Phenomenal Art & Clever Picture Holes in this classic tale

This book has amazing drawings in it. Carol Jones is very talented. I rarely write reviews for books but this one has definitely impressed me. Not only are the pictures breathtaking, but many of the pages have a circular hole cut out of the middle so you get a peek at the next animal coming up in the tale, and when you look back at the previous page from the other side, you see Old MacDonald. This is truly a gem of a book. My highest praises to the illustrator!

My daughters loved it!

My daughters loved it they go around asking for their E-I-E-I-O book all day long. They even ask to take it to bed. Many fights have been waged between my twins over who will get the honors.

I like the little windows on the pages which give a little away, but not too much, of the animal that is on the farm. Nicely illustrated!

My son loved the detail in this book!

A simple premise for a book...a familiar nursery rhyme song, but Carol Jones has given it a new life with her strikingly detailed illustrations. My son (4) really loves discovering the minute touches she added...a great book to sit and look through together. Definitely one we'll keep!

This new cookbook is a pleasure to own, whether you are a person who spends a lot of time in the kitchen or whether you prefer to prepare something delicious but simple. The recipes are professionally presented and very easy to follow.

When I received my book, I curled up in a comfortable chair to read some of the recipes and to enjoy the beautiful pictures. The book is so attractive and so appealing that I've put in on my list of gifts to give to a few special people.

Awesome cookbook!!!

When I read Harry Potter I couldn't stop thinking about Peter Graves. This book is adventure, science fiction, coming-of-age. A beautifully written and illustrated story of a boy and a misunderstood inventor who defy gravity. Hugely clever and funny.

A science fiction story about _marketing?_

Review Date: 1999-12-12

The central story revolves around the eccentric, yet kindly inventor Furlong, and the mischievous yet responsible Peter Graves, who must somehow find a way to _make money_ out of Furlong's amazing invention.

Suppose that all _you_ had to work with was six golf-ball sized lumps of an amazing antigravity alloy, with an upward pull of fifty pounds each... And no time to make more or interest a big company in the invention. How could _you_ use them somehow to earn $40,000 in one summer?

The incredible combination of whimsical fantasy and prosaic down-to-earth realism... the incredible story that sort of rambles in a picaresque way... wonderful for reading aloud because every chapter stands on its own, but a page-turner all the same... and an almost unique blending of illustration and story. It is NOT an illustrated story; it is NOT a series of captioned pictures; the two work together.

And I didn't even tell you about the game of follow-the-leader, with Peter trying to shake off his followers by taking them to various risky places (with dramatic point-of-view perspective illustrations from the top of a suspension bridge...) Or the mysterious, menacing, Llewellyn Pierpont Boopfaddle. Or the professional wrestler Lord Ivan Big Bulk and the lightweight luggage competition, with a prize to be awarded for the piece of luggage that can stand Lord Ivan jumping on it three times...

An excellent book!

I read this book about 25 years ago, more or less, and I still remember it like it was yesterday. A marvelous mix of adventure, fantasy, and suspense, with a light touch of science fiction. One of the many reasons I loved this story was because the plot, while wonderfully zany, just never stopped moving forward. The story follows the exploits of Peter Graves, a rather swashbuckling youngster, as he meets the inventor Houghton Furlong and becomes embroiled in a scheme to raise a huge amount of money in very little time. Peter is the kind of kid we all would like to have been (and some of us may have come close), but what's magical about this book is the way in which DuBois (the author) takes a fantastic plot point - Furlong's inventions - and presents them as feasible and believable concepts. This story works with a minimal suspension of disbelief, and it's a pity that it's out of print. By all means, look for this title. You'll thank yourself for the effort expended to obtain this book. A truly worthwhile read - funny, exciting, memorable characters and scenes, and an otherworldly "feel" that is reminiscent of the Narnia books or the world of Willy Wonka. Fabulous storytelling - quirky sensibility - great fun!

I'm somewhat a book nut when it comes to golf and this is without a doubt the best one I've read. Very easy to read and understand. The specific golf shots covered helped me tremendously - especially short game shots. If you only buy one golf book, make it this one!

After reading this book and putting in practice what I learned, I felt I had to come back here and post a comment on it. Let me tell you that this book became my Bible on golf. I have shown it to some of my golf friends and ALL of them ordered one. Even my brother who is handicap 2 and a golf fanatic ordered one. Mike covers ALL aspects of the golf swing: grip, stance, movement, etc. The comparison of the Classic and Modern swings is very well done and his tips, believe me, help a lot! If you had many golf professionals teaching you different things, you need a reference. I made this book my own.

The best overall golf instruction book I've ever seen!

I've been playing golf for over 25 years and this book has had THE most profound impact on my game. Coverage of the fundamentals is strong, but the parts that really made a difference were the chapters on the short game, including pitching, chipping, putting, and sand. The pitching and chipping techniques presented here are simple to learn and easy to remember. Best of all they helped me shave many strokes from my score!

Bonnie Mickelson, the editor, was promoting this little book at I. Magnin's in San Francisco in 1980 and I am so grateful that I happened to be in the store that day. I purchased copies for my mother and myself having a soft spot for Junior League cookbooks. This one is very good. While slight with only 110 recipes, they are well chosen and have been tested. It has been over 25 years since I bought this book and I still turn to it--especially for entertaining for large crowds. The Beef Bourguignon for 24 is easy and very good. Easier than Julia Child's and just as good. Serving it with Hungarian Noodles, as suggested, always gets raves and requests for the recipe. The Barley and Pine Nut Pilaf is easy and wonderful with beef and lamb. The Frozen Mocha Mousse made with ladyfingers, which turns it into a charlotte, is very, very good and serves a large crowd and is impressive to look at. There was a follow-up volume that I suspect is a collection of recipes that just didn't seem good enough to make it the first time around. I use that book too, but not as often. The drawings by Linda Newberry are very charming.

A delight for many senses - taste, touch and sight

I received my copy of Private Collection today and I've just ordered another copy of this delightful cookbook as a Christmas gift for a dear friend. The recipes are elegant - the Avocado Crab Mornay sang on our tongues tonight. It isn't just the food that sings in this cookbook, the paper begs to be touched, and the illustrations are exquisite.

The instructions are easy to follow and the results impressive in appearance and flavor. If you need a few recipes to cook when you really want to impress someone, use these cook books. You won't fail.

Of all of my cookbooks that I have collected over the years, this is one that I turn to time after time... it is one of my all-time favorites! The recipes are super and I can always find inspiration when I need something yummy and special. Try the "Flawless Hollandaise" and you will be assured that this recipe alone is worth the price of the book! (I'll be making Eggs Benedict for New Years Day brunch using that recipe and will, once again, get raves from my guests!)

The Right Number of Elephants

Review Date: 2005-10-14
The Right Number of Elephants is as silly as an elephant driving a car. First, each page helps the child count from ten to one by illustrating it with whimsical pictures of elephants doing everyday activities. Second, learning to count is a very important skill for young readers. Third, mixing fantasy with reality is a very good combination. For example, getting ten elephants to block the sun at the beach is ridiculous. If your child is having trouble with counting, this is the right book for them.

My 20 month old son LOVES elephants, and when my grandmother gave him a copy of this book we could hardly read all of it because he was excitedly shouting A ELEPHANT! over and over again. The reason I'm looking it up here is because we literally wore out our first copy. I like the book because it's different, and cute without being cutesy. The illustrations are fabulous. I highly recommend it to anyone.

This is a fun, imaginative counting book, great for young children (2-4). "If you suddenly need to pull a train out of a tunnel and save everyone on board, then the right number of elephants is 10." It counts down to one elephant as a "very special friend." Very nice, and cute illustrations.

This was a great book especially for young girls. It tells the story of a female hero and all her adventures. Even after marrying Davy Crockett, one of the most famous folk hero's, Sally Ann remains independent and the greatest hero in the book. I highly recomend it to anyone, especially those interested in folk tales.

Steven Kellogg is wonderful telling the story of Sally Ann from her birth, her running, and the bear battle, to meeting and marrying Davey Crockett. Very strong woman. This folklore tale has excellent color illustrations. I would highly recommend this one for reading to and by the K through the 8th grade, along with a recommendation for teachers and parents, also.

This is my favorite and most cherished cookbook even though I am a Virginian and this is a decidedly Californian cookbook. I picked up by chance in a used bookstore and began making recipes from it and was soon quite impressed. After 5 years, I have yet to find a bad recipe in the book. Furthermore, the recipes are elegant and somewhat fancy while not being too out of the mainstream or too exotic -- or too difficult for that matter. Interestingly, many of the recipes in here have become "standards" (Khalhua pie, baked brie, Indonesian rice salad) with variations on them popping up in other cookbooks and on the web. These are the original, simple versions that first began to define California cooking. You'll enjoy this.

This is a standout among communtity/fundraiser cookbooks. The format is clean and easy to follow. Ingredients are in bold type and consistant throughout. Instructions are clearly written, steps are not omited and they are not too wordy. Each section is clearly named with the "cute" name saved for the second page of the section (ie: SOUP chapter is also named Mendocino) and includes a written description of the region and it's food history.

Some of our favorite recipes are from this book. The "Mustard Chicken in Phyllo" is an easy to make ahead dinner party favorite. The soups are amazing. The "Red Pepper Soup" is easy to make and delicious as is the "Black Bean Soup con Salsa". The "Soupe de Poisson" is more complicated to make but well worth the effort; with a salad and bread it is the perfect summer dinner to delight your friends. The "Kaluha Cinnamon Raisin Rolls" are one of my brunch staples.

This makes the perfect shower gift along with The Silver Palate Cookbook and The Frog Commissary Cookbook.

What a Great Cookbook!
