A great Manga.. slow and fast pacedReview Date: 2008-04-09
Luffy wants to be the king of pirates, and he has to get the treasure of One Piece. But first, he must get a crew. This is where Zoro comes in. A bounty hunter arrested for saving a little girl from Captain Morgan of the Navy's son's dogs. After Zoro joins the crew, Zoro saves a shipwrecked crew of Captain Buggy, who is also a rubber man. Did I mention that Luffy ate the devil's fruit and now he's like rubber? No? Whatever.
This is an excellent volume. It's one of the best Shonen Manga up to date, but probably not the best. The scenes are better than those dry, desert lands like Trigun. There is humor, and it moves pretty fast paced except when Luffy tries to rescue Zoro and does.
Monkey D. Luffy, aspiring king of the piratesReview Date: 2008-01-03
Now, come on, what can be cooler than pirates? Oda kicks off his popular manga series in a way that kind of surprises me: we get the backstory of Monkey D. Luffy, King of the Pirates, before we actually get to the plot. (Well, okay, there's a page or two that sets up the hidden trasure for which the series is named.) A truly pleasant surprise, that-- a manga that actually goes in chronological order! Romance Dawn is the story of how Luffy became a pirate in the first place, his amusing beginnings with his first boat, and the recruiting of his first partner (Zoro). If you've been watching One Piece on Cartoon Network, it's definitely worth digging into the manga-- especially if you wandered in halfway through, like I did. *** ½

I have read Ms. Bruce's works in other birth publications and this is a great guide. It is a quick read - but a must-read - especially if you are birthing in a hospital, with an obstetrician.

Shonen Jump Manga MagicReview Date: 2005-11-08
This collection is a great start for those of you who are interested in reading manga, or for those of you who missed out on some of the earlier issues of Shonen Jump and want to catch up on what's going on. It also has the beginnings to the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z mangas, which can't be found in Shonen Jump.
Below is a listing of the manga in this box, as well as a small description of each:
(1) Dragon Ball: This is the start of the Dragon Ball world. It explains the origins of Goku and his relationship with the Dragon Balls.
(2) Dragon Ball Z: The beginning of one of the greatest animes ever in its purest form. Unpolluted with minutes-long shouting and infested with excellent action and story, this details the story of Goku as a father and a husband, as well as following some of the other favorites of the Dragon Ball world.
(3) Naruto: Probably the best in Shonen Jump, Naruto is a tale of a boy fox-demon who wants nothing more than to earn his place in the world, and does so by training to become a ninja, despite the mistrust directed at him by some of his teacher and the hatred he receives from his fellow students.
(4) One Piece: A boy eats the mysterious Devil Fruit at a young age, making his body into rubber and also cursing his body: should he ever fall into water, he would sink instantly to the bottom. Despite that, he wants nothing more than to be the pirate king of a world of oceans.
(5) Shaman King: Yoh, a boy who can not only see ghosts but control them, comes to Tokyo to train to become a powerful shaman in the hopes that one day he'll win the title of Shaman King.
(6) Yu-Gi-Oh!: A story of constant morals and themes, it details a young, pint-sized, pointy-haired boy's struggles with a mysterious puzzle/necklace that grants him dark super powers as well as an alter-ego.
(7) YuYu Hakusho: A juvenile delinquent dies saving a child and finds out that his next was entirely unexpected and therefore gains a chance to come back to life. What he later finds out is coming back to life also makes him a spirit detective.

A True Hero!Review Date: 2002-11-30
Well really who did not hear about this awful accident.
I had no idea he had written a book, until I went to
the gift shop at North Memorial and had been a patient
there. Right on the counter was his book. Bought it,
read it in 2 days. It is hard to take at times as he
mentions the operations etc. You relize what he went
through beyond the spotlights. And it was not nice at
times, but he held on. What was so sad when his dog
died, Tuffy was the one who licked his face when his
arms were torn off and awoke him. Tuffy was his hero.
John is a hero and will always be a hero in my heart. Also
he had signed the book!

How can you go wrong with a floating kitchen?Review Date: 2008-02-12
It's time to conclude the Baratie storyline-- or is it? The pirate who got himself a free meal in For Whom the Bell Tolls has turned out to be a member of Don Krieg's crew-- and Don Krieg has just returned from the Grand Line, giving Luffy some much-needed information while he continues trying to recruit a cook for his crew. Meanwhile, interesting things are going on in the chapter endpieces (the "Buggy's Crew: The Aftermath" bits that you thought were just Oda having some fun doodling) that could end up having major consequences as time goes on. One Piece is as strong as ever. ****

New foes, friends, and desertersReview Date: 2005-06-14
Honestly, the Baratie arc is one of my least favorites, as there's not much variety in the scenery and the battles become very dragged out. However, vol. 6 contains a host of important plot points that are essential reading. Don Krieg, the villain of the arc, is introduced. He's one of the few villains who doesn't use devil fruit powers, and instead relies on technological weaponry. The other new pirate is "Hawk Eyes" Mihawk, one of the seven most powerful pirates on the ocean. His honour duel with Zoro is the centerpiece of the volume, and further develops Zoro's motivations while just being a really cool fight. Finally, during the chaos Nami steals the Merry Go (Going Merry) and takes off, setting up the next storyline in the saga. Oh yea and Sanji, the next Straw Hat crew, is also further spotlighted. There's a lot going on here, making vol. 6 worth picking up.

Harrowing History OvercomeReview Date: 2004-07-15
At the centre of the story are the years she and her parents spent crouched in a tiny, improvised lean-to provided by a kindly Polish farmer. It is not a spectacular story but it is a very human one and it deserves to be added to the body of literature remebering those events. It is also inspirational as to what people can achieve with persistence, love and luck.
I originally reviewed this book for bookpleasures.com and I am happy to provide a further testament here.

the one One Piece manga you have to haveReview Date: 2008-07-17
Pretty well translated.Review Date: 2008-07-01
This volume chronicles the point of the Straw Hats journey from when they encounter Mr. 2 Bon Clay, a flamboyant ballerina man, to Luffy's and Vivi's resolution to go straight to Sir Crocodile's headquarters and take him out. Along the way, Luffy and crew meet the awesome Portgaz D. Ace and travel the harsh desert of Alabasta only to discover ghost towns that have been eradicated by endless sandstorms, plus the backstory of Princess Vivi and Koza, and the members of Crocodile's Baroque Works join together to meet their boss and initiate their final plan, Operation Utopia.
This is a pretty thick volume, one of the thickest released. There is lots of content in this volume, and it will disappoint you to see that the next volume won't be released until October. As I said, this volume is pretty well translated, and of course, this part of the story sets up so much for the rest of the arc. I recommend this one.
