I didn't get to use this book as the college changed the requirment. I did briefly look at it before returning it and it appeared to cover a lot of territory and be very detailed about society. Worth a look.

I needed this book for my class but did not want to pay full price at my school's book store. I decided to venture into the world of online bookstores and purchase a used book. I was so happy to see that there were no marks or writing in this book whatsoever! I am very satisfied with the product and the seller! Thank you!

A great read with a variety of fascinating topics examined. Data is presented quite objectively, and users can draw own conclusions as to causality (though some possible hypotheses are presented).

un libro sin "tema unificador"

Review Date: 2007-02-16

Not the sum of its parts

Review Date: 2006-12-12
Let me preface this by saying how psyched I was to read this. Copies at the library were perpetually checked out so when I finally planned ahead and got it on hold I had some anticipation going. This wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't the sum of it's parts.

Each chapter goes into an interesting article on some topic. The best of these for me was the analysis of race and trends in baby names. Something like a third of black babies in California have a name that no other baby in the state has. White babies tend to have the same names as one another. One of the more blah chapters for me was about how the crime drop in the 90s was a result of abortion being legalized. The authors show coorellation but crime is very complex, and the treatment so brief that this seems political and not deep at all. Politics isn't taboo at all, but here it seems to be driving the authors and that doesn't lead to fun interesting eddies. Basically the chapters are a mixed bag. Some are pretty good. Some could easily have been left out, because they just weren't so well done and seem unfocused. They fit together to make a bunch of stand-alone articles, not a single whole book.

Almost any chapter from this book would be good to read. On the other hand, hearing about any one chapter is probably going to raise your expectations. If you like the snippets you hear, then buying the book will get you a heap of those snippets. If you are cool with that then go for it.

Excellent read - Inspired thinking

The basic premise of this book is that statistical analysis in the service of micro-economics can be used to illuminate how people actually behave. (This is distinct from the related question of how people ought to be behave, which properly belongs in the realm of ethics or, more dubiously, religion and politics.) In a world that is increasingly divided into murderous factions fueled by absurd beliefs based on centuries-old "wisdom", this book is a breath of fresh air, and its empirical approach to everyday life would do much good, if adopted by world leaders.

THIS BOOK CONCERNS THE LIFE AND CAREER OF JENNIFER LOPEZ. IT HAS SOME NICE FACTS AND STORIES. I FOUND THIS TO BE AN INTERSTING READ. IT HAS SOME GOSSIP AND TIDBITS CONCERNING HER INSECURITIES ABOUT MEN, BEING ASHAMED OF HER FAMOUS BOOTY AND EVEN SOME BEDROOM SECRETS FROM HER FIRST HUSBAND. I LIKED THIS AND FOUND IT AN ENTERTAINING READ.

I knew that I would be buying a book of complete worthlessness but seeing as I am a HUGE fan, I didn't care. Its just another piece of fanfanalia.

The book is a compilation of quotes from Bennifer, their family members and "sources" quoted from National Enquirer and Star past articles. Its hilarious how they bascially meld her life story with inadvertant quotes from past interviews and complete untruths from said "sources".

There are some grainy b/w photos in the middle for your enjoyment, but contrary to what the title claims, you do not learn the secrets to her success.

Darn.

This book really teaches you the struggles to J.Lo's success. You realize a lot of things that happened to Jennifer through-out her life. But, most importantly, you see, that it hasn't been all peaches and cream for J.LO. She struggled to get were she is, and, i deeply admire her for that.

The book itself, is not a newbarry award winner, but it definetely deserves praises. It is highly enjoyable, and entertaining. It'll make you laugh, think, and learn to respect the struggles of another person, and what they have been through. Though when you see this book it might look kind-of goofy, "don't judge a book by it's cover"!

It is very thrilling to see the rise of a superstar, especially when you know all the sweat and tears that they have passed in order to be where they are know! And, unfortunately for the people that descriminate J.Lo just because they don't like her, she really is one of those artists. And it really shows with this book!

So..., go get "J.Lo's secreat climb to the top" because i highly recomend it!

I really like the way the book is laid out, very logical. I've noticed that my professor overlaps with the book a lot, which is great because the book definitely gives more details and in depth explanations. All in all great book for this field of psychology.

Extremely poor organization

This book has the worst organization of any textbook that I have ever tried to read. The paragraphs lack flow and cohesive themes, thus making the text very difficult to follow.

Only buy this book if it is required for a class.

Descriptions were confusing.

I am a graduate in psychology and have read many psychology books in my student career. This book was poorly written and the organization was horrible. When Sternberg would be describing a study, often his descriptions were confusing and unorganized. If a professor was thinking about using this book for his or her class, I would strongly suggest otherwise. There are other books that are better. For example, Ronald T. Kellogg's book Cognitive Psychology would be more helpful and the descriptions are better worded.

This textbook is a real drag to read even when you are interested in the subject matter. A highlighter is a must because it reads like a novel with very few headings. It isnt in color and has many errors and typos. If it is required, buy it used because it probably wont be a book you want to keep. If you are looking to learn about cognition look towards the neuroscience books LWW and Lange offer.

No solutions... How are you supposed to check your progress?
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.

This book is good about listing the objectives and showing you exactly where to find the answers for the multiple choice questions. For example: What is the purpose of a job cost sheet? The book highlights the area where the answer is. Easy huh? Well, what about the actual accounting problems? The detailed problems at the end of each chapter have NO SOLUTIONS to them, and you can't buy a solutions guide unless you are an instructor! I'm not an accounting wizard, so I have to actually practice before it sticks in my brain... imagine that. I guess they expect everyone to see the problems and read about the problems and automatically get it. They work out a "Demonstration Problem" for you, but that only applies to some of the problems at the end of each chapter.

Very Practical Book,Classic

Jerry really knows how to help people learn accounting. Learning accounting is about practising but not reading. Reading helps but it won't solve problems. The one thing I really appreciate about this book is Jerry uses real life accounting practice within companies from different industries to illustrate every single chapter, within which all the accounting theories and principals naturally flow. You can see all the kinds of accounting problems with actual number and data being solved with the application of relevant accounting theories, principals and methods. You know how real things are done. I have read many accounting books, among which loads of books lack exercises for me to practice after I read certain chapter. But buying Jerry's book, you get two books, one for reading, and one for exams. Nearly half of the book is Exam Questions, which emulate my real exams quite well. I can't believe an accounting without good exercise questions is an book. If you seriously want to pass exams and know how the real accounting is done, this is the book for you!

I bought this book for a Managerial accounting class. I found that chapters to be well written and the example easy to follow. Enron gets used a lot. What I didn't like was that problems in the back of the book are not as clear as they could be. Most of the time, I plug in the wrong formula. So that part could have been clearer. The answers are all on a CD, that access a website for the answers. So if you like me and still have dial-up, you may have a problem there too. However I am still pulling a B in the class, so I'm getting something.

What a great and detailed biography of Ippolito Desideri, the greatest Jesuit missionary to Asia after Matteo Ricci! The author supplies a LOT of details about the journey of this brave missionary, like when he describes the political situation of Tibet or its invasion by the Chinese, or when he details the arguments between the Jesuits and the Capuchins (who went as far as writing to Rome to get the Jesuits recalled, since the friars claimed Tibet as THEIR mission field!!!God have mercy!!!!). I would have liked to read more about the theological dimension of Desideri's story, like a summary of the works he wrote after reading the Kanjur and Tanjur in Tibetan(!). What a man!

I really didn't know what would happen if I clicked on accept purchase.
