Dr. Chase was a traveling physician who compiled this book of "recipes and information for everybody" including a wide array of information and home remedies for families. At the time it was published, individual receipes to cure a sick horse or sick child were quite expensive. Dr. Chase's book of 800 recipes for health remedies, drinks, livestock cures, etc. was a bargain and a mainstay in households across the continent.

Sections include:
Merchant and Grocer Department
Saloon Department
Medical Department
Tanner,Shoe, & Harness Maker Department
Painter Department
Blacksmith Department
Tinner Department
Gunsmith Department
Jeweler Department
Farrier Department
Cabinet-maker Department
Barber Department
Baker/Cooking Department
Domestic Department
Miscellaneous Department

The information included is wildly varied and fascinating! Dr. Chase even advocates humane treatment of animals (includes illustrations for saving injured horses), instructs young people in how they can be successful, etc. etc. etc.

Just a wonderful book of frontier/19th century wisdom! I have the 38th edition, which was published in 1866.

Once again Ken Ohm has taken us back to simpler times. This book is one to just sit back and enjoy on a cold winter evening. It makes you want to make popcorn balls and try snow ice cream. It shows the importance of family. I highly recommend this book.

Just a reading of "My First Vision" should encourage any believer in Christ, with a foretaste of the wondrous things that await the faithful of God. Some of the earliest evidence of this woman's gift of prophecy. For those willing to follow the road that is "strait" this book can truly be called life changing.

This is the essential resource for anyone interested in all aspects of upland shooting. Norris is probably best known as an old school gentleman wingshooter; this book shows how upland shooting is done right. It is interesting to note how Norris's method of wingshooting as practiced in the countryside around Philadelphia stands in stark contrast to the market duck hunting that was practiced just to the south on the Chesapeake. This book will also interest dog lovers (it contains descriptions of various breeds and general dog-care instruction). Norris was a doctor by training and this is apparent in his method of writing. He conveys clear accurate technical information. But behind all the technical information is an implicit lesson, that of fair chase. In the modern era, very few hunters can articulate this concept; and it is all but lost on the general public.

Great Introduction to Economics
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-16
Henry Hazlet's "Economics in One Lesson", makes a powerful and persuasive argument in favor of a free market economy. Written in a very lucid style "Economics in One Lesson" makes the usually dry subject of economics easily understandable and a pleasure to read. Hazlitt doesn't obfuscate the truth with cumbersome graphs and math. For non-economists like my self it makes a great introductory book to the subject. Even though the book was published in 1946, the topics covered by Hazlitt are still pertinent and examine issues that still confound us more than 50 years later. Chapters include inflation, tariffs, taxation, price fixing, labor unions, savings, and the importance of profits, rent control, and more.
As a retired Army officer and student of political philosophy, I found "Economics in One Lesson" a great book for anyone who wants to understand basic economic theory.

First of all, the specifications on Amazon are wrong. The size of this is 4.25 " X 2.75" It is shirt pocket size. The price is great for the excellent and highly accurate new translation. Order a few at this price and stick one in your car, one in your desk, and carry on ein your pocket. No Christian should be without a New Testament.

Anybody with an interest in free speech issues will find this account of the "Hatrack Case" fascinating and entertaining. The book recounts an attempt by the federal government to censor a 1926 issue of Mencken's magazine, The American Mercury, because of an ostensibly pornographic short story that appeared in it. Mencken, of course, is a great writer, and this only adds to the appeal of this book. Mencken regarded free speech as our most important liberty, and this book reveals that he was willing to risk a jail sentence to combat censorship.

Read and Learn

Review Date: 2007-06-22
I read this book twice, and I'm amazed at what I've learned each time. Lamour not only explains what he learned, but how his wanderings almost "forced" him to learn. It reads like a travelog, a biography, an adventure, and a history--always a history.

You'll probably learn a little about yourself also, as you react to some of the things about which Lamour opines. Perhaps the most valuable things Lamour does is point you toward other volumes that will further increase your education.
