the kind of sad state our maternity system is in. More importantly he talks about how we can fix it, and how each person has the power to do so if we just take charge of our own outcomes. If I had to pick one book to recommend to people to read about this subject, this book would be it, hands down!

Really enjoyed this book

This is the best book I have read on the US maternity care system. It should be read by all expecting parents, and everyone who cares about childbirth.

A real eye opener and must read!

I was well aware of much of the information in this book already, however, the way Marsden Wagner presents it and sites EVERYTHING with factual information, sources and statistic is just amazing! I had to actually stop reading it half way through because I was so upset. The stories that are retold here mimic many stories my own friends and family have endured, and it's enraging!

However, this book is such an important book to read as America is greatly regressing in birth. We are failing. We are failing women. We are failing babies and this book will tell you WHY.

One warning and that is that Marsden Wagner sort "rambles" in this book. It appears as if he's trying to make sure he's being extremely clear, and therefore spends a lot of time explaining what he's saying. At least, that's how I felt while reading it. Other than that, and amazing book and must buy!!

"Hiring a highly trained obstetrician to attend a normal birth is analogous to having a pediatric surgeon babysit a healthy toddler".

Should Be Standard Issue

I wish that moms could get this in their hands before they are of childbearing age. The more women understand why things happen in hospitals (meaning, the parts that have so little to do with their care and everything to do with protecting the interests of the care providers), all the better to make changes, to vote with their feet as they say, etc. This book is a wakeup call to hospitals, doctors and parents-to-be. The time has come to make some changes, but it won't happen until it is demanded.

Honest and funny. This book helped me laugh through the first few tough months of motherhood. Some of the anecdotes are so spot-on, I felt like Teitell was a witness to my own funny moments.

It is my favorite gift for new Moms.

I bought this book after hearing a radio interview with Beth Teitell. The time and money spent on looking, paying and shipping the book were a waste. The only stories that I could relate to werethe swimming lesson where she didn't know the nursery rhyme and improvised and singing the Brady Bunch theme song, because she couldn't remember any others. The rest of the book (and I admit I only got half-way through before I tossed it) was horrifying.
Getting mad at your children for turning OFF the television? Telling your in-laws not to let your children nap, so that you have quiet time when you get them back?
Hiding the fact that it's Halloween?
Seriously, what kind of a person does this? And her husband is a pediatrician.
If you are as selfish as the author, you shouldn't have children in the first place!

Please don't buy this for first time parents

Witty and funny, yes....but also just more trite trash about how inconvenient kids are and how to minimize any effect they might have on your life. I especially hate how she writes in a conspirational tone, like we're all doing these awful things and she's the one actually admitting to it, like denying your kids naps til its convenient for you, throwing them at sick grandparents or whomever so you can go shoe shopping, and feeding them fast food to shut them up. I'm not so sure she even likes her kids after reading this, and I don't recommend it for a new parent. Give a newbie something encouraging and positive, not this.

The BEST New Mother Book!

Review Date: 2005-08-05
For my money, From Here to Maternity really hits the right note. It is both funny and sweet. Teitell knows how to take any difficult parenting moment and relate it with Seinfeldian humor and yet maintains the warmth and love of a real mom who has been through it. This is an honest look at the earliest days of motherhood, told in such an accessible style that it is guaranteed to hook any mom, no matter what state of parenting she is in. Teitell conveys deliciously the insecurities we all feel parenting in upscale America but makes us feel like we are actually part of the hip set. From Here to Maternity is fun and a MUST READ for anyone who is in need of a good laugh -- which means every mom!

I laughed so much while I read this book on a recent trip that everyone around me kept asking the title. The author found the humor in the everyday stresses of life as a mom with young children. The reality is - raising kids is hard work and it becomes so much easier if we allow ourselves time to laugh about it, rather than stress about it. I recently sent my copy to a friend to read and we have spent a ton of time comparing our favorite parts. A must read!

My instructor suggested I get All-in-One because it will serve me through my rotations (Med-Surg, Peds, OB and Psych.) I love this book! It is so much better than the one we were required to buy. It is the only care plan book I've seen that gives measurable outcomes, which are so helpful in practice, not just in writing the plans. The rationales are detailed and easy to understand, and I quickly find what I am looking for. Highly recommended!

I love this book. My baby is still a bit too young to understand books so this one is for me. It reminds me of all the joy of her first day here, when they put her into my arms and I never knew something could feel that good. This book captures that day's experiences and feelings perfectly and serves to remind me, when I am tired and grumpy, the magic and joy that should be the overwhelming experience of having a child.

This is a charming, tender and very true-to-life book about what the first few minutes after giving birth are like -- really lovely. I would caution conservative families, though -- the illustrations are very realistic, this is not a "prettied-up" view of newborn babies. So if you'd rather that your children imagine newborns as looking like the Gerber baby, this may not be the book for you.

I have read every bed rest book I could find. This is not the best. The author has attempted to write a comprehensive book, and does a good job, just not great. There are better. It's very short, and after reading it, which took a couple of hours at most, I felt like I didn't have enough information. I wish the author would have had more experience with extended hospital bed rest. That would have been beneficial.

This is a *wonderful* book for any pregnant mother who is dealing with bed rest! The author is a veteran of two complicated pregnancies involving extended bed rest and she has put together an amazing amount of information and resources in this book. I wish I'd had this book for my first two pregnancies and am SO GLAD to have it for my third!

The author includes a huge amount of information and practical suggestions for coping with bed rest. She gives great suggestions on how to get the help a bed rest mom will need and where to find the resources that might be available to help these mothers and their families. She also discusses in great detail both hospital bed rest and bed rest in the home.

There is also a fantastic section on coping with bed rest when one already has other children [and how to help the children cope!], as well as a great section on fathers.

I would recommend this book to any mother facing bed rest in her pregnancy - whether this is her first pregnancy or her fifth! This book is just overflowing with great information and is very encouraging and helpful. It is also a very easy and enjoyable book to read. It is very well written and worth every cent!
