Beautiful Message, Beautiful Book

This not only contains the 'Message' of the God of Creation, it is wrapped in an oh so soft and lovely cover that it is double joy to read and understand! There are some issues here and there as to the translation itself from a scholarly point of view but for getting the true 'message', it is superior! Fun to read, delightful to hold, easy on the eyes, just a wonderful edition! It is good to have another translation available to compare with as the author suggests, just to round out the thought.

I have tried many times in the past to read the King James Version Bible to no avail. I would have trouble understanding the language of the time and soon loose interest. The Message is well written and easy to understand. I have enjoyed this version of the Bible. This is actually my second purchase and is used for travel. I have the Message in Large Print for home. If you have wanted to learn more about God, Jesus and the Bible without the struggle, try this. I would recommend highly.

Excellent Bible

This Bible has the christian fish positioned in the shape of a cross on the front cover for those wondering. I needed this info when looking for this specific version. As far as the the written words...I am so happy with this Bible. I have been looking for a way to really get excited about reading and doing my daily devotions. This is exactly what I needed. It may not be you're choice version to take with you to church because following along may be difficult, but when it comes to really reading the Bible, this is it. I can sit down and read without having to stop and try to figure out what it means and then try to see how it relates to me. It just makes sense and you get it the moment the words flash before you're eyes. I would recommend this Bible to anyone who wants to really understand what the Bible is saying to us.

melts like butter

In this review I am not addressing the issue of the translation itself, simply the asthetics of this particular edition. Navpress has done a fine job of packaging The Message in a beautiful, pliable leather binding that melts like butter in your hands. It is an example of how Bibles should feel when you hold them, --it nealy invites you to pick it up and read it! It is attractive, the black leather is embossed with silver and the Bible has silver on the edges of the pages. It has one black ribbon and is nicely laid out with a single column, left-justified text with generous space for copious notes. The verses are still not to my satisfaction, they could be slightly darker and the font is a tad too small, but it is printed on an off-white paper that is easy on the eyes.
The paper is thin, reminding me of the days when "India" paper was used in Bibles. It is a great Bible for guys or gals and something that beckons to be picked up and read, --something a Bible should do!

Where to find Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit Series and other Spurgeon books

Since Amazon doesn't appear to currently carry these volumes, I'm posting this information on where to find new copies.

Pilgrim Publications currently publishes new reprints of the entire Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit series, New Park Street Pulpit series, Sword and Trowel series, and most other Spurgeon books.

You can buy them from various places, including Cumberland Valley Bible Book Service (a large Reformed bookseller), who has most of them in stock.

(Note: I'm not affiliated with either of these companies)

Spurgeon's finest!

Many books are published these days with the name "Spurgeon" on them. However, so many of these books are edited down adaptations of something Spurgeon wrote or preached. Too often these "books" are actually 3 or 4 sermons cut apart and taped together into a book format. The unfortunate result is that much of Spurgeon's beliefs, exhortations, and theology are lost, and all that remains is his poetic style. Few publishers have remained true to the real Spurgeon, instead using his name to sell books and make money. Their finished product is watered-down milk, psychology at best, instead of the real meat of the real Spurgeon's preaching.

This book, however, is the REAL Spurgeon! This is a collection of over 50 of his sermons, the REAL unedited sermons, and many more expositions of Scripture as they were published in 1892. Read this book and hear the meat of Spurgeon, the depth and conviction with which he preached, and the consistency with which his theology rests upon Scripture.

And these sermons are not just historical pieces; they are useful to us even today! No Christian can read this book and not find his soul challenged, uplifted, convicted, and educated in knowledge and wisdom. The Victorian Londoners found Spurgeon's ministry to be all these things, and since that time it has had its effect on so many others, too - and it can have that effect on you!

This book is published by Banner of Truth, one of the greatest publishing houses of our day. Their faithfulness to truth is an example to the publishers who just seek to publish what will sell.

This book is a great shelf volume, well-bound and durable. Read it every day, and it will still wear well.

Perhaps you've heard the new Spurgeon, the one created by so many modern publishers and editors. If you want to know what his sermons were REALLY like, and if you want your soul to be taught and ministered to by the "Prince of Preachers" himself, read this book!

A reprint of the Missale Romanum 1962, the current Extraordinary Rite of the Roman Catholic Church. Reproduced with the gracious permission of Cardinal John J. O'Connor. This is a masterfully reproduced book, down to the smallest detail. Smyth-sewn binding, tabbed pages, illustrations, quality Finch vanilla paper, 2-color pages throughout, gold-gilded pages all round, ribbon markers in the liturgical colors, rich red leather hardcover.

Excellent Full Size Altar Missal of 1962
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-12-20
This is an excellent full-sized high-quality exact reproduction of the Missale Romanum of Pope John XXIII, containing the alterations current as of 25 July 1960 and issued in 1962. It is highly recommended for use with the restored Roman Catholic liturgy of the Missale Romanum of 1962.

It is large because it is intended for altar use. It weighs almost six pounds. It is 100 percent Latin, as is proper for such a missal. It comes with 11 pre-placed leather place-tabs, plus a package of five that may be applied by the user as required. It also has six placekeeping ribbons (two red, two green, one white, one violet).

It is alleged to have been manufactured in Germany, but I have found no printer's imprint for the original or the reproduction printing houses, though some pages indicate that the original was printed in Belgium.

Some items of note:
(1) The text does NOT include the addition to the Canon of the Mass of St. Joseph, which was added to the Mass in February, 1962. A self-adhesive sticker is supplied that may be used to add this change by replacing three existing lines of text with four modified lines, in exactly the same space (page 293).
(2) A copy of the Decretum which promulgated the above change is provided.
(3) The Table of Moveable Feasts (page xxxvii) lists data from 1962 to 2003 (no later years).
(4) The text (page 161) does not reflect the alteration made to the Good Friday prayer for conversion of the Jews, made by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007.
(5) There are no designs or inscriptions on the back leather cover. When the Missal is in place on the altar and set, as is customary, to open from the left, there will only be blank red leather exposed.

I received this book as a present, which prompted me to purchase two copies to give to friends. This book is a "must" for anyone who is interested in morning Devotionals. So many times something will happen during the day that was addressed that morning. Spurgeon is simply wonderful. Purchase with confidence, you will not be disappointed.

Finally - the edition we've been waiting for

As far as devotions go, Morning and Evening is (in my opinion) the best. It is theological as well as pastoral. You can see Charles Spurgeon's great pastoral heart come out on each section as he shows the glory of Christ through the Bible and implores those who do not know him to seek Christ at this present moment.

This isn't a devotional that focus on the "easy" verses. It takes the entire Bible as its canvas and works out using some obscure areas to drive home points I wouldn't have seen on first glance.

This edition is even better - splitting the two up (so, from what I assume you keep Evening by Evening at your bed side table - and take Morning by Morning with you) into two nice small editions. They are made with that DuoTone material which comes off very nice in blue (morning) and white (evening). They feel good to the hands and having a bookmark in each is stellar. I find myself reading this more because I am reading two separate books, so I am not always concerned about follow along perfectly.

If you need a devotion, I can't recommend any one more than this and with the edition of the ESV (one of the most readable and poetic translations) you can't go wrong. I can't recommend this one enough.

Whether you personally like Howard Dean or not is beside the point: he has moved the Democratic Party light years into the future. If you're a Democrat, you should understand that history in order to honor it. If you're a Republican, you should understand that history in order to surpass it. And if you're a Nader supporter, have I got a bone to pick with you . . .

This is an excellent book, and will be interesting to anyone who cares about political organizing and democratic power. It is a very unusual political memoir, written by people who participated at all levels of the campaign, each of whom speaks from his or her own point of view. The authors offer frank, searching assessments of the campaign's many successes and failures. They also tell wonderfully compelling stories drawn from both the heights and depths of the movement.

This is a reaaly good read. A love story told during WWII. About a Marine that misses the family, friends and girl he left behind at a time in history that belongs to the greatest generation. A time when family values and morals acually meant something. The battles in the South Pacific with the Japanesse that where fought by the Marines and the Navy must be recognized as just important as the war in Europe and Germany. The Marine Raiders of WWII are the begining of what the Green Beret, Navy Seals, and Special Forces are today. Most people do not know that the Marines were on their way to invade Japan when the war ended. Thus turning an attack into the Occupation of Japan.

Very Good Reading

This was a wonderful depiction of the War and the time the author spent in the Marines and his love for his beloved Helen. I couldn't put the book down and read practically the entire book in one night. Very education to me also.

This is a beautiful daily devotional with simple, straight-forward messages that stir your soul. Several years ago I had heard that this book is President George W. Bush's favorite. I always meant to check it out, but never did until I went shopping one day and saw it on sale. I bought one, and I love it so much I bought 2 more to give to my friends.

Max Lucado is right; the NCV is the most concise, understandable and relevant Bible version of our time. It was developed by a team of scholars some 20 years ago, some of whom worked on the NKJV and the NIV. Their mission was to shorten the sentences, use common language, and use familar phrases. The result is a smooth, readable, user-friendly Bible that's hard to put down.

As someone who's used many versions of the Bible, I can testify to the power contained in simple words and direct language. Max Lucado, who some would say is a wordsmith, makes this his Bible of choice. I've read concepts that never registered in other versions that were fresh and totally alive in the NCV. What's most important is that the NCV kept me reading. I wanted to do my devotions with it because it began to be relevant and exciting. I am not a new Christian, nor am I a teen or twenty-something. I am in my 40's now, and thank God for the NCV. It clarifies what was once a jumble of words that just sounded elegant, but had no meaning. Rick Warren uses the NCV in the Purpose Driven Life in many of the daily devotions. This language is a great bridge between young and old, rich and poor, seasoned and non-seasoned Christians.

This large print version makes the words even more readable and lively. I love it when Scripture comes alive. THE NCV large-print, personal size Bible is relevant to today's culture, written in words that make sense. It's also a very stylish, well proportioned Bible that will have you reading for hours. God bless you all!

This is a great Bible. 3 groups of translators(including the King James version translators) got together to retranslate from th original to our current language removing many errors. It even has the Strong's concordance.

I purchased this from a Borders Outlet store. There's not that much to say, other than it's a great, compact little Bible that is unmatched in it's clarity and readability. The binding is more vinyl than leather, but there is little to distract the reader. The pages are silver gilded and there ia a red ribbon marker. The text is small and clear. The font is readable and the layout is very pleasing. This Bible will truly fit a large pocket. The NCV is highly recommended by the likes of Max Lucado who has stated that you don't just read the NCV, you experience it. This compact Bible is great for school, work or even Bible study!
