Great Value!

The NASB is a highly accurate translation, and the cross-references and translators' notes in this edition make it a great choice for solid Bible study. For a relatively small-sized Bible the large print (which is also dark and bold) is amazing. The words of Christ in red are aesthetically pleasing, and a helpful tool in locating certain passages. This Bible is sewn (not glued) so lays flat on the table. For the price it is amazing value. I've got the burgundy bonded-leather edition. If you already know your way around the Bible DON'T get the indexed edition, as it will just slow you down and get in the way!!! Yes, the wording of the NASB is a little awkward at times as it tries to render the Hebrew and Greek as literally as possible. Try using it along with the New Living Translation (2nd Edition) which is fresh and dynamic, and will provide added clarity to certain passages of Scripture. God bless!

I am very satisfied with the quality of this product. The only problem was that when I got the ISBN off of the Bible that I wanted--that one had a thumbed index & this one doesn't which is odd to me because I thought the ISBN would be the same exact book. Anyway, I am still happy because I got the Bible at nearly 50% less than I would have paid at the bookstore.

Reaching Biblical Proportions

Review Date: 2006-12-18
This edition reaches "Biblical Proportions" or more appropriately the printed text is proportionally sized for comfortable reading! The "Large Print" is large but not overbearing and thus makes reading more palatable on the eyes and reduces fatigue and strain allowing longer intervals of reading time without becoming tired. The binding and quality of materials used in this edition is top notch. They did not skimp and publish a flimsy book but rather published a sturdy book. I like the translation and the layout of the printed words. This is a good edition.

A solid, quality Bible

First of all, the New American Standard Bible is a wonderful translation; the updated version made it even better. Zondervan puts their NASB text in paragraph form, unlike the Foundation's editions. This does add to the ease of reading and comprehension.

The print in this edition is large, not giant, but comfortable to read. What stands out most is the darkness of the print, both black and red, that also contributes to ease of reading.

The center column references are quite thorough with many optional readings of words and passages in the text. Therefore, this is an excellent study Bible. The concordance, too, is better than most.

Zondervan has published a good quality Bible. The bonded leather is quite nice and the Bible is sturdily bound. I really enjoy mine.

Each chapter is a complete story in itself, taking the reader on a new adventure with the elf Nasturtium. The author has a rich imagination presenting stories that are clever, amusing and told with a gentle hand. The illustrations are marvelous. My children (8 & 11 years) and I have read the stories over and over again. This book will certainly set the record straight on the Valentine Castle, the Tooth Fairy, the Weed Fairy and where snowflakes come from.

I loved it!

The book was very creatively and cleverly written. The author shows a true love and understanding of children. Each story takes the children (and adults) on exciting adventures, often to faraway lands.

This book will delight adults as well as children. There are many "life lessons" to be learned and the beautiful illustrations bring the book alive with each new story. The author allows us to escape into a land of make believe, while instilling us with compassion for others.

Imaginative reading for kids and adults alike

Review Date: 2002-12-18
This is the rare children's book that will entertain adults as well as the little ones. Each of the 12 chapters is a unique adventure led by a magic elf (is there any other kind?) named Nasturtium, and three children. While this book is decidedly in the fairy tale genre, it is not the saccharine-laced fare that elicits an inaudible groan from Mom or Dad when the kids choose it (again) for their bedtime story. Adventures include a visit to the Tooth Fairy's castle, an encounter with Mary Sugar Sweet (did you know there is a patron saint of weeds?), and a Honey I Shrunk The Kids adventure on a model train layout.

Thirty exceptionally well done b&w illustrations provide a launching point for young imaginations to fill in the visual details. My four year old listens as raptly to these tales as does my 13 year old niece read them. Call this book the thinking-child's fairy tale.

My wife and I bought a pair of these Missals while wintering in St. Augustine several years ago.
We love our Missals .. it takes me back to my childhood, growing up in the Catholic Church, except that the Latin is missing .. too bad.
The only negative , other than the missing Latin verbage, is that there are only two ribbon markers ... there should be four. I've been on the internet for two hours looking for a version with more ribbons .. to no avail.
Manufacturer; PLEASE, add a couple more markers on the next edition.

I purchased this for my husband and we are now getting one for his father. It is a handsome edition and has lots of great features already listed in the previous review. My husband and I appreciate the short writings telling us what the readings are about each week...kind of a mini-homiliy. It is very easy to read and understand and helps you to participate in the Mass more fully. This book is good for a number of years as it lists the three-year cycle and you look up where we are in the liturgical calendar rather than only getting the Missal for one year at a time. I highly recommend this Saint Joseph edition!

Like most churches, we have books containing the liturgy in the pews. But it is really nice to have your own missal. It is well organized and easy to follow from Sunday to Sunday. One of the nice things about the missal is that is provides additional information about the readings, and how they relate to one another.

One thing that could be improved...the book has two ribbon markers for keeping place. Four would be better.

This is a beautiful edition, with a hard cover and color illustrations. It follows the mass perfectly. My husband has an old missal from when he was a child and some of the readings have since changed somewhat so this updated version is useful to him. Two ribbon markers hold your place and there are sections on the rosary and prayers.

After carefully searching for a bible I could understand, I bought this one. The rewards were a 30 path study guide, study guides to read the bible in one or two years and written in a language I could understand. I was so impressed, that I told my friend, which led to several others in her church that purchased it also.
My only regret is that it is no longer available for purchase. It would make the perfect gift

I have used the NIV Study Bible for years and the binding is falling off. I thought about picking up another one and was going to do just that when this Bible caught my eye. It's guided study paths are rather impressive. When I read a few of the in-text articles, I was hooked. They are a bit more to the point than those in the Life Application Study Bible and are exactly the type of thing I'm looking for. I will still use my NIV Study Bible for some study tasks, but the time I spend in the Word seeking to know God more than know about him, I'll spend with the Christian Growth Study Bible. What a pleasant surprise.

He has ADD and quickly loses interest, but this Bible, with its colored sections of descriptions, etc., has really caught his eye. What really made my day was when his girlfriend (18) told me she would like this Bible for her birthday so they can study them together. Praise God! My prayers have been answered.

NIV Compact Thinline Bible is small enough to fit in to a small-medium sized purse, is very light, and is smooth to touch.
What delights me the most is the beautiful design of the leather cover; the makers brought out max effect using minimum words and carvings..
On the front cover, there is a cross and four figures on each corner.
On the back, there are four figures keeping their places.
On the spine of the bible, the following engraving is carved on the leather: HOLY BIBLE NIV

Two flaws of this bible are the pages and the font size.
The bible pages are so thin and fragile that even turning the pages
can sometimes crumple them!
The fonts are very small; I woulnd't offer this bible to those with poor eyesight.

But overall, this bible is a beautiful piece of work.

The picture and description listed for this bible does not do it justice. This bible is absolutely beautiful to look at and read! I am a Pastor and I carry a bible with me wherever I go. This bible is easy to carry in your purse or bag, it is lightweight, it has gold lined pages, soft leather and beautiful engraving. It has a concordance in the back and the print is easy to read. Before I purchased this bible, I searched the internet for a small, beautiful, easy to carry, bible. I love this bible and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a bible to carry with them on a daily basis.

I own this Bible (in hardcover form), and I wanted to get the same version for my sister for her birthday. I opted to buy the leather bound one, and was very impressed with the beauty of it. Also, the "Life Applications" are helpful, and while I don't always agree with some of the statements, I am grateful for the perspective. By the way, this is the best price I have found (online or in-store) for this Bible. You can get the leather one for only a little more than I paid for my hardcover!

The study helps are good. The translation is OK. The New Living Translation (2nd edition, published in 2005) is a better one than NIV (last updated in 1984). If you can afford it, buy both Life Application Study Bible with New Living Translation (NLT 2nd edition) and NIV Faith in Action Study Bile. The former focuses more on individual verses, while the latter focuses more on the overall message of each chapter and book of the Bible, which most people tend to ignore.

Although my copy is battered and worn it never ceases to provide accurate information. This bible starts with a forward like most, a detailed guide on learning the bible by chapter with guidelines on what to read. Each book begins with historical data that helps you when you encounter someone that challenges your belief. There are maps, dictionary, and mini concordance with helpful tools. There are listings of Parables and where to find them.

People of the last century that have made a great impact on society and its rise or decline are also noted and referenced. I find this tool a remarkable read. I feel blessed to have this version of NIV.

Incredible Bible

Review Date: 2007-07-25
This Cambridge Bible is one of the best bibles you could get. The construction is absolutely flawless. Some leather bibles need to be "cracked in" to shape. By that I mean the binding and papers are stiff (some papers typically stick together from the shine). Not so with this Bible.

The Black goatskin cover is very nice and protects the Bible very well. The pages are thin, but tough, and are not very transparent (words from the other pages don't clutter the page you're reading). The pages are sewn perfectly, it opens very, very nicely (the first open didn't have a single crack/noise). The ribbon to mark the page is wonderfully sewn and extends past the bottom of the page. As for the content, it's everything you would expect in a good bible that is not a study Bible. Just the very simplest of footnotes common to all NIV Bibles, a good cross-reference systems, and a good concordance at the back. The maps at the back are nice also. As for the Word itself, that's exactly what you get. If you're looking for a simple NIV Bible where the scripture is all you want, no fancy introductions or crazy footnotes, then this is it. Easy to read font, Christ's words in red.

The size of the Bible is perfect. It's very easy to carry, yet it's definitely not too small by any means. Just the right size, giving the impression of having some serious elegant significance. A truly beautiful Bible. The only downfall is the size of the font is very small, so if you have trouble reading small print this would not be a good Bible. It is the same print used in some dictionaries and encyclopedia's so you can check those as a reference. The font is bigger then most compact Bibles though, so if you are using one of those as your carry around, this will be a big step up in print and quality.

Overall, it is definitely worth the price. Being the instruction manual for our lives on earth, this is a very worthy edition if you're looking for NIV. Cambridge (being Bible publishers since 1591) do not fall short.

A Wonderful Cambridge Bible!

I have always enjoyed Cambridge Bibles. You cannot beat the quality, the binding, the leather, the Indian pages. Cambridge Bibles are simply put the best Bibles you can ever purchase.

This edition is much like the King James Version of the Pitt Minion edition. I purchased the goatskin edition and simply loved it. The Indian pages smell and feel like the old KJV Bibles of long ago.

The only drawbacks to this Bible are first the letters are small so if you wear reading glasses you might want to skip this Bible. Secondly, the books of the Bible overlap on the same pages in some cases. I prefer the a new book to start on its on page. And thirdly, I prefer not to have the words of Christ in red since all Scripture is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Nonetheless this Bible is wonderful! I gladly give Cambridge five stars for this Bible.

Great product! Best NIV for its size.

Cambridge Bibles in general are my favorite because of their superb quality. This NIV has all the basic features without any opinions or fluff. To me, it's worth spending the money for a quality Bible when we spend this much for a fuel fill-up for our car or day shopping for groceries. This is a once in a lifetime purchase. For me, I'm glad it will last that long.

It's a cambridge Bible, what more can I day? My only real complaint is that the deteurocanon is not crossreferenced in the New Testament or Hebrew scriptures. They are cross-referenced in the Apocrypha section though. Other than that, I'm in love. Two good strong book-marks, an unobtrusive crossreference system, and a scholarly translation all wrapped in leather and gold, what more could I ask for?

I love this version. I bought it because I wanted a Morocco Leather Bible with Apocrypha for reference, but on delving into the NRSV text have decided to replace the ESV with NRSV for daily reading.

The item itself is wonderful and I love the off-white paper stock and the silk ribbons and quality binding... BUT ... what is it with Amazon and high-end Bibles? They seem to send out damaged or poor quality Bibles more often than not. I have bought MANY leather Bibles from Amazon and this copy should be returned -- the gold edging has all but brushed away at the top of the Bible. However, I enjoy the text so much I expect the gilding to wear away anyhow.

PLEASE AMAZON .... inspect your more expensive stock before shipping it so you can replace without inconveniencing your loyal customers.

Scofield's scholarship, as applied to the King James translation, is quite illuminating. A New King James translation, with updated "Scofield" commentary, has essentially replaced this one on the book store shelves, but Scofield and his team worked from the Authorized King James. Therefore, this is the true Scofield Study Bible. I am of the opinion that the poetry of the Authorized King James makes for a richer spiritual experience than current biblical translations. Why water down such a text as King James? Why water down such a commentary as Scofield's? If a reader is determined enough to read the Bible, why fear King James? If a student wades in the waters of biblical scholarship, why avoid the scholars immersed in King James?
Why not stand by the Old Scofield Study Bible?

My husband wanted an Old Scofield Study Bible very badly. He had had one before and liked it very much. He really wanted to get a genuine leather cover instead of bonded leather, but genuine leather is usually much more expensive. He sent me to get a bonded leather one off a different site, but I told him I could get him a better Bible for a better price. I did! The one here was actually less for a genuine leather than he was going to pay for the bonded leather one somewhere else!

This is one of my personal favorite study Bibles. Mine is genuine leather, it is awesome. The construction is good, the leather is about what you would expect, the pages are little thick for my liking( I think this is because the printing is so dark they didn't want any bleed threw). The binding is nicely done. As for content this Bible is a wealth of information, however some theories taught in it I don't find to be scriptually accurate ex.(the gap theory)etc. My recommendation for this Bible is two fold buy it,but be careful know what you believe and take the notes for what they are. Someonelses views on the scriptures.

Great price, great notes!

If your looking for a good quality Bible with solid and reliable study notes this is the Bible for you. I would avoid the "New" Scofield for reasons below:

The first and most weighty reason why the New Scofield Bible is not a Scofield Bible at all is shamefully simple. Dr. C.I. Scofield did not edit it. Dr. Scofield died in 1921!

A book which claims on its title page that a dead man (Dr. Scofield) is one of its editors.

The text of the New Scofield Bible is NOT a King James Bible and it is NOT a Scofield Bible.
