A handy pocket edition of the much loved Douay RheimsReview Date: 2008-08-29
The Bible has been redone from a late 19th century printing. Same pagination, but the type is so clear & crisp. Good quality paper, that you aren't reading both sides of the paper at once, because somebody tried to save money on paper.
A point to bear in mind is that in this edition, the text size is a bit on the small size - fine if your eyesight is ok, but if not, you'll need the larger edition. I use this one to carry around, and the larger one for use at home.
Beautiful, high quality pocket Catholic BibleReview Date: 2007-10-03
I finally found a complete Catholic pocket-sized Bible after many years of searching. Baronius Press has produced an excellent quality and durably bound portable Bible in this edition. The print is small but that is to be expected in any Bible of this size. The binding is sturdy, stitched, not glued, and I have carried mine in my purse and used it daily and it's holding up well. The Douay Rheims translation, though not as modern as the New American Bible, is not difficult to understand and the notes are solidly orthodox and reliable, with no agenda as one sometimes finds in more recent biblical scholarship. This is overall a very fine quality Bible with a reliable translation, useful notes, durable leather stitched binding, high quality pages, all of the biblical encyclicals, and a perfect size for carrying in a purse or pocket. It is well worth the price and Baronius Press is the best publisher of Catholic bibles. Their quality far surpasses that of any other publisher due to their impressive attention to detail. For anyone looking for a small but complete (Old Testament, including the deutero-canonical books, and New Testament) Catholic Bible in a beautiful, solid translation that is a pleasure to read and/or study, I highly recommend this Bible. I give it an A+!
Nearly Perfect as Pocket Catholic Bibles goReview Date: 2007-04-07
I do have a few minor complaints. The leather cover is stiff. The Bible would be easier to read and carry if it were soft leather covered. The 1899 text is good and solid, but the 1938 D-R Bible published by Douay Bible House in New York is better. And remember, it's a pocket Bible, so the print runs small!

A nice little time capsule of the periodReview Date: 2007-05-17
It is cold and unsentimental. Very Victorian in its writing and very very real in its view. Absolutely unflinching in its view.
I got this novel to give me insights into the period. I found more than I was looking for and am very very well pleased as will anybody who cares to sit down and read this delightful novel.
Good look for the student of history interested in Victorian England. A joy for anyone interested in the life of women. And a very good moral novel that anyone will enjoy reading.
First major English realist novelReview Date: 1998-12-09
Of the three, Esther Waters is the most fully developed and it is certainly the most engaging for a modern reader. In it, a woman has a child out of wedlock, and not only survives (through a variety of trials that are dispassionately but unflinchingly depicted) but in a manner of speaking prospers (Compare this for example with Elizabeth Gaskell's *Ruth*, written some 40+ years earlier).
A great read. An important milestone in the transition from moralism to realism in English fiction. An Irish writer who played an important role in the Irish literary renaissance in the early years of the 19th century.
Well worth the read.
An unflinching survey of poverty and survivalReview Date: 2004-07-16
The Victorian writing requires careful reading. The paragraph where Esther has premarital sex is so opaque that it’s uncertain what exactly happened until later when the pregnancy is revealed. And certainly the word ‘pregnancy’ isn’t used (“Yes Ma’am, I’m 7 months gone”).
Finally a pet peeve about phonetically spelling dialects. Reading dialogue like " ‘e went ‘ome to see ‘is wife, but she locked ‘im out o’ the ‘ouse. " gets mighty tiresome.

A Pocket Knife to Carry with You EverywhereReview Date: 2008-08-09
In recent years, the practice of producing handy New Testaments seems to have been on the decline. A number of Book Sellers opine that the cost is prohibitive and that since whole Bibles are so readily available in so many styles and formats at such a low cost, it isn't worth it to the publisher to set up for just a small, low-cost NT. Those who believe the Bible to be the Word of God and the instrument of our salvation have long found great use for a handy version of the NT as the greatest of aids in the proclamation, defense and discussion of God's Word.
The ESV version is an endearing (and may I predict, an enduring...) translation that makes plain what is most precious, without the compromises that so often beleagure modern translations. The binding, font and readily accessible features of this NT edition are an outstanding addition to a growing and helpful series of ESV editions that bring God's Eternal Word to a new century, whose need has never been greater.

A Practical Women's DevotionalReview Date: 2001-06-11
I have purchased several copies of this devotional to give to friends. Clayton nonthreateningly has short, practical devotions to assist women in all walks of life to pursue not an outward beauty, but an inward beauty of a "gentle and quiet spirit." I highly recommend this devotional to women of all ages. Whenever anyone asks for my recommendation for a good women's devotional, A Gentle Spirit is always my first recommendation!

This certainly is a most worthwhile addition to anyone's library. In fact, by the time I got to the fourth story, SMEE by A. M. Burrage, I promptly ordered a second copy for my brother! It's an excellent volume to own. You won't be disappointed. Ghosts: A Treasury of Chilling Tales Old and New (Contemporary Bonded Leather Fibers Series)

Common Sense that isn't CommonReview Date: 2004-06-08
The book is tiny. It really is about five or six inches tall, about six or seven inches wide and maybe 1.5 or 2 inches thick. So it's portable! Not a bad buy at all.
