Early American Brewing Text
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-31
In 1815, New York City brewer Joseph Coppinger wrote The American Practical Brewer and Tanner, one of the earliest brewing texts published in America. Coppinger had emigrated from England many years earlier, arriving in New York at a time when commercial beermaking in the young nation was growing, but far from mature. Coppinger saw the potential for a brewing industry in America that would one day rival that of Europe. At every opportunity, he promoted the health and economic benefits of beer, even making a personal appeal to President Madison, and later Thomas Jefferson, for the establishment of a National Brewery in Washington to help spur brewing nationwide.

To make this early brewing text available to modern historians and brewers, [...]

The American Practical Brewer and Tanner is the culmination of Coppinger's twenty-five years of experience as a brewer and maltster. He shares his wisdom on the proper location of a brewery, its architectural arrangements, and every practice and process performed within its walls. All aspects of the brewer's art, including the cultivation of hops and barley, are discussed in great detail, and in the colorful parlance of Coppinger's day. The result is an entertaining and educational glimpse into beermaking in early America.

Though Coppinger saw fit to include a small chapter on the tanning of hides, only the final 12 pages are devoted to that topic.

This is a very good book. Very very very good. That's a triple very. Very good.
In this tale, "The Annals of a Quiet Neighborhood", George Macdonald recounts in very fine detail his first experience as Parson. After reading the book I almost wondered why it was titled "Quiet Neighborhood". Sounds boring doesn't it? Well, it's not. You'll discover some of the most remarkable and extraordinary people in the pages of this book, all with a story of their own. This is one of those books that offers the reader, however, more than a merely interesting story; though it is that as well. Some of George MacDonalds most core beliefs are revealed through the voices and actions of his characters, including the Parson himself (George Macdonald, or Mr. Walton in the book). How much of the book is fiction, and how much of it actually happened, I do not know and it doesn't really say. Nor do I think it matters a great deal.
What I really love about MacDonald's fiction in general and this book in particular is how he manages to take the theology in his "Unspoken Sermons" (A great book too, in its own right), and translate it into every day situations. While "Unspoken Sermons" deals largely with the theory, Macdonald's fiction stories show practically how these truths can be lived and seen in every day life. Even so is this book. If you like anything else of Macdonald's you'll like this too. If you haven't ever read any Macdonald, well, your missing out. It's easy to see why this man had such a big influence on some of the leading thinkers of the 19th century such as C.S. Lewis and G.K. Chesterton.

Raleigh, this book is wonderful. I am reading it now as I have just received my copy. I know I may enjoy it because I now know you and have worked with you (designing the cover), but it really is a fascinating read.
For others who read this, the book brings you right into history and places like no other book I know. It makes you think of the here and now and the forever more!

Excellent perspective to link current knowledge of the "when and where" to the biblical word. It helps to understand the context. Relative to this particular product, the binding is beautiful and feels great to the hand. Definitely a cover worthy to embrace the contents.Archaeological Study Bible: An Illustrated Walk Through Biblical History and Culture

Before the invention of the present compound bow, before the invention of the fiberglass recurve of the 1960's, was the wooden bow. This is an outstanding book for the the true traditional archery lover. Not a how-to book but collection of essays and real studies about the performance of the weapon. It is an attempt to find the best design and materials from before the war. Hickman and his fellow archers took a scientific approach to the study of the wooden bow and arrows. This book is a collection of studies on the subject of arrows in flight, studied in wind tunnels for the first time, wooden bows, and wood species. They compared designs and its effect on performance and came up with the "perfect longbow". The author and his colleagues were the leading scientist in the Manhattan Project and applied what they discovered about arrow flight to the A- bomb casing. In this case they fused the alpha (arrows) to the omega (A-bomb) of weaponry. I have built many of the bows in the book and found them to out perform modern bows. The copy I read was signed by the author who gave the book to our mutual physician and fellow long-bow lover.

quite astonishing

Quite astonishing, wrote one critic, and this, often very dreamy, book of 1915!!! is exactly this. I am not a movie critic, just a reader and this book was a delight to read. It deals about the era of the silent movies, around 1915 when there were no Rambos or Terminators running across the screen with Qsound and computerised warping effects. It was the time when everything had to be expressed in gestures, like a moving picture book, because of the lack of sound.
The author therefore comes with a lot of interesting theories and opinions of how a story could and should be elegantly communicated in a moving picture. He even comes up with a theory of why California is as crazy as Hollywood seems to most of us now.
This work has to be a classic of movie pictures, just like The Art of War for the military, or Keynes for economics, and for people that are, like me, just interested readers of all kind of subjects, also highly recommended.
