I am finding this a real relaxing way to read the bible, for the first time. Each day after arising I read that day, which is an effortless way to read the bible. It is easy to understand in its' New Living Translation, and I think the way most people reading the bible would like to do it.

This terrific NLT is organized so that you get some of everything each day of the year - part Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament), part Greek Scriptures (New Testament), part Psalms, and a verse or two from Proverbs. It is not randomly organized - the reading from the Hebrew Scriptures is set up thoughtfully so that over the course of a few days you read about an event until you finish that story, and only then do you start on another. I'm used to the New World Translation, which is one of the most accurate around, and I find the NLT to be, in most instances, a pure joy to read. I find that this Bible helped me get my daily Bible reading back on track easily. Plus, this edition looks fabulous. All in all, buy one!

A great way to read the Bible through

I have an earlier version of the same and have just about worn it out. It's a great way to read through the Bible and while doing so, savor the beautiful way both old and new testaments blend. I love it so much, I bought this book as a gift to give to my dad for his 75th birthday and he loves it!

There is no better way to get a good understanding of the Bible then through reading through it. The One Year Bible eliminates the guilt and the sense of failiure when a day is missed. Jn McArthur is a very prectical commentator so this is a great investment that will continue to pay off provided it is used.

Blessed to find a recent version.

Received a bible from friends of mine about 9 years ago, and it was falling apart due to the harsh temperatures I subject the Bible in my car. I was very, very happy to have found a newer version (larger text) of an incredible everyday tool for worship and meditation! AMEN ... PRAISE GOD!

I actually bought this large-print Bible for my Mother. I have the smaller version and just love it! I had been wanting to start reading the Bible, but was very intimidated. This is set up in a way that you read from four different books of the Bible in one reading, for about 15 minutes a day. Very smart setup. I am almost halfway through now and I never thought I'd be able to say that!

This little book of Bible references is the best I've come across in my Christian walk of 25+ years. I can't say enough good things about it. I bought a copy in 1993, reading it regularly. Then in 2000 when a cousin of mine was experiencing great sadness over the lost of his mother-in-law, mother, wife and two children within a decade, I mailed it to him hoping he would read it and find solace and comfort. Apparently, it was allowed to catch cobweb, so I asked him to return it which he did today (8/22/07). Now I have my precious little book again. I'm in total agreement with my fellow posters who are asking that the publishers print more copies pronto! This book is one of the best gifts with which one can bless another. I love GOD.

A decade of M/s knowledge in one book

Both books Master/slave Relations: Handbook of Theory and Practice and
Protocol Handbook for the Leather Slave: Theory and Practice by Robert J. Rubel, PhD
Cover the same subject with a slightly different focus.

It amazes me that knowledge that took me years to learn is now available in 7 easy steps. The book can accelerate your journey into BDSM by a decade.

Protocol Handbook for the Leather Slave: Theory and Practice is exactly what it says it is. Although there is no one "right" way to practice consensual slavery, this book gets novices off to a successful start and provides additional sections, such as the slave as Personal Assistant, for seasoned Leatherfolk. Fascinating read!

The Questions and Tone of Ms Relationships

Review Date: 2006-12-12
Drawing heavily on his own Ms life, Rubel offers us more than mere protocols in this book. First he describes general differences between two large parts of the SM community -- Leather and BDSM (think het or poly) -- and how these groups may differ on public issues. Secondly he offers us honest and realitistic questions that we should ask if we think we want to do Ms on more than a casual or fun basis. It is not for everyone and very few people can have successful, long-term Ms relationships. Do not buy this book with the idea that you can just start applying his own rules, rituals, and concepts to your own life (you are likely to fail) but as a way to get you and anyone you may partner with thinking about very important questions.

This is a book about the Leather subculture

Review Date: 2006-12-05
This book appears to be a revised version of Rubel's book on protocols for the female slave. This version is gender-neutral and is a smoother read. Since I liked the first book so well, I've gone through this one, too. I prefer this one, actually.

This unusual book describes a male or female slave's expected behavior within a consensual Leather Master/slave relationship. I've never seen this described before. I've read novels about it (such as the Marketplace series) but not a non-fiction book.

To my knowledge, there is no other book out there like this one. After a healthy orientation to the world of Leather, the book divides into two main parts: how the slave is to behave in public Leather events and how the slave is to prepare the evening for a formal High Leather Protocol dinner.

I found this book interesting because often, particularly in new Master/slave relations, the slave is unsure what to do to serve the Master and the Master is unsure how he wants to be served. This book seems designed to help in those situations.

The author certainly has a firm point of view. This book has documented the formal structure of a Leather relationship as he has found it to be. I also sense that the author is a little eccentric. Well, his described relationship is certainly an unusual one. You will do well to think of this book as a Leather Etiquette book. If you're not familiar with the Leather culture, this will surely be an eye-opener.

More theory than practice

As a companion book to "Master/slave Relations: A Handbook of Theory and Practice," Dr. Robert Rubel has a tougher time negotiating the world of submissives. As in his "Master/slave Relations" book, "Protocol Handbook for the Leather Slave: Theory and Practice," covers the basics thoroughly. In his astute introduction, Dr. Rubel makes the distinction between Leather and Not-Leather when it comes to BDSM and the D/s lifestyle, which is a truly useful reminder of what separates lifestylers from weekend warriors. The first couple of chapters go a long way toward establishing plenty of essential dos and don'ts. Frankly, most of them are just teaching your slave (or perhaps yourself) decent manners. Like in the "Master/slave Relations: Handbook," "Protocol Handbook for the Leather Slave" maintains that protocols are the key to a successful D/s relationship.

However, protocols only work if they make sense. As the book progresses, "Protocol Handbook For The Leather Slave" veers dangerously close to absurdity. For example, in Chapter Six there is a passage that reads, "In certain instances, the slave will serve as Master's chauffeur. This will include proper dress as a chauffeur, including cap and blazer." Now, if you happen to be a Master who has no concept or idea of your slave pulling the '88 Ford F-150 around to the driveway for pick-up services (or for that matter, wouldn't be caught dead with a slave in a chauffeur's get-up), then what passes for protocol here comes off as over-theatrical and perhaps even silly. Same goes for the intricately detailed dinner plans, which are a bit over the top. If I wanted to go to finishing school, I would have enrolled or my Master would have enrolled me. While High Society may be enticing behavior for some leatherfolk, not all leatherfolk engage in High Society. Some of us don't even own a tux.

Dr. Rubel does offer himself an out early in "Protocol Handbook for the Leather Slave" when he declares the origins of the book to be "my own personal manual of protocol for my own slave," and a page or so later offering "the level of detail I present may be a bit extreme in your situation." Where Dr. Rubel's "Master/slave Relations: A Handbook of Theory and Practice" is primarily a book for Dominants and stays concise to its topic, "Protocol Handbook For The Leather Slave" reads like it might be a guidebook for slaves, but comes off as Master Fantasy material - and a stuffy fantasy at that. I will restate that the first half of "Protocol Handbook for the Leather Slave" is extremely well done, there is plenty here to absorb and a great deal of very useful material (such as caring for Master's leathers and boots or levels to negotiating a Master/slave contract). However, if you're looking for the better of his two D/s guidebooks, start with Dr. Rubel's "Master/slave Relations," then come back to "Leather Slave."

This is an awesome Bible for your Teenage daughter! I bought one three years ago for my oldest daughter who was at that time 13 years old and we attended the Revolve Tour for girls. She has loved it. She enjoys reading her Revolve Bible. My youngest daughter who is now about to turn 12 has been asking for a copy of the Revolve Bible for her Christmas or Birthday present. She said that she has looked at her sisters Bible and that "This is a Bible I can actually understand."

This Bible has inserts that help your teen identify with the scriptures and apply the scriptures to her life. She will learn what God thinks of her as a young woman and what God's plan is for us as Christians.

I believe your teenager as well as yourself as a parent will love the Revole Bible!F This is the Bible every teenage girl should have.

I found that this Bible was laid out to draw the interest of a young woman between the ages of 13-20. Besides the scriptures in each Book of the Bible, there were other short stories and paragraphs interspersed with illustrations throughout to help the person to compare how the words and message in Biblical times of the Old and New Testament could relate to their own personal life. Hopefully, they could come to a conclusion that people have similar problems and situations no matter how many years separate the generations.

Nothing wrong with this edition. Just thought that people might want to know that there is another translation out there that is easier to read AND more fun. It's the translation in blank verse published in unabridged and unexpurgated form by Meridian (0452010837), and edited by Charles W. Dunn, one of the finest modernizations of a medieval classic ever published. The translation was the life's work of Professor Harry W. Robbins.

The Romance of the Rose is the famous and much discussed 13th century allegorical romance. It consists of two parts of unequal length-- the first shorter part by Guillaume de Lorris and the second longer part continued 40 years after de Lorris' death by Jean de Meun. Throughout the medieval period, this was one of the most widely read book in the French language.

Scholars have rather endlessly debated how unified the allegory really is, and the trend recently seems to have shifted to seeing the two authors as less in opposition, and more composing a complete treatment of courtly Love.

For the casual (non-academic) reader like myself, the experience is rather less unified. The de Lorris section is quite lyrical and fits more with what I imagine an allegorical dream poem to be. When Idleness leads the dreamer into the garden of Diversion and when Love shoots him with the five deadly arrows that bind him to the Rose, the imagery is compelling and lovely.

On the other hand, the second part, while often *very* funny is much more obviously satirical with long digressions that focus more on social mores than on the world of the Dreamer as established in the first half. The effect is sort of like a serious and literary Spike Jones song-- which is not at all a bad thing.

"By my faith, said Love,...I want him to be in my court."

This review relates to the work, -The Romance of the
Rose- by Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun,
Translated by Charles Dahlberg, Princeton Univ.
Press, Third Edition, 1995. 484 pp.
This edition of -The Romance of the Rose- is interesting
for it contains all 3 Prefaces which Charles Dahlberg
wrote. In the Preface to the 1st edition, published
in 1971, Dahlberg says: "This translation of the -Romance
of the Rose-, the first in modern English prose, is one of
nearly a dozen volumes during the past decade to present
an edition, a translation, or a major commentary on the
Old French poem. The aim of this book is to provide a
clear, readable text that is as faithful as possible to
the original, particularly in terms of imagery. Because
translations have their pitfalls and because thirteenth-
century assumptions about the use of imagery, indeed of
poetry, are very different from ours, I have provided a
variety of materials that may help the reader to approach
the poem with an approximation of the perspective of that
time. The Introduction, Notes, and Illustrations are
designed primarily to elaborate and clarify such a view
of the poem."
In the 2nd Preface, to the 1983 edition, Dahlberg says:
[after saying that minor errors have been corrected
and additions have been made to the Bibliography]
"During recent years, a number of writers have reemphasized
the contrast between the two authors in their treatment
of the poem's allegory. Such is the case even in the
relatively small space devoted to the poem in Jung's
important book on Latin and French allegory, a work that
parallels the series of essays by Hans Robert Jauss
on the origins and development of allegorical poetry up
to the -Romance-."
In the Preface to the 1995 edition, Dahlberg again
deals with the scholarly publications concerning the
poem which have occurred since the last edition. He
cites works in the Preface which deal with Sources and
Influences ["Among source studies, the greatest attention
has been givven To Ovid: in the Narcissus episode, the
Pygmalion episode, or both. Huot studies the relation of
the Medusa interpolation to these spisodes and to the
Deucalion-Pyrrha passage, Browlee studies the relation
of the Pygmalion and Adonis passages, and Steinle adds
the Narcissus passages to these two."]; The Two Authors;
The Nature of the Allegorical Narrative; The Use of the
First Person; and Early Reception.
This work is in two parts. Part I [The Dream of Love]
is authored by Guillaume de Lorris and comprises some 4,000
plus lines. Part II [The Overthrow of Reason] is authored by Jean de Meun.
The sections of Part I are titled by Dahlberg as: (1) The Garden, The Fountain,
and the Rose; (2) The God of Love and the Affair of the
Heart; (3) The Involvement of Reason and the Castle of
Jealousy.
Part II [The Overthrow of Reason] by Jean de Meun, is
titled in sections by Dahlberg as: (4) Discourse of

Reason; (5) The Advice of Friend; (6) The Assault on
the Castle. False Seeming's Contribution; (7) The Old
Woman's Intercession; (8) Attack and Repulse;
(9)Nature's Confession; (10) Genius's Solution;
(11) Venus's Conflagration and the Winning of the Rose.
There are excellent Notes from p. 357 to p. 425 and
an excellent Bibliography. There are also 64 "miniature
illustrations from thirteenth- and fourteenth-century
manuscripts."
This is an excellent edition, especially for the

wealth of suggested additional schoarly works
available and their approaches to the poem.
-- Robert Kilgore.

Chivalry and Medieval Romance at it's Best

This is a very relaxing yet thought-provoking allegory of life and love, but primarily love. I first heard of it in the film "Shadowlands", about the great C.S. Lewis. After having bought it and read it after hearing Anthony Hopkins describe it to his character's Oxford students in the film, I see it's significance in both that particular film and as a remarkable work of literature which, in it's day, seemed to have been far more popular than even the "Canterbury Tales"; more than twice as many original manuscripts of RotR exist today than of "Canterbury". The Romance of the Rose is fluid, metaphorical, philosophical, lyric and, of course, very romantic. An exquisite illustration of courtly love.

I couldn't put the book down. This is an american story of the struggle that so many single mothers have endured. Abusive relationships can blossom into happy endings. People love to blame their present day problems on their upbringing. Witness the true to life drama of an american family that does not allow the past horrors dictate their future. You won't want to put this book down...

The book takes you on an emotional journey, which is filled with the gamut of sentiments regarding the ups and downs of being raised up in an abusive environment, as a child, and then- lo, and behold- marrying into an abusive relationship as an adult, not once-- but twice. Sometimes you feel absolute sorrow, other times you might say, "how STUPID can she be?" Don't be surprised if you even feel hurt at times, when she goes through hurt, and pain, and abuse-- by spirits of MACHO.

And-yes, there are times of joy, and happiness, showing allout moods of upbeat and high spirits!

The author is very good in her literary expressions. In fact, it gets to the point that you want to DARE NOT put it down(this book); your mind becomes suspenseful and you begin to feel, "I've got to know what happened next!"

It's just a great book... and to top it ALL, the outcome is not defeative for the author-- it's triumph!

I happened upon my copy in an old book store several years ago (there is not even a date in it) and to this day my most treasured book. I have read this book to my children, family and friends. It speaks volumes about life and should be in every classroom in every school. Our lawmakers would also benifit from the pratical wisdom and respect the pages offer. It has become a gift from me to many.

I HAVE A 100 YR OLD COPY AND THE WISDOM IT CONTAINS ,THE WAY IT IS DECISEVLY ARTICULATED MAKES IT A NO-NONSCENSE GUIDE TO CUT THRU LIBERAL FOG OF WHATS RIGHT AND WRONG. IT CONSTANTLY REFERENCES CHRISTIAN VALUES AND DRAWS FROM CHRISTIAN HERITAGE A GREAT DEAL. NOTHING I HAVE READ TO THIS DATE DARES SAY THE THINGS IN SUCH A BLACK AND WHITE FASHION. IT IS REFRESHING TO READ AND VERY INTERTAINING. I AM NOT SURPRISED TO SEE IT STILL IN PRINT AFTER 120YRS, I WONDER HOW MANY BOOKS COULD MAKE THE SAME CLAIM.

Looking for a radical change in how you pursue relationships? Read what the "love critics" aren't telling you. Take a step into the spiritual, read the unbelievable, find a fantastic old reality about the finer points of life.

I recently came across the 1883 edition of this great book, and as I turn each page, I am thrilled by the warm and generous way the authors speak of the stages and values of life. There are thoughts and ideas that are at once Victorian and millenial. It is a throwback to simpler times and a relevent perspective on how little values change in 100 years.

I had not heard of this particular Bible but after reading the reviews of others I thought I would take a chance on it. I absolutely love it. The notes are wonderful - the additional material and maps at the end of the Bible are very very helpful when you are studying. I am a serious Bible student and I highly recommend this Bible. Again, I love it.

I have owned this Bible for many years and have enjoyed it. Ryrie give many useful comments without his denominational views. I would highly recommend getting one. You will not regret it.

This is probably one of the more comprehensive study bibles that I have used. It is very in depth without being too distracting with comments. It is very well organized and has very good maps, charts and other biblical aids. The section on church history is very informative, as are the explanations of different church doctrines. The margins are set up so that anyone could jot notes along with the text for personal study. A very useful bible for any Christian.

I can't say enough about how much the Kirban Reference Bible has helped me in my spiritual life. I stayed up night after night reading and absorbing all I could, for over a week; since it was a borrowed copy. "One day I'll have a copy of my own!
Through studying God's Word; which was illuminated by the commentary & Pictures, on each page. As well as having the most detailed description of the book of Revelation's that I'd ever read; it was illuminating to say the least. Through the unique guide to everyday problem's; I'd found person's, that 'were having similar problems. I'd found the "answer" to the problems we were experiencing; which was "Obedience" to God's Word! My faith had been restored. So yes; I'd recommend the Kirban Ref. Bible.

I have several letters dated back when Salem Kirban andhis family started this ministry in his basement. We have bought his books and two of the Reference Bibles. Let me say that if you want spirit filled revelation of the Word; this is the tool of the Lord. You won't go wrong. All of Salem Kirban books are inspirational.

An exellent Study Bible.

This is a fantastic Bible to own, with symbols and highlighting throughout and margin symbols to end-time events throughout the entire Bible. At the bottom of every page there is a commentary by either Kirban (an Arab), Gary Cohen (a Jew) or Spurgeon; there are many illustrations, timelines and charts, too. The whole of Revelation is his book "Revelation Visualized": a verse by verse analysis. Note that there aren't cross-references.
