Great book for L&D nurses!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-23
Although this print is a little outdated (1989), it still contained information that is of value today in obstetrics. It was very informative, including FHT monitoring, induction, prenatal care, care of the teenager and older woman, drug addicted patients and concerns the nurse would have in caring for them. I didn't notice it was written in 1989 until I realized there were no citings of recent studies, just studies done in the 80s. Regardless, a lot of the content is synonymous with labor & delivery today. It is very easy reading, also.

I loved this book, it covers the essentials of obstetric ultrasound in a very practical way. It is also very well illustrated, and it's so little that you can carry it easily in your pocket. A must have for every beginner in the field.

Gain Without Pain
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-04
'Painless Childbirth Through Psychoprophylaxis' is a wonderful book. Written with clarity and common sense, the author's methods for achieving a painless childbirth are easy to follow. I was so impressed with the text that I gave a copy to Mel Gibson and his wife prior to the birth of their sixth child. I received this letter from the actor after mother and son were home safely and in robust health:

'Dear Schwarz,

Thank you so much for the book you sent Robyn and me. When we first read it, I must admit that we both felt a little sceptical. However, any doubts immediately vanished when the birth actually occurred. I was present all through the process and I can honestly state that I didn't feel a thing.

Thanks again, old friend.

Regards,

Mel.'

'Painless Childbirth Through Psychoprophylaxis' is an essential manual. Read it and share it.

Great Survival Guide!!!

I have used this pocket guide in clinical situations with students and have found it to be a great resource for pediatric facts. I have used it for teaching my students lab interpretation, finding and calculating appropriate medication dosages (yes, it even has I. V. fluid compatabilities), and for quick reviews of DDST and growth and development. So far, I have found everything in the guide that I needed to reference. Normally, I would need 2 to 3 books for this purpose. I am recommending it to my students to purchase as a supplement for their pediatric rotation next fall. I am very impressed with the ease of finding information and the wide range of topics covered.

terrific resource for the midwifery student
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.

This book is incredible! It is a detailed anatomy and physiology text, but applied to childbearing. So it covers the major body systems, but talks about how childbearing affects them also. Then it goes into the physiology of birth and its complications- just incredible. I recommend this to every midwifery student out there, and midwives as well!

A Pleasing Birth: Midwives and Maternity Care in the Netherlands
Published in Paperback by Temple University Press (2005-01-30)

Useful for caregivers and moms-to-be
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-06
Those who don't know about the way the Dutch do birth might think this is an esoteric topic, but De Vries makes clear why midwives, obstetricians, family doctors and moms-to-be need to pay attention to maternity care in the Netherlands. It is no accident of history that one-third of births in Holland occur at home, most under the watchful eye of a midwife. His explanation of the Dutch way of birth points the way toward reforming the over-medicalized care given to moms in other western Nations -- reforms that would make birth more pleasing and less expensive.

De Vries is not your typical social scientist. He writes in an engaging way, telling the very interesting story of the people who have helped to maintain this humane approach to birth.

A great book!
