THIS BOOK IS ABOUT THE ALL-TIME TIGERS TEAM, POSITION BY POSITION. I REALLY ENJOYED READING ABOUT GREATS LIKE PRINCE HAL, KALINE, GIBSON, GREENBERG, LOLICH, COBB, CASH AND MANY MORE. THERE ARE SOME GREAT PHOTOS AND ALOT OF NOSTALGIA. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FOR THE TRUE BASEBALL FANS WHO REALLY HAVE FOLLOWED BASBALL OVER THE YEARS. THESE TIGERS COVERED IN THIS BOOK EARNED THEIR STRIPES, INDEED. SOME GREAT GREAT MOMENTS RELIVED IN THIS BOOK.

Simply sensational!

Our national pastime is the one constant reminder that everyone kid can grow up to play in the major leagues. I have been a long time Philadelphia Phillies fan and as such seldom read books about other ball clubs. After finishing this book I will have to rethink that policy as the Detroit Tigers are one of the most storied franchises in baseball history.

Starting off with the greatest ballplayer to ever put on spikes, Ty Cobb, the book begins to tell more than a story about the Tigers but also about the fans in Detroit. Men like Charlie Gehringer, Sparky Anderson, Hank Greenberg, and Al Kaline, Alan Trammel ands many others are all in the true baseball fans collector book.

The book had Kirk Gibson in the outfield over the great Harry Heilmann and while I wouldn't have made that choice the writers do make a fairly convincing argument for the selection. I enjoyed the inside look into Al Kaline and his often tumultuous relationship with the people of Detroit.

Finally the book is more that the best Tigers it also includes the near misses, the ones that should be there as well and even the weird and funny characters of the teams. Overall a great book for those interested in the game as well as the "true" Tiger fan.

This is a very good book about all of the great Tiger players. They name their all-time team and have stories about some of their great pitchers. Several of their great managers are also included. McLain, Lolich, Newhouser, and Trout are some of their better-known pitchers.

Thompson Chain NASB - One of the best Bibles out there.
Helpful Votes: 45 out of 45 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-28
This review was originally written shortly after my NASB Thompson Chain purchase. To make it more usable to you, the reader, I updated it with information about the other versions available in a Thompson Chain format. I'd also like to point out that there are two companies that print this Bible, the ones I own are printed by Kirkbride. My suspicion is that the ones printed by Kirkbride are better constructed than the ones produced by that "other comapany."

My Bibles get used every day, so when I decide to replace one it needs to be something that is going to last. After looking at Bibles for three days at various bookstores, I recently bought a Thompson Chain NASB. I love it.

The page layout is very pleasant to the eye and the Bible is printed with a nicely sized print. While I don't agree that the Thompson Chain system is totally free of denominational bias, it is pretty close. If you don't want to use it, it sits unobtrusively off to the side of the page. Chances are though, you'll use it a lot. Other Bibles I've seen give you about one third of each page with some commentators opinion of what he thinks God's word says, which gets kind of annoying.

My first Thompson Chain was a NIV with bonded leather. I bought it in 1985 and it's still holding up. This one is the genuine leather and should hold up just as well. I've seen other reviews where people complain about shoddy workmanship, cheap paper or the fact that its printed offshore. My 1985 version was printed in Canada (not US) has similarly thin paper, and has held up just fine. I think that this one will also. Another word about the paper: the paper in this version has a nice, silky feel to it.

I also have the NIV version ISBN 088707166X, KJV, and the NKJV all of which I have purchased in the last six months. The NIV version is thinner and easier to carry due to the print being smaller, and the fact that the NIV contains less textual notes. The helps in the back of the Bible are the same, but the concordance in the NIV is better than the concordance is the NASB. Surprisingly, my new Thompson Chain NIV is printed in the USA.

The NKJV is the heaviest of the Thompson Chain Bibles. It has over 2400 pages. It is printed in the US. The print size is a little larger than average, which makes it easier to read than some.

The KJV version is the thinnest of the versions available from Thompson. It has 1923 pages. Mine was printed in the US. The concordance is better than that found in the NIV, and NKJV versions. There are no textual notes in this version. In other words, there is nothing to alert you that different manuscripts don't contain the longer ending in Mark, all of 1 John 5:7, or Acts 8:37. The paper in my Thompson KJV was different than that found in the NIV, NASB, NKJV. It was not as smooth. The type size is smaller than that found in the NKJV, and NASB versions.

Make no mistake, this is a big, heavy Bible. If you are looking for something less massive, and don't mind giving up a few "helps" consider the "New American Standard Ultrathin Reference Bible; Black Genuine Leather" also available through Amazon.

Like I stated earlier, I compared Bibles for 3 days and ended up going back with a Thompson. The only other Bibles in the same league are the old version Scofield (not availible in NASB), and the Open Bible (which I also have). The only things that I would like to see improved are the concordance, and the introduction/background information for each book of the Bible. If you like the NASB your choices are somewhat limited when looking for a serious study Bible. Chances are, in the NASB the Thompson Chain is your best bet.

This bible is a super bible because it makes finding the scriptures you need easy. The "treasure hunts" are neat because you can go to the back of the book and look up a subject that you are interested in and the references send you from scripture to scripture on that subject.

I've been reading Mark Twain for thirty years and always enjoy his sharp, acerbic wit and profound observations. The Unabridged Mark Twain is a collection of some of his best stories and essays dealing with life on the Mississippi River, travels, political commentary and general good fiction. I think one of the hallmarks of a good author is that their writings become timeless and issues pertinent then can be found today. Highly recommended reading.

Samuel Clemens is one of the greatest American writers ever, and this collection contains most of his best work. It is better than volume II of the collection. I am working my way through the book again for the third time in 15 years. It is worth every penny you will pay for it.

Best Twain compendium I know of

Review Date: 2004-12-03
If you're here because you haven't read Mark Twain's novels and are considering it, then buy this or whatever you can find, and read it. That's probably not the case though, so I'll review this volume.

This is essentially like most of the inexpensive but nice-looking collections of old literature that you see in book stores, with the leatherette covers and super shiny gilt page edges. Not super impressive, but looks good on the bookshelf.

The best part about this volume is that it contains the vast majority of Twain's works that most people would want to read, including Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, The Innocents Abroad, The Prince and the Pauper, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. It also includes some classic short pieces, like The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses. In total, there is relatively little chaff in here. There is a second volume to go with this one, but it is nowhere near as good.

If you want a good Twain collection to put on the bookshelf, I recommend this one.

Although this book was a gift, I know that the readers of Louis L'Amour enjoy "westerns". While the stories are not always too long, they are easily and quickly read. Especially good if you are trying to get your sons or husbands to read.

Vintage L'Amour - 'Sweet water' is sweet reading
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-01
Has Louis L'Amour ever written a bad book? If so, I have never read one, and in fact this is one of his best. The setting is deep in Indian country - 200 miles west of Fort Laramie and right from the start the master of the western genre has your concentration as much as a wagon master going through hostile territory. In fact that's how the story starts with a grisly massacre of a wagon train party. The slaughter, however, was not the work of Indians but rather a vicious bunch of owlhoots who have made off with a missing wagon, a fortune in gold and the daughter of Major Devereaux. The wild card is Lt. Tenadore Brian, who is riding with the missing wagon against orders. In the hands of the master story teller those few ingredients are enough to weave a engrossing drama of the Old West that makes the reader keep going as relentlessly as Major Devereaux's career in the cavalry or with the determination of Lt.Brian to get the crooks - and the girl. For fans of L'Amour, and westerns in general, 'Under the Sweetwater Rim' is indeed sweet reading.

I bought this scrapbook, elsewhere and paid more, but it's fantastic! I designed this gift to give to my husband for his last birthday. I contacted an old ship-mate (USS GRANT) and received photos, anecdotes, etc. to place in the album. It came out great and the album just helped to enhance the whole "picture!"
I highly recommend this album for your Navy scrapbooking. There are so many stickers and embellishments out now, it's so easy to commemorate those Navy experiences!

Few books really move me to look at who I am and how I live my life, but this book does just that almost every page.

The Best KJV Wide Margin
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-01
This Oxford is simply the best available wide margin Bible in the King James Version. The calfskin leather is thick and sturdy enough to support the weight of the book, yet still flexible. The paper is the best I know of among wide margin Bibles. It is thick, so there's no bleedthrough from writing notes. It is also non-glare, so it's easy on the eyes. The print is neither small nor large. The margins are quite wide and continue around the entirety of the text. I really like the fact that there are about 25 pages of lined paper bound in the back of the Bible right after the maps. In addition, there are several blank note pages right before the maps, so between the lined and unlined pages, there is plenty of room to use for notes in the back of the Bible. The only "negatives" about this Bible might be it's size (it is relatively large and somewhat heavy, but still quite portable. No larger, really, than a full-size study Bible), and also there is no concordance (this is not a drawback to me, but might be to others. I'd much rather have the thicker paper and the extra blank pages in the back than a concordance). The Bible does have center-column references and a nice selection of maps. The Binding is extremely well done by today's standards. This is a Bible that's made to use and made to last.

A Terrific Bible!

This "Oxford Wide Margin Authorized Version Bible" (W1794syx) has been my working Bible for study/teaching for almost 20 years now. I originally bought it because it was the only King James Version I could find that had the generous wide margins (even in the center) to allow for writing notes all around the text. You may ask, "Why all the new translations, then?" Well, again, I could be wrong here, but it seems to me that the driving force behind the flood of all these new versions constantly coming out isn't so much a desire for more accuracy or readability (since there are already enough usable translations available to the public NOW to last us till kingdom come) as it is for the much more popular reason which I refer to as the "GOG" (Good Old-fashioned Greed) factor. Although you can still find the KJV offered by other companies, Oxford and Cambridge remain the two publishing houses still vigorously committed to offering a variety of quality, leather-bound KJV Bibles, as they provided the majority of scholars to originally translate (and later, publish) the AV some 400 years ago. Incidentally, I have recently purchased the "Cambridge Cameo Wide Margin KJV" (KWMC257), and like it immensely. Like the Oxford, it is also Smyth-sewn, the best (and most expensive) method available. I actually find the Cambridge edition to be perhaps a tad superior, mainly due to its pronunciation markings, fine concordance, and complete original preface from the Translators to the Reader, all of which are lacking in the Oxford edition. This Oxford, however does have the useful verse outlines at the beginning of each chapter, as well as superior (in my estimation) marginal references. I have a Morocco leather and Calfskin leather in Oxford (as well as a Berkshire--pigskin--leather, and Calfskin leather in the Cambridge) either of which are essentially comparable in quality, and which also make the Oxford (and Cambridge) the nicest KJV Wide-Margin Bible(s) you can buy today, and which, with proper care, should give decades of use.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why the subtitle to this book is "Wise Words for Busy People" because this book can and does apply to everyone. This is the first of Swindoll's books I've read. He provides some very interesting and thought-provoking comments on life in general and the involvement that God should have in all aspects of one's life. The book was a St. Valentine's Day gift from my wife, and a good gift it was. Swindolls' words of wisdom, combined with selected verses of Scripture, make "Wisdom for the Way" a wonderful addition to one's inspirational library. Reading this selection will very much make me seek out more of Swindoll's books. Thanks!
