Characters are often interchangeable in war novels. This is true even in the works of some of the best novelists of the WWII era; including Mailer (Naked and the Dead), Wouk (The Cain Mutiny) and even James Jones (The Thin Red Line). Shaw is able to portray soldiers as true individuals fighting to remain individuals in the framework of the military and a world war. While this novel covers much in the way of history and geography, it is really the story of three very-real and independent men who live in a world that does not value independence.

The Young Lions is a powerful novel written in the years immediately following World War II. It is a gritty and passionate novel, and in reading it the motivatations of men in times of war to acts of courage, cowardice and base violence come to life in the protagonists. Shaw is a artful in the of crafting his words and sentences in a provoking yet thoughtful manner that is nothing less than masterful. Shaw presents and discusses many complex themes through his characters and vignettes in the story that, having read The Naked and the Dead, it is difficult to tell which one comes first as the truly post-modern American novel.

Although it is a somewhat thick novel, it reads exceptionally fast.

Perspective, anyone?

I have never been presented with a better view of World War II. Usually, I get the point of view of a U.S. soldier in France, pushing against the Panzers. Never have I had the opportunity to see the war through Nazi eyes, or even Jewish eyes. Seeing that our enemy was just a kid, concerned with nothing more than his own well-being. Seeing the German Army as a unit just as dysfunctional as the U.S. army is usually portrayed was absolutely beneficial, as was the presentation of Christian's hesitation in turning a Jew in, but does anyway, just out of duty. The perspectives is the first of two standout characteristics of The Young Lions. The second is the way Shaw manipulates the characters to manifest them into believable, tangible people, to which everyone can relate. Even the Nazi, usually hated by Americans, is portrayed realistically and humanly, instead of in the more typical animalistic, murderous way.

Don't be put off by the war setting. This brilliant epic novel revolves around a richly drawn cast of characters - just ordinary people at the onset of the story - and shows how their lives become entwined in the ensuing conflict of WW2. One word of warning, though: James Salter has written a great reflective introduction to this new edition of the classic novel (first published in 1949) but spoils it by giving away the ending of the story and divulging the fate of the three central characters you're supposed to be rooting for over 662 pages! If you haven't read The Young Lions before, then I suggest you skip the introduction and go back to it after you've fininshed the novel.
As for the author: one of America's greatest and most-gifted novelists and short story writers, Irwin Shaw is best remembered for his Rich Man, Poor Man TV mini-series in the 1970s (now available on video). The quality of writing and depth of character in his classic novels is far superior to most of his predecessors today. A groundbreaking pioneer of the big multi-character blockbuster novel, every author who has followed Irwin Shaw - from Stephen King to John Grisham - owes a debt to this literary trailblazer. My favourite novels are The Young Lions; Rich Man, Poor Man; Nightwork; Evening in Byzantium; Two Weeks in Another Town; and the short story collection Five Decades, which contains such gems as 'The Girls in their Summer Dresses' and 'In the French style.'
Try to get your hands on the brilliant biography, Irwin Shaw by Michael Shnayerson, for the full story of this legendary author's life and work.

A true classic of men at war.

This is truly one of the great novels dealing with World War Two. Throughout, the novel switches perspectives from that of a German lieutnant to an American private. The story begins shortly before the outbreak of war, and continues until the war's ending.

Irwin Shaw seems to capture the flavor of both the American and German armies, and what the attitudes and perspectives of their soldiers might have been like. One thing that Shaw cannot be criticized for is soft-peddling the crimes of the German Army. One of the things the reader will see is the slow descent of the German protagonist from an essentially good man to a thorough skunk. Personally, I thought Shaw might have overdone it a little bit (just my opinion). To clarify: I thought it might have been more effective to show the German soldier as a basically good man caught up in an organization committing wrongful deeds. Instead, Shaw chose to have the character himself become evil. Well, that's the author's choice to make, and Shaw certainly tells a compelling story.

This is an engaging story that has a strong authentic feel to it. I found it to be a rich reading experience and this is one of the truly great stories of World War II.

This book is definitely designed for women of color. It has many different ways to study, it offers quotes, and african historical data that's not found in a normal bible. What I love most about this bible is how it relates to everyday challenges and leadership. I've brought 4 copies, one for myself, and three for friends they love it.

Last night I was looking for something in Acts to share with my daughter, and how pleased we were to find her name and a "African Presence in the Bible" segment written about her name! The whole time I was growing up in the church, I saw every Bible character as caucasion and blonde. It was eye opening for me to learn that the majority of those people would have had to be of African descent based on where the events written about took place. This Bible is a treasure because not only does it explore the African presence in the Bible, but it also highlights women of African descent, and women's issues/feelings, etc. as it relates to Bible events. I find my sense of worth and value in the relationship Jesus had with all types of people including Africans and women. And this Bible is my favorite translation, the NIV, which I have used exclusively since around 1990.

I spent hours online comparing Bibles before buying this one. Even though it's much less expensive then many other Bibles, I find it more informative. With each book, there is extensive background information (historical and on the writer), charts, maps, diagrams, outlines of each book, a concordance, and much more. I love the parenthesis used in the verses, comparing the King James with other versions. I found it helpful during Bible studies. I'd buy it again when this one falls apart!

Best Verse Cross Reference Study Bible

Review Date: 2003-03-10
Mine is the 1950 Revised Edition of Dickson's Indexed Bible by John A. Dickson Publishing Co. The useful supplementary features other reviewers have mentioned so.
For the verses cross reference throughout the Old and New Testament, this is the best and most resourceful out there, better than Scofield, Thompson, Nelson...

However Dickson's does not provide a commentary, my recommendation is going with Bullinger's one-volume (large-print edition is even better) study bible and make a good team.

For readers who like multi-volume set, in addition to convenient one-volume, I recommend Interpreter's Bible Commentary. Each page design is divided into verse, exegesis and exposition. See if you like the current edition or the previous edition copies (mine's throughout 1950s) better.

A meticulous academic set recommended, less known to the public, is the Seven-Day Adventist's Bible Commentary. SDA's is accommodative for non-SDA readers as Ellen G. White's comments are put in separate sections. SDA's design is readers should not have to possess knowledge of Hebrew and Greek to enjoy studying the Bible.

Advanced reader may prefer individual Books shopping, whether one's aim is about `instead of' or `in addition to'. For example, for the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), one may consider Judaism commentary (Rashi, Hertz, Munk, Neusner) to look at the Hebrew Bible the way it was studied by the Hebrew nations; Gospel of John: Raymond Brown 2 vols; Schnackenburg 3 vols; Book of Revelation: G K Beale, David Aune 3 vols, Bullinger.

Like more tools ? Try "Timechart on Biblical History", "Masoretic Text", "Interlinear Bible", Fulton Sheen "Life of Christ", R C Foster "Studies in the Life of Christ".

My advice is always take your time to search and add to your collection/potential to-have list.

I would recommend this study Bible for every Christian. It is, along with the Thompson Chain Reference, the best general study Bible on the market. It will help the believer to dig into the Word on their own. It has the best outlines of all the books I have seen. Though I too use some specialty Bibles too many general Study Bibles, i.e the NIV Study, are so crammed with notes the reader can become distracted. The tools available in this edition of the KJV are there to help us think and understand on our own. Get a notebook, a pencil, and a willing heart and let the Spirit use this Bible in your life.

This is a terrific resource with a real dictionary, topical study helps, many notes before and after the chapters and much more. I especially like that the helps aren't mixed in with the text. You need this help.

My family was given this book when my mother was dying of cancer. Since that time, I have no idea how many times I've opened it up again and browsed through it. The version I have is leather bound, and has thin pages like those you'd find in a Bible. It came in a box, which has helped it stay nice through the years. I personally would recommend buying the leather edition rather than the paperback; It makes a better looking, more sturdy gift.

I have so often used this book when trying to think of appropriate verses to add to the letters and cards I send to others. I plan to buy a couple copies to give to people who are going through trials right now.

For the most part the verses are organized in a helpful manner, and I enjoy reflecting on them when I feel discouraged, anxious, etc. There are 9 sections, with numerous sub-sections. For example, under the section titled "Jesus is Your ...", some of the subsections are "Savior", "Lord", "Love", etc. Other sections include: The Bible is Your ... What to Do When You Feel... What to Do When You Are ... What To Do When ... What the Bible Has to Say About ... Truth From the Bible About ... What You Can Do To ... God's Plan for Salvation.

Personally, my husband and I believe that a few of the verses, especially those found in the sections relating to Physical Sickness and Finanical Trouble, are not always applicable to us today. In some cases, they are taken out of context. (We are not promised that He will physically heal our ailments today the way Jesus and his disciples healed people while on Earth.) However, I would not let those few verses deter me from giving this as a gift.

The best Scripture-based "Promises" book available
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-29
The compiler of this book (Dr. A. L. Gill) has crafted the single most powerful book of God's Promises. First, the Scripture is primarily drawn from the King James Version of The Bible. Newer "Living" translations, while they may be useful, occasionally change the meaning and context as a by-product of "updating" the language. With King James Version Scripture, you can't go wrong. Second, this is a reference work organized in a primarily situational manner. If you have a need, the book guides you to Scripture that addresses that need. Finally, other than the organizational text, it's 100% Scripture. Too often authors of "Promises" books add their own agenda and interpretation. Depending upon the author, this can cause more harm than good. This book places God's word in your mind and in your heart and lets you decide what He is trying to communicate to you. I consider this to be an essential book for any Christian seeking a deeper understanding of God's Word.

There is something completely appropriate and right about a handwritten book being made by hand. It is to by-pass the modern age of mass production and mass minds. There is an umistakable feel to this book- it is made to be felt, caressed, and even smelled or tasted. It is from different age.
Potentially this journal is the greatest tome ever written- for it has infinite potential. This book can be anything. It can be you- your innermost thoughts lovingly, or feverishly, written out by hand. Writer and journal become one. That is how magic happens. This is especially true when you go back to read your journal and you find thoughts far beyond what you ever dreamed that you could express. Perhaps spirits look for this kind of book, and writer, so that they may inspire your soul and hand....

This journal is really just a beautiful leather journal cover wrapped around a machine-made journal insert. While the leather itself is wonderful -- soft and supple and with that beautiful leather scent -- the paper journal insert is rather inexpensively made . The paper has a glossy shean to it that does not reflect the style of the leather cover. This journal should have a heavy cotton paper, and not a commercial quality, shiny insert.

i got this study bible for myself at christmas time in 2007. it is written from a creationalist point of view. to counter evolution. all of the hard versus you thought you would never understand are broken down. what i did was i started out using a sharpie highlighter but it bled though the pages. i went to a christian book store to get a bible highlighter it was almost $4.00 just for one color. and when i got it home i could hardly see it on the paper. so i went and bought a set of twist up crayons at walmart. there is 10 different colors. so i would highlight a verse or word that stood out. or i would highlight a verse and the corresponding explaination at the bottom of the page in the same color. let me tell you, this really makes it nice to find a verse quicker and by using the same color on the verse and explaination it really helps to locate the harder versus and their meaning. check out my other reviews on how to really study the bible with just a few products. by using these products over the last 8 months i have learned and reatained more than ever in my life. get 1 or all of these products and watch the bible come alive. i bought 3 of the hardcovers for my relatives. and 2 soft covers for my parents and brother. i like the softcover better it lays open easier, but i bought the hardcovers because they were a little cheaper.

The good and the bad.

The good;
First let me say I agree with the other reviewers and will tell you this is a wonderful study Bible. I purchased it because I am a fan of Dr. Henry Morris and his work in studying and making available to Christians everywhere strong scientific basis for the literal interpretation of the Bible and creation.
The notes in the Bible with his insights are wonderful and will help you grow in a your understanding of the Bible. The notes are extensive and as one reviewer noted they are the same font size as the Bible text and do take up a considerable amount of the page throughout the Bible. I did not really find this a hindrance at all and in-fact like the fact that the larger font makes the notes easier to read. I also liked the self-pronouncing text and in-text explanations of archaic words, So I think that is really a matter of personal preference.
I would not really look at this so much as a traditional study bible but as a bible with a commentary built in.

The bad;
I did not know Dr. Morris's denominational affiliation and I really did not expect that he would have any dogmatic theological positions in his notes other then his strong stand for a literal six day creation.
But here is an excerpt from his introduction to the Bible;

"The Bible does contain many teachings that Christians have disagrees about, of course, and some annotated Bibles try to take neutral positions on such controversial doctrines. I have thought it best, however, to express my own convictions on these matters, even at the risk of losing some readers who hold other views...Based on this literal and contextual approach, the notes become what one might call Baptistic in ecclesiology, pre-millennial in eschatology, non-charismatic in pnematology, and moderately Calvinistic in soteriology. These are man-made terms, of course, and no attempt has been made to develop formal theological doctrines in the notes. I have tried to be irenic, rather than argumentative, in dealing with such controversial matters, so it is hoped that anyone who disagrees with any particular annotation will still find the other notes helpful and profitable."

As a Charismatic Armenian I do wish Dr. Morris had taken a more neutral position on matters that in my opinion are probably outside of area of expertise as a creationist bible teacher, and had I known this about him and the bible notes I may not have bought it. But I will say to his defense he does not take a very strong dogmatic stand in the notes even though it does become obvious what he believes about certain bible passages. For instance he does not dogmatically say that the spiritual gifts in 1st Corinthians 12 stopped with the Apostles but the notes do reflect the fact that he does not believe they are for today either.

Here is an example of Dr. Morris's notes from 1st Corinthians 12:8
"...No individual would have all the gifts, nor (probably) would any one church. Some would cease with time, others would be added, as needed. They are gifts of the Spirit "as he will" not "as I wish". "

And 1st Corinthians 12:10
"...The word tongue itself (Greek glossa from which we get "glossary"), always refers either to a definite structured language or else the physical organ of speech as used in both biblical and extra-biblical Greek writings (never meaningless noises)."

To me this reflects the misunderstanding of charismatic christians by non-charismatic christians and the gifts of the Spirit.
Modern day speaking in tongues are often in known foreign languages and in our modern times have resulted in people that were present when they were being spoken that knew those languages recognizing them and being converted to the Lord by hearing them. It is not just "meaningless noises".
Additionally, the gifts of the Spirit are indeed given by the Lord as he wills and not as we desire but if we are not open to them being from the Lord in our modern time he does not force them on us either.

I'm generally an N.I.V. fan but several friends have an N.A.S.B. One had this particular version with Wide Margin, Large Print, Side column reference. I purchased one. It is Just Great! Lots of room for notes, excellent cross-references, Print is MY SIZE! (I'm over fifty) Only two minor negatives: 1= Black & white maps, 2= Paper is lighter/thinner than my regular bible. I love reading with the option of placing notes in this wide margins. It is becoming my favorite Bible.

Other than the rather bland "rose colored" burgundy leather cover which I expected to be a deep burgundy with something of a sheen to it, this bible is a pleasure to use. It is heavy but not cumbersome. The point size of the font could be reduced to a 9pt and still be very readable thereby reducing the thickness and therefore the weight by some meaningful measure.

This is my second copy since I sent the first back because of excessive creasing of about 20-25 pages beginning with the psalms. This is apparently a problem at Foundation since others have made the same comments as far back as 2000.

The second bible is much better in that regard with creasing still present but to a lesser degree than the first.

The paper is very nice indeed albeit crease-prone. Nonetheless this is a quality bible which will serve me well. It reads very nicely with the single column being a perfect length for quick reading as well as more meditative reading. The type is consistently dark and sharp. Very easy on the eyes in part due to the larger font but just a tad smaller and it still would be excellent.

I think this will be one of my favorite reading bibles along with the New Jerusalem Bible.

In spite of my negative comments on the creases which I pass on to forewarn people of the possibility, this is a very high quality bible. I recommend it highly since my exchange was better than the first and Amazon's handling of the return was exemplary.

It's a matter of personal preference, but I prefer the Ultrathin edition of the NASB, ISBN: 1581350279. It has two columns in paragraph style, with concordance, cross-references, maps, optional red-letter, optional thumb indexes, optional genuine leather. I just really like compact bibles like the ultra-thin, which is half as thick as the above version.

The ultra-thin version is paragraph style, whereas the above version is verse style. Verse style is lame, with one verse per line. It's harder to read, it puts breaks in the text in artificial positions, it encourages taking verses out of context, and it puts less text on each page. Do yourself a favour, go to the...NASB web site and choose an NASB version that is in paragraph style. It's time Lockman stopped making these lame verse style bibles.

Great quality for a great price....

I love the wide margins, and nice readable print of this bible. The single side column format allows for a more natural flow when reading than a double column format. I love burgundy bibles because it reminds me of the precious blood of Christ which was sacrificed for us. This edition is a bit lighter in color than any burgundy bible I've seen. This is an excelent value for a bible of this quality. I spent a lot of time surfing and comparing prices.
Maps are black and white but very detailed. There are no notes so your only help will be the Holy Spirit. I prefer this method of study initially, and then I resort to scholars notes and study aids. The only bible I've seen better than this one is the same bible in calfskin for about $60 more.

Exceptional quality.

I had an old one (1977 edition) and I was very impressed with that one from the point of view of the side column and the point 11 font.

The updated version gives a much wider margin for note taking which I love to do while updating the language order.

The stitching is of the highest quality (Smythe sewn) and all in all an excellent Bible for study with several cross references.

I just recently purchased this Bible, and I truly love it. It is so easy to understand and love the fact that the Message is right next to it. I have recommended this product to other's and they love it as well.

I had attended a Bible class where a fellow student shared this Bible. Couldn't wait to purchase one on Amazon where the price was right. This is the best of two great translations/paraphrases. The Message is easier to read when the verses are aligned with those of the NIV.

Refreshing and reliable reading, but some suggestions

I've always had my doubts on The Message version due to its seemingly careless and unrestricted translation of the texts. But when paralleled with the more trusted (though definitely not perfect) NIV translation, I at least have something to fall back on if I ever doubted some of the phrasing in The Message. Together, it becomes a refreshing read while still feeling backed up by the more reliable NIV.

Although generally a good compilation, there are a couple things that I would've liked to see: the red color on Jesus' spoken texts (for at least in the NIV), and perhaps a more distinguishable font between the two translations (as I read one translation, I would accidentally jump to the other one when I turn the page).

A little smaller than I had hoped, but that's why they call it "handy." I have a hard back version of this book and I gave it to the church so a resource could be there also.

This book provides an excellent resource for bible study, both historically as well as practical application. I enjoy its use for preparing for sermons or bible study at church. Superb resource.

I didn't know it could be this good

This Bible is great! The size is perfect for carrying around, and though this is the 'handy size' edition, the text is not difficult to read. The chain-reference makes referencing subjects and themes so easy, and there is also a general index and concordance. In addition there are archeological suplements, maps, and various other research and reference tools at hand. Hands down the best Bible I've had the pleasure to use.

I must confess, I ended up giving this Bible away. Though I am primarily a Thompson NASB and KJV user, I bought this Bible to cross-reference with the less-accurate NIV translation. However, I bought it in Handi-Size, which really leaves a tiny print. Rather than altering the layout, the total print picture is simply smaller than the regular size. Now, I have reasonably good vision for a bifocal man in his forties, but it was just too hard for me to read, and I gave it to one of my employees with younger and better eyes. I would recommend that anyone actually look over this smaller size before buying.

Like my NASB Thompson, construction is certainly better than Nelson and some others, just not up to Kirkbride's older standard. See my NASB review for full description.

We have really been happy with this Bible for our daughter, age 13. It has explanations of the books of the Bible as well as additional blocks of age-appropriate explanatory information throughout the chapters. Well-laid out and very attractive to use. Very informative and educational.

We purchased this Bible for our 7 year old daughter for her Baptism. It's AWESOME! Easy to read- nice little devotionals throughout - and it's a Bible that she can use as she grows.

I purchased several of these biblesYoung Women of Faith Bible (NIV) as gifts for a group of inner city girls I am ministering to. These are awesome Bibles for young girls/women. They have gone from the "dread" of reading the Bible to looking forward to it. This helps to make the Bible relative to their lives today. It is beautifully packaged and includes notes that relate to them well. A beautiful Bible.

We like the Bible itself but the paperback cover started curling immediately and we are very disappointed with that. My daughter doesn't like the Bible so much as a result.

My daughter gets much use out of this and she does not have a hard time understanding it as she has with past Bibles. Highly recommended.
