There are a paucity of books extolling the history of single Formula One designs. The Lotus 49 is one of the few that have been done twice. David Hodges did a piece in period, one that should be treasured by collectors, but one that also falls short of telling the complete story. Michael Oliver's effort is one of love for the car. It is extensive in its coverage of the story of the Lotus 49 but is probably not truly the complete story. Not for lack of effort, because Oliver has tracked down and interviewed just about all of the living participants, from designer and drivers, to the mechanics who kept them running. But because, unfortunately, many of the key players have exited the stage and their contributions are missed. Still Oliver managed to tell the story of the Lotus 49 and the Cosworth Ford DFV quite effectively. The story of both the car and the engine are integral, making fodder for the debate over whether it was the car or it's powerplant that was responsible for the successes. Although the driver lineup that included all 5 of Lotus' world champions surely had an impact.

In attempting to be complete and include all of the details Oliver could have easily reverted to an all too common style of documentation where each race is described in a boring litany of what driver drove which chassis and finished in which place. Instead he weaves the vital statistics into a prose style story littered with interesting tidbits from the mouths of the drivers and mechanics. Interspersed throughout the book are "First Person" vignettes like Keith Duckworth on Jim Clark and Graham Hill and Mario Andretti on the Lotus 49. These jewels make the book. Just about every page has a photograph, often depicting the story told in the text, many of which were culled from private collections and have never before been published.

The history of each chassis and it's current location is given at the end and is so up to date as to include the current whereabouts of the Rob Walker car sold at auction this past Summer.

Lotus 49 the Story of a Legend is available in three versions. The Standard in a Gold Leaf colored dust jacket, the British Racing Green covered, and a leather bound edition, each with a successively higher price. Collectors can buy the expensive ones. Enthusiasts really ought to pony up the dough to get the standard edition. It is a well told entertaining story of an important part of Lotus and Formula One history.

What a book! One of the best about a Formula 1 car.

A book not only about the Lotus 49, but also about the men like K.Duckworth, C.Chapman, J.Clark, G.Hill, J.Rindt and many others that made one of the greatest legends in formula 1 history. You can learn much more about these people than in their biography books. All about the context, the cars, the people, the races and the opposition is told mainly by the the men(alive today) involved, who tell the story based in their recollections with their words. You can't stop from reading the 250 pages with hundreds of incredible b.w. & color photos, most of it from personal collections. I hope that Michael Oliver, the author, makes more books about the others fabulous Lotus formula 1 like the 25, 33, 72, 78, 79 and more! A mandatory book to all the Lotus admires and even every formula 1 enthusiast.

This is the first compilation that I have ever read by Marvin Kaye, and I must say,he has excellent taste. These stories range from romantic to revolting; from midly funny to outright absurd. Some of the writers of these short stories I have now added to my list of favorite authors. The diversity is truly amazing. Mr. Kaye must have spent a great deal of time reading these stories and editing them into the perfect order. Absolutely wonderful!

One of Kaye's bets anthologies.

Marvi Kaye is an excellent anthology editor, and this is probably one of his finest anthologies. It includes not only short stories, but also poetry and even one short play. The dark aspects of love are thouroughly explored, in everything from stark realism, to fantasy, science fiction, horror, comedy; the variety is impressive, but Kaye manages to create unity of it all through his careful sub-thematic arrangement: Odd Couples, Worldly Love, Not of this World, Out of this World and Fatal Attractions. The selections flow into one another masterfully, and I can honestly say that not a single one of them could be considered bad;they were all of exceeding quality. I would be hard pressed to even recommend some of them over others; the book is so well arranged that each individual piece seems to play its part for the perfect final effect.

This compilation of prayers and other material is very useful to the clergy or lay leader who may not fell quite comfortable "praying as they go". This book has a number of thoughtful prayers for many occasions that can be a great comfort to people of all ages. I use this in my ministry to the home-bound and I may not use the prayer itself, but it reminds me of areas that might be covered in an ad hoc prayer. In fact while visiting one of our members, his son said he was piloting his plane later that day. Sure enough, their was a prayer for an aviator.

It is a welcome addition to anyone doing ministry.

Just today, I spent a bit of time with my son reciting the Evening Prayer and the Easter Prayer. How wonderful to have a quick reference to guide me in earnest prayers. I do not like praying by rote, and this little book gives me enough to form my own thoughts and expand on the prayers, as well as explore the reasons Luther chose his words. For Lutherans, the whole book is great. For non-Lutheran Christians, 95% of the book will not contradict your doctrine. There are mentions of infant baptism and the presence of the true body and blood in communion. This should not in any way detract from the entirety of the book. I use books by Larkin and D. James Kennedy and can overlook doctrinal differences in order to benefit from their knowledge. Hopefully non-Lutherans can learn from arguably the most influential man in recent Church history.

The name "Maltese Cat" is so famous in polo world. I really love this book and read it very often to my children.
The story is about a polo game in India. The SKIDARS against the ARCHANGELS. Maltese Cat is the captain of the Skidars ponies is telling the story, all odds are against them but they are fighting till the glorious victory!!
Like all of the players and ponies in the polofields all over the world.
I'm sure that my ponies also do like the game and all of our ponies are playing the game as well.
It's fun!!

Absolutely delightful!

Being a polo player myself, I found The Maltese Cat a very interesting and accurate view of the game. Being from the ponies perspective is original and entertaining and it makes me wonder what my ponies are thinking when I play them!

Loved reading it to pieces and can read it over and over again...

EXCELLENT reference tool for those in management!

Having been in management for more than 10 years, I found this book highly informative and wise in its counsel. Each of the seventeen chapters focuses on one area of troubleshooting. Within each troubleshooting area, there are up to nine scenarios in which one may choose which best fits one's problem situation. And, then, after each scenario, possible causes and cures along with "something to think about" are provided. In addition to all of this information -- and this is a real plus -- each scenario is labled a "shark" or an "elephant" or a "wolf"! This enables you, the manager, to prioritize your problems and when to troubleshoot them. For example, if a problem is labled a "shark," it requires your total attention right now (p. viii)! As evidenced by my comments, I strongly recommend this book for every manager's reference shelf

The best "common sense" book on management I've seen.

This handbook was my best friend during some very difficult management years. I would often refer to it when dealing with some sticky problem, and I was always impressed with the "common sense" approach. The brief scenarios and the page or two devoted to the problem was all I ever had time for. I give it to all of my colleagues who are becoming managers for the first time.

"Mary With Us -- God With Us"

"Mary Day By Day" . . . not a book to be "read" . . . but a ssmall portable volume to be "prayed".

It is printed in a calendar format as a 'daily meditation" . . and can be used in that manner to span a year's meditation on Mary, The Mother of God. However, it can be also simply used as a "prayer help" anytime and anywhere. Open this small pocket-sized book at random and you will encounter a scripture verse . . . then a "reflection" or meditation thought on how Mary's reality can affect our own life . . . and then a "prayer".

These may all serve as "jump-off points" to enkindle our own encounter with The Mother Of God in scripture and in our own life's journey.

Prayer and meditation often comes about easily and on its own . . . but just as frequestly it seems an "arid desert wasteland" . . and it helpts to have a booklet like this to breathe a life and soul into our prayer . . . and to have Mary, the Mother of Jesus presented to our minds and hearts to guide us and even to be "present" to us in helping us to arrange our own thoughts and expressions of need to God. This booklet helps to accomplish that . . and in a small convenient pocket-volume that can travel with us easily and anywhere . . . and like Mary herself, it is never a cumbertsome inconvenince or burden . . . just a friend, a companion and a help.

Eastern Philosophy with a Western Interpretation

Charles F. Haanel has written a great How-To for mind, body and life. I've studied and read many books on the topics of Yi Quan and Taoism. The Master Keys system provides a great approach to the same topic without the need to understand cultural references or worry the author transalated an idea correctly. Yi Quan and Taoism focus on many simple principles one of them being the training of stillness. Sometimes the authors or interpreters of the Eastern texts conflict with each other when dealing with methods of acquiring skills through stillness. The Master Keys simplifies the process by breaking the book down into weekly training chapters. You master each chapter individually before moving forward. This is brilliantly laid out because your not left asking "what do I do now?". For anybody interested in understanding why the mind is powerful and how to train it, this book is for you. If you've read any Eastern Texts on the subject, this book may open the doors of understanding by providing a western perspective to the same topic. This book is awesome.

I'm a 38 year old seminarian. While I strongly suggest the ESV translation for Bible study (which provides word for word Greek to English translation), it is nice to have a NT Bible that is a thought by thought translation in contemporary language. No, if you are a student of the New Testament, you should not base your theology on this book, since the translation is very loose, but if you A) already know the Bible well via the ESV, NIV, KJV or Greek OR B) want to understand the basic concepts in the Bible, then this is a great book to have. He understands the general thoughts of what the Bible is teaching and he explains it in today's language. It's a GREAT travel or bedtime Bible. Don't let the Bible snobs tell you different. While this shouldn't be your only Biblical text, it should be one of them.

I have always used the New King James Version for my Bible study and it was interesting to see the NKJV in a parallel with The Message. Though I don't use The Message for my Bible study, I do find it useful when something in the NKJV needs clarification, or a modern translation as the author saw it. An interesting read, indeed.

I bought the hardcover version of this parallel Bible. I have always wanted to read the Message translation, but I knew it was a paraphrase and not good for doctrine. With the NKJV alongside the message you can still get the benefit of reading the message, but be grounded by a real literal translation alongside.

I read Romans 8 this morning I would read a few verses in the NKJV then read the same verses in the Message. What an eye opening way of studying the Scriptures. Mixing the accuracy of the NKJV with the mind blowing Message is a potent combination.

I highly recommend this strange marriage of Bible versions to illuminate the scriptures to a new generation of Bible students. Superb.
