I have been using a Chambers Twentieth Century dictionary since the 1970s and I have not yet found a more comprehensive dictionary to meet my needs. I have seldom ever come across a word that I fail to find in this excellent book that is my companion whenever I meet some unfamiliar English word.

The 1972 edition of the dictionary has kept pace with the rapid changes and diverse influences on the English language. The book also takes into account the reducing barriers in English usage in various parts of the world such as the USA. Such a catholic and broadminded dictionary makes it useable by people from all over the world.

The other useful features of the dictionary include the detailed etymologies, the pronunciation guide, idiomatic turns of speech and the literary words from around 300 to 400 years ago. It also has quotations from Latin, Greek and other modern languages; musical terms, signs and symbols; the Greek and Russian alphabets; Roman numerals; conversion tables and mathematical symbols, among other useful features.

The comprehensive nature of dictionary makes it weighty and this makes it not very portable especially if you are travelling. The authors also need to come up with a new edition to take into account the diverse changes that have taken place about three and half decades since this edition. However, for me, the dictionary continues to serve a very important purpose.

99.9 times out of 100 you cannot go wrong with Spurgeon. This is one of those wonderful cases. A wonderful gift to that Christian that desires to seek God daily in a devotional. Or just a great book for you to get into His presence with.

I bought it at a conference, and enjoyed it tremendously. I let a friend borrow it, and he thought it was a gift. He called me to thank me, and told me how much it blessed him. How could I tell him I wanted it back! I bought another copy for myself, and have enjoyed it again ever since.

I have 6 sons and my kids love this Bible. Our 9 year old has claimed it and is excited to have his first "real" Bible. I love the features for the kids, daily tidbits for them to glean even more information from the word. It also has some great in-depth studies on a few subjects that are vital for children as well as a dictionary at the back that my son loves having so accessible to him! He even loves the cover!

This is a great tool both as a parent, and for your child!

I've known about this translation for years, but until recently I had never used it. It is a 'thought for thought' translation using a fresh, accessible English that is easy to read and understand; it makes many passages finally clear. The ongoing commentary is amazing! It is certainly
done from a Roman Catholic perspective, but surprisingly open minded. The notes and introduction are very informative. I lead a lectionary study at church, using the NRSV. I have used the REB for personal reading and prayer, but this translation has replaced the REB for personal prayer, and has become the powerful back up to the NRSV when I lead our studies.

Not surprising that this manual would be excellent. Guthrie Veech is one of the great minds in Christianity today, and this manual is a perfect resource for any minister looking for answers in the "tough" situations.

Great edition, I own the last one and this is a major upgrade. This man is 100% Genious. Buy it.

Dickens' Christmas Books might be some of his most overlooked works, except for, of course, "A Christmas Carol." But in these stories he has captured the season's spirits of reflection and faith better than any other work I've read. "A Christmas Carol" is an acknowledged masterpiece; "The Chimes" and "The Battle of Life" are particularly moving as well. Four of these five stories bring me to tears by their ends.

I started in 1991 to read one story per year in the published sequence, (for Christmas 2000, I'm reading The Haunted Man again) and this has made December and its holidays more enjoyable and meaningful for me. I hope to continue the cycle and look forward to reading "this year's Christmas story" aloud to my family as my kids grow up.

Oxford Press/World's Classics publishes excellent quality paperbacks, and they do justice here to Dickens' powerful works. I highly recommend this work (and especially this publisher) to anyone; if you're looking for "A Christmas Carol", get this volume of all the Christmas Stories and enjoy even more of Dickens' masterful ability to weave the human condition into such moving short stories.

Well, this one is one of the best sources for Knowlegde. Nicely designed, very helpful pictures, with Rashi commentaries, and of others. I have noticed several differences in commentaries between '94 and '01 editions. They are basically the same, but one has broader explanations, the other has more recent translations. This KJV reference Bible is a complete source of information. I will definately recommend it to anyone who needs a study bible. It's well done, and a beautiful bible.

My passion for boat building started by amassing a formidable library on the topic. John Leather's book stands out. The book is beautifully written by a craftsman of traditional boatbuilding who is also a naval architect. It is comprehensive in scope and treats important subtleties for the novice including careful descriptions of clench nailing, fairing, and the making of useful jigs and specialty tools. The book reads so well that it is as at-home on the bedside table as it is on the shop bench. It should be bought first to whet one's appetite for the craft and then to serve as a reference for the new builder.
