Excellent Prose and Poetry Tells the Story of the LDS ChurchReview Date: 2004-01-29
I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the LDS church as it is written by one of their early leaders.
A Great Read.Review Date: 2004-05-25
Parley Pratt is a master storyteller. Furthermore, he lead a fascinating life that makes for an engrossing read. My favorite was the story about the dogs. (You have to read it to find out what I mean) There is some inspirational talk here as would be expected from any work by a religious devotee. Really a fun read and worth your time.

Definitivamente es una de las versiones de la Biblia mas completas que he visto. LA RECOMIENDO !!!
Altamente recomendada, Review Date: 2004-11-03

Excellent NKJV bible!Review Date: 2005-11-11
Also the type size is very good, I usually read larger print, but this one is very acceptable because the verses are well spread out with meaing there is more space between each sentence, in other words, the verses aren't all smashed together like some bibles I've owned and sold. This also makes for less eye strain and faster reading.
I've owned and do own many bibles, and will have to say that Billy Graham's notes are to the point and easy to understand which can be highly appreciated if you are somewhat confused about some bibles lengthy discussions on theology. It's to the point Christianity in a nutshell!
Another good point about this bible is that the concordance is substantial. On the downside, this bible could have had references in it, that would have made it awesome. But I give it 5 points anyway because I'm so impressed with the thicker paper, minimal bleed through, large concordance and the short and to the point reference material by Billy Graham.
I own the NAS, NIV, NASB, AMP, NLT, GNT, ESV and the KJV and I purchased this one last because of all the bad reports I have heard about it being a poor translation. I have done research on the background of the manuscripts they have chosen, both good and bad research, and am still eager to read it as my sample readings have been very enjoyable. I used to be bent on just picking one translation, the best one, but in many years of studying them all and researching the critics, I have found that none of them is perfect. So I have decided to use several of them to get a grasp on God's word more clearly when I sit for serious study. Since doing so, I have really been blessed. God does protect his word despite man's attempts to develop the "best" translation. Good luck and God Bless.

One of the best daily prayer booksReview Date: 2008-11-13
All of these resources are derived from the historic pattern of Christian daily prayer. But I've been using "Book of Common Worship Daily Prayer" for two months now and I love it. The book's editors were committed to inclusive language, but that has been a rock on which other inclusive-language office books have foundered, and if not done with sensitivity can make the psalms -- the heart of the ancient form of Christian daily prayer -- almost unreadable. This is not the case with BCW Daily Prayer: the editors fortunately chose an adaptation of the psalter from the 1979 BCP. The result is perhaps the most "singable" (and therefore readable as prayer-poetry) of any inclusive-language version of the psalms I've encountered. This is a significant advantage since the historic discipline of daily prayer involves the recitation of a fair number of psalms, and that practice can become tedious or distracting if the translation is stylistically awkward.
The approach to inclusive language in BCW Daily Prayer is somewhat conservative than alternatives like The New Century Psalter: the word "Lord" is used frequently not only in reference to Christ but also as the translation of "Adonai" or "YHWH" in the psalter.
One oddity is that the historic "Gloria Patri..." -- which gives the office a Trinitarian shape and is often used to conclude psalms and canticles on a specifically Christian note -- appears nowhere. "Psalm prayers" -- an equally ancient tradition -- are provided for each psalm but these tend to break up the rhythm of recitation in a way that the trinitarian doxology doesn't. There are inclusive-language alternatives to the Gloria Patri like the Eastern Orthodox "Glory to the holy ... and life-giving Trinity," and are used in other inclusive-language office books, so the wish to avoid "Father/Son" language can't be the reason for this omission.
Still, the reader can supply a Trinitarian doxology whenever s/he wants, and this is just one flaw in a book that otherwise makes the ancient pattern of Christian daily prayer accessible to the contemporary church. I'm delighted it's still in print.

Major topics are devoted to basic prayers, the kind most often committed to memory; daily prayers such as the morning offering and grace before and after meals; days and seasons of the Church year; Catholic living; litanies; and Stations of the Cross. A calendar of saints is also provided, as are two indexes, one of scriptural citations and the other of first lines and common titles.
In Part IV, Family Prayers from Birth to Death, the bishops remind that "Whether in times of joy or times of grief, God is always with us." The subtopic on prayers and blessings for family members is centered on family members, the household, birth and adoption, childhood, marriage, sickness or infirmity, and death and grief.
Part VI, Prayers for the Church and the World, address such topics as Christian unity, the culture of life, evangelization and missions, and social justice. Part VIII, God's Word in Times of Need is made up entirely of scripture passages grouped around issues such as anger; forgiveness; love; quiet; and trouble, crisis, and conflict.

One of the Best Collections of All TimesReview Date: 2003-04-24
When I say I like all of the book, I mean to say all of the prose section. I hate poetry, sorry for that but I cannot help it. This review here is concerned with the prose section.
The book begins with the only novel Poe wrote, namely "Narrative of A Gordon Pym." (For a complete review of the novel, please click on the blue "a_mathematician" to view it in the proper place). The novel takes one fifth of the prose section, and is followed by a subsection called "Tales of Deduction."
The first short story of that section is "The Gold Bug," an interesting story. As a matter of fact, Doyle based "The adventure of the Dancing Men," a Sherlock Holmes's short story, on it. Then it goes into introducing Dupin the French, the first unofficial detective ever. (For a complete review of the novel please click on the blue "a_mathematician" to view it in the proper place).
Then comes "Tales of Horror," and, oh my, this part is the most wonderful of the whole collection. Even though Poe was the first to write in this genre, there still no one superior to him. I am not sure about HP Lovecraft, but I am sure King is not up to him. Poe can bring the chill to your heart. I heard he used to eat much on dinner just to bring nightmares to his night sleep, and when he wakes up in the morning he would record every single detail of his dreams to use it in his short stories.
The stories I prefer are: "The Black Cat," which ruined the life of a very wretched man; "The Pit and the Pendulum," which speaks about the pains of one prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition; "The Masque of the Red Death," whose story I would not have actually liked if not for the marvelous description, Poe provides, for every single bit of occurrence. "The Fall of the House of Usher," which speaks about the life of a very singular person and his sister (This one is considered by many to be the best short story Poe has every written); and "The Oblong Box," which is exactly what Doyle would have written had he got the idea first.
Then comes "Tales of Imagination." This section was the one I did not like that much. He started with a few very descriptive emotional stories (I would only consider them nonsensical, no offense).
The stories I liked here were: "Manuscript Found in A Bottle," which is a pretty funny story about someone being in a foreign ship without people feeling his presence; and "The Unparalleled Adventures of One Hans Pfall," which explores the reasons behind Pfall's wanting to forsake the earth for the moon on his balloon. The latter is more of a novella than a short story.
The next section is "Satirical Tales and Hoaxes." This was the second best section I enjoyed. The best stories were: "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether," which is an insane story, no one could have ever produced such a comedy before; "Some Words with A Mummy," and for those of you who are familiar with the Egyptian novelist Naguib (or Najib) Mahfouz, I may tell you that he had used a similar idea in his first collection of short stories; "The Man that was Used Up," which I can describe with no other word than ABSOLUTELY FUNNY with a very twisted end; "Loss of Breath," is another example for the genius of Poe; "Never Bet the Devil Your Head," HaHa; "The Spectacles," I read this one so long ago and it still possessed its charm with its funny twisted conclusion; "The Literary Life of Thingum Bob, Esq," which was a satirical and wonderful one; and finally "X-ing A Paragraph," which was the best one in the section.
Then come some articles, the best of which were 'Didling' and 'Maelzel's Chess Player.' They were nice to read despite their being out of date.
In the end I would like to apologize for this long review, but you cannot describe - or better yet, review - about a thousand pages in a two liner. I like the book and there is no reason you should not. Poe has affected so many writers, some of whom are: RL Stevenson, AC Doyle, Roald Dahl, HP Lovecraft, Steven King, and so many others, so if you read for any of those you would definitely enjoy this book.

If you never even heard of EAP, shame on you even more!
But if you don't own this book, "you shalt not be suffered to live"!!!!(sorry for dramatizing, but buy this (*) book!!!!!!!! And read it of course, not only buy it and put it on your shelf because it looks nice and when you show it to people, they all say, wow, you got a great collection - they say this, at least one of them says this, because he knows what proud 'n' lucky son you are to own such a beautiful book -> not beautiful because it is thick hardcover edition bound in leather with golden renderings on the pages on golden imprints on the front and back cover.
Legite: (Amazon does not provide pictures for The Complete Works of EAP, and because there are several books in hardcover bearing this title, I do not know which of these books matches the description of the book's design featured in the end, so do not blame me if you buy THIS book because you liked how it does look - if you care for design, take a look around. There has to be some way to retrieve information about the book's design.)

I read Poe's works as a pre-teen child, and some of the stories frightened me so badly that I can remember the details to this day. "The Pit and the Pendulum", "The Premature Burial", "The Black Cat", "The Fall of the House of Usher", "The Tell Tale Heart". All these stories and more will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Poe's longest work, "The Narrative of A. Gordon Pym", proved somewhat tedious, and his poetry isn't the best, but the short stories are great.

This Bible is good for people who might cringe at starting to do a devotion daily because each day is tailored, for example, the Friday devotion is usually short, and I appreciate that. If you're really pressed for time, you can also choose just to read the Verse for the day with your devotion and go back and read the whole Passage later.
The index in the back is also good for looking up devotions specifically by topic, for example, guidance or hope.
Definitely recommended.

Really brings the Bible to life!Review Date: 2007-02-12
I love the devotionals, essays, explanations, and examples that Lucado intersperses throughout the book. Each book begins with an introduction that shows you the "big picture" of that book, and the books are broken down into sections (sometimes a section is a chapter, sometimes more or less than a chapter), each with its own sidebar introduction, a brief related devotion/explanation, a "life application", and list of related passages. Throughout the book there are also full-page devotionals that relate to bigger themes like guilt, forgiveness, love, mercy, grace, and so on.
The devotionals pull from already-published devotions (many are from Lucado's books, but there are also many from other devotional writers such as Charles Stanley).
What I like best about this format is that it helps me see how the Bible--both as a whole and in its individual parts--really applies to my life. It brings some very important messages home in a personal, practical way. I especially like the "Application" section of the sidebars, because it helps me understand how to really apply biblical principles to my life.
