This book is chock-full of useful information at any stage of the golf timeline a parent or player might be in. It's nice to have one book that you can continually reference to and not have to buy two or three books. The Golf Guide has skills and drills for the player but also gives parents and players a big picture for a career in golf as a player and/or at a golf course. I bought it for my son and I look forward to having both of us use this book as a reference tool.

I am a PGA member. I can not recommend this book highly enough for parents and juniors. It is extremely well written and has very valuable information for juniors at all stages of the game. I particularly like how the authors used real life examples to make their points clearer. It is the only book written of its kind. I feel that this book will help juniors make better choices for themselves. It will also help them enjoy and appreciate the game of golf for their lifetime.

Science author Seymour Simon gives us a great education on Gorillas in his book titled Gorillas. We learn neat facts about these creatures. They can weight only weight about 5 pounds we they are born up grow to weight more than 400 pounds! The book includes lots of full color photos of Gorillas. It also tells us there are 3 group of gorillas. We learn about all three groups in the book and get to see pictures of them as well.

The content of the book is written in a simplistic manner, but is loaded with facts and statistics about gorillas.

Children who would like learn more about gorillas will enjoy this book. We recommed it to animal loves ages 4-9.

WONDERFUL INTRODUCTION BOOK.

The photographs in this book alone are worth the price of the book. This is a great starter book for children. The text is quite simply written yet is loaded with facts and leaves plenty of room open for discussion. The book is quite well researched. This is a good one to read one on one with your child or it is good to read to the entire class. The kids all seem to like it quite well, which, in the end, is really what matters. Highly recommend this one.

In "Gorillas," a rich assortment of full-color photographs is complemented by the interesting, straightforward text of Seymour Simon. The result is fine book for young readers who are interested in gorillas.

Simon describes the different subspecies of gorilla: the western lowland, eastern lowland, and mountain gorilla. He also discusses gorilla anatomy and social life. Particularly interesting is the material about gorilla babies and their development. Simon makes it clear that gorillas are, in general, peaceful beings who have sometimes been inaccurately portrayed by the entertainment industry. Towards the end of the book, Simon discusses some threats to wild gorillas and pays tribute to the work of pioneering gorilla researchers George Schaller and Dian Fossey.

Of course, very young readers will be happy to simply look at the stunning photographs in the book. The cameras capture the varied range of gorilla facial expression and body language. Especially moving are the pictures of young gorillas and gorilla family groups. Looking into the faces of these beings, you can really see the genetic kinship they share with humans (Simon notes that our two species share 98% of our DNA)."Gorillas" is another fine achievement for Seymour Simon.

This book is filled with useful information and helpful exercises. It helped me to understand grammar concepts my own English teacher could not explain to me. Thanks to this terrific and fun-filled book, I was able to get through 8th grade English easily. My teachers and parents have noticed a change in my papers as well as a better understanding of grammatical concepts. Anyone who is lost in the world of English grammar, should pick up this book.

Caroline Uff's books are simply terrific. I am a librarian and often read Lulu to preschoolers. They love everything, from her name, to her family, to her sunshine smile and perfect braids. The artwork is vivacious and the text simple, but expressive. We can't wait for the next Lulu to be published.

Happy Birthday, Lulu! is a wonderful book for preschool through early school age children. From beginning to end it contains large, bold words to catch the young readers attention as well as those just beginning to recognize words. Also the positioning of the words at the top of the page makes it easy for the child to find. Another great aspect of this book is its vibrant colors. Uff uses many different bright shades to make her pictures stand out. When I first saw them I thought of a pack of crayons. Some light, some bright, but all of them bursting off the page. I thought it was clever how she used a double-page spread. Combined with her use of large pictures and sentimental meaning, I find it hard to look away or loose attention. This is a wonderful book that any preschooler would love to look at, read, or just point out the large array of colors and familiarity.

This is the third in the superb Lulu series from Caroline Uff. Each book is an idealised story of childhood.

My child is completely captivated by the vibrant colours. Each page has lovely illustrations with a simple dialogue or narrative. The story is easy to follow. The characters are diverse and appealing. My little daughter is excited each time she sees the book, and is not content until she has been read it and shown the pictures. She has longer periods of concentration reading Lulu than she has with any of her other toys or books.

I am now a fan of Caroline Uff's books, and can sincerely recommend her books to any parent.

This cookbook has been a staple of mine for more than 10 years now. While I rarely use it on a daily basis, whenever I have a special occasion, this is where I turn. From taking Dixie Caviar to work to fixing Pork Chops with Browned Garlic Butter Sauce for Mother's Day to baking Jalapeno Cheese Grits for Christmas breakfast, this cookbook always has something for me. And the personal stories that acompany many of the recipes are a delight to read. A truly wonderful addition to any cookbook collection and a great gift for others.

Of the many cookbooks I own, this is my very favorite. I have given it as a gift several times, and everyone I know who owns it agrees that it is great! The recipes are wonderful and most are relatively simple: common, easy-to-find ingredients, reasonably quick preparation, and things that just sound good! I entertain frequently, and this is the first book I go to for ideas. I've often been asked for recipes taken from this book. Additionally, the presentation of the book is pretty and fun--delightful stories and good cooking tips, along with lovely photos. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys cooking or seeks a gift for someone who does. You won't be disapppointed!

My husband is the main cook of our family, but I do try to cook sometimes - I am one that has to have a recipe, and that has to look at several before deciding what to cook. Both of us love this cookbook. It is one of our top 2 (The other is Gracious Goodness, which also happens to have originated in Memphis, put out by the Memphis Symphony.) All of the recipes we've tried have been great, and we frequently get asked for the recipe, especially for the prociutto wrapped asparagas, and I don't really even like plain asparagas but these are a treat! We bought a half dozen of these to give as gifts. The salads I've tried have also been great. Anyone who likes to cook would love this pretty and classy Southern book.

I was given this book years ago as a gift when moving away from IL. I have well over 40 cookbooks in my collection. This one is, by far, my favorite. All recipes are easy to prepare and each one has been a hit in our home. I LOVE this cookbook. In the past, I have purchased cookbooks by favorite cooks, only to be disappointed to find many recipes are out of the ordinary fare, which have gone over like a lead balloon with my children. I have yet to prepare something from this book, which my children won't eat. It is a true representation of midwestern favorite foods. The potato soup recipe is a favorite at out house.

It's a pity Abe Lincoln wasn't much of a gourmet. His hometown of Springfield had wonderful recipes. Honest to Goodness covers the gamut of the Midwestern dining experience. The soups and breads, like many of the main courses, service both everyday and elegant occasions. This cookbook is simple, appealing, and full of charming Abe stories to make it a great read as well.

Children and cat lovers will enjoy this "origin" of the purr story
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-27
In the beginning, cats did not purr, but they did get into mischief. Old Mother Holly has a cat and he was one that was constantly getting into trouble. One day, Mother Holly had to go out and she gave Cat a list of tasks to do while she was gone. At the end of the list, she included a very stern "Or Else!" However, Cat being a cat, decided to do things differently. He started doing one thing and it went wrong and then every attempt to fix a problem created a new one. Feathers, water and popcorn were all flying through the house. In a flurry of great effort, Cat barely managed to get it all cleaned up. The last thing he did was pop some stray popcorn into his mouth.
When Mother Holly arrived, she was pleased to see that all was done and she promised Cat a treat. Unfortunately, the popcorn started making noises in Cat's stomach. The noise was a soft one and even though Cat confessed to all his failures, Mother Holly forgot about that as she listened to the soft sound emanating from Cat. She found the noise pleasurable and asked Cat to do it again. After a short time, both Mother Holly and Cat were sound asleep.
There is something very comforting about the purr of a cat; it is certainly part of the reason why humans, especially children, have an instinctive love of cats. This story, an "explanation" of the purr, is one that will delight children and amuse adults.

As I said before, the title of this book was the attraction for me. I actually found the illustrations a little fearful. I personally would have liked to have seen brighter colors used in the illustrations and utilizing the title for a more whimsical tale. That being said, I still purchased several copies of the book and give it as a gift -- especially when one is focusing on the acquisition of a cat as a pet for the little one in the house.

Cat lovers, rejoice! Here's another paean to our favorite feline pet. Schachner's illustrations are hysterical as cat gets into all the mischief anyone can imagine - from tangling in the thread of his mistress's spinning wheel to climbing into the cupboard and creating chaos among the crockery.

Never one to clean up his own messes, cat considers housework and pushing a broom "weary" work (we agree). Nonetheless, in Mother Holly's absence he spills the soup, and while trying to clean up turns the kitchen into a duck pond. He also releases feathers from a quilt, and makes a myriad of messes.

Nonetheless, Mother Holly dotes on her pet, just as we do on ours. Animal lovers have found a kindred soul.

My Grandson, at age 2 years and 9 months picked this out because of the picture on the cover. I thought he wouldn't understand and enjoy it because of the British expressions. Was I ever wrong! He loves it and I love reading it to him. After two days he was playfully using the expression "I'll be in a pickle for sure" and telling his mother he had swallowed some thunder after eating some corn. Now two months later, I was surprised that he has practically memorized the book (the first six pages completely - and there are a lot of words, many of them quite unusual, on those six pages. He often suggests we "tidy up the cottage". Mother Holly is a great help with learning good behavior and, even after all the excitement, he usually goes to sleep when the cat does.

As a future educator I believe this book is an excellent source for anyone who has or teaches children. The terminology is easy to follow and the whole layout of the book is great. It not only gives you wonderful ideas on using music with your child but it shows you. I believe the revised edition should include prenatal music nurturing as a chapter and not just an appendix in the back along with a CD of some of the recordings. This is definitely a book I will use over and over again. I recommend this book 100%.

I am currently using this book in an Early Childhood Music class in Clermont, FL. This book is full of countless ideas for using music with young children. It is written in terminology that is easy to read and understand. I also believe that prenatal chapter needs to be included since music starts before birth, and a CD with examples of the music for the labs would be very helpful for those that are not taking the class. I have recommended this book to parents with young children.

Here's the outline: Kipper's friend Pig sends out a wish list for his birthday party, so Kipper visits a pet store to buy him the perfect gift. After carefully considering the many creatures in the shop, ("The stick insect... too much like a stick.") he finds a hamster and brings it home to give to Pig the next day. He names the hamster Roly, after dicovering the "tricks" he can do. Kipper adores Roly and wishes he didn't have to give him up the next day as a present to Pig. After he arrives at Pig's house, he discovers that Pig has received many pets as presents, so many in fact, that Pig, asks Kipper if he wouldn't mind "keeping Roly for him" - much to Kipper's delight.
