A Keepsake for Generations of Family MembersReview Date: 2001-05-10
Serrano's book breaks down the story in a straightforward manner that children of all ages can understand and appreciate. The pictures and pop-up images are beautifully illustrated and are a whimsical touch to a magical story. The reader looks forward to every page's clever pop and pull items. The book is certainly a treasure for older family members who want to share an important piece of spiritualism of the Latino culture with their children.

Brilliant but Flawed Bio... Brilliant but Flawed LifeReview Date: 2008-02-11
WHY do most of the great stand up of the recent era consider Lenny Bruce to be the best? This book enlightens that story. Of course, the real dela is from Lenny himself, in the legendary "Carnegie Hall" concert from 1961 which is still available on CDs I think. That was Lenny at his peak, amazingly funny.
So read the book and listen to the concert. Feel the winds of laughter howl through you.

Very very funny rural humorReview Date: 2004-07-10
well--"Walter gets a stove" in which his 1920's wood-burning stove is stolen from his shack, and his neighbors take him "to town" to get a new one...I won't spoil the punch line on that one. Walter explaining how he learned to knit -- hilarious! And in "Walter gets a letter" the town council sends him an officious letter demanding that he clean up all the garbage in his yard. When his neighbor reads it to him (he can't read) Walter still doesn't understand their claim. He calmly explains the planned use of each item (junked cars, rusting farm equipment, a pile of scrap lumber, etc) in great detail. Finally, when she points out an undeniable pile of garbage described in great detail as a mound of old coffee grounds, apple peels, potato peels and so forth...he finally gets a
little bit indignant.
"That, Miss, is my Compost Heap!"

Not just for Ladies!Review Date: 2008-08-05
The articles in THE LADIES HOME JOURNAL TREASURY are an excellent window into America's and the world's past: Rudyard Kipling tells of a famine in India in the 1890s and Admiral Byrd, just back from the North Pole, gives his thoughts on what a "hero" is. Benjamin Harrison describes life in the White House, Grover Cleveland opines why Woman Suffrage would be a bad thing, Teddy Roosevelt contributes an essay on mothers and Woodrow Wilson weighs in on the Monroe Doctrine.
There's works by Helen Keller, Eleanor Roosevelt and Margaret Mead. A woman gives insight into domestic life in Nazi Germany while a man predicts in 1931 what the world would be like 10 years later. Also included are superb fiction and poetry by some most famous authors and bards. Another highlight are the many color and b&w illustrations of vintage covers and advertisements. And that's just scratching the surface of this 580 page oversized anthology. It's all quite fascinating, and highly recommended to everyone!
