"The Gashlycrumb Tinies" details the gruesome/improbable fates of Amy to Zillah in the style of a childrens' alphabet book. However, it's definitely not for children young enough to be learning the alphabet, unless you want them to have nightmares or to turn out really creepy. That being said, if you have an irreverent and quirky sense of humor, you'll find it hilarious. And, you'll learn to be careful not to be done in by a thug or die of ennui. Really.

The Gashleycrumb Tinies is macabre yet hilarious. It's about children meeting untimely absurd demise but with a sense of dark humor. it needs to be taken the way it is meant. It really is quite clever with the wording and causes of death It is done by alphabetical names. examples are S in for Susan who perished of fits, L is for Leo who swallowed some tacks and N is for Neville who died of ennui(boredome). See very clever. By the way I am a 38 year old mother of two and find this hilarious. My kids don't really get it though. Oh well I geuss their sense of humor is not as developed as mine:)

Hilarious for ages 11+!

Hahahha I actually read this online because its so short... if you want to take a break from the stress of life for 10 minutes its great fun. The illustrations are very well done and the rhymes are genuis! i think my favorite kid is Basil who was assaulted by bears.. \hahhahhahha... that makes me burst into laughter again! seriously, if you like macabre hilarity, take a few minutes off and ENJOY THIS BOOK! (There is no graphic or adult images but the ideas would be very frightening for young children. I say 11+ because theres a girl with an axe in her head and some blood thats cartoonish but gross.)

Louisa County High School recommends that you read Baby Alicia Is Dying. We all agree that if you read the book then you would think before you made a bad action like Alicia's mother did. Many of us cried in the end.

Baby Alicia is Dying by Lurlene McDaniel is a great book. Well I want to tell you a little bit about what this book is about. It's about a girl named Desi who is hiv free and is trying to stop smoking and who wants a baby who is hiv positive and who wants to take care of that baby.In my opinion i think this book is exciting to me because it tells you the problems Desi is having and what she does And how she's gonna stop doing what she is doing.I recommend this book to people who like exciting books about drama and that tells you about people's lives.

I liked this book bacuase is told me about a little girl that was born with HIV. Also that seh was born HIV positive. I liked this book also becasue it has great details of what the young girl went through since she was born. I mostly liked this book bacaue of the was it decribes the characters are doing, and what is on in their mind at that time and place in the book. The sadest part was that when i read this book that I have felt the same pain as Alicia does in the book because my grandma Burger died of being HIV positive back in January of 2005.

Alicia was a unique and really nice baby. I didn't really think she should of got putt in the hospital because her mom didn't want her. The book teaches us that anyone can help the hospital and help little kids. It also teaches us that even though you got put in a hospital because your mom didn't want you, don't mean you're not a nice person. One example was when people started to tease a girl because she helped the hospital take care of kids.

Alicia was a great baby. She loved everybody. She knew what was wrong and what was right. Even though, she was only two.

This is a great book for ANYONE to read!

I am a new mom (5 month old baby) and found this book amazing. I really enjoyed reading it and I love that it covers both the theory and the practical side of how a child develops emotionally. It is very well organized; the first part covers the goals for emotional development, and the second part covers the challenges one encounters. Each chapter finishes with a very specific list of tips for parents, which are summarized at the end by theme, with a note of age relevance for quick reference. You can't get better organized than that!

My daughter is only three months old and already the information I've learned and applied from this book are working wonders. She's just such a happy baby and I believe that this book has made that possible. From the beginning she's been a sweet heart but from what I've read thus far I'm able to keep her smiling and understand what it is she need's from me. Every night I read this aloud to my hubby and we are just amazed how simple but effect the teachings in this book are. You may say that don't have the time to read this book but after reading just a few pages this book will make you want to find time to read it.

So much to read through.

If you are like most new moms, you will not have time to read this book. I have to read through a few pages just to get one piece of good advice from it. That's time that I just don't have to spare. This book is not good as a how-to book and is not organized well enough for anyone with children.

This is a great resource for new parents: well-written by two female pediatricians who are also mothers, written with a good dose of humor (so not a stuffy "facts only" book), and very readable as well. I highly recommend this book for all parents of young infants (I would also highly recommend their other book: Food Fights)

I absolutely love this book. It was amazing how helpful it is. I have a mother who is a certified OB-GYN registered nurse and I am one of 6 kids so I really thought I knew almost everything pertaining to babies, but this book opened my eyes to alot I had no clue about, especially everyday basic stuff. It is amazing how helpful and reader-friendly this book is. My husband loved it too!!

I love this book. The voice it is written in is both down to earth and funny. It makes you feel like you are talking with the authors themselves. It has many details about baby care often overlooked by other books or resources. The chapter on breastfeeding is particularly truthful and helpful. During the more trying moments of learning to care for my newborn I found this book to be a comfort.

Boring, pretty biased, but, good amount of detail

First, I've only read 2 or 3 chapters so far. It starts off with breastfeeding. Aside from its length the first chapter was a put off for me because the author seems biased about breastfeeding and a couple of other points. If a women weren't intending to or for some reason couldn't breastfeed, this chapter and this author may make her feel guilty which is unfortunate and certainly not what a mom with a newborn needs. I am pregnant now and plan to breastfeed because I agree with the benefits, but women during this time should receive support with whatever they choose (bottle or breast). Encouragement to breastfeed is probaly a good thing, but I just didn't like the vibe from this book...at least so far. Maybe I haven't read more yet because of the initial turn off. I rate it with 3 stars because I like a lot of details and this book appears to be fairly clear and practical for the new mom. Overall, you probably wouldn't regret buying the book, but as with me, you may want plan to buy others on newborns for various opinions so you may reach your own conclusions on how to mother your child.

As a NICU nurse, I purchased this book to give to a parent of premature baby. I strongly believe that information helps the parent understand the medical fragility of premature babies. And to see the gentle person hidden underneath the vast array of lines and machines. A wonderful resource! The information is well written. My parents love the book! I often recommend specific topics for the parents to read at home.

We received this book from a friend when our son was born at 23 week, and it literally became our bible the whole 132+ days he was in the NICU. Everything the Dr's would tell us we came home and looked up, jsut to get a better understanding, and mark, to look back at even now (and he is 2) to find helpful information for us now, as we are dealing with developmental delays. I would reccomend this book to anyone dealing with premature birth, and I even gave a copy to my friend when her son was born prematurely. I hope that this book can be as helpful to other families as it was ot us.

Our youngest son was born 14wks premature and not knowing anything about extreme premature babies we saught out a good book to help be a resource. Our son was lucky to only have a cpap and appeared to be doing well, but soon we were on quite a ride. From NEC, intestinal surgery, Pulminary Hypertension, chronic lung disease and surgery to repair a hole in his heart, we weren't sure what he was going to be up against next. This book helped guide us in a factual way.
Today he is 13 months old and has overcome EVERYTHING! He is a healthy and happy little boy working on keeping up with his big brother. We feel incredibly blessed.

I am 5 months pregnant and my husband bought me this book for Christmas (after a little hinting on my part!). I love this book, it is SO informative and easy to read. I am glad I am reading this now before I have the baby because 1) it gives me alot of good information to stockpile and pick and choose from, and 2) I'm not sure I will have the time to read it after the baby is born! This is my first child, so I know many pieces of basic information, but I love the charts, descriptions, and milestone trackers in this book, I am half-way through reading it and I feel I have already learned so much. I will be keeping it in my baby's nursery and I know I will refer back to it in the future, I have already dog-eared certain pages for quick future reference!

I have been acquainted with Brian for several years now and also have met many of the characters in the book. In fact I have visited the scene of this incredible story. What God has done there will melt most anyone. God's work is stunningly beautiful and He has blessed Brian with a rare experience coupled with a storytelling gift. Not only will you be drawn into the story, you will - without hardly knowing it - come away trained in basic church planting principles. I recommend this book to anyone called to the mission field and to anyone called to support and care for missionaries.

Gripping as well as practical

Quote-leftThis brilliant book should be better known and utilized. One one level, it is a very gripping account of missionary autobiography -- carrying the reader along, the author almost always succeeds in making the reader *feel* as well as mentally comprehend the story. For that alone, it is worth reading -- to experience a thick slice of a very adventurous family's life in seeking to understand and obey God's will for them, often in circumstances beyond what many reading it in English, have ever or are ever likely to experience. The story of Brian Hogan and his family will be an encouragement to all who peruse these pages.

This volume goes beyond even a very good missionary biography, however, in that Hogan interweaves his story with an understanding of *principles* of church-planting that simply *must* be understood by anyone seeking to establish a multiplying community of Jesus followers anywhere in the world -- principles which he learned from acknowledged mentors such as Dr. George Patterson.

Highly recommended for interested individuals as well as for students in relevant training programs.

Hey Brian,

I just finished your book!! Loved it!! It was so touching and heartfelt. Most of the Perspectives teachers books were great but they were more about information and following God's call for missions, which is great and very important. But your book was just a brilliant testimony of you and your families journey as an apostle, both the joys and the deep hurts. And I about lost it when I read the last part where the guy tracked you down in California and revealed God's plan for Jed's death, i was in a coffee shop full of folks and it took all my will power not to weep. God truly is amazing. I liked the way you got the idea for the title, even in the capital you still had to butcher your own meat, that rocks. I know I am biased on this book cause I want to work in Mongolia too. But is was a great read man. I don't know if you remember my conversation in Fort Smith but I know I want to work among the nomads and ride forever along the open steppe. So keep me in your prayers.

Peace, love, and harmony
Eric

And may Papa bless you and your family!!!

For some of us who wonder where God is working in the world today, this is a great read. I did frontier missions training under Brian and Louise Hogan and had heard their story before, but got so many new insights and better understanding by reading the book. It is well written, exciting, and a great way to "story" your way through George Patterson's church planting principles. It's interesting to read what happens on virgin soil when a great farmer comes in and plants good seed, then nurtures it and as a strong plant, it starts to reproduce the good seed that was originally planted. Very exciting and heart rending, the book gives a good idea of the obstacles that church planters are facing in the 10/40 window.

A Great Read plus....

This is an eye witness account of how God works among people all over the world to grow His Church! Besides being extremely readable, full of engaging stories and observations of life in a Mongolian community, this book contains illustrations of key principles of pioneer or frontier missions. For example: how to lead from the middle, how to grow indigenous leadership, how to find and use local metaphors.
If you are a Christian, you'll be encouraged and challenged. If you are not a Christian, you'll see inside a Christian's heart to see what makes a missionary tick.

I purchased this book on the recommendation of a friend after the loss of my son, which was the culmination of a series of increasingly cruel and difficult miscarriages. More than any other book, this one helped me sort through all of my losses and deal with the grief and make some sort of sense of it. I especially liked how the book, although it has a religious tone, isn't overly preachy and the chapter for husbands was also something my husband thought was good. I have passed my copy on to a friend who lost her son, but since then have encountered a number of friends and colleagues who, sadly, also have had similar experiences. I have taken to having an extra copy at all times so that when a friend does open up to me about a loss (I'm very open about my son) I have one to pass on.

After our fourth daughter was stillborn January 2008, I thought that no one or nothing could relate to how I felt. I was wrong after I read this book. This book accurately describes
my feelings of guilt, helplessness, fears, etc. It is very comforting to know that I am not crazy for thinking the way I do.I have read a lot of books on this subject (which is so sad for it happens way too often to so many people) but this one is the best so far. I am going
to recommend it to a local hospital for anyone who (god forbid), has this tragic event in their lives as well. Deb Davis writes knowing my thoughts
and my questions, realizing at the same time that we will never know the answer why after 36 healthy weeks, her spirit was chosen to leave this earth. I love you so much...... and miss you...... we will meet again someday.

After our son was stillborn in April of 2006, we were looking for any support we could find. We went to the beach and I read this book out loud to my husband cover to cover in 1 day. Everything we were feeling was covered in this book. It was to the point and very validating. We referred to this book daily. I have purchased several of these for our support group and the hospital where our son was born. We felt like this was something parents should leave with and for that matter a book the nursing and hospital staff should have as required reading. During our darkest days this book helped us work through the many emotions that come with the death of a child. If you have suffered the same fate or know someone who has I highly recommend this book.

Our first child, our son Wyatt, was stillborn and it has been the most devastating event of our entire lives. I bought this book after a fellow angel parent recommended it and absolutely loved it. It is so "nice" to see all the thoughts and feelings you have after losing a child right there in print. It makes you realize you're not going crazy, that those thoughts and feelings are legitimate, and that you are not alone. I carried this book everywhere with me and would highlight phrases that were personal to me. It really helped me understand the loss of our son and give me strength and courage to go on with our lives while still keeping his memory alive. I'm so sorry to those of you having to look at this book, but I hope it can help you as much as it has helped me.

Pumping can be such a tedious task, but most of us are doing it just for the sake of our little ones. Pumping at work is no fun at all, but seeing the comradery these women shared inspired me to seek the same sort of support circle in my own company. Also, this book shows us that there are different ways of doing things (timing of weaning, etc.) and there are different viewpoints on being a working mom...and that there are lots of options for working moms -- and that you just have to go after it once you've analyzed your options. This book is a good resource and it's funny, too. I highly reccommend it!

This book is a "must have" for any nursing mommas going back to work and hoping to continue the breastfeeding relationship. I wish I had had this book when my first daughter was born and I went back to work. I felt so alone in my extremely challenging endeavor of pumping and working. If I had had this book, I would have felt supported, vindicated, inspired, and most of all, would have had the collective wisdom of other women who've learned how to make it work.

I now plan to buy this book for all my friends who are having babies and planning to continue their careers out of the home. I would also recommend Working Without Weaning but if you're only going to buy one book, this one will tell you most everything you need and it's so darn affordable! It's also well written and backed up by research.

Hurray for a couple of super-moms who managed to pump AND work AND somehow find time to write a book! Most books are written by stay-at-home moms who could never understand the pump/work dynamic. (No offense to them but even my local LLL leader couldn't help me because she has never experienced working out of the home 40 hrs/wk, away from her baby, dealing with pumping and storing milk and all the rest.

This book covers everything from starting the breastfeeding relationship on the right foot, introducing bottles, buying the right pump, negotiating time/space with your employer, sleep-deprivation, anxiety about being separated from your baby, the challenge of juggling career and family priorities, the challenge of being perceived as "less productive" at work now that you're juggling everything else. It has a nice balance of informative narrative from the authors, interspersed between the journal entries of the "Milk Mamas" group sharing the lactation room at IBM. I wish I had colleagues in my workplace to share this kind of journal with but reading their comments made me feel like I was not alone in my struggles.

Unlike other books I encountered, this book does not start from the premise that new moms should consider quitting their job or giving up their careers. It starts with the understanding that you are going back to work, either by choice or necessity, and aims to give you all the tools you need to successfully continue providing your baby with breastmilk for as long as you want to. Towards the end, it addresses the potential alternatives such as flex schedules, part time work, or putting your career on hold. But it doesn't start off making you feel like you're a bad mother if you go back to work.

Now that I've read this book (and a couple others), I just know I'm going to be more successful with pumping and working this time around with my second baby. In retrospect, it helped me see that I actually did a pretty good job the first time around (100% breastmilk until 6 months; daughter weened herself at 9 months when my milk supply dried up). I just felt like such a failure and like I lacked the kind of support I needed.

Definitely buy this book NOW and read it cover to cover if you are going to be a working mom! You'll enjoy and appreciate it.

The book seems to be based on close observations of thousands of families, by someone with good judgment. It says what the child should be doing at a given age, and what you the parent should be doing, without euphemisms or ideology. A big theme of the book is that you must establish compliance with rules between the ages of 16 and 24 months. I began to read this book just *after* my child turned two, and it is a bit sobering for me to ponder how sound its observations and advice appear now. I own at least two or three other books on parenting (the also good Brazelton and the treacly Dr. Sears), and this one is easily the best.

I don't know how I would have managed without this book!

I'm expecting my fifth child, so I've got a bit of experience with raising young children. I bought this book when my first was born and it is the only book that I have kept over the years and still consult.

The thing about this book is that it offers practical, sensible advice while helping you understand what is actually going on with your child developmentally, so that the advice makes sense. White has years of research and observation to call on, and his advice is sound and founded on this research. The book is broken up into various stages by age, and presented in logical sections.

This is not a book aimed at any particular developmental issue or problem, but paints a general picture of how babies develop under normal circumstances. He offers practical advice on how to help your baby's development relevant to their developmental stage, though there is no particular emphasis on pushing your child to reach any specific potential. Rather, you are encouraged to understand what will help baby most while being reassured that variance in level of development is normal.

Some issues that are covered in this book that I have found helpful were sibling rivalry, what toys to buy (and which to avoid), and how to effectively and humanely discipline very small children as well as teaching them to go to sleep on their own.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone with a new baby, and suggest getting it as soon as possible. You don't need to read it cover to cover, but can read each stage as your baby approaches it.

Excellent Buy!

We have raised an unspoiled, intelligent and well behaved 5 year old that proves that recommendations and techniques from this book really work. We always get compliments from friends, family and even strangers on how well behaved our kid is. We are reviewing again as our 1 yr old grows. There is no magic formula to parenting, and sure, you may need to adjust a thing or two based on your value systems, heritage and personal preferences but two things I can assure: Love has no substitute for what's best for your children and this book is a great buy. We actually have bought 4 copies as gifts for friends who are new to parenting

The only baby book I enjoyed reading

During a visit to my parent's house about 6 weeks into my son's life, my father presented me with his 30 year old copy of this book. Clearly it had made such an impression on him while he was raising me, that he had not only kept it, but remembered it when it was my turn to raise my first child. After reading the What to Expect series, Dr. Sears, Dr. Spock, and other various finds studiously like textbooks while I was pregnant (highlighting, note-taking, comparing ideologies), I found this book refreshing, simple, honest and captivating. The "rules" are so commonsensical they may seem at first like a waste of time. But the author discusses the reasons why babies and young children do the things they do and need their basic needs in a way that makes you feel like you can really see the world through your child's eyes. It is a delightful read and many times brought tears to my eyes as the lightbulb went off above my head and I could see how simple raising a child can be. My son is 7 months now and this book has never left the side of my bed. I re-read it frequently as he develops just to re-center myself when the stresses of parenthood ever seem too weighty.
