I purchased this book for my husband, who is a huge Notre Dame Fan. He has several books about Notre Dame, but this is his favorite. He liked this book so much that we purchased another copy for our son-in-law, who is also a Notre Dame Fan, for Christmas this year. A must have for all Notre Dame Fans.

This is the sort of book from which one doesn't know exactly what to expect. It's clear from the clever cover and layout that author Rich Wolfe approached the project with a wry sense of humor. Where many of the more slickly-produced coffee table books on Notre Dame feature color photographs and re-hash the events of some of the most memorable Fighting Irish games, this item provides multiple perspectives from alumni, fans, former players, media personalities, and even a rival or two. The are amusing anecdotes such as Michigan quarterback Tom Brady sneaking into Notre Dame Stadium on the night before a game only to find himself locked in. Another fascinating story involves a behind-the-scenes account of the first night game at Notre Dame. It's a breeze of a read and certainly worth the reasonable price. Perfect for a plane ride or next to the bed...where a bible should be.

This is simply the best. The best, the best. I also recommend For The Original Overeaters Anonymous Very Low Carbohydrate Food Plan: Greysheet Recipes. This is a beautiful book. I bought it because I'm on the very low carb food plan. It has great recipes. I really like the protein and vegetable recipes. I can never think of enough things to do with vegetables. Now I know what other people are cooking. I'm glad to learn more about phone and in person meetings. I never knew where the term "greysheet" came from. I have wanted to learn more about it for a long time.

As The Dowager Marchioness of Salisbury writes in her comprehensive Introduction, "In recorded time, the story of the gardens at Hatfield begins in the early years of the seventeenth century, but my imagination plays with the idea that the tale could have begun forty years earlier, with the seeds of their creation being sown in the mind of a young boy......" She presents much more than a chronicle of recreation in her introduction; she also offers an intriguing story.

The Dowager Marchioness is an expert guide as she lived at Hatfield House until 2004 where she planned and oversaw the recreation of this incomparably beautiful garden covering some 45 acres of the 7000 acre estate. Described by one as the greatest British gardener of the twentieth century, she takes readers on aan all-encompassing tour of this remarkable garden as her vision for it is fulfilled.

Photographer Sue Snell, an acclaimed documentary and horticultural photographer, is an astute recorder as she follows the garden's progress over a period of eight years in all seasons. Some 250 color photographs superbly illustrate the 144 page text.

A double page plan of the garden gives readers an overview of the terrain as well as an appreciation for the scope of this undertaking. The volume is divided into four sections, the North, which includes approaches and the North Court. We find the Old Palace in the West section as well as the Lime Walk and the lovely Holly Walk and the Wilderness.

The Mount Garden, found in the South section, is breathtaking. Finally, the East section features a grand Orchard, delectable Kitchen Garden, and what estate is complete without a Vineyard?

Not only garden lovers but all will enjoy and treasure this beautifully rendered volume.

Together with books by Gurinire, Mseler, and Podhasky (see these) this too is a very important book concerning classical dressage. The text gives the impression of being written with considerable thought...this contrasts somewhat with some modern dressage texts. This text together with Gurnire's is recomendable.

Once you get over the different style of font and familiarize yourself with the vocabulary this book privides for some exciting reading. This man must have been a genius. He provides detail description of how to loosen up your young horse in the shoulders and further work and excercises in a precise way which still pertains to the basics how we ride today. Its sometimes good to go back to the original scourses.

Gentleman's Companion or Experiences of the Grand Bon Vivant

I first chanced upon this two-volume collection of recipes almost thirty years ago when I was a student at the University of South Florida, and I became immediately enamoured of it. The author, one Charles Henry Baker, Jr., describes anecdotally how he (seemingly) spent the better part of the 1920s and 1930s drinking and eating his way around the world - several times, rubbing elbows with the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Frank Buck, Douglas Fairbanks and other adventurers of the time.

In his far-ranging travels, Baker ferreted out the most intriguing and exotic restaurants and watering holes of the time from Shanghai to Key West, assiduously recording and compiling receipts (as he calls recipes) and concoctions galore. Baker shares these recipes with the reader in the form of well-detailed and often amusing remembrances of his first and sometimes subsequent encounters with the dish or drink. Many of the establishments he visited and chronicled are now legendary or nostalgically remembered. From the Raffles Hotel in Singapore to Shepperds in Cairo to the Grand Bretagne in Athens, Baker paints the reader an epicure's picture of a very different time and world long lost to us.

Although his prose were probably somewhat tortured even in the 1930s when the book was first published, they make for interesting if not amusing reading today. In fact, Baker's style as a raconteur amplifies and potentiates his narrative of those long-ago experiences, and his sheer enjoyment of life pushes through even the most obscure verbiage. This man was a giant among bon vivants. He lived life to the fullest and with such flair and conviction that one cannot help but be envious - if not in awe - of his exploits and adventures.

Baker, an interesting character, was born in 1895, and when not travelling, hung out down in Coconut Grove - way back when it really was a Bohemian artist's place to be. He was at various times a writer for the old Town and Country and Esquire magazines, penned a few other collections, once even tried his hand at a novel, and he is still quoted in the drink-crafting tomes. But first and foremost - without a doubt - Baker was the Grand Bon Vivant

Reading this book is like taking a trip back to a long lost past when people still dressed for dinner at Raffles and Shepheard's Hotel and when the Orient and the South Pacific were still very exotic and romantic destinations that few had visited. I don't know anyone who has ever regretted buying this book or the companion volume of food recipes which is equally marvelous.

Are you lucky enough to come accross a real bottle of Absinith?
Want to know what to do with it? Think you do already? Well do you know how to fix a "Fripo's Balloon"? They call it that because after a couple, your head just floats right off your sholders. You do want to know how to prepare potatoes by boiling them in a kettle of pine resin, Right! My Aunt was one of the wealthiest women in the world during the 1920's-40's. She gave me her set, Vol.I&II. God bless her. You know Earnest H. once said "If you're feeling bad chances are you either haven't had enough to drink or need some spicy food" These editions have it all, told in the quaint "ivy-liege-vernacular" of Fitzgearld's day. Hell, I'm a baby boomer, but I still appreciate Hemingways cure for a hangover....a beaker of cruched ice filled with Holland Gin..etc..etc.. Do your self a favor BUY THIS BOOK! I really shouldn't be telling you all this as I want every copy out there for my friends. By the way, there's even advice on how to revive a person who has hung themselves, either because they were weary of life, or had followed Hemingways advice.

An excellent book of high quality

Review Date: 2004-04-09
This is an excellent book of high quality which merits the attention of sudents of both the French and Indian War and George Washington. The many portrait images are clear and sharp. The images of the 11 manuscript pages are not easy to read, but to a large extent this appears to be due to the condition of the document, which is over 200 years old. Nevertheless, it is fascinating to see the actual handwriting of Washington in one of his few autobiographical efforts. The actual content of the manuscript appears in highly readable transcript immediately following the images of the manuscript pages. A preliminary "Note to the Reader" suggests reading the transcript first before attempting to read Washington's handwriting. Following the transcript are 77 annotations by Martin West, the highly regarded director of Fort Ligonier and author of numerous historical articles on the French and Indian War.In some respects, these scholarly, yet concise annotations are the most interesting aspect of this book. The book also contains an excellent essay on "Young Washington" by Don Higgenbotham of the University of North Carolina and an essay, "Biography and Autobiography" by Rosemarie Zagarri of George Mason University, placing Washington's autobiographical manuscript remarks in the context of Lt. Col. David Humphreys' intended biography of Washington. The book concludes with an interesting essay by Professor Fred Anderson of the University of Colorado, author of "Crucible of War", probably the definitive book on the French and Indian War.Two appendices follow. The first is a fascinating explanation of the conservation of the manuscript by the conservator, Christine Smith. The second appendix,by Burton Kummerow, will be of considerable benefit to those interested in historical tourism. It is a guide to the historic French and Indian War sites mentioned in Washington's manuscript.A previous reviewer remarked negatively on the book's omission of the defeat of troops under Major James Grant of the Forbes Expedition in 1758. This is explained by the fact that Washington had no direct knowledge of this engaggement. At the time of Grant's Defeat, Washington was more than 100 miles away in Raystown (Bedford, PA). Washington's only knowledge of the event was based on hearsay. One of the principal values of the Washington manuscript is that it is a primary source.Neither it nor the book purports to be an exhaustive accounting of all the events of the French and Indian War, so criticism based on the omission of one's personal favorite event seems unfair. Those who purchase this book will be glad they did.

The hand of Providence acting in our time

This richly illustrated and thoroughly documented book preserves and perpetuates George Washington's ONLY autobiographical account: Here he recalls the world war that he started, the war that transformed North America, and created the United States and Canada. "Big picture" historians will delight in the accompanying essays by Professors Anderson, Higginbotham, and Zagarri. Those concerned with historical specificities and historic sites will applaud the thoroughness of annotators Martin West and Burton Kummerow. All of us wanting to SEE the 18th century will appreciate the collection of portraits and maps assembled here. In this volume, the marble Washington morphs back into the real person he once was: a middle-aged man at yet another decisive turning point in his career (the first-ever Presidency lay just ahead) thinking back to his resume-ruining role in the series of disasters launching the Seven Years' War (French and Indian War). What did it all mean? How had he ended up at THIS juncture? In wrestling with this memoir, he comes to understand that he had been preserved by Providence for the enormous challenge ahead. We should all be thankful that he was; and thankful for the guiding hand of Providence that preserved the manuscript and makes accessible this compelling volume.

This is a wonderful Bible. It is very easy on the eyes. The print is big and the format in which it is written makes it very user friendly. I do not have to use my magnifying glass with this one. I love the size because lots of my other Bibles are the same size as this, but the prints are still small. I have quite a few Bibles but I love to read this one the most. I actually purchased a two of these.

The Bible, which is actually a compilation of books packed into one volume is the greatest book ever written and the best selling book of all time. According to The Guinness Book Of World Records, the Bible has been translated into over 1500 languages and over 6 billion copies have been printed. Not only is the Bible an inspiring spiritual guide, but it's also one of the most entertaining books ever written. It has action, adventure, drama, joy, horror, suspense, mystery, prophecy, romance, and history. The Bible is a great self help manual, can help you psychologically, can help end depression, give you self esteem, bring you happiness, inspire you, help you over come trouble, give you wisdom, give you victory, and make you fearless. These and much much more are what the Bible have to offer you. I own several different versions of the Bible, but the King James Version, is one of my favorites. The Bible has changed my life, and it can do the same for you, and, you can also learn how to receive eternal life. Just to give you an idea of some of the writings of the Bible, here are a few examples: 1- Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine. (excerpt from the Song Of Solomon 1:2) 2- A man that bearth false witness against his neighbor is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.(excerpt from Proverbs 25:18) 3- And about the time of forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness. And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot. (excerpt from Acts 13:18,19) 4- But as it is written, eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him (excerpt from First Corinthians 2:9) 5- I Jesus have sent mine Angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, AND the bright and morning star. (excerpt from Revelation 22:16) Want to read a book that could bring a tear to your eye or make you jump for joy, this is the one ! There are, of course different versions of the Bible, many of which are written in a more modern language to help the reader better understand what is written. There are many mysteries in the Bible, so no one can really fully understand all of it, some things are not meant to be understood until later in the future. Still there are other Bibles written to help you better understand much of the text. If one of those bibles is what you would like to study or enjoy, let me recommend those such as published by Tyndale House Publishing, especially The Living Bible. I own 2 copies of The Living Bible. In closing ,let me say that if you want to read a book that is as entertaining as any you would find in a book store, The Bible is an excellent choice.

If you are looking for a small Catholic Bible for yourself or as a gift, this an excellent and affordable choice.
Some of the features:
Words of Christ in red

List of Popes

Introductions to each book

Footnotes and cross-references

List of Christ's parables and miracles in chronological order and where they can be found

The pages are thin, most likely due to the compact size, and the text may be small for some people, 9 pt according to some sources on the Internet. Neither of these are a problem for me, hence the five star rating. They may be a more determining factor if you or the person receiving this Bible have poor vision or would have a problem turning the thin pages.
