Not just for Ladies!

THE LADIES' HOME JOURNAL began as a column by Louise Knapp in her husband's publication, TRIBUNE AND FARMER. Mrs. Knapp's writings quickly became so popular, she was given her own periodical in 1883: THE LADIES' HOME JOURNAL AND PRACTICAL HOUSEKEEPER. The "Journal" has been in print continuously since then. The format and look of LHJ and even its name underwent changes over the years. The current glossy color magazine bears little editorial or content resemblance to its early-20th Century antecedent.

The articles in THE LADIES' HOME JOURNAL TREASURY (published 1956) are an excellent window into America's and the world's past: Rudyard Kipling tells of a famine in India in the 1890s and Admiral Byrd, just back from the North Pole, gives his thoughts on what a "hero" is. Benjamin Harrison describes life in the White House, Grover Cleveland opines why Woman Suffrage would be a bad thing, Teddy Roosevelt contributes an essay on mothers and Woodrow Wilson weighs in on the Monroe Doctrine.

There's works by Helen Keller, Eleanor Roosevelt and Margaret Mead. A woman gives insight into domestic life in Nazi Germany while a man predicts in 1931 what the world would be like 10 years later. Also included are superb fiction and poetry by some most famous authors and bards. Another highlight are the many color and b&w illustrations of vintage covers and advertisements. And that's just scratching the surface of this 580 page oversized anthology. It's all quite fascinating, and highly recommended to everyone!

Laughed, I thought I was going to die. It took, several days for me to actually get through the whole book. Not because I didn't try to read the whole thing in one go, but it's difficult to read when you luagh so hard your eyes water and yor sides ache. I had to put it down and walk away. When, I thought it was safe to go back I tried to pick up on where I left off, but in a very short time I had to put it away and try to catch my breath. **Warning do not drink milk or strong ginger ale while attemting to read this book**

Ladies' Pages is an original and intriguing study of black women's magazines in the United States. Much of the material in the book was new information for me. For example, I was unaware of the rich history of African American and particularly African American women's magazines before Essence and Ebony. I was also unaware that black males founded Essence and of the relationships between Essence and Latina magazine. A strength of the book is that it provides insights into the migration experiences of African American women during the early twentieth century, an often overlooked topic. Moreover, Rooks' examination of issues of respectability, sexuality, domesticity, and urbanization in early women's magazines provides an historical perspective that is useful for understanding African American women in contemporary popular culture. While the book may have been enriched by more thorough examination of why particular magazines lasted as long as they did, by a less abrupt conclusion and by more analysis of O Magazine and the recent changes in Essence magazine, the book still was one of the most informative books I have read in a while.

Ladies, Choose the Boring Guy - Especially If You Have Issues is one of the most provocative, compeling and biblically thought provoking books for single women (and women in general) books I've ever read. The content far exceeded my expectations. If you have the need for answers of why you've made the relational choices you've made in the past - this is the book for you. Great book! I recommend it to every one.

This 1968 book geared to those involved in women's clubs is not only fun to read, it still offers lots of good, solid information. Topics cover everything from why clubs are important to naming the club, planning meetings, publicity, officers, fund raising, engaging speakers, and on and on. Dated of course, but worth the reading. Oh, the clever drawings alone are worth finding this book. And it would be a hoot to use for discussions at your next "club" meeting.

Interesting behind-the-scenes NASCAR drama

Ladies, Start Your Engines... by Kimberly Raye: This is a very cute story about a car owner's daughter who fights back against her very dependent family's expectations that she work behind the scenes and act like a girly-girl by joining a rival team to do the hands-on mechanic work she loves (and is very talented at!). At times, I wanted to smack her father/brothers because their chauvanistic attitudes were so irritating - they had some gall to continue to ask her to do their promotional work after they had fired her! Although a very satisfying 100 pages, this would have made a great full length novel - I was left wanting to know more details about the New Year's Eve race, and there was lots of potential for the development of colorful secondary characters like Jaycee. This story shows that there is a place for women in promenent roles in this sport. And, the romance between Mac and Savannah sizzled off the pages, particularly during the Christmas Dance.

'Tis the Silly Season by Roxanne St. Claire: This magical story loosely reminded me of the very enjoyable Family Channel Christmas movie starring Roma Downey and Eric McCormick, where she and her daughter pose as his family to dispel his carefree bachelor image and convince a family-oriented man to enter into a buisness deal with him. In Roxanne St. Claire's NASCAR version of this storyline, kindhearted and hard-on-her-luck Lisa and her young sons find the Christmas spirit and the makings of true happiness as they work with NASCAR driver Clay to lure a toy company's sponsorship. I loved the kids in this story, and Lisa's loving/protective relationship with them! Clay was so very kind to them, and it was very heartwarming how his presence helped Lisa find healing from the tragic Christmas of her childhood. This story also gave an interesting glimpse into the delicacies of securing corporate sponsorship, something that the fan rarely considers beyond the colorful paint scheme and clever advertisements that sponsors add to the sport.

Unbreakable by Debra Webb This story gives an interesting glimpse into the physical and mental demands placed upon a NASCAR racer. Dr Maxine Gray is all-business and very aloof in her observations of Rush Jackson. Her assignment is to prove that NASCAR drivers are serious athletes, comparable to Olympic Gold Metalists. Rush fears getting involved with a woman will interfer with his focus on the track, but his warm and hospitable mother is determined to bring him and the doctor together. From a NASCAR fan perspective, I enjoyed this story and its detailed information on the athletics and training involved in the sport. However, as a romance novel, this relationship wasn't very convincing or exciting at all.
