A Keepsake for Generations of Family Members
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-10
Francisco Serrano's La Virgen de Guadalupe is not just a well-written historical piece for children, but a beautiful keepsake to be passed down through the generations. The book chronicles the age-old legend of how the Virgin Mary appeared to a poor indigineous boy hundreds of years ago -- an encounter that would forever alter how Catholicism was practiced in Mexico and by Latinos worldwide today. The significance of the Virgin Mary appearing to Diego was momentous. The Virgin Mary was brought to Mexico via the Spanish conquest's Catholicism. The fact that a dark-skinned Virgin Mary would appear to an indio demonstrated Catholicism's accessibility to the masses in Mexico. Mexico was able to claim a part of the conquerer's religion as their own. La Virgen de Guadalupe became Mexico's patron saint.

Serrano's book breaks down the story in a straightforward manner that children of all ages can understand and appreciate. The pictures and pop-up images are beautifully illustrated and are a whimsical touch to a magical story. The reader looks forward to every page's clever pop and pull items. The book is certainly a treasure for older family members who want to share an important piece of spiritualism of the Latino culture with their children.

Brilliant but Flawed Bio... Brilliant but Flawed Life

I have read this book twice, once in the early 70s and once in the interim. The opening chapter - which is a 'day in the life' rendition of a Bruce performance - really GETS IT. There were classic Bruce bits which I have heard or seen which Goldman for some reason shortened or chose a less effective variant, but overall, if you had never heard of Lenny Bruce when he was alive (the powers that be wanted it that way) or were born after his death in 1966, this is a window into the comedy world (and a reflection on the real world) he inhabited. He was referred to as a 'sick' comedian, as a style reference, not a slam, because he took touchy topics and both made them funny and pointed.

WHY do most of the great stand up of the recent era consider Lenny Bruce to be the best? This book enlightens that story. Of course, the real dela is from Lenny himself, in the legendary "Carnegie Hall" concert from 1961 which is still available on CDs I think. That was Lenny at his peak, amazingly funny.

So read the book and listen to the concert. Feel the winds of laughter howl through you.

scholarly yet accessible study of antebellum resorts

Lewis's short monograph is an engaging study of wealthy Southern men and women's experiences in Virginia resort communities between the American Revolution and the Civil War. Lewis's bent towards gender history is evident throughout, but she also pays careful attention to class relations, taste and gentility, medical issues, and the not-so-hidden role that slaves and slavery played in these communities. Her work is academic in tone, with frequent references to the historiography of antebellum planter society, yet the writing is clear enough and entertaining enough to make the work appealing to general readers.

This out-of-print paperback is an absolute gem. I remember it
well--"Walter gets a stove" in which his 1920's wood-burning stove is stolen from his shack, and his neighbors take him "to town" to get a new one...I won't spoil the punch line on that one. Walter explaining how he learned to knit -- hilarious! And in "Walter gets a letter" the town council sends him an officious letter demanding that he clean up all the garbage in his yard. When his neighbor reads it to him (he can't read) Walter still doesn't understand their claim. He calmly explains the planned use of each item (junked cars, rusting farm equipment, a pile of scrap lumber, etc) in great detail. Finally, when she points out an undeniable pile of garbage described in great detail as a mound of old coffee grounds, apple peels, potato peels and so forth...he finally gets a
little bit indignant.

Not just for Ladies!

THE LADIES HOME JOURNAL began as a column by Lousie Knapp in her husband's publication, TRIBUNE AND FARMER. Mrs. Knapp's writings quickly became so popular, she was given her own periodical in 1883: THE LADIES HOME JOURNAL AND PRACTICAL HOUSEKEEPER. The "Journal" has been in print continuously since then. The format and look of LHJ and even its name underwent changes over the years. The current glossy color magazine bears little editorial or content resemblance to its early-20th Century antecedent.

The articles in THE LADIES HOME JOURNAL TREASURY are an excellent window into America's and the world's past: Rudyard Kipling tells of a famine in India in the 1890s and Admiral Byrd, just back from the North Pole, gives his thoughts on what a "hero" is. Benjamin Harrison describes life in the White House, Grover Cleveland opines why Woman Suffrage would be a bad thing, Teddy Roosevelt contributes an essay on mothers and Woodrow Wilson weighs in on the Monroe Doctrine.

There's works by Helen Keller, Eleanor Roosevelt and Margaret Mead. A woman gives insight into domestic life in Nazi Germany while a man predicts in 1931 what the world would be like 10 years later. Also included are superb fiction and poetry by some most famous authors and bards. Another highlight are the many color and b&w illustrations of vintage covers and advertisements. And that's just scratching the surface of this 580 page oversized anthology. It's all quite fascinating, and highly recommended to everyone!
