Excellent Reference for Floodplain Modeling Using HEC-RAS

This text provides a wonderful reference for HEC-RAS modeling at your finger tips. Topics and subtle details of the modeling process are covered and are an essential and complementary resource to the HEC-RAS manual, technical resource, and applications guides that are provided with the HEC software package. If you are looking for a solidly professional resource specific to the HEC-RAS program, look no further. One critical note about the text... The authors refer to the reader an an engineer. However, there are many scientists that are qualified to and do perform floodplain analyses using HEC-RAS. These scientists are known as Hydrologists. It is not known if this is an innocent oversight or is intended to snub the community of hydrologists. Despite the myopia, it is a worthwhile text to have at your disposal.

Haestad has produced the most useful how-to book I have come across so far for any model. Most manuals assume too much for the beginner or don't go far enough to be any use to the expert. Haestad has produced an excellent book for both

Beginners will find excellent "lead you by the hand" explanations. Experts will find excellent tips on querky modeling situations such as culverts that have changes in size or flow internally.

This book really makes the whole process of flood modeling more understandable to everyone.

This book is great! If you dropped it on your toes you would break them, however as a biologist it has made floodplain hydrology far more acessible. In these days of personel rationisation, being able to do anything and talk to everyone is a definate plus. I find Haestad's books very worth while.

I am a civil engineer, working on a variety of water/wastewater related projects. One of the most complicated projects/problems is related to understanding, defining and solving problems related to hydraulics and hydrology of rivers. Here is a book that can really help you understand basics of flow hydraulics. An easy read, simplified problems, and step by step guidance make it MUST HAVE for an enginner. In conjuction with HAC-RAS software this book is a great tool for wrestling with any problem that can be thrown at you. I personally use a lot and am more than pleased with it.

This study bible is really an eye opener for a deeper understanding of so much. The commentary notes are so helpful, you could teach a sermon just from them. Who ever buys this will be so blessed. This bible also has studies in the back that you can also use. Auto biography's on so many patriarchs, disciples etc. I would highly recommend this bible to new believers on up.

Just what I'd hoped for.

It delivers on what I'd needed. Thoroughly understandable written English, but seems to still retain all of the "Holiness" of the KJV, and even annotates where liberties with words have been taken, referring back to originals in footnotes. Application notes are copious, for deeper understanding, and cross-referencing is amazing. A huge "index" or concordance, lots of maps and special features throughout, like a chart of miracles Jesus performed, all the prophecies He fulfilled, chapter intros, a harmony of the gospels (numbers events through all four in chronological order in Jesus' life.) The same harmony device is used for events in Kings and Chronicles. Plenty of timelines too. I prefer this to the NIV, for sheer understandability, especially for beginners. I speak 3 languages, but I prefer not to have to puzzle out meanings in basic sentence structure, etc. If you want an exceptionally deep further study of the verse-by verse, I'd suggest Matthew Henry's Commentary, but this Bible seems more than sufficient for most general purposes. I gives great spiritual, bilical, geographical, cultural, and chronological context, and the snazzy leather cover is an aesthetic treat, and allows the Book to lie open nicely.

The NIV Life Application Study Bible is great BUT this is not the 'best' one ... The 'best' one is the exact same on the inside but it has a genuine leather cover (rather than bonded leather) AND indexed thumb tabs to make finding the books of the Bible easier. The 'best' one is available here on Amazon for just a few dollars more -- it, and my full review, is at: NIV Life ApplicationĀ® Study Bible (New International Version).

This is a great one volume bible commentary but don't be fooled into thinking this is a study bible. There is just too much info in it to be anything but another single volume commentary. At times, especially in the new testament, the commentary takes up 90% of the page with a few lines of scripture at the top. The best thing about this bible in my opinion are the various lists, charts, and diagrams. They really help me understand.

the definition of intrepid

Review Date: 2007-07-04

Tim Severin and his intrepid crew recreate Brendan and his fellow monks' voyage in the 6th century from Ireland to North America in a small ox-hide boat (curragh). The natural materials and traditional techniques that Brendan used are authentically utilized to make the Brendan voyage a successful historical re-creation and a thrilling sea adventure.

Tim Severin is a born storyteller. As far as a historical re-creation event, this voyage has some parallels to the Kon-Tiki expedition. The reason for making the Brendan voyage was to answer the question: Did Irish monks sail across the Atlantic centuries before the Vikings?

This book relates an amazing seafaring adventure. There is one scene where the sea is calm when a pod of orcas spot the Brendan (boat's name). The orca alpha bull comes full tilt at the boat, dorsal fin eight feet above the water line. The crew holds their breath as the bull whale swims under the boat, checking out this strange thing. After an eternal minute of silence, they watch the bull surface and swim back to the pod. High drama indeed.

Tim Severin and his crew are the very definition of intrepid. Severin's level of enthusiasm is amazing; it is never diminished by the cold, wet, and treacherous sailing conditions. His composure as the captain of this little boat is compelling and inspirational.

I would also suggest getting a copy of the hardbound edition, which unfortunately is out of print. The photos of this voyage tell every bit as much of this story as does the text.

Highly recommended.

More than Boats

I almost put the book down while reading the first half, but stuck with it, and was rewarded in the second half. I wasn't interested in hearing about the cultures of the places where the boat crew came ashore. Actually, I wasn't interested in reading about anything but the "voyage" proper. And, in this book, you'll get info about the history of some of the places they landed and other "side info". As a result, I found the first half of the book slow and boring.

Nonetheless, once they began the largest leg of the journey, and couldn't land anywhwere, the book picked up pace and held my interest. It turned out to be quite a voyage and a heck of a feat. In the end, I'm glad I read it. But, with that said, I'd have been disappointed had I paid full price for the book.

An exciting true nautical tale of courage, adventure, and accomplishment

The Brendan Voyage is the true-life story of what has been called the greatest epic voyage in modern Irish history. Author Tim Severin and his friends built a boat using only techniques and materials available in the sixth-century A.D., when St. Brendan allegedly sailed to America. The vessel consisted of forty-nine ox hides stitched together and stretched over a wooden frame, yet it was a seaworthy creation capable of withstanding storms and a puncture from pack ice during its voyage from Brandon Creek in Dingle to Newfoundland. Now in a new edition, The Brendan Voyage has been translated into twenty-seven languages, and proves that St. Brendan could have indeed reached America - though whether he actually did is a conundrum left to historians. Written with narrative skill, and illustrated with a handful of black-and-white photographs The Brendan an exciting true nautical tale of courage, adventure, and accomplishment.

This is a book that unfortunately can be read very quickly.
The author sets out to prove that the journal of St.Brenden is not
as always susposed, alogorical, but a very real tale. With painstaking authenticity he seeks out old timers on the west coast of Ireland who still know how to make boats from bull hide, and sets them the task of building to spec the boat of St.Brenden.The rest is as you might imagine; a voyage to America in a 6th century leather boat.Magnificient story of courage and man against the sea.

A Great Adventure Story

Tim Severin has organised several voyages in part to prove that ancient peoples could travel far greater distances than previously thought. In this story he builds a traditional leather boat or 'curragh' to show that monks could have sailed from Ireland to Newfoundland around the seventh century. There is an ancient book called the 'Navagatio' (one old copy is in the British Library) which St Brendan wrote about his voyages around the Atlantic Ocean. It is thought from Brendan's descriptions that he island-hopped via the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland to get to America, and Severin follows this route in a dangerous and interesting adventure taking many weeks. There is much detail on how he built the boat using only traditional methods and materials which was no mean feat in itself despite their still being used in the south-west of Ireland for fishing. The book contains colour photos of the boat's construction and of the diverse and colourful crew who sailed her. The book reminded me of the 'Kon-Tiki' book by Thor Hayerdahl. Also, the pictures are brilliant - and Tim's descriptions of the ports of call such as Iceland and the Faroes are very vivid and realistic. It's a well-written, interesting book and well worth a read.

I was reminded of this book while reading another and remembered that I once had a copy. I dug it out and realized that it had been in my library for about 50 years and I had never spent any time with it! I began using it and bought copies for friends for Christmas. I say "using" it because it's not a book to be read. It is a book to be prayed.

A Classic with tremendous power for today

I had read snippits from "A Diary of Private Prayer" by John Baillie for several years and finally decided to get this little book which was first published in 1937. I was amazed at his deep prayer disciplines for morning and evening prayers for each day of the month. They are written with such depth and honesty that I was drawn into them.
It is also good to note that this work comes alongside that of C. S. Lewis and Dietrich Bonhoeffer as they confronted the darkness of WWII and Adolph Hitler.
The reader may want to track down an out of print book written in 1955 titled "A Diary of Readings". This diary shows clearly that the depths of "A Diary of Private Prayer" equipped Baillie to gather 365 gems of faith and wisdom from across the ages.

These are some of the most beautiful, humble, and practical prayers I've ever seen. The author tells you up front that they are not to be used in place of your own prayers, but instead are meant to inspire. He prays about things that few today even consider. The book is written in the elegant style of old english, but is not as difficult as King James english. If you want to revolutionize your praying, get this book. You get a morning and evening prayer for 31 days, plus two bonus prayers for Sunday. Also, be sure to get a copy of John Baillie's companion volume "A Diary of Readings."

Little book of prayer was new and inexpensive although paperback.

President Ford has not been the most prolific writer as far as Ex-Presidents go. This unique insight into one of the most important events in the last 50 years is an American treasure. Ford has forever been reluctant to discuss this topic, and used this unique forum to give what will likely be his "final" views on the topic. A must read for those interested in history. If you are a book collector you will be extremely impressed with the quality of this volume. The quality and workmanship should redefine what we come to expect in a leatherbound book.

First off, I am of an "age" where this Kennedy controversy was nothing but something folk argued about over the years. I was an infant when the assassination took place, so I have no emotional involvement in either side of the story. That having been said, let me say about this book:

From the "outside", this volume "oozes" quality, elegance and opulence.

On the inside, the "old" story of the Warren Commission, which I admittedly never really believed, is told again with additions that augment the original report. I have seen other documentaries, and one or two I saw "proved" to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that these folk from the 1960s knew what they were talking about.

To have such an elegant edition of a book, signed by the only surviving member of the Warren Commission, is a must-have for any collector, whether you "believe" what it says or not.

A wonderful book full of new thoughts on the assasination of JFK and even hand-signed by President Gerald Ford. A beautiful piece of art that has a living soul that you can not find in a book any more. This book is worth every penny that is spent and will only go up in value from here. I am glad I have been lucky enough to have come across this book before the big bang happens and prices skyrocket. I recommend this book for any collector. A truly great piece of American history!!!

I straddle the fence on whether I believe the lone gunman theory that was the conclusion of the Warren Commission, but there's no equivocation about my admiration for this beautiful leatherbound, gilt-edged edition which includes a new Foreword by President Gerald Ford. Also, while I disagree with Ford's pardoning of Nixon, there's no denying the historical importance of the work he did on the Warren Commission, and it's safe to assume that his new material in this edition will represent his final public thoughts on the JFK assassination.

A MUCH NEEDED CHRISTMAS PRESENT FROM JESUS

Review Date: 2008-12-26
I bought this for myself about 14 years ago. Without going into too much detail, our family lost a young beloved member due to the carelessness of a drunk driver. I've always been a Catholic. And like most Catholics, cradle, with no clue of it's history. I wasn't quite ready to reinstate my relationship with God as I was so angry with Him, I read books on, but never practiced witchcraft and the occult. Then I watched my 3 seasons of the Kung Fu tv series to achieve a sense of peacefulness from the Tao like teachings. After going through all the episodes I realized God was not at fault and I was ready to seek Him out more fervently then I ever had before. I started attending Mass again regularly, visiting all the apologetic sites I could find, and pulling my 1958 family size Douay Challoner Holy Bible off the shelf. For those who don't know, an apologetic is not someone that apologizes. An apologetic is one that defends true christian faith and doctrines. For weeks I tried to find this prayer book I haven't seen for close to a year and of course with no success, but last night late Christmas eve I prayed, "Please let me find my prayer book. I really need it". Within 15 minutes I found the book. This is why I consider this a Christmas gift. Personally given to me by Jesus Himself. This remarkable pocket sized 255 page book packs a big punch. Prayers start on page 9. 246 pages of the most selfless devotional prayers with 16 color pages of artwork, in a soft vinyl type brown cover. The font is quite large as most people have said. However the font size does vary according to it's need for fitting on to the page, but it never gets too small. The first intent for most readers is to read it from cover to cover. That's fine. But when you're done go back and read the prayers, reflect and meditate on them. Read the ones approapriate for the need. This book is more than just a prayer book. It's truly the bridge between the reader and the entire Heavenly family.

This book was writen by REV. Maurus fitzgerald, O.F.M inspired by God of course. This book gets me to talking more to Jesus then I use to. The more I pray and use this book it puts me into the prayer mood and keeps me talken to Jesus! I world give this book to a friend or family; it will teach them how to pray and will open their hearts it will fill them up with so much love! When you ask God into your life and you don't pray or talk to Him something just happens you lose that closeness with God. If you are like me you just don't know what to say. Well, with this book it will open up your mind and heart to Jesus! It will help you understand the Catholic Faith and how pure they are when it cames to their hearts and in their faith! I read this book through to the end and started over again and I still feel blessed everytime it read this prayer book.

This is a very comprehensive and easy-to-understand prayer book that every Catholic should own.

Somehow someone overnight exchanged my good old eyes that could read the small print on the back of my credit card bill with someone's tired out used and weary eyes that don't work that well. Either that or someone swappped out my arms for shorter ones that cannot hold text far enough away to come into view.

So people like me are very grateful for visible fonts, as in this prayer book.

The Rev. Maurus of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) has been publishing prayer books for some twenty five years. This is a reprint of an edition from twenty years ago. If it is important to you to include the new Luminous Mysteries in your Rosary celebrations, please be certain to get this, the latest edition.

You will find here the regular prayers of the Faithful, including morning, afternoon and evening prayers, as well as such sacramental celebrations as the Stations of the Cross and the Eucharistic Adoration.

The Celebration of the Sacraments includes preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and of course the Mass, with Communion prayers. There are prayers for before and after Mass, and for a variety of Masses, including the Ordinary of the Mass. In the old days this might partially be called a Missal and more; although it cannot replace a Missal with the cycle of readings, it can certainly serve as supplement.

Prayers of the Saints are included. You can also find here Acts of Faith, Hope, and Charity, as well as prayers for sickness, and in death. The commentary on the prayers is also a helpful companion. A section on Our Faith may also be found useful, if necessarily incomplete (study the theologians for more on this, including Jesus: An Experiment in Christology, Praying With Jesus And Mary: Our Father, Hail Mary and Mary: Model of Justice (Reflections on the Magnificat)!).

The NLT is a good Bible translation for this age group, but the pictures, text boxes and activity pages distract from the Scripture. It's not bad for a beginner, if there's some question about wanting to read the Bible, but for someone who actually does want to read it, the other stuff gets in the way. Even our 10-year-old now prefers to use other Bibles, as he has trouble looking up references because of the distractions.

A sturdy NLT without all of the extraneous material would be a better choice, and would probably wear better, as it would be lighter and thinner.

2 people I know have this bible and carry it everywhere they go. I gave it to a girl recovering from addiction. The memos and commentary on the side of the Bible passages are excellent. A lot of "food for thought".
If you are in recovery or have a friend who is, it is a great gift.
I also enjoy reading it, it is very easy to comprehend and very helpful divine inspiration.

A recovery bible in the NLT translation is the perfect match. Over 80 translators were involved in translating from the original languages. It is very accurate. PLUS, very easy to read. You don't need to have a PHD to understand what God wants us to know. And, it's so nice to have the 12-step influences throughout the book. An extra bonus for those struggling with addictions. Is there anyone that's not? The hardcover version is so nice...made to last for many years. I've heard that prison chaplains can't get enough of these. They are so in demand...and for good reason.

An accurate history of Baptist martyrs

This should be in the homes of every Baptist family, as it already is in most Amish families. As the book itself explains, it is a history of fifteen centuries of the suffering of the Baptist people and their martyrdom at the hands of the catholic church. A list of popes up to the time it was written is included in the back. It proves that Baptists existed long before Martin Luther, and were martyred for such sins as reading the Bible and Baptizing adults after they were saved. It is impossible to deny these facts because this book documented these horrors and was written hundreds of years ago, before political correctness came into being, using the records of governments most of which have since been destroyed. The names of hundreds of individual Baptist people are recorded along with descriptions of the accusations against them, their tortures and death. It is detailed, and too graphic for children.

The story of the Anabaptists is one of incredible pain and spiritual triumph. This impressive work was written in the seventeenth century and recounts the stories of many men and women who suffered and often faced terrible death for what they thought was right. Apart from individuals stories, the book contains many emotionally touching letters written by martyrs to their families and friends. The book also describes the sufferings of some of the early Christians and the later Waldensians.
The legacy of the Anabaptists lives on in the Amish and Mennonites. In fact, an article about Amish forgiveness in the aftermath of the recent tragic school shooting was one of the things that brought this book to my attention. Personally, I feel Christians of any denomination could take something useful from this book.
Overall, "Martyr's Mirror" is an extremely powerful and moving book.

This is an excellent work and a great accompaniment to Foxes' Book of Martyrs. It is an enormous volume with much information I have not seen before.
I highly recommend it as an addition to every Christian's library, and to anyone studying the subject of martyrdom.

A part of my family research - but brings the sadness, the strength and the Christian conviction to a very harsh reality. Something all of us from those roots need to read.
