This book, and its previous editions are amazing. The only textbook I've actually used from college. This is my second purchase
of this book, because the first was so used and loved it fell apart. In fact I couldn't be without it! The science department
of the private school, in which I work, is planning to buy it so they have it as a copy for their curriculum planning. It
has an outline of data for EVERY concept/topic in Science eduation.

Any teacher of science, K-12, or science teacher educators at the university level should have this in their professional
library. It takes instructional theory and transforms it into practical language that a teacher can use NOW in his or her
classroom. It advocates the teaching of science as science is practiced. Of particular enjoyment are the chapters on the
Learning Cycle. This book was indispenable in my Ph.D. research.

Lawson is a well-known researcher of science teaching. The sciences are characterised by both process and body of knowledge,
and Lawson's practical guidelines bring science teaching and the process of science together. The thesis is that science
exemplifies a thinking process which can and must be taught. Lawson provides methods and practical examples, backed with
research to achieve this. We have prescribed the book for both introductory and final year student teachers, and there is
enough material to continue to inspire students at both these levels. If one is looking for a research-backed, "grown-up"
guideline for teachers of biology, physical sciences and any experimental science - this is it.

THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS by C. S. Lewis

Review Date: 2008-01-27
Review Date: 2008-01-27
The Screwtape Letters is Lewis's classic collection of diabolical correspondence. In it, a senior devil gives continued advice
to his protégé on how best to tempt his victim and keep him from salvation.
Lewis does not propose any concrete doctrine on devils here, and this is not his point. Rather he focuses on highlighting the ways, both large and small, that Christians are distracted from God. Lewis explores the dangers of not being purposeful toward God and life, as well as what happens to people when they give in to temptation.
The book is presented as a collection of letters, all from Screwtape to Wormwood. But Lewis does a good job of making the conversation not feel one-sided, and he does a fantastic job with the devils' personalities. In fact the book is rather deeper than this, as there are two other plots going on. First is the fate of Wormwood's man. Second is the relationship between the devils, and the fate of Wormwood.
The Screwtape Letters is deeper than it appears, and is thoroughly thought-provoking. Most every reader will find elements in it to which he or she can relate. Christians of all maturity levels can benefit from this book.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

"The best way to drive out the devil, if he will not yield to texts of Scripture, is to jeer and flout him, for he cannot
bear scorn." -- Luther
"The devill... that prowde spirite... cannot endure to be mocked." -- Thomas More
Here Lewis does his best to make fun of the devil by means of an imagined exchange of letters between an "apprentice" devil and his mentor, an old seasoned demon named Screwtape. The letters tell as much about human beings as they do about the wiles of the devil, and have been justly famous and loved by Christians since their first publication in 1943.

This is old-fashioned story telling at its finest, reminding me why so few books manage to stick in my head these days. The
best books are great because they are truly creative, as opposed to predictable and mundane.
Of course, Joan Aiken's gift is for making the ordinary extraordinary. A family called the Armitages lives in a house where magical things tend to happen, often--but not always--on Mondays. Mark and Harriet and their parents simply keep an eye out for such happenings, participating with true British aplomb as well as gusto. It's a place where your great-uncle's mythic apple might attract the Greek Furies to your basement, your parents might be turned into ladybugs, or a quince tree might be stolen by a lady journalist who is also a witch. Where you might be asked to raise a baby griffin, which sounds like fun until you discover just how much the creatures can eat. Where little people prove to be much more grubby and querulous than Mary Norton's Borrowers, and where cutting a puzzle off the back of a cereal box may lead you to a spell that has trapped someone inside for a century.
Most of the stories are funny, and some of them are poignant. Any child who loves the Narnia books and isn't locked into sitcom-type story telling will find that Joan Aiken's Serial Garden is the real thing--a fantasy book that leaves you saying, "Ahhhh" after you finish it.
Joan Aiken is best known for The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, one of my favorite books as a child (and as an adult). But if you want to find out how to handle two druids fighting in your backyard over a bathmat woven of beard hair, you really should read The Serial Garden.

I was a bit skeptical when I heard about these because I'm not a big reader of short stories (sorry!) and so loved Aiken's
children's novels that I didn't think these would hold up. Well, they do more than hold up. They are absolutely magical! Really.
The Armitage family comes out of the tradition of families like those of Nesbit or Eager. There was for me even a tinge of
the Peterkins in these stories (though, I assure you that these folks are not nearly as bumbling and there is no lady from
Philadelphia to bail them out). The humor, often involving magic gone wrong, is in the vein of Diana Wynne Jones. There are
sad moments too, say the one of the poor music teacher and another involving a baby goblin.I guess this is what is sometimes
called domestic fantasy, stuff that happens with this family, in their small village that just seems to have witches, unicorns,
and other magical stuff in the daily life of the place and people. Highly recommended.

Now in an revised, updated, and expanded second edition, Serious Players In The Primary Classroom: Empowering Children Through
Active Learning Experiences offers insight into the Selma Wassermann (Professor Emerita in the Faculty of Education at Simon
Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada) ideas for instructional approach: "Play-Debrief-Replay". This is a method for structuring
curriculum experiences so as to promote children's active learning in cooperative groups and fostering independent thinking.
A theoretical framework for implementing teaching for thinking in primary classrooms is provided, along with updated references
and a new chapter on moral dilemmas. Serious Players In The Primary Classroom is an impressive, "user friendly" contribution
to primary classroom curriculum development and teaching strategies.
Children are natural learners-teach them with respect

I've been a kindergarten teacher for thirteen years. I pride myself on teaching with research-based methods which, above
all, honor the developmental levels of children and their amazing ability to construct knowledge through play. I believe
a teacher's job is to facilitate this natural learning through carefully structured, inviting exploratory play experiences.
This book was one of the most influential when I was studying to be a teacher...in fact, I still refer to it occasionally
and lend it to new teachers. It is based on the idea that all people need personal empowerment, and that with it, conflicts
and the need to control others diminish (children and adults alike). It also suggests that the creative force minimizes the
destructive one, and offers many practical ways, across the curriculum and including classroom management, to teach with these
concepts in mind. It deals with concerns such as, "Won't it be too noisy?" and "How will I cover the curriculum?" It utilizes
the research of Dewey and Piaget and for each activity, lists Concepts, Learning Goals, Thinking Operations and Materials.
There are suggestions for helping children to reflect on their observations and for challenging their thinking. We are encouraged
to remember that children who cultivate the art of play are likely to develop self-initiating behaviors, capacity for risk-taking,
and inventiveness which will serve them all their lives. A teacher is more than someone who follows a lesson plan. Learn
the art of teaching with this fabulous book!

however, it needs to be read and acted upon. It will not stop until we all stand up and do what needs to be done.

I love reading. Fantasy, historical fiction, whatever: you name it, I've probably read it. My favorite kinds of books are
stories about real teens just like you and me. After getting hooked into the amazingly realistic Degrassi: The next generation
and watching the episode "Father Figure", I decided to read this book.
This is the best of the Degrassi Jr. High series books. They are downright amazing and realistic. If you've seen Degrassi: The next generation, you'll know about Emma and Spike. Shane, the character in this book, is Emma's dad. He's just a normal kid, struggling to survive in a messed-up world, just like we all are. When he gets his girlfriend pregnant, he is faced with the consequences.
If you've seen the episode Father Figure, you know Emma hasn't seen him for 11 years. Why, you might ask?
I don't want to give away the ending of this amazing book. So why not go out and read it yourself? I promise, you won't regret it.
So, signing off. Maybe I'm done blabbing about this book, and I hope I've convinced you to buy it. It's amazing! It really deals with the life of a teenager, just like you, or me.

OK, Let me first say that this is the BEST degrassi kid book ever. Shane was barely a story line in Degrassi but thanks to
the author of this book we learn so much about Shane. How insecure he is. How sheltered his life is and how he lets people
influence him over the edge. Shane was a good kid. Church going, quiet and a loner, until he gets Spike pregnant. After that
his whole life turns upside down and inside out. Shane doesn't know how to handle it all, he just wants to be a good kid.
But now that he is going to become a father his parents think the worst of him. Shane gets into some sticky situations. Will
he be able to handle life as a father and son? You'll see!

This was good, but in the middle was kida boring with Artie. Merlin is a great character and my favorite character Gingy in
in it more. I think Shrek is doing better with the beggining and end, but now they have to work on the middle. Donkey and
Puss are still in it alot. Girls,Princess Fiona isnt in it to much if you ask me. They could easily cut her out from the
book! A good guy dies. Dragon,6 babies from the Shrek 2 credits, pigs, wolf, poop scoopers, lies,no blind mice aww.But still
a great book!
