These books are a wonderful guide to how this life relates to the next and how God directs all life. They answer questions about why bad things happen, the purpose of life, and order in the universe, in a philosophical way that is practical and easy to understand. If you are looking for something deeper than scientific answers, I highly recommend Divine Love and Wisdom and Divine Providence!

The first time I read this boook was in a college course. It was a good text for a class, being straightforward but also sparking many entertaining and intricate discussions. Now that I am done the class, Divine Love and Wisdom is a wonderful book to pick up and read whenever. It desribes the Sun of heaven and the relationship between this world and the next. For solid and simple to understand ideas about God and His nature and the effects the spiritual world has on the natural and vice versa, this is a versatile and thought-porvoking book that I highly recommend!

This work is essential reading for anyone seeking clear, sensible answers about the nature of God, and the relationship between the heavens and the earth (or the spiritual world and the natural world). I read this in college many years ago, and return to it frequently. It just makes so much sense.

A handy pocket edition of the much loved Douay Rheims

This edition of the Bible is one of my favorites. Such a beautiful Text. It is very different to other bibles, and I think it makes things a lot more clearer.
The Bible has been redone from a late 19th century printing. Same pagination, but the type is so clear & crisp. Good quality paper, that you aren't reading both sides of the paper at once, because somebody tried to save money on paper.
A point to bear in mind is that in this edition, the text size is a bit on the small size - fine if your eyesight is ok, but if not, you'll need the larger edition. I use this one to carry around, and the larger one for use at home.

Beautiful, high quality pocket Catholic Bible

I finally found a complete Catholic pocket-sized Bible after many years of searching. Baronius Press has produced an excellent quality and durably bound portable Bible in this edition. The print is small but that is to be expected in any Bible of this size. The binding is sturdy, stitched, not glued, and I have carried mine in my purse and used it daily and it's holding up well. The Douay Rheims translation, though not as modern as the New American Bible, is not difficult to understand and the notes are solidly orthodox and reliable, with no agenda as one sometimes finds in more recent biblical scholarship. This is overall a very fine quality Bible with a reliable translation, useful notes, durable leather stitched binding, high quality pages, all of the biblical encyclicals, and a perfect size for carrying in a purse or pocket. It is well worth the price and Baronius Press is the best publisher of Catholic bibles. Their quality far surpasses that of any other publisher due to their impressive attention to detail. For anyone looking for a small but complete (Old Testament, including the deutero-canonical books, and New Testament) Catholic Bible in a beautiful, solid translation that is a pleasure to read and/or study, I highly recommend this Bible. I give it an A+!

Nearly Perfect as Pocket Catholic Bibles go

This is easily the most beautiful pocket Catholic Bible you'll find anywhere anytime soon. Baronius Press always does a great job in printing and binding. The biblical text is that of the 1899 Cardinal Gibbons Douay-Rheims Bible. The Bible contains the encyclicals "Providentissimus Deus" and "Spiritus Paraclitus" and "Divino Afflante Spiritu" which are wonderful to read for their depth of understanding regarding Sacred Scripture and the proper way to read and understand it.

I do have a few minor complaints. The leather cover is stiff. The Bible would be easier to read and carry if it were soft leather covered. The 1899 text is good and solid, but the 1938 D-R Bible published by Douay Bible House in New York is better. And remember, it's a pocket Bible, so the print runs small!

A nice little time capsule of the period

A nice insightful look into the life of a working class umarried mother of the late victorian period who copes with her misfortune of falling in with the WRONG PERSON and struggles to rise from the situation towards her self redemption. Everyone can identify with this main character.

It is cold and unsentimental. Very Victorian in its writing and very very real in its view. Absolutely unflinching in its view.

I got this novel to give me insights into the period. I found more than I was looking for and am very very well pleased as will anybody who cares to sit down and read this delightful novel.

Good look for the student of history interested in Victorian England. A joy for anyone interested in the life of women. And a very good moral novel that anyone will enjoy reading.

First major English realist novel

Review Date: 1998-12-09
George Moore was an Irish landowner who received his indoctrination into the world of art and literature in France. His encounter there with the realist movement led to the first three truly realistic (defined as against the prevailing moralism and/or melodrama of Victorian fiction) novels in English literature proper: A Modern Lover, A Mummer's Wife and Esther Waters.

Of the three, Esther Waters is the most fully developed and it is certainly the most engaging for a modern reader. In it, a woman has a child out of wedlock, and not only survives (through a variety of trials that are dispassionately but unflinchingly depicted) but in a manner of speaking prospers (Compare this for example with Elizabeth Gaskell's *Ruth*, written some 40+ years earlier).

A great read. An important milestone in the transition from moralism to realism in English fiction. An Irish writer who played an important role in the Irish literary renaissance in the early years of the 19th century.

Well worth the read.

An unflinching survey of poverty and survival
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-16
An unsentimental (nearly unemotional) survey of poverty’s crushing dehumanization. Born impoverished, the title character is nonetheless raised with a carefully defined sense of morality and self-respect. This is wrung out of her over years of economic exploitation and casual sadism by the moneyed class. By the end of the novel she’s accepting the most degrading misfortune as almost a birthright.

The Victorian writing requires careful reading. The paragraph where Esther has premarital sex is so opaque that it’s uncertain what exactly happened until later when the pregnancy is revealed. And certainly the word ‘pregnancy’ isn’t used (“Yes Ma’am, I’m 7 months gone”).

Finally a pet peeve about phonetically spelling dialects. Reading dialogue like " ‘e went ‘ome to see ‘is wife, but she locked ‘im out o’ the ‘ouse. " gets mighty tiresome.

ESV Bible, Classic Pocket New Testament Psalms and Proverbs Edition (TruTone, Black, No Design, Red Letter)

In recent years, the practice of producing handy New Testaments seems to have been on the decline. A number of Book Sellers opine that the cost is prohibitive and that since whole Bibles are so readily available in so many styles and formats at such a low cost, it isn't worth it to the publisher to set up for just a small, low-cost NT. Those who believe the Bible to be the Word of God and the instrument of our salvation have long found great use for a handy version of the NT as the greatest of aids in the proclamation, defense and discussion of God's Word.
The ESV version is an endearing (and may I predict, an enduring...) translation that makes plain what is most precious, without the compromises that so often beleagure modern translations. The binding, font and readily accessible features of this NT edition are an outstanding addition to a growing and helpful series of ESV editions that bring God's Eternal Word to a new century, whose need has never been greater.

I seem to have collected quite the assortment of devotionals and of the many that I have this one is consistently my favorite. As a christian with a Baptist upbringing who now attends Calvary Chapel I find that this particular devotional always gives me something new to remember to praise God for or ask for Him to create in me so that I can be a better servant to Him. With so many different submissions from christian greats like Elisabeth Elliot and Ruth Bell Graham and Corrie ten Boom there is always some feast of wisdom within these pages.

I am constantly using devotionals to enhance my study of the Scripture and to enhance my relationship with the Lord and with those with whom I interact. Ashley Clayton has done in this devotional what no other writer has been able to do: use illustrations and incidents that are applicable to daily life for women while, at the same time, providing plenty of "spiritual meat" to really grow and develop spiritually.

I have purchased several copies of this devotional to give to friends. Clayton nonthreateningly has short, practical devotions to assist women in all walks of life to pursue not an outward beauty, but an inward beauty of a "gentle and quiet spirit." I highly recommend this devotional to women of all ages. Whenever anyone asks for my recommendation for a good women's devotional, A Gentle Spirit is always my first recommendation!

What a delightful anthology of ghostly tales! I was especially impressed with the embossed leather binding of this edition (mine is black and gold with a ghost and tombstone on the front and spine!), gilded pages, and the sewn in ribbon bookmark. Each story has an introduction regarding the author and interesting thoughts about the story. It's a treat to savor each offering, whether during seemingly calm daylight hours or a stormy dark night by candlelight!

This certainly is a most worthwhile addition to anyone's library. In fact, by the time I got to the fourth story, SMEE by A. M. Burrage, I promptly ordered a second copy for my brother! It's an excellent volume to own. You won't be disappointed. Ghosts: A Treasury of Chilling Tales Old and New (Contemporary Bonded Leather Fibers Series)

I am a big fan of ghost stories, so when I saw this book in the local bookstore I was immediatley attracted to it. I got the book for Christmas and started reading it immediatley. So if you know someone of any age who loves ghost stories, this would be one of the best ghost story books you could get for them.

I have had this book for 20 years, and I always go back to it to read my favorite stories. This is a collection of old, classic, better known stories and more modern ones you might not have heard of before. There is a section on ghost hunting, and a list by state of the "most haunted" houses. A nice collection of spooky stuff if you like ghost stories.

The simplicity of this book is amazing. They say so much with so few words and it is all inspired by the Word of God. It is filled with the practical application of the Word, and I constantly find myself going back to it for reference. At the end of each chapter, there is a section of specific bullets on how you can practically apply all that was talked about in that section.

The book is tiny. It really is about five or six inches tall, about six or seven inches wide and maybe 1.5 or 2 inches thick. So it's portable! Not a bad buy at all.

This book has answered so many of my questions as I search for a clear way to be a Christian in today's world, as a young adult. The chapters like "Arrange Your Priorities" and "Contentment Is Good for the Soul" are arranged in easy to read passages, with great biblical quotes and little suggestions on how to be a better Christian. Some suggestions are easy and will help you right away, some are definitely things to work on and keep in mind for the long haul. I found myself nodding with every passage though- it's so right on! A definite recommend to everyone!

A touch of todays language somehow gets the point across a little more....and sometimes paints a better picture. I am a youth pastor and use it not only for my lessons (in addition to my NIV) but find that I like to read it for my own personal growth as well. It is a very appropriate and close translation. I bought a load for my youth group. I wish there was more of this translation around and still on the shelf.

This is a Bible written with youthful readers in mind. It is written in modern English and in paragraph form that kids are used to. It helps them to put their religious beliefs into action. There is an index that allows the kids to look up topics of interest (ie. dating, drinking, popularity) and to find out what the Word of God has to say about it.

The first thing a teenager sees when they look at a Bible is how long and boring it is. Actually, that is not true. I once thought the same thing until I bought the God's Word for Students Bible. This book inspires a close relationship with God by including 365 devotionals (one for everyday of the year). When I got the Bible and began to do the devotions, I found myself trusting Jesus more and more. Reading His word is a key to a successful walk with Him.

The translation is also extremely easy to read and is written clearly, so you arent' overwelmed by the looks of it. It is a "must-have" for any on-fire-for-God teen.

Michael Hansen SJ in his book "The Gospels for Prayer" has freed the Gospel texts. I didn't realise just how much was packed into so few pages until I began to pray with my copy of "The Gospels for Prayer". I didn't realise just how most printed versions of the Gospels are cluttered and filled with helpful notes for study etc. But what if you want to just pray with them? For years I have struggled in my prayer to find and keep my place in the Gospels whilst I pray. But now, when I pick up my copy of "The Gospels for Prayer" I know that I have already begun to pray. Each page sets free the text for prayer. Uncluttered, clear and simple. This book is incredible. Such a simple idea, yet profound. I can't thank Michael enough for his innovative and Spirit filled book. Brilliant!

Michael Hansen has produced an aesthetically beautiful book on how to pray with the Gospels. If you are used to reading or trying to pray with a standard bible or new testament chances are you will have lots of footnotes and comments and the text condensed into small columns on each page. Michael has produced the Gospels with the major passage from each section of the four Gospels on one page at a time, with no footnotes and not comments. It is a book that is designed to allow you to pray and enter more deeply your relationship with Jesus without distraction. Michael has also an excellent introduction outlining different ways of praying that can help you to use this book more effectively. It is a beautiful book that I cannot recomment highly enough.

This is a very well-written book with abundant good humor and dry wit. It is one of the classics of grouse hunting literature. It is not a natural history or a how-to book, but is literature written in a very accessible style about one man's adventures while hunting grouse over a period of many years near his New England home.

I am 44 years old. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and so did my 80-year old Uncle who had hunted ruffed grouse for many years in the woods of northeastern Pennsylvania.
