Although this book was dated when I read it and is probably now considered a history book, I found it very enlighening and informative. I think perhaps the author tends to protect Kennedy and Roosevelt(II) but it is still a very good book. It reads very easily and has that Schlesneger signature. I would highly recommend the book to anyone interested in presidential history.

This is a great classical book

We read this in college and it was one of the best books we ever saw on American politics and I read it again last week. Ir shows that it is not a good idea always to have presidents who get too powerful.

The year before George W. Bush took office as president I attended a professional conference where a graduate student offered a paper that posed the question whether Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.'s "Imperial Presidency" was still valid. Quite a debate ensued. Today, in the wake of the Bush Doctrine of preemptive war, and its application in Iraq, I am compelled to offer that this revised volume, with new introduction, answers the previous question with a resounding yea. This has been a very important volume in the study of the presidency, especially regarding the constitution, foreign policy, and war. In the shadow of the Iraqi affair, I would go one step further and say it is a vital work in these troubled times. No, the era of the Imperial Presidency never really went away; and yes, it is a vital concern for the future of the republic and global stability. Schlesinger has recognized this and once again warns us of pending dangers.

Once again important

Although this book focuses on Richard Nixon's abuse of Presidential power, it can apply to the present day as well. Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and Bush have all extended the power of the Presidency in ways the framers of the Constitution would never have dreamed of. I agree with the reviewer who commented about the favoritism towards Kennedy and Roosevelt hence the four stars rather than five. A great read for anyone interested in the American Constitution as it relates to the powers of the President.

This is an old book, but was one that we will keep and pass down for generations. I liked it so much, that I'm still giving it as gifts (years later). Stories are just the right length and the illustrations are nice.

I love this book because I can read it to my 4 year old granddaughter without having to try to make changes to the story as I go so she will understand it. It's not terribly simplistic, but is just right for that pre-school age. The stories aren't too short or too long -- again, just right. There are very colorful illustrations for every page of text, which is nice. The stories seem to adhere pretty much to the original tale, which is to say that they don't change all the endings to make them "politically correct", but they don't dwell on the bad things that happen to the big bad wolf or the witch in Hansel and Gretel or go into any detail. All in all, this is a really nice book to read to kids, with about 19 stories.

This book was given to my oldest child and has been the favorite of all 3 so far. The older 2 have each signed their name in it, trying to claim ownership. The stories are about 10-15 minutes and are well illustrated. I reglued the binder once. It's the best bedtime story book we have.

This book is one of my favorites. It has many short stories that I like to read. When I was a little kid my dad would read me stories from this book. The stories were very entertaining to me. After my dad read to me I would go to bed and we would both be happy. I remember him reading stories from it to my little brother. My brother liked this story too. Neither of us read these stories very often, but we don't want to get rid of the book because it is so good. I would recommend this book for anyone.

Hello Amazon Shoppers,
I recently started to repent and make an extensive study on the Bible in the same way I did for Mathematics. And I was on Amazon and decided to buy myself a Study Bible. I can honestly say I bought unconsciously the PERFECT GUIDE. For each book, the author gives you a outline of what you are about to read, the main character in the story, his or her weakness and strenght, and a timeline graph of what happened during that time in the world. I just open the study bible and on the first page I learned something new. Moses wrote the book of Genesis. Wow...I feel stupid!!!!!
Anyways great book, I'm happy with my purchase and I would recommend it to newcomers even if I dont have any other study bible to compare it with.
But before I forget, let me say I had to use a International King James Version I believe to understand the language. Becuase sometimes I get lost in Psalms and Proverbes.

First of all, I am not persuaded by any man/company's claim of being able to simplify The Word of God.

I have done the research and found the King James Version "KJV' Bible to be the CLOSEST THING TO THE ORIGINAL Hebrew Scriptures. This is the book that men were burned for printing and preaching. All other versions are simply copy-cat bibles produced out of greed and attempt to translate the KJV (its is already in English!). Any further versions take away from the original translation/meaning.

The KJV work was began by William Tyndale in the early 1500s. He began to create a translation of Catholic scriptures into book form so anyone could read the word. His translations were seen as a threat to Catholic powers governing the scriptures. Preists were the only ones that could interpret the word for common people at the time. After his death, his work reached King James, which in turn ordered scholarly research and translation of the scriptures for mass publication.

The task was the most intensive effort ever undertaken to translate the scriptures and involved 52 of the worlds best scholars. The authenticity and meaning was only recorded when all were in agreement. The KJV Bible was finished in 1609, but became mass produced in 1611 ( Known as King James 1611) These men were never paid for their work and the original publishers only received a small portion to cover materials.

No other bible can make this claim, therefore, I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANY NEWER VERSION THAT TAKES AWAY FROM THE ORIGINAL KJV MEANING/ SCRIPTURE. (Ex.NIV,NKJV)

If one does not understand the KJV 1611, simply buy a bible with help notes. The life application bible does just this. It PRESERVES THE ORIGINAL text while adding interpretation and notes for guidance. This bible goes further by provides summary information and background on each book such as :the author, when it was written, where, and to whom. There are also maps, cross references, biblical conversions and more.

This bible pretty much has it all and is very user friendly. It is produced in hard back/leather tutone/large print/ and several sizes. (paper back is the cheapest version).

I love this Bible!

I really love this Bible. I think study Bibles are a great way to think even more about the Lord's Word. This Bible is well made and I really like the texture of the cover. The little sections that elaborate on the individual verses of the Bible help me to think deeper and reflect more about the words I am reading. I also like that there are many versions of these Life Application Study Bibles so you can choose your favorite. I also have the New Living Translation and they are both great.

An excellent book for both adults and children. Lauren presents an altruistic view of events preceding, during and after the loss of her father Mark, to cancer. The simplicity and clarity of her thoughts are expressed so vividly, I cried and laughed by the profound reality of the precious memories surrounding this 11 year old girl and the bonds which loving families are made of. Supported by the loving committment of her mother Kenda, all readers will experience the comfort they share with God in dealing with such a tragedy. A "must read" for hospice families, schools, churches, the community and those who try to comfort loved ones in the wake of life's inevitable end and the memorialization and celebration of a new beginning.

It is a wonderful gift to give to anyone who is facing the loss of a loved one!

With the innocence of childhood embracing her, Lauren allows us all to accompany her and her mom and dad on what can only be termed a most incredible journey. A book is filled with beautiful, original illustrations, poetry, and hopeful insights into what it is like to lose someone you love. It offers very genuine reflections, in detail, of the good things that happen when someone dies. It also describes what is not so helpful at that time.
The book is dedicated to Lauren's dad. With the honesty and innocence of an 11 year old, she proudly tells you of the courage both her dad and mom showed in facing the disease. Together as a family, they share a strength, both physical and spiritual, with readers of all ages. A tremendous resource for anyone facing these challenges in life. A "must have" book for parents, schools, support groups, hospitals, churches....This is an amazing faith journey written and illustrated by a very gifted young lady.

Everyone has faced the death of a loved one. This story of a young girl's (11 years old) journey after the death of her father to cancer is uplifting, inspiring, practical, and encouraging. She tells her story, and then gently guides the reader to reflect on "their story" and to live their life in a way that honors their loved one. Although written to help children (specifically) with grief,I can think of dozens of adults I know that need to read her wisdom! She writes, "I am Daddy's legacy. This means that I am a part of him that lives on. Daddy was very courageous. If I live my life in a way that honors him, then he lives on in honor. Daddy wouldn't want me to become bitter and withdrawn over his death. He wanted me to have a good and happy life when he was alive, and he wouldn't want that to change now. So even though my life has changed, the values that Daddy taught me haven't. Daddy's death was a tragedy. But, it doesn't mean that my life is over. His life inspired me. His determination inspired me. I am so proud that he is my father." This book lifts the spirit. It is a treasure!

This book is an excellent Christian-centered perspective from a young girl about the death of her father.

Her life changes since her father's death are felt through her upfront and frank discussions about how a young child can cope and what helps and what doesn't. An excellent book for children or parents of children who have had a parent or close friend die.

The NIV Study Bible is very popular with adult readers because of its easy readability and the excellent study notes on every page. This wonderful New Adventure Kid's NIV Study Bible is a colorful, involving study Bible with many inserted pages that are personal to young kids, relating to their lives and families. There are question pages, lists of facts interesting to kids by category, and a page in the front where the child can write his or her name, who gave him/her the Bible, and for what occasion. I found this Bible for my youngest godson (age 9), and his mother tells me he is reading it often! I'm getting it for my daughter who turns eight this summer, and I'm certain she will love it! Your kids 8-12 will also, whether they are already Christians, simply interested, curious, or actively seeking to learn more about God's word. God Bless anyone reading my review- hope it helps you made a decision!

This Bible is great for young readers and will keep them going well in to High School. There are many graphics throughout this Bible and special interest comments that explain why people did things the way they did or why they wore a particular type of clothing. Our church gave this New Adventure Bible to all children graduating into the third grade. The NIV translation is pretty understandable to young readers. Each book has an introduction that is designed towards the young reader. There are also special pages to enhance a childs understanding: for example in addition to the actual text of the ten commandments - is a special page with pretty graphics that re-word the commandments in language for youth. A special page explains "How to pray" - another summarizes Old Testament Prophets, and yet another page called "Getting to know Jesus" helps kids understand what it means to be a Christian. Just like the 'grown up' Bible - this book is a Red Letter edition. My fifteen year old still loves this Bible.

I agree with the other reviewers who praise the quality of this New Testament. Also, it is a very interesting version, translated by a group of Catholic and Protestants in 1952. Even with vision problems, I find this little New Testament quite readable. And then there is the fact that the price is so reasonable! Remember that the "Word is a lamp unto our feet...." Psalm 119.

I was looking for a small RSV New Testament and Psalms and the one issued by Oxford University Press on the 50th Anniversary of the RSV is no longer available. I happened across this Bible (a friend had the full edition) and love it! I'm Orthodox and this Bible certainly looks Orthodox, with the icons on the cover.

The type size is very good for a small Bible - you're not squinting. It's nicely printed and bound and the price cannot be beat.

The RSV is preferred by many Orthodox Christians in the U.S., so this is Bible is a good choice, particularly since the Oxford RSV is becoming more difficult to find. The Catholic-mandated changes to the text are so small, that the Orthodox will have no objections to this Bible. And shame on them if they have issues with using a "Catholic" Bible!

The Psalms show the alternative numbering for the Psalms that the Orthodox are familiar with.

This little NT and Psalms is quite compact and, at the same time, uses a very readable font size. The RSV-CE is, no doubt, an arguable translation for many of our brethren, but I like it. This bible is nicely bound and I like it quite well. Kudos to Ignatius Publishing. Fr. Fessio hits another home run!

The only other thing I can say is that the cover is nice and the binding allows for the book to lay open without it wanting to close itself and you don't even have to force it like some true hardcover books. I now have the LARGE PRINT edition and it is much easier to read. ISBN: 0310935806

I now have a different perspective of how God uses who He chooses in order to do His will and that no one race or ethnicity is any better than another.... Also, I can now show my children's Sunday School class how each race had an integral part in biblical history.... Thanks for the opportunity to review this magnificent historical account.....

Although I have other KJ versions, this is the best buy that I've ever made because of the TRUTH regarding biblical geography! Once I purchased this one, everything fell into place in an accurate manner as I used my biblical study maps, books and other study tools for reference. Has anyone noticed how here in the West, Noah and his family are skimmed over, Abraham is spoken of briefly, but a rush is made to tell the stories of Moses and David as if they are the beginning of humanity? Check your own study maps and books! How many, if any, give indepth info or mention of Noahs family tree? Amazing! Simply amazing how so-called theological scholars had the NERVE to eliminate others from the Bible! In addition, may I mention how the names and geographical lines were drawn up to divide/change the biblical locales? For starters, I suggest the map book titled, 'Then And Now Bible Maps' which can be found right here on Amazon between $12 and $14 only. It has clear plastic overlays showing the old world and the world as it is today. It is a great beginners map for a reasonable price. I must say, however, common sense should tell the average person that caucasians were NOT of Eastern heritage! (Here I'm referring to all of the biblical pictures, drawings and... let's not forget movies!) Their skin peels and turns red as a beet as they lay out in the sun trying to get a "TAN" to make their skin color darker, due to the lack of melanin!!!!!! As we all know, the temperatures in the East are much hotter and stronger!

When it comes to biblical truth, what is fact should be told! What has been verified as truth, should be told! there is only ONE God who is the ONLY Supreme One! No man should have the audacity to claim supremacy over another simply because of their skin color! To take this attitude into the theological decisions regarding the biblical truth is sad. I love this Bible for it's enlightenment of truth.

Purchasing The Original African Heritage Study Bible should be a must for all people. It is a purchase you will not regret.

I have long observed the lack of information on most of the popes, especially those of the middle ages and most especially the first century or so after the Reformation. J. N. D. Kelly's book does away with this problem. He provides pretty much all the information that is known about all the popes and antipopes throughout history, looking at their lives both before and during their reigns. They are also organized conveniently in the order they reigned, rather than alphabetically. In a word, this would be a worthy investment for any student of history who, like me, has felt and resented the lack of knowledge on many of the historical popes.

What a great book for so little money

I have never purchased any reference work of such exquisite quality for such a small price. Two thousand years of history of the Holy See within anybody's reach. Highest quality research. No hagiographies but merely a stating of historical facts. This book is truly a great treasure to me.

Excellent

This book is excellent. I don't know where to start. Often, we study history with respect to different countries, geographical areas, or religions. This book draws them all together. It provides insight into what these men were thinking, and the personal and political influences they had to deal with. Really interesting.

You don't need to be a Catholic to enjoy this book

- I'm not, but I did. A compelling collection of hard historical fact, complex theological issues and magnificent trivia, this is not only a great reference book but read cover-to-cover makes a great yet compact history of the Roman Church - and indeed of Rome, Italy, Europe, western civilization etc.

Mirabilis!

Without a doubt, this is the best available general resource source on papal histories, well referenced and organized with a no-nonsense writing style that makes it both an invaluable source of information for scholars and a fun book to just open to a random page and read.

The collection of papal mini-biographies here is the most complete I know of, including even the various anti-popes and the historically questionable Pope Joan. Where the available information is incomplete or contradictory, author, editor and researcher J.N.D. Kelly usually points that out. Other books give more information about specific aspects of the papacy, but none offers such a wide range of information between two compact covers.

My one complaint is a minor one: Mr. Kelly's judgments about what did and did not happen and who should and should not have been pope (regarding everything from Pope Joan and the anti-popes to conspiracy theories surrounding the unexpected death of Pope John Paul I in 1978) tend toward the official Vatican view more often than I'd like. But a book has to take some point of view, and if Mr. Kelly had done the opposite I'd probably be complaining now that he was a bit too antagonistic for my taste.

All in all, this is an irreplaceable resource for any theologian, religious scholar, or intellectually curious reader.
