Wow! Wow! Wow! This book is the best kept secret in crochet!

I never heard anything about this book until I read that review of the book on about.com. I have never seen a pattern book that has 12 great designs before. That is amazing! What I don't understand is why they didn't put the best designs on the cover? The front cover should have had the Ivy League, Pink Fantasy, and Denim-looking cardigan. The book also has a surprising number of designs for boys. There are 6 designs that boys can wear. Basically there are 6 designs for girls only and the other 6 designs are really unisex. If you buy only one crochet book this year, make it this one.

My mom loves to crochet and to make things for my preschooler, but she's never ventured beyond scarves and afghans. The designs in this book are so cute and the instructions so clear that she will finally be able to make some sweaters! Hmmm...which one to ask for 1st? Now if I can only get her to consistently put her "made by.." tags on things.

After you read this "guide to finishing sweaters", you won't fear the final steps of producing a wonderful garment for yourself or gift giving.
Easy to understand, and presented in a matter of fact way.
You'll be so proud of yourself once you complete the last touches to that sweater. Think about it, you worked on it for so long, just a bit longer and you are done. I really felt more at ease once I read this guide. Enjoy!!!!

There are so many designs in here and they are done for the sewing allergic folks like me. If you love to make kids'sweaters but hate sewing them up, this is the book you need. Even if you love the sewing you will find designs in here you want to make. There are different sorts of designs like the little Chanel jacket and the sweater like a jeans jacket. This book is well worth its price.

Okay. You've got limited time, but you want to knit a GREAT sweater for your beloved, special child. Grab this wonderful book and go for it! The sweaters in this book are so colorful, unique, fun - and - easy to knit! What more could you ask for? I just finished the "comb" sweater, and it looks amazing! If you are "on the fence" regarding which pattern book to buy, your dilemma is solved with this book! Enjoy.

This is one purchase I didn't regret. Although the book is small in size all the designs are very nice and I would like to do most of them. The instructions are very good with schematics. It has 19 patterns the first is a top down raglan sweater in two versions one striped yoke pattern and the other in broad stripes allover, for boys but of course with different colors it will be suitable for girls also. The second sweater is sweater with vertical stripes knit in one piece. There is also a cardigan that is made in made in one piece also. There also patterns for accessories for a pair of socks, a cute jester's hat a bag with a sun motif and a pillow with the same motif that could be coordinated with the sun sweater. This sweater has a very clever idea the motif is knitted on a separate placket that buttons on top of the sweater and there are 7 more motifs that can be knitted so the sweater can have a different appearance each time a child wears it.

A firm favourite

Although we live in New Zealand I have married into a Dutch family. I kept borrowing this book from our local library and was lucky enough to spot it when it was put in a withdrawn library books sale. I couldn't believe my luck!

This is not a fancy book, which adds to it's charm as the jumpers were designed to be practical and solid and warm. The history and photos alongside the patterns, and the instructions which make it possible to create a jumper all of your own makes this one of my favourite knitting books to leaf through.

I also particularly like the way the patterns are placed in their geographical settings. I eventually plan to design and knit my children jumpers out of this book, when they are a little bigger so they don't grow straight out of them. While the tiny place their Oma grew up in is not in the book there are enough hints at the styles for that area to make me feel confident I can do something that is representative of that location.

It is an absolute gem of a book.

Dutch sea sweaters in a comprehensive volume for knitters

Review Date: 2006-03-12
While many knitters associate fisherman sweaters with the Aran Isles and Guernsey (one of the Channel Isles), the knitters of the Netherlands make similar sweaters to Guernseys in many wonderful patterns based solely on knit and purl, with occasional cables and lace (yarn-over) designs.

The basic structure of the Dutch fisherman's sweater is a patterned or textured yoke with a plain knit body. The structure is a tube with drop shoulder sleeves, similar to Norwegian sweaters. Color is not used, instead, indigo dye or natural wool is used.

The sweaters bear a strong resemblence to British sweaters, due to a strong trade route between the Dutch and British trading Dutch cured herring for sweaters in the Shetlands. Since the Shetland knitters came from Norway originally, this accounts for the similar construction.

This book has many stitch patterns, the method to construct an authentic fisherman's sweater the Dutch way, and many photos of Dutch fishermen and children wearing the garments in vintage photos as well. A rare book, well worth adding to any serious knitter's library.

Excellent Reference Book

This book is such an excellent textbook to study color knitting. The authors not only show twenty-one beautiful patterns with multiple size, but also encourage readers to create their own color design throughout the book. They explain how to develop motifs; they start from examining "dots", "lines", "diagonal lines", or "mirror images" and so on. And then how to create repeats and how to create on sweaters in Norwegian and Nordic tradition. So many charts are shown that it is a resourceful design book as well. The shapes of the sweaters shown are also traditional of its kind; mostly dropped sleeves and dolman-shaped sleeves. It also employs sleeking technique like in traditional fair isle type of sweaters. The bookfs focus is color, which is not very traditional, but is very modern. If you like KENZO type of colors, you will love all of their patterns. Every one of them in the book is as striking as the one shown on the cover. I obtained a second hand book, since it was the only available one. It pays me much more than its cost.

Good, no great, book!

The Norwegian ladies have done it again. This book is wonderful. Elizabeth Zimmerman herself would be proud of what these two gals have done. This book includes basics on designing knitwear, the Norwegian-way. Of course, many of their color schemes are definately NOT traditional AND they work! For the blind follower, the sweaters photographed in the book have patterns that faithfully reproduce the sweater in question.

They really have a great way of approaching this topic. check the book out.

A great book, not only for the beginner but also the person who has been knitting for years. One important thing to me is learning to organize my projects and to keep detailed notes... this book will do that and more. The sweater schematics are exceptionally good. I have the original edition, it is worn beyond repair. Thank you Cheryl for all the time and talent you put into this book. Beverly Kaufman, Sedro-Woolley,WA

Fascinating, entertaining, and instructive, Sweater 101 is full of details, examples, and shortcuts explaining how to get from an idea to a finished sweater. Cheryl Brunette writes in a style that is easy to follow; instructions are laced with bits of humor and personal experience. From determining gauge, to figuring increases and decreases, everything is presented in a step-by-step fashion. It doesn't matter how many sweaters you have knitted--this book will help with the next one!!!!!

File this book under "Why didn't I think of this stuff first?" -- but go buy it now and make up for lost time! Sweater Surgery: How to Make New Things With Old Sweaters is a gold mine of crafty ideas!
