The Junior League of Tampa
... a culinary collection
"Food is at the core of what connects us," states Tampa's Junior League. "No party is out of our reach," with skillful planning, creative make-ahead recipes and fun menu selections. The basic object, they state, is to spend less time in the kitchen and more time with your guests. They provide some creative twists on classic recipes.
This 127-page book is divided into: Parties, Preludes, Sideliners, Main Events and Grand Finales. Here and there are little Etiquette squibs, always helpful in changing times. Here are just a few:
§ One Prelude is Grouper Cakes with Tartar Sauce - an delicious Florida take on Maryland Crab Cakes.
§ Smoked Salmon Brushetta with Fennel and Goat Cheese is a menu from Tampa'a Mise en Place Restaurant.
§ Sassy Salsa combines black beans, corn, cilantro cumin tomatoes avocados and chiles.
§ Delicate Gazpacho Blanco contains yogurt, sour cream, peppers, parsley and light spicing.
§ Bunco Jumble is a crazy candy or salty snacks of Ritz peanut butter sandwich crackers, peanuts pretzels and M & M's.
§ Pirate's Milk Punch is a concoction of sour mash bourbon, French brandy, vodka, vanilla, whole milk and nutmeg.
§ Sideliners include Linguine Al Granchio con Salsa Rosa from Caffe Paradiso includes plum tomatoes, lump crab meat, clam juice and heavy cream
§ Pesto Green Beans involves fresh basil, pecans and of course green beans.
§ Great for New Year's brunch or a Bucs tailgate party is Jalapeno Cheese Grits with lots of butter, eggs and hot jalapenos. Pina Colada Muffins sideline well with these grits.
§ Main Event White Bean Chicken Chili is a hearty collection of the beans with green chiles, oregano and chicken beasts served with Cheddar cheese and sour cream.
§ Arroz con Pollo Salada with Tomato Garlic Mayonnaise is a memorable combination of long rich, ham, green beans and chicken.
§ A "to die for" could be the Pears in Mascarpone Custard. Simple to make and bakes for only 20 minutes.
§ Another Grand meal finisher is Calypso Pie made with coffee ice cream Kahlua, slivered almonds in a graham cracker crust topped with a rich chocolate sauce.
§ What is a Butterscotch Sundae Martini? It's Godiva white chocolate liqueur, butterscotch schnapps, Frangelico amaretto, premium vodka in a chilled martini glass.

From "Little Women" to "Good Wives"Review Date: 2004-11-28
The four March girls -- practical Meg, rambunctious Jo, sweet Beth and childish artist Amy -- live in genteel poverty with their mother Marmee; their father is away in the Civil War. Despite having little money, the girls keep their spirits up with writing, gardening, homemade plays, and the occasional romp with wealthier pals. Their pal, "poor little rich boy" Laurie, joins in and becomes their adoptive brother, as the girls deal with Meg's first romance, Beth's life-threatening illness, and fears for their father's safety.
The second half of the book opens with Meg's wedding (if not to the man of her dreams, then to the man she loves). Things rapidly go awry after the wedding, when Laurie admits his true feelings to Jo -- only to be rejected. Distraught, he leaves; Amy also leaves on a trip to Europe with a picky old relative. Despite the deterioration of Beth's health, Jo makes her way into a job as a governess, seeking to put her treasured writing into print -- and finds her destiny as well.
There's a clearly autobiographical tone to "Little Women." Not surprising -- the March girls really are like the girls next door. Alcott wrote them with flaws and strengths, and their misadventures -- like Amy's embarrassing problem with her huge lobster -- have the feeling of authenticity. How much of it is real? A passage late in the book portrays Alcott -- in the form of Jo -- "scribbling" down the book itself, and getting it published because it feels so real and true.
Sure, usually classics are hard to read. But "Little Women" is mainly daunting because of its length; the actual stories flow nicely and smoothly. Don't think it's just a book for teenage girls, either -- adults and boys can appreciate it as well. There's something for everyone: drama, romance, humor, sad and happy endings alike.
Alcott's writing itself is nicely detailed. While certain items are no longer in common use (what IS a charabanc anyway?), Alcott's stories themselves seem very fresh and could easily be seen in a modern home. And as nauseating as "heartwarming" stories sometimes are, these definitely qualify. Sometimes, especially in the beginning, Alcott is a bit too preachy and hamhanded. But her touch becomes defter as she writes on.
Jo is the quintessential tomboy, and the best character in the book: rough, gawky, fun-loving, impulsive, with a love of literature and a mouth that is slightly too big. Meg's love of luxury adds a flaw to the "perfect little homemaker" image, and Beth just avoids being shown as too saintly. Amy is an annoying little brat throughout much of the first half of the book, but by her teens she's almost as good as Jo.
"Little Women" is one of those rare classic novels that is still relevant, funny, fresh and heartbreaking today. Louisa May Alcott's best-known novel is a magnificent achievement.

In addition, the introduction by Susan Cheever is first-rate; it is neither too long or too short, and she beautifully ties it to her own experience without being cloying.
Another reason why I so highly recommend this edition is because there is a glossary at the back to explain some of the obscure (to modern readers) terms and obsolete slang. Also, there's a nice essay/review by G.K. Chesterson, who warmly praises Alcott's book.

The "Merck Manual" of EducationReview Date: 2008-12-26
The book speaks with authority on nearly all important areas of instruction. For instance, whereas many popular books and articles repeat the myth that classroom rewards undermine student interest, G&B note that the research consistently shows that praise and other rewards are very beneficial when used properly. And while many teachers believe that high expectations magically transform students, G&B make it clear that it is what teachers do, not what they expect, that helps students learn.
College texts are seldom the sort of book that people turn to for a quick, entertaining read during vacation. However, as college texts go this one is well written and interesting, and it should be read by all teachers and kept on their shelves and referred to frequently.
Hmmm...Intriguing...Review Date: 2007-04-21
Wonderful. Dewey would be so satisfied by this.
Everything else you could need is included from theory to practical vignettes to handling specific classroom issues (not just behavioral).
It could have used pictures--it didn't have any--,but we can't always have what we want.
The information is wonderful sans the pics. Please check it out!

So, so, so many pictures and graphics to interact with in this book!!! Sperry Smith's math early childhood book may do the same at a smaller price, but this book out does everyone else in terms of "showing AND telling".
The best part about this book is how it chooses to see science and math as inseparable concepts. I love that idea because children will eventually see this connection when they get to middle and high school math, science, biology, physics, and chemistry classes. Why not start the connecting process during the early childhood years?
If you can swallow the near $100 price, this book will do well...otherwise your safe with Sperry Smith's more economical text.

There's one thing they can agree on, though. Mighty MoJo is the most awesome superhero ever. And when they discover the secret behind MoJo's identity, and are given his superpowers to fight evil, you'd think the arguing between Joey and Mona would stop.
But it doesn't, until they realize they'll have to work together to use MoJo's powers to protect the world.
MO AND JO: FIGHTING TOGETHER FOREVER is the perfect book to introduce children to comics and graphic novels. My daughter, who is almost eight, loves the format of these types of books, but since they're usually written for older teens, the content isn't always appropriate. This one was perfect for her, and, as the younger sister of a nearly-teen brother, she could perfectly relate to the storyline, as well.
A great book with wonderful, full-color illustrations, you don't want to miss this one!
