I purchased this book several years ago from the Jr League of Albuquerque. I am now ordering one for my daughter. It has lots of great regional dishes from New Mexico and lots of other great dishes as well. I collect cook books and this is a great one.

A favorite of mine. My first introduction to this book was on a trip to Albuquerque many, many years ago. Since then, I have purchased 6 of these books and given 5 as gifts. Great recipes.

One thing that I particularly like about this book, which may be a surprise to some, is that not all the old fashioned *fat* ingredients have not been taken out of the recipes, and the book not entirely updated to reflect low fat "healthy" foods. I like to eat healthy but once in a while a good, old fashioned recipe with the yummy bad ingredients is just plain good. You can easily eliminate fats yourself but I enjoy the authentic recipes. I can modernize them myself.

Love this book.

My daughter loves this book

My three year old daughter loves this book. We read it once or twice every day. It is like the game telephone where the message changes as it passes person to person. The pelican sees a hippotamus and forgets what he saw and describes some sort of monster with a very silly name. Then the next animal uses another description and name and so on. All of the animals are convinced there is a big scary monster when it is only the hippo. Very cute, very silly and a great addition to your child's bookshelf.

Beware, you will need to pre-read this book to yourself before reading it aloud to a child! My preschool class has chosen this book once or twice a day since I brought it in. They wait eagerly for me to read the name of each new silly animal, laughing joyfully each time they hear about the "whoppabigamouse," "gulpawobbletusk," or the "snarlyhissopus." The pictures are delightful and colorful, and not at all scary.

This cookbook is fantastic! Because it is theme based, it is easy to use and makes party planning a snap all year round. There are many delicious recipes that include gift ideas, too. The book is beautiful, fun to browse, and leaves you with some mouth-watering ideas. The recipes are easy to prepare, and reflect the style of the whole south, not just Georgia. This cookbook makes a great gift!

I have the first edition of this book, which I have used for many years. It has some of my all-time favorite recipes (Country Captain, Apple Torte, Helen Mary's Chicken, Shrimp Dip just to name a few). These recipes were well-tested prior to the publication, and I have never found an error in the ingredient list or instructions. There are recipes for every occasion, and every one I have tried has been great. I recently bought one for my thirty-year-old son who has become interested in cooking. When I gave it to him, he laughed and said, "Oh, yes, I recognize this!" due to the many times I used it when he was growing up. This is a great addition to your collection or a great gift for anyone on your list!

I have been using this book since my Missippi Magnolia mother gave me a copy when it first came out. There's not a bad recipe in it. Even the Crispy Chicken Cassarole, which my children called "glop" is good. In fact, I'm making the Strawberries Romanoff for a get-together tomorrow night. My copy has just worn out, therefore I'm ordering a new one, make it two, one for my new daughter-in-law in NJ.

The recipes in this book are wonderful! There are recipes from Bed & Breakfasts in KY, beautiful photographs of KY, menu samples for planning gatherings, and lots of history to read. The praline cookies are out of this world, as is the swirled pecan pound cake! My husband loved the grilled sirlion in Bourbon Marinade, and I loved the corn chowder and the blueberry citrus cake. This is a great junior league cookbook - both entertaining to read and great to cook by!

I found this book filled with great ideas for my reading and writing workshops. It is probably best for someone who has already established this in their classroom. I found lots of ideas that I could use right away...or maybe tweak in a way to make it work for my students. My district purchased it...and I love it!!

Student-Centered learning is right on target

This book was very interesting, informative, and educational. Moffett and Wagner have done an excellent job of giving instructional strategies appropriate to every age group from K-12. Moffett is a visionary whose ideas were ahead of his time. The authors begin by giving a step by step guide to setting up a classroom geared toward student centered learning. The book has three sections, orientation, basic processes, and kinds of discourse. The orientation portion helps the reader to become familiar with student centered learning. The basic processes give different methods of engaging students in activities where they are the center and not the teacher. The book linked reading, spelling, and writing. Moffett and Wagner believe that reading, spelling, listening, and thinking are major determinants to learning to communicating effectively. The section kinds of discourse give innumerable ideas on facilitating the effective use of language arts throughout the curriculum. I would suggest this book for anyone looking to enhance instruction for their students in the classroom or children at home.

As a teacher of language arts for 30 years I could not have survived without this book, which is periodically updated. It has been my bible for teaching language arts and given me not just techniques, but enthusiasm and energy for teaching. My students have certainly profited due to this volume. My most academically-talented students (based on standardized tests), who can be the most critical of a teacher, and who are now in senior high school and even college have chosen me FOUR times--an accolade as rare as hen's teeth--as THE "teacher who made a difference," to be placed in WHO'S WHO AMONG AMERICA'S TEACHERS. I certainly owe much to co-authors James Moffett and Betty Jane Wagner, the latter who has written many other books for teachers.

Take Charge is an important book with big ideas for parents as well as all school personnel that have a stake in children's well-being. It is inspiring and informative with real suggestions to empower parents to team with schools to provide safe, fair, consistent, moral, stimulating and creative schools. JoAnn Shaheen and Carolyn Spence have gracefully shared their immense knowledge and understanding of children and schools to make this world a better place for all of us.

This very fine book details how a school curriculum relates to, supports, and ultimately teaches values. Take Charge shows how a school encourages curiosity, and protects children. It details what a parent should and can expect from a school. This book is filled with fine anecdotal stories and children's writing to illustrate its points. It is a must-read for parents and, I'd say, teachers and administrators.

I already had the original A Taste of Georgia cookbook and love it. So I was delighted when I discovered that the same organization had published Another Serving. This cookbook has it all, grill hints, low fat recipes, childrens section, etc. I especially like the Georgia Caviar on page 40 (so good I know the page number by heart) and the English Toffee recipe in the candy section. Also a favorite is the excepts from old "manners" books...always a good laugh. This cookbook has been a great addition to my kitchen.

It's no surprise to me that this cookbook is still going strong. When I still lived in Newnan,Ga it was a popular cookbook and had been around for at least 12 years in different versions. I received a copy of the latest version in 1990. I was a novice cook and needed all the help I could get. This cookbook has been with me for 13 years, several kitchens, and was one of the first I packed to move overseas. This has not only recipes, but also all kinds of conversions, substitutions, and my copy had party manners (LOL) and proper table setting. It even had a listing of Mrs. Alan Jackson as a member for you country Music fans. This cookbook only gets better with age and revisions. Buy this and get recipes from all over the world, not just southern items.

Best Book Available about How to Get All Students Reading

Review Date: 2002-07-09
Before I coordinated an early literacy project for inner city students, I knew that improving the reading achievement of students in high-poverty, low-performing schools was going to be difficult and take every resource and skill my colleagues and I had. Even knowing that reality, it wasn't until a year after we'd rolled up our shirt sleeves and started working in three urban schools, that we TRULY understood the effort behind maintaining fine-tuned curriculum coordination, retaining the ability to duck sudden blockades from administration, and motivating teachers to keep employing the continual academic press needed to develop students' reading and language skills.

Elaine McEwan's new book, "Teach Them All to Read: Catching the Kids Who Fall Through the Cracks," is the first book I've come across that truly captures all the necessary ingredients needed to create a reading culture where every student learns to read. I always enjoy McEwan's vivid metaphors and chatty practical tips which won't disappoint in her latest book. Thematically, McEwan uses jigsaw puzzle imagery to help the reader understand the necessary role of phonological awareness, phonics, spelling, reading a lot, a reading culture, language, fluency, knowledge, and cognitive strategies. But wait - this is far more than a book providing information about effective teaching of reading.

In addition to her years as a principal who dramatically increased reading performance in her school, McEwan draws upon her years of experience crisscrossing the country to consult with school districts attempting to turn around their reading programs surround by a mishmash of misinformation from the reading establishment that hurls at them from all directions. A strength of this book is her intimate experience with Best Practices that often have no research substantiation.

I should mention that I'm not totally impartial about this book and have been eagerly waiting for it to come out in print since our literacy project was used as one example of a comprehensive program, with interview quotes from some of our staff. Those of you who enjoy reading Consumer member Nettie Griffin's commentary and descriptions of her teaching, will also find a section of this book highlighting her teaching.

These are my three favorite sections of the book:
1. The section that identifies common fallacies in the teaching of reading that frequently surface, boldly exposes myths that have no research basis. I wish that my local whole language curriculum director would read about two of her favorite myths: "The Three-Cueing System: A Genuine Urban Myth" and "The Fat Cat Sat on the Rat is Borrrring and Bad for Kids"

2. The comprehensive chapter entitled: "Fluency: The Forgotten Piece of the Puzzle" is a must-read!

3. "Why Can't we Just Drop Everything and Read?" details what McEwan calls "reading in the zone," or the intersection between (a) reading a lot and (b) reading at an appropriate or somewhat challenging level of difficulty, and (c) reading with accountability.

McEwan set forth the following goals in the preface and these should provide more information on the book in its totality:
1. To give you a short course in the most current reading research regarding how students learn to read, regardless of age or grade, so that you can make informed decisions about curriculum and instruction.
2. To help you understand that learning to read is only the first step: students must also develop fluency, acquire cognitive strategies, and continue to read a lot to deepen their knowledge and understanding.
3. To focus your attention on the variables at work in your school and district that can be altered to create a reading culture and make a huge difference in reading achievement-especially for those students who are currently falling through the cracks
4. To convince you of the power that rests in you and your colleagues to teach every child to read.

Read and enjoy. Mary Damer
