This is a beautiful leather bound bible. The thing that attracted me was the price. Also, with 9-point bright text, red letter, the works. I bought bibles for my church and friends. The scofield study bible is one of (if not) the best bible out there. For the student/pastor/lay person - it is easy to understand and with the NIV version you cannot go wrong. So go ahead and treat yourself to a good bible. You will love it.

Has become my everyday Bible
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-17
This has become my everyday carry around Bible. The quality is sufficient. The feel is balanced and reassuring (it does not feel like it's going to fall apart or easily crease). It's not too heavy or too big for a study Bible. The font is acceptable for such a small book.

CON: Okay, the pages are on the thin side... some bleed-through
It by no means is a "pocket" Bible. Thick

Looking for a quality Bible with study helps and portability? Grab this one... you will not be disappointed. I'm not!

A Compact Treasure in High Quality Package

Review Date: 2007-06-18
First of all, let's get past several bones which seems to get stuck in many people's teeth: not everyone will agree with everything C. I. Scofield taught and, study bibles which include notes always exhibit biases reflecting a particular approach to scripture. But that's what all teachers in the Body of Christ provide and we are to make use of them as best we can regardless (Eph. 4:11). If you dislike C. I. Scofield's teaching or don't believe that a dispensational approach to interpreting scripture is sound, then you won't like this bible. But, if like me, you understand dispensationalism to be the result of sound biblical interpretation, then this "pocket edition" is an amazing bible study companion.

First, let me say that Oxford University press has produced a beautiful work of high quality--which really cannot be found anywhere else in this form factor or for this price. The genuine leather and sewn binding are first-rate. Due to its pocket size, this bible is thick for its width and height. Yet it lays open beautifully, nor due the pages stick together like so many new bibles. The paper itself is high quality, not skimpy and is whiter than most. In short, the pocket edition of this work is as high quality as most high-end bibles (ala Cambridge) costing 3-4 times as much. For a compact version, it is hard to imagine a nicer package.

Regarding the contents: this is the fully updated Scofield Study Bible with all the modern improvements and revisions (clarifications, charts, tables, and full set of study helps at the rear. The study aids include: the complete index to subject chain references (6 pages), a thorough subject index (37 pages), an index of proper names (29 pages), and a real concordance (61 pages). In regard to the concordance: it is the same concordance as the full-size Scofield (which is abbreviated from the concordance found in the revised MacArthur Study and Baptist Study editions of the NKJV). Still, a strong concordance compared with the embarrassments which are typically passed-off these days. This is a red-letter edition (words of Christ in red).

It also bears mentioning that Oxford has not succumbed to the postmodern mantra of our age so often found in modern study bibles: wasting precious print space for eye candy. (The Nelson NKJV Study bible being a prime example which comes to mind where visually appealing insets are so commonplace that useful information suffers at the hands of visual presentation.) Very little space is wasted. Indexes are real indexes--whoever did these indexes understands that an index is only as good as it connects the searcher's concept with the destination material. A refreshing change from the flimsy charts or tables which many study bibles have which purport to be indexed helps.

Older folks will need glasses to read this text: it is quite small--as one would expect--it's a pocket edition, right?! Still, it amazes me how well Oxford University Press has done 'shrinking down' the update Scofield Study Bible into this small package while retaining all the information while retaining quality.

In summary, if you are looking for a handy-size, high quality study bible which upholds the literal interpretation of Scripture and refuses to spiritualize away God's promises or find prophetic fulfillment in approximations, I highly recommend the genuine leather version of this work (ISBN 0-19-527568-3).

Critical Things to Consider

I bought this book when I got remarried in 1995, and we will be celebrating 12 successful years together. This book affirmed exactly the process that we were going through early in our marriage. It made us really think about and negotiate our expectations for each other and our children. Although there were bumps along the way, this book gave us critical things to consider to successful navigate the road we are on.

Excellent / informative / frightening!

I borrowed this book from a friend because I was interested in the issues involved in becoming a stepparent. The author, a professional family counselor, writes from his own experience, incorporates the experiences of other couples, and gives advice from a Biblical perspective. I anticipated some of the ideas that were presented, but there is SO MUCH to think about that I had not even considered! I recommend this book for anyone who is considering becoming a stepparent, especially if he or she has children of his or her own. Don't say "I do" until you know what you're getting into!

Stan Kent has created one of the most fascinating characters ever in Violetta Valery Cutrero. He takes us into an ever increasing world of thrilling madness. You won't be able to put this book down. It's fantastic!!!

Excellent; pushes the envelopes of both erotica and thriller

Even having read Kent's earlier fiction, "Shoe Leather" was so much more than I expected. Kent has managed to simultaneously expand the perameters of both the erotica and thriller genres, as well as introduce a lovable heroine with an ingenious "super-power," the likes of which neither genre has ever seen. Gripping, funny and genuinely tension-filled, "Shoe Leather" is groundbreaking in so many ways, I'm actually surprised a small publisher was daring enough to take a chance on putting it out. If Mr Kent hasn't yet written a script version, he needs to get right on it. Until then, I hope we can expect more adventures with Violetta.

This Siddur is an excellent prayer book for both orthodox and ultra-orthodox congregations. Unlike many orthodox Siddur's which soley utilize Hebrew only, this book presents the English translation which is vital to Jews of today. The Siddur is also a great reference book which also provides the necessary blessing and prayers for the life cycle events.

Wonderful Craftsmanship

I received this Bible as a gift at my ordination. It is a very well made Bible and handsomely put together. The lifetime warranty is astounding, and yet I still find myself keeping it in the box, so as not to scratch or ruin it.

It has been a great tool in study, and if you want conservative notes, has excellent notes in it.

A few things:

1. For those who are looking for "THE King James", the spellings of many words have been Americanized (Savior instead of Saviour, etc.). This does not bother me, just thought some might be interested in that.

2. I am NOT a KJV only person and I laugh every time I read the notes that help you understand what is being said in the old English. Usually, it is very similar to what the NLT would say.

3. The 2 silk markers are very nice for doing read through the Bible and holding 2 spots.

4. This Bible MAKES me want to read and study, it is so nice.

5. Every once in while, I have found myself at odds with the opinions of the note writers (nothing unusual in any study Bible) and would recommend that readers determine doctrine for themselves, rather than take wholesale any note. (Always a good rule of thumb)

6. There is some excellent introduction material on how to study the Bible at the beginning.

7. Maps are OK, I guess I really like maps so am more inclined to use Baker's Bible Atlas or some such other resource. Good for quick reference.

Overall, an excellent Bible.

Simplicity as it's best.

This physical word of God is like holding a newborn in your palms. Wonderful to the eye...wonderful to the touch. It conforms to your hands. Open the pages, and the design and style are magnificent. The study guide is clear and consis, and will give the reader a thirst for exploration. The cross reference is always good for reproving, as well as the hands on explanation of key verses. To the newbie King James reader, this is a great first step for the fact that the reference tools provided are spoken in good old Yankee English, so it is immediately accessible, unlike the NKJ study that seems to be a bit too wordy, and the print too small and hard to read. I much prefer this edition for that reasoning. I've examined many studies. They all have their merit. This is simply...the best, for me at least.

This book was one of the best that I have read in a long time. I love the realness that the book gives of the DC area. I read it on a airplane trip from NY to LA. I could not put it down. I really like the way that he finally puts the Republican party in a good light! You should read this book. It was thrilling!

Solomons Songs is a very heart warming book. You can tell that the arthor opened himself to the love he felt for that special person in his life. Thank God he put in to paper so that we can all see what true love can be. The passion he writes is remarkable, such warmth and lust can be felt from each page. All I can say is the special person that he is writing to is a very blessed woman. If you want to feel the many different stages of love, get this book. The arthor will touch each and every stage with great detail. You will feel what he felt. I highly recommend this book. It is easy to read and will keep you wanting to read it through before stopping. It is perfect for a gift to someone that you love. It will say the things that you couldn't seem to express.

I've had this Bible for years now and it the most used in my home! It is so easy to find what I am looking for and it has so much material that I learn something valuable daily! I really enjoy the devotionals because they are like mini-bible studies. The quotes throught the book really make one think and all the facts and stories about women of faith really give it something extra and special that one doesn't find in any other Bible. I love this Bible so much!

a beautiful womens devotional bible

I have had many, many bibles in my lifetime but this one far exceeds them all. It "LOOKS" like a womens devotional bible. Titles and excepts are done in purple, the Dear Friend readings are exceptionally beautiful and scriptural. This will no doubt be my most used bible for devotional time. It is also the New King James Version. I have been on the King James Only band wagon for years but to tell you the truth, it is just too hard for me. I spend most of my reading time just trying to figure out what certain words mean. By the time I understand the ancient word I have lost the context meaning. I really believe that "spiritual discernment" really means that a person understands that the Bible is Gods Word and He means for us to take it to heart and "live it". That would also mean that it has to be in a language that we not only understand but that we speak. I think that the New King James does just that. If you are looking for a Bible that is just for a woman and is beautiful....... you won't be disappointed with this one. Many Blessings!
