I first came across the Petit Nicolas stories while in French IV. All the people in my class, including me, greatly enjoyed these stories. They are true classics. While easy to read, they give the reader an acute sense of how French is actually used - in context. the tales are engaging and Petit Nicolas acts and thinks so much like all little kids that any cultural differences displayed in the book are easily understood through his eyes. I greatly enjoy these books, especially this one, and highly recommend them to everyone who wishes to read in French. They are not only for children and learners of French, they are for anyone no matter what their age and ability in French. A very good buy!

Excellent starting point for students of French

This book is a great way for beginning students of French to improve their skills while also getting an introduction to French children's literature. The language is simple enough for a beginner, and the stories are funny without being juvenile. The illustrations by Sempé can only be described as masterful; they fit perfectly with the atmosphere of the stories. I first saw Sempé's work in "Die Geschicte von Herrn Sommer" by Patrick Süßkind, and I continue to be amazed and amused by his work. I would recommend this book (and presumably the rest of the Petit Nicolas series, which I have not yet read) to anyone who is looking for a way to read "real" French literature while improving their basic French skills.

What an excellent resource for any teacher. The activities are interesting and thought-provoking. My students were so excited about creating their very own books!

Holistic learning experience for the child.

An excellent presentation of the holistic learning experience book arts can be for the child. Creating a book calls upon skills that will stand the child in good stead throughout life: planning, collaborating, discussing, consensus building. Also, technological, writing, visual, and design skills are challenged and strengthened.

Out of the KAGILIAN education books I've bought in the past decade or so, this one is so practical. The examples given are useful for almost any age and are broken down in 3 categories (pre-reading, during reading, post-reading). This book has really good ideas.

This book is a required text for an Elementary Literacy course I'm taking. It contains a variety of reading activities with excellent examples, and it would make a terrific resource for teachers who want to make reading more engaging, improve comprehension, and encourage stimulating discussions. I will definitely be using this book often in the classroom.

How and why kids think as they do

Review Date: 2007-09-15
This is a great book for science teachers (and parents of kids). The three main sections, "Children's ideas about life and living processes," "...about materials and their properties," and "...about physical processes" are well researched and documented. The book examines the models that children develop in their structuring of the world, then addresses how educators can support those pieces that are correct and work to re-structure those that are incorrect.

A must for all high school science teachers!

This book should accompany any science text book because it is a reality check for teachers. The research is clear and comprehensive - no holds barred! After reading it from cover to cover I immediately modified my teaching practice. I reassessed my assumptions about what students know and can do then and changed course. I have a greater appreciation for my students' views and misconceptions and now my job is to steer them straight - or better still, to coach them to construct their own science knowledge and skills.

I read the book that my classmates and I worked so hard to create. We were really excited to publish this book so our best works were presented in here. I think that we did a great job especially with the poetry. Writing under a broad topic allowed imagination to expand. We wrote about our own lives and shared them with different people. We really wanted others to be able to relate to the book. The stories present life in new perspectives. I think that this book really shows what tennagers are capable of. This is a great start for our school. I hope that other schools will follow our example.

STUDENT WRITING FROM A GREAT SCHOOL!

Metamorphik is a collection of poems and stories by students from Northbrook Jr.High, grades six through eight. I attend that school, and know many of the featured authors, though I did not submit any of my own work. I highly enjoyed the poetry, it was beautiful and in some cases very touching. The prose was more clearly student work, but exellent none the less. This book provides an exeptional window into students' thoughts, but each student's voice is unique. I found the writing styles highly reflective of each person, each piece a picture of a different person. All procedes from the sale of this book go to benifit a NBJH student, now in high school, who was injured in a sledding accident, and paralyzed from the neck down!

A Truly Wonderful Book

This book is one that is still near and dear to my heart, more than 18 years later. It's a simple, sweet tale that my mother read to me (and then I would later read to her) countless times before bed, but it's one that leaves you with a pleasant, satisfied feeling. It's almost magical. Its simplicity is what makes it so very endearing, and I myself would always dream about how delightful it must feel to sit upon a warm, freshly baked pie.

It's never a good idea to begin a review of one book by lambasting a completely different book. But then, I'm not too keen on good ideas. When I look at the beautiful beautiful book that is, "Minerva Louise", I am astonished by its simplicity. It's fabulous how with only a few well chosen lines, author/illustrator Janet Morgan Stoeke is able to create something as perfect as this little book. Compare this with other awful and simplistic books ("Where's Spot?" anyone?) and this becomes even more of a monumental accomplishment than it originally appeared.

The story's just as simple as the pictures. One day the sweet chicken Minerva Louise (who greatly admires the farmhouse) decides that it might be a good idea if she poked her head in and looked around. Once inside she gathers all sorts of odd ideas. A flowerpot of daisies is reduced to flattened flowers when Minerva takes it for a comfortable chair. The sleeping cat? A friendly cow, of course. In her barnyard-mindedness a tricycle is a tractor and a flower coverlet on a bed is a meadow. After further examinations (and unintentional chicken mischief) Minerva decides that she would prefer to live in the yard but that she'll visit the house. In a final panel, Minerva sits contentedly on a pie on the windowsill, "because she loved the house with the red curtains".

And I love Minerva. There just aren't enough worthy chicken protagonists in picture books today. Moreover, there aren't enough picture books that tell a straightforward story with the wit and storytelling skills found in this little marvel. I know I'm gushing over this thing, but it's one of those books you need to see firsthand to understand. Minerva's so amiable that if she was your chicken I'm sure you'd bake pies with the sole purpose of letting her sit on them. This is a very early reader book, and it will make a much loved addition to any child laden home. If I could recommend a single picture book published in the last 20 years with all my heart and soul, it would be the sweet, "Minerva Louise". Miss it, and you're missing out.

Minerva Louise is the chicken version of Amelia Bedelia, and ideal for the youngest children -- the art is bright and bold, the humor very obvious and accessible.

especially if Mr. Slow is Mr. Busy's neighbor!!!

Poor Mr. Slow just wants to take things... well, slow. But alas a rather busy and obtrusive Mr. Busy is determined to speed up his slow ways. After getting cleaned up, eating breakfast, and cutting the grass (all by 7am!) he decides to go on a picnic. So he goes into Mr. Slow's house, up to his room and wakes him up to go on his picnic. They end up eating in Mr. Slow's front lawn as well... Mr. Slow was too slow to get to the picnic grounds. Then Mr. Busy informs his slow neighbor that tomorrow they will get up a 6am!!!
At 6am Mr. Busy rushes into Mr. Slow's bedroom to find... nobody. Nobody at all. So off Mr. Busy goes leaving a happy snoring Mr. Slow asleep under the bed!!!

I received this cookbook as a wedding shower gift in 1990. I've tried many of the recipes and have had wonder "feed" back. Now when I go to family get-togethers or company pot-lucks, people ask me to bring certain dishes from this book. I found the recipes to be easy, elegant and delicious. Note: My edition (1989)does not have calorie or nutritional break downs.

We still have our copy of "Nutbread and Nostalgia" from 1979 - the binding is ripped away, pages are rough on the edges, and my Mom still uses it all the time (she keeps it wrapped with a rubber band to keep it together).
I am SO happy to see that it's still in print - we were going to try to photocopy the entire book and re-bind it, but now I can just purchase a brand new one for my Mom!
There are probably about twelve recipes in here that became family favorites... I look forward to having a new copy for myself as well.

With four children my twin sister did a lot of cooking while they were all home. On our birthday, I would always give her a cookbook as we both like to "read" cookbooks and cook too. "Nutbread and Nostalgia" was purchased from a small kitchen store in Astoria, OR in 1987. I was having dinner with a friend at a nearby restaurant when I picked this gem of a cookbook out for my sister. I must have stood there for a long time looking at the various recipes (a sign that I am enthralled with the content). When it came to our birthday, I received a copy of the same book from my friend. What a treasure!

This book is filled with sepia toned photographs from the turn of the century and includes menu ideas and recipes of "comfort" food that I am sure you will enjoy.
