This is wonderfully written. My 3 yr old son loves saying, "But Bob is very red." (a repeated line in the book) In my particular book, the small board book, the blue color looks more purple than blue, but, other than that, this book is fantastic. It gets read a lot in our house.

More Than Just Colors.

Little kids love this book that stars Junior Asparagus. Junior opens his color box and with a little help from his friends, shows his favorite colors. This book is more interesting and entertaining than many color books. It also provides some laughs (even for adults) and has a lesson about God. Great book for kids three and younger.

Another hit from Big Idea!

My son (age 2) loves this book! And it really is helping him learn his colors! We read it over and over... he's constantly bringing me "Crayon Story" for another reading. It has the 3R's of children's books... rhythm, rhyme, and repetition, as well as humor and story. Also, it's gentle reminder that God made the world has gotten us talking about Creation in general.

One of my son's favorites!

When I ask my 14-month-old to go get a book for Mommy to read, more often than not he comes back with Junior's Colors. I don't know what it is about the book, but when he gets to the last page ("But Bob is very RED") he just giggles! I guess a red tomato with a big grin on his face is kind of funny to a toddler. I definitely recommend all of the VeggieTales books. And, as with all Veggie books, God is subtly present. ("When God made the world, he used all sorts of colors...")

Wonderful teaching book

My 2 year old LOVES this book. It's right up there with Winnie the Pooh. When she gets whiney, I ask her to go get Junior's colors & she eagerly gets it. She even asks for it while sitting in the car. It's possibly the vibrant colors & the familiarity of "the veggies". She already knows all her colors, but it is a great reinforcement in her learning.

I read and re-read these books as a child and I hope to read them with my children! They are lovely and truly magical. They capture the attention and imagination as few other books and series can. They are classics. A wise editor would do well to bring back these delightful tales, especially at a time when interest in all things magic seems to have hit a peak.

When I was in the 5th grade, I bought The Kingdom of Carbonel for 5 cents at the library in a pile of books they were getting rid of. The dust jacket had been lost, so someone had taken the time to draw a new cover for it. As soon as I picked up that book, I could not put it down. I have read it three times since, just for fun. Today I was going to recommend my niece check it out from the library, and I came to look up the author on Amazon. I can't BELIEVE this book is out of print! This is DEFINATELY one of the most magical children's books I have read in my lifetime, and I wish they would re-print it for our youngsters to enjoy!

When I was a child I found a book called Carbonel the King of Cats and fell in love. The sequel Kingdom of Carbonel takes place after Carbonel became the King, got married and had children. The escapades of Rosemary to find the lost kittens was wonderful. Editors!! This book is worth reprinting!!! In fact the whole series is worth reprinting!

I sat in our old town library as a 10 year old and could not put these books down (I'm now 46 and an elementary teacher). I remember that the story revolved around a girl who found a magic broom and then could talk to Carbonel, hence learning all about the magical kingdom of cats that other people knew nothing about. Finding the broom and getting to know Carbonel opened up a whole new, magical world that kept me enthralled. The only books I have ever read since then that have kept my attention in that same sort of way are the Harry Potter Books. I have spent years looking for the Carbonel books and now thanks to computers I have been able to find them. I hope that someone will let a publisher know and that these really great stories will be reprinted and shared with other young people. There is something truely magical about them and I have thought about Carbonel many times throughout my life.

I, too, found this book as a child and was absolutely captivated, so much so that I got a friend to track down the original (Carbonel) and buy me a copy from England. Carbonel is now available in the US, and I very much hope the same publisher publishes Kingdom of Carbonel as well. There is such magic and delight in the book and images that have stayed with me all my life, particularly the talking kittens and the flying rocking chair.

One of the other reviewers mentioned Harry Potter. There is a great deal of similarity of mood between the Carbonel books and Harry Potter. One can easily imagine Rosemary Brown as a muggle caught up in the same magical world Harry is from. (She even has neighbors named Mr. and Mrs. Tonks.)

This wonderful cookbook has recipes from celebrities (David Cassidy, Phyllis McGuire, Rosie O'Donnell, Lance Burton) and chefs from the major Strip Hotels (Caesars Palace, Las Vegas Hilton, Spago, Rio, MGM). I found the recipes very straight-forward and easy to read. Color is the word for this book. In addition to the bright colors on the cover, those colors are carried out through the book in each chapter. There is information about Las Vegas, the surrounding areas, etc. I found it an interesting read. The pictures of the food in this book make your mouth water. I could not believe the recipes were makeable for the food I saw! The recipe on the cover was a watermelon sorbet/salsa shrimp cocktail. Only in Las Vegas! It made me glad to know that all the money generated from the sale of the book go back into the Las Vegas community. I had difficulty obtaining a copy here, they kept selling out.

This cookbook has great visual appeal, as well as excellent recipes that are not difficult to make - at least those that I have tried are not. "Salt-Encrusted Beef Tenderloin" produced the best tenderloin I have ever made and the "Garlic Cream Cheese Mashed Potatoes" are absolutely the best! I've tried several other recipes with equal success. This book would make a wonderful gift for anyone who enjoys cooking or just reading cookbooks.

I received this cookbook as a gift. It didn't get stuck on the shelf; I spent several evenings looking through it. The layout and use of color and photos as well as the periodic commentary makes it great for pleasure reading. But it's a wonderful cookbook, too. I have tried several recipes already, and every one has been a success. Many are simple enough for family meals as well as savory and elegant enough for entertaining. I will be using this cookbook regularly.

This book is not only beautiful, it just sparkles with energy. Every recipe that I have tried is just outstanding! I recently had a luncheon and served the Asparagus Tart, salad with the Soy Orange Vinaigrette dressing and Key Lime Cheesecake. The meal was a real hit with my friends and the recipes were so simple that I could easily do it again! The one thing that impresses me most about this cookbook is that the recipes are straightforward, easy to follow, and delicious. I'm sure this cookbook will be used repeatedly and not sit on the shelf. The chef and celebrity recipes are great additions and the sidebars about the recipes and chefs are interesting reading.

We checked this book out at the library and decided we needed to own it. It is a wonderful book about a goose wanting to be a father and the "green goose" searching for his "real" mother after discovering he looked different. He realizes he has a wonderful father and goes back home. It's great for adopted children.

Wonderful book covering so many subjects in a short entertaining time. Father goose longs for a child, and adopts a very strange egg. After the little green goose is born, the baby chicks tease saying thats not really your mommy, you dont look anything alike. The little green goose goes around trying to find out who he looks like and then becomes lonely and returns home, realizing home is where you are loved. Great book for adoptive fathers. Also for those involved in transracial adoption. The story illustrates a fathers love and caring, the idea that families do not need to look alike, and all this is done with a tale that is good for its own sake. The illustrations are superb, my favorite is the final one, this great big green dinosaur-like creature (the little green goose) with the father goose laying on top of his head, one wing stretched out protectively over his child and both fast asleep.

Super Book

You could hardly do better than to get "The Little Green Goose" for any father, whether adoptive or biological. Adele Sansone's text is a miracle of economy, covering parenthood, adoption, geneaology, and more with a minimum of fuss and text.

The barnyard goose decides that he wants to be a father, but as he has no wife or other partner, he decides to adopt a spooky looking green egg found by the dog at the edge of a field. The goose settles himself on top of the eggs and waits and waits. When the egg finally cracks open, what emerges is some sort of lizard or dinosaur or who knows what--but it definitely is not a goose. Still, Sansone's goose dad utterly ignores the differences between himself and his new son and makes a natural (and skillful) parent. When the "green goose" decides to try to figure out what his real background is, he has little luck and ends up coming home to the goose--who, after all, is the only parent he's ever known.

The illustrations, by Alan Mark, are utterly charming. The "green goose" is splotched and splashed with color, while the goose is drawn sparingly and convincingly. This is, overall, a fun tale with subtle and valuable life lessons.

As good as the author's award-winning CROSSING JORDAN, this book explores such serious issues as friendship, responsibility, and heroism then laces them with adventure and laugh-out-loud funny lines. The story is absorbing, and the characters will leave you hoping for a sequel.

Got this book because it was on the Sunshine State Readers list for 3-5 grade. Problem: author uses language that is inappropriate for this age group. Several uses of the word "bu**" another "fa**" and several "b**b", which I find inappropriate for 8 -10 year old kids. My local public elementary school won't even stock the book. Why would Mr. Fogelin do this to an otherwise great kids book?

Praise for Adrian Fogelin's Books and a reaction to a previous review

Review Date: 2007-04-29
Both my husband and myself are educators and have had the pleasure of reading many of Adrian Fogelin's books. I felt compelled to write this review both in praise of Mrs. Fogelin's excellent stories, and in reaction the the posting below that complains of the offensive language used in My Brother's Hero.

First, let's make clear what we're talking about: the terms this individual is referring to are the f-word, and two b-words (that's "fart," "butt" and "boob" - yes, I wrote them out without the asterisks...gasp!). Of course, every parent is entitled to decide what is appropriate for their child to read, however, I would be deeply saddened to think that any one would be deprived of the opportunity to experience Mrs. Fogelin's wonderful stories because of (let's say it clearly) some extremely mild language.

Our children are growing up in a world in which anorexic starlets who flit in and out of rehab and forget their underwear are held up as role models; in which a University student can murder two people, compile and mail a deranged manifesto (which is later aired on national television), and then go on to murder 29 others and himself; in a country embroiled in war and fearful of an unknowable, ever-present terrorist threat; and yes, they are keenly aware of, and affected by, all of this.

Adrian Fogelin's stories, which are wonderfully written, are in direct contrast to all of the 'over the top' nonsense that has become our reality. Mrs. Fogelin's books are great because they show kids that it's OK to be who they are, even if what they are is chubby, or poor, or nerdy. They are tales of normal kids, leading normal lives, having friendships, confronting their problems and, here's the kicker, making the right choices, the hard, not the glamorous or instantly-gratifying choices. And yes, the characters do occasionally say things, like 'butt' or 'fart,' but isn't that what kids actually do?

So I guess in a long-winded way I'm saying that Adrian Fogelin's books are a great choice for any parent looking for something meaningful for their kids to read. The characters and situations are often funny and touching, sometimes sad or embarrassing, but always thoughtfully portrayed and in my opinion, completely appropriate for any reader of any age.

A Florida adventure that will stay with you for a long time

Adrian Fogelin has the enviable ability to spin an adventure tale in a strong character driven tale. She builds unique and fascinating child and teen characters and lets conflict build naturally with the characters and their circumstances bumping into each other. This is not the easiest way to build a plot in a young adult story--but it creates a bond between readers and characters that is seldom attained by most of today's young adult writers. "My Brother's Hero" not only has sea adventure and unique characters--it also has detailed nautical description of the Florida Keys. Adrian also captures the love/hate relationship between siblings with believability and humor.
This novel is enjoyed by both boys and girls in our middle school media center.
This is a good read. An adult reading it aloud with a child would
find much to enjoy too.

This book is the 3rd in a series ("Crossing Jordan", "Anna Casey's Place in the World", and "My Brother's Hero") about some kids from a North Florida neighborhood. They get a chance to spend time in the Florida Keys. The characters are terrific and very realistic! The story has things any 4th grade through early high school has experienced: The excitement and risks of adventure, the first dawnings of girl-boy relationships as well as the fun and anxiety of growing up, but don't tell the kids that! To them, it will be a great adventure story set in the colorful Florida Keys full of exotic ocean life! It has a great climax that will keep them riveted! I would recommend all the books in the series:: "Crossing Jordan", "Anna Casey's Place in the World", and "My Brother's Hero".

As both an instructor of adult learners and one of the interviewees in the work (who faced many stereotypical situations growing up in New Jersey...there are Cherokees in New Jersey?!! Amazing!), I can say that a book like this should be mandatory in the school systems of America. Without it, teachers proliferate the same unintentional prejudices they have, and kids receive that and pass it on as adults.

The book was clearly laid out, with seemingly much thought into how the information could be displayed in an informative and easy to understand fashion. As an educator, I rely on such layouts to make classes easier to design, and I appreciate the work the authors did in making my job of teaching adults how to teach to diverse groups a little easier.

To Yvonne and Arlene... wado! (thanks in Cherokee)

As a teacher concerned with intercultural realations, I was so excited to find a book that would finally tell the truth about Indians. They exist today and are involved in all kinds of things from Tai Chi to engineering. As a social studies teacher, I am relieved to finally have a book that gives an accurate picture of Indians with easy activities that I can use with any age. Although this book is a teaching guide, grades 4 - 8, it can be used with all ages and in a variety of subjects from sports to science to career exploration to current events. Not only does this book celebrate Indian culture, but it compares similiarities with other groups, finding the strength in all.

There are web sites, resources on books, films, curriculum units in the appendices and at the end of each chapter. All of the chapter titles are interesting and witty like "Where We Live" which includes a brief history of how Indians were moved about and map exercises on identifying where Indians live today. Another chapter is "Paying the Bills" which has photos and mini-biographies on Indians in a variety of professions and activities on tribal businesses. Students can learn what is offensive to Indian people and what problems confront them today in "The STruggle Continues." Art projects, writing projects and even games for the classroom are all in here! This is a fantastic book! Every classroom needs it!

I am a Cherokee New Yorker (Nuyagi Tsalagi) who volunteered for ten years working with the Native American Education Program for New York City as a member of the Parent's Committee. It was during this time that I met Yvonne Beamer and the other dedicated men and women who worked so hard to identify and help Native American children in the city. It was humbling to understand that every time we identified a new child for our program we found a damaged child, one who had been hurt by the mistaken stereotypes perpetuated in the larger population of the city. A large part of our struggle as an institution was to get appropriate information in the hands of teachers so they could be accurate and informative when they augmented their lessons with Native American materials. After too long, Yvonne and Arlene Hirschfelder have put together a book with many activities and resources for teachers grade 4-8 to use in their classrooms. The material is appropriate sociologically and pedagogically and fills a gaping void for teachers. It was always our experience that once we talked to teachers and showed them materials to use in their classrooms all their students become better, not simply the Native Americans in their midst. There is a deep hunger for accurate, relevant information about Native Americans in the youth of today. This book is a giant first step at feeding that hunger.

A clear labor of love!

Native Americans Today is a sensitive comprehensive and imaginative education activity book that helps teachers and students dispel stereotypes and explore diverse realities of modern Native Americans. This book works nicely with multi-cultural studies and Native American studies for middleschoolers. Lessons are divided into 8 chapters/categories: Ground Rules, Where We Live, Growing Up, Growing Old, å Day In the Life, Communications, Arts (Walk In Beauty), Economics, and The Struggle Continues. Each lesson is carefully organized and clearly presented with grade level materials, time, objectives, activities, and enrichment/extensions plus reading and resources. The lessons on Native American terminology and stereotyping are particularly good. Field trips to the community and crafts and research projects flesh out the classroom discussion exercises. Students learn to define respect as well as racism. One of my favorite sections is the chapter on Indians in Careers/employment under Paying the Bills/Economics. There are 32 biographical sketches of Native American individuals and their employment along with black and white photos. Careers range from teaching/research, social work, casino poker dealer, computer instructor, and bank president to massage therapist, aeronautical engineer, repatriation director and osteopathic physician. The objective is that students will learn Native Americans are employed in many vocations and locations, become familiar with credentials required for certain careers, and use mapping skills. Another interesting lesson is Burial Ground Desecration and Repatriation. Students read "No Peace For Indian Burial Grounds" and discuss related issues. An energetic approach encompasses many ideas and stimulates the students. Also useful are the appendices on web sites, Native News Radio Stations, and other resources. As a teaching guide and multicultural studies resource, Native Americans Today is a rich resource, carefully and authentically created. But it is more than just effective. It is a clear labor of love.

Students can learn what is offensive to Indian people and what problems confront them today in "The STruggle Continues." Art projects, writing projects and even games for the classroom are all in here! This is a fantastic book! Every classroom needs it!

My two year old son loves this book. It is interactive and simple. It is a great book to read together because turning the pages is a little odd.

I bought this book because it has bright colors to capture my child's attention, simple story, and interactive. And he loves it!!!! He wants it read over and over. Whenever you can mix motions and interact while reading the book, the child gets more into it.

A nice alternative to the fuzzy books

My 11 month old is becoming quite a fan of this book. Ring, ring, ring and tick, tock make him laugh. The squeak is fun too. It's a nice change to the typical furry touch books. And it is another chance to give him kisses!

This has been my daughters number one choice every night before bed since she was about 14 months. If you ask her what book she wants to read it is always this one. It has held up very well considering we read it about 10 times a day.

Great book!

This book will quickly become a favorite. Also try Peekaboo Kisses. My baby loves to touch and feel all the animals in Peekaboo Kisses. In Noisy Kisses he loves the horn he gets to honk. These books are great for younger children. This was the first book my baby ever reacted to. I'd recommend this book for ages 2 months and up.

Why exactly I am writing a review of a cookbook, given that I do not cook, is unclear even to me. Nonetheless, I did see a copy that my wife had bought laying on the counter and as a NW boater immediately recognized the cover shot of Percival landing, which intrigued me enough to pick it up and thumb through its pages, like a kindergartner, showing interest only in the pictures. I came across the Summer Tomato Tart first, and handed it to my wife begging her to make it. She did, it was great and I am sold. Later, I asked her to make the Spicy Saucy Halibut, Baked Breakfast Sandwiches, Mocha Truffle Cookies and hearty, slow- cooked lamb with mushrooms; all were first class.

A truly wonderful cookbook!

Don't be afraid to to try any of the wonderful recipes it has to offer: blackened tri-tip, grilled thai chicken with ginger-lime aioli and the hazelnut french toast.

The best and easiest Clam Chower and Beef Bourguinonne recipes I've ever tried. I can't wait to make the tempting salad and pancake recipes. The notes at the bottom of so many pages are extraordingary. The historical information and amazing cooking tips Inspire me! I can't recommend this cookbook enough.

I have never made carrot cake from scratch - it seemed too complicated. My neighbor suggested that I try the recipe in this book. It was surprisingly quick and easy to gather the ingredients and assemble the cake. The cake was incredible moist and full of nutritional yummies and the frosting was a perfect match. I consider myself an average baker at best - but I produced the perfect 3 layer cake that was gone as soon as I cut into it.

Best cookbook I've used in a long time!

I recently picked up this cookbook looking for something new and exciting to make for my family of 5. It definitely has not disappointed us! Every recipe is simple and straight forward. My family can't get enough of the clam chowder, for which the recipe is so easy!!! We've also fallen in love with 3 different salads and a pasta dish. I can't wait to keep trying more. Two thumbs up on this cookbook!

If you collect the Junior League cookbooks as I do, be sure to add "Oil & Vinegar" from Tulsa to your collection. You will love the recipes. I have only one complaint: there are no photos of the completed recipes.

Too many cookbooks these days include recipes that fail to turn out as promised -- even when they've been followed to a "T". Not this one! Everything I've tried has been easy AND wonderful! My favorites so far: Atomic Salad and the Cookie Jar Gingersnaps.

A truly superb cookbook compendium

Nicely illustrated with full-page color photography, Oil & Vinegar is comprised of the best of more than two thousand recipes that were submitted by members of the Junior League of Tulsa, Oklahoma. From Coconut Shrimp; Strawberry Butter; and Beef Salad with Asparagus and Broccoli; to Seared Sesame-Coated Salmon Sandwich; Veal Scaloppine in Lemon Sauce; and Cold Ginger Souffle, Oil & Vinegar is a truly superb cookbook compendium that would grace any personal or community library cookbook collection.

Since I have bought this cookbook, I turn to it more often than any of my other cookbooks. I've tried about 25 of the recipes and have been very happy with each one. My two favorites are the tortilla soup and Turkey Mountain salad. The tortilla soup is the best I have ever eaten, and is so easy!
