I am extremely saddened to see it disappear from shelves out of print. I am instead seeing it replaced by NIV versions which have a number of difficulties. It is my prayer that the publisher does not discontinue this age old classic in such a perfect format for the modern day.

but Cambridge puts out a quality of print, paper and leather covers that defies comparison. This little gem is supple, portable, elegant and durable. The addition of the Psalms to the New Testament makes it very special for daily use.

A Hard Luck UnitReview Date: 2003-07-11
The detail of life listed by the soldiers' shows through in this work and the author does an excellent job weaving Official Records with personal accounts. His report of Antietam is quite interesting and enjoyable to read in that I've traversed that battlefield more than many others. I'll certainly have a new appreciation for the terrain in the areas hard fought by the cavalry units. Corporal James P Stewart's account about the dead and dying really brings out the horror of the day. His longing to see the field of battle and then describing the fresh burials; (if a few shovels of dirt can actually be described as burial), and the subsequent look as if the fields had been plowed had a very striking impact in his life. Men and wheat became one and they fell where they once marched and looked as if they themselves were fields of wheat just harvested by death himself.
The work is well written and gives the reader a wonderful trip into the life of a hard luck cavalry unit. Mr. Mairer did his homework and has put forth some great effort in researching this subject matter and it show through in every page. Cover to cover the reader will find that human interest has been successfully merged with historical research. This work reads well, was hard to put down, and did not drag on into over exacting details. I highly recommend this book to anyone curious about cavalry operations during the Civil War.
"Leather and Steel"Review Date: 2002-11-02
One can understand better the ability of the 12th. to perform their duty when you see how the political backstabbing and inability of those in command to train and lead their men. One also gets a better understanding of the mindset of these men when you are faced with occupying the enemies' territory and are threatened with bushwhackers that can attack at any time and anywhere. Unlike the men in the Army of the Potomac who in large armies faced the enemy in most cases, known to all the men, the 12th. lived with the fear of being attacked 24-7 occupying enemy territory through out almost their entire service.
The diary excerpts of Sergeant Henry B. Petrikin give you the sense and insight of how these men felt about daily life in the 12th. Pennsylvania Cavalry.
I want to repeat the words of the Author Larry B. Maier.
"The Regiment was given
only a small, but necessary, role in the Civil War. To a great extent the Hussars performed their parts with courage and patriotism,
and although they never attained glory, they are certainly deserving of our respect."
I want to thank Larry B. Maier for his love of this subject and his dedication and tireless effort in putting this regimental history together.

Love amidst the killing fieldsReview Date: 2008-04-18
Marco Abraham did not write a non-fiction book about the continuing conflict between the Palestinians and Israelis; instead he retells and relives this painful massacre on September 16, 1982, a date that is best buried, but should never be forgotten. Lost Blood takes the readers to the unstable political unrest in the Middle East. It is a dark historical time in which hate, genocide, and evil battle and sometimes trupimph over love, humanity, and faith. Amidst the killing fields of Sabra and Shatila, a beautiful angel lives and love is born. Abraham intimately shares this private love so tenderly; the reader temporarily escapes, "hell on earth".
Unapologetically, Abraham violently forces the readers to face each victim. He is the tortured elderly man who dies defending his honor. He is the screaming woman whose unborn child aborts her womb. He is the innocent child who suffers the unspeakable rape. He is the young man who comforts his mother with his last dying breath. He is the angle who prays that her love will survive. He is Marco Abraham, a survivor. These are innocent victims, not merely characters in a book. Lost Blood challenges the readers to see the suffering, hear the cries of injustice, feel the hands of evilness, taste the bittersweet fruit of love, and ultimately touch death by the thousands.
Lost Blood evokes so many emotions from its readers; it takes courage to finish this story. Abraham is ruthless in his quest to remind the readers that indifference or even ignorance may, will, and did result in a massacre. The atrocity of Sabra and Shatila so painfully and powerfully vivid with Abraham's words transcend age, gender, race, and religion. It calls for all Jews, Christians, and Muslims to learn from the past and move forward with peace. Lost Blood must be told. It is told through the voice of Marco Abraham. Read Lost Blood and you can never remain voiceless; be their voice.

To spare some confusion: MacArthur has 2 similar Large Print EditionsReview Date: 2008-02-22
Physically the book is large: it has the same height and width of my edition of Young's Analytical Concordance, or about 3" wider than Ryrie's Study Bible, only not as thick. It seems to weigh about the same as Ryrie too. It is indexed which is a plus. It does not appear to be a sewn binding.
The bible font is large (13 point) but not as large as a Lockman Foundation Side Column Reference NASB. The notes are probably about 11 point. It has center column references about 11 point font also. In other words, it's a readable bible but don't expect giant print.
Dr. MacArthur's book introductions and study notes are excellent: he clearly knows and loves the Word. This bible is absolutely jam-packed with information. In fact, sometimes the notes explaining the text tend to fill an entire page by themselves. The notes are comprised of primarily doctrinal and translational content rather than devotional meditations (I personally bought a Charles F. Stanley Life Principles Large Print for devotional reading ISBN-10: 0718014626, sold here at reasonable cost on Amazon.)
When I am seriously immersing myself in study, I like MacArthur along with me - no question about it. Highly Recommended!

A Gold Mine of Christian ThoughtReview Date: 1999-12-21
Farrell does an outstanding job of translating St. Thomas' Summa into language non-scholars can comprehend. In doing so, we find that St. Thomas was more than one of the great minds of his, or any, age. He was also a most profoundly spiritual person.
Each paragraph of My Way of Life is a rich vein of ore, needing to be mined patiently. Through reflection and meditation on the simple truths contained, the mature Christian will grow toward a closer, deeper experience of faith.
Intellectually thought provoking! A must read!Review Date: 1999-10-12
I found it to be one of the best works I have ever read -- regardless of subject matter. So thoroughly enjoyable that I never wanted to set it down. So in depth that I had to set it down and think about what I had read.
This book is one that I highly recommend to all dedicated readers.

My Favorite Bible of All : Absolutely FlawlessReview Date: 2007-10-22
The best thing about this Bible is the referencing - this is done in many ways that are too exhaustive to list here. However, note this : how often have you wondered, what does THAT chapter in the Bible mean? Well, every chapter, every verse here is preceded by a succinct synopsis of what the upcoming text is all about. Believe me, this is VERY well done. I don't think there are too many actual Biblical scholars out there who could recollect every bit of meaning in the Bible, and its great that Nelsons has given this gift to us mere mortals.
What I also found especially wonderful was the durable presentation. The leather-bound book has pages that are edged with gold, giving it a very classy look. I have carried my Bible with me everywhere, and read it so many times, and the pages are still as fresh as ever, and the whole book has that noble, sturdy look a proper religious text should. Call me old fashioned, but its this sort of dependable consistency that a serious reader enjoys.
If you're planning on buying a Bible for yourself or gifting one to somebody, this is the best one out there. Whether for light reading or for serious spiritual discourse, this Reference Bible is above and beyond a regular edition of the Bible, and as it stands, the most essential Bible in the market today.

Great reference bible. My NEW keeper for daily bible study.Review Date: 2006-01-11
The book introductions are brief and basic. It gives you just enough background information without a lot opinion or commentary...this is great.
It has a How to Use this Reference Bible section in the front. This is helpful for those who may be a beginner or someone who has never used a center-column reference system before. Also, it only has 1 page presentation page which is very basic.
One feature that is really nice (for me at least) is the Capital and Small Capital Letter text. For example, in the New Testament, if an author quotes scripture from the Old Testament, the quoted scripture/text stands out with Capital and Small capital letters.
I almost forgot one of the main reasons I bought this bible was the In Text/Subject Headings. Most bibles have the top page headings which help but typical there are other stories/subjects on the same page. These In Text/Subject Headings are very helpful for beginners such as my 11 yr old son. We both have this bible. He is pretty familiar with stories but not quite sure where to find a story in a specific book. At least with the In Text/Subject Headings, he can flip thru the book and see the title/heading for a specific group of scriptures. Also, the In Text/Subject Headings will list the parallel/associated scripture in another book. The parallel scriptures are throughout the Bible but are very common in the Gospels. For example, Matthew 22:15 has a heading "Conflict with Pharisees and Herodians". The parallel scriptures listed below this heading are Mark 12:13-17 & Luke 20:20-26. This is a great feature where you do need Harmony of the Gospels in the back of the bible.
The 68 page concordance is pretty decent. I'm not disappointed considering you have to give or take when it comes to concordances. Depending on the size of your bible or if it's an actual study bible will kind of dictate what to expect from the concordance. The full color maps are really nice.
For the price of this bible (depending on where you get it from), you can't beat it. I am so happy to finally have a large volume of cross-references, subject headings (big plus for me)and the capital letter quotes. Plus, the size is really nice since I typically carry compact reference bibles in my purse. This bible measures 8 3/4 x 5 5/8 x 1 1/4. Therefore, you need to look for a cover that is possibly labeled small or medium.

Good Bible for those boring sermons :)Review Date: 2008-02-14
What I really like about his Bible is the devotionals for those times when the pastor's sermon is just too long or too boring. At those times, which, hopefully, aren't too many, it's nice to have short, interesting articles to read to stimulate your thinking.
Thanks, Zondervan.
