The art style is ugly and (usually) unrealistic, but at least it's unique. This is a very original manga; the author obviously has a great gift for storytelling. It's worth the buy.

Monkey D. Luffy wants to be King of the Pirates. He has always had this dream, from when he was a kid, and now he is off on a small boat armed with a large heart and a rubber body. Yes, a rubber boy. You see, he ate the fruit of the gum-gum tree which turned him into a boy of rubber. And now he must go forth, fighting pirates and the law, to find the One Piece, the greatest treasure in the world. The problem is nobody knows where it it and he has no training in navigation.

One piece is one of the most popular Shonen Jump mangas, and Eiichiro Oda is still managing to make new volumes of the series. After re-reading this volume, I have came to the conclusion that this is a series that I want to be a fan of. Everything was well plotted. Luffy reminds me a little bit of the young Goku of Dragon Ball. There is quite a bit of humor, but it didn't really make me laugh. It did, however, make the scenes better.

Luffy wants to be the king of pirates, and he has to get the treasure of One Piece. But first, he must get a crew. This is where Zoro comes in. A bounty hunter arrested for saving a little girl from Captain Morgan of the Navy's son's dogs. After Zoro joins the crew, Zoro saves a shipwrecked crew of Captain Buggy, who is also a rubber man. Did I mention that Luffy ate the devil's fruit and now he's like rubber? No? Whatever.

This is an excellent volume. It's one of the best Shonen Manga up to date, but probably not the best. The scenes are better than those dry, desert lands like Trigun. There is humor, and it moves pretty fast paced except when Luffy tries to rescue Zoro and does.

Eiichiro Oda, One Piece: Romance Dawn (ViZ, 1997)

Now, come on, what can be cooler than pirates? Oda kicks off his popular manga series in a way that kind of surprises me: we get the backstory of Monkey D. Luffy, King of the Pirates, before we actually get to the plot. (Well, okay, there's a page or two that sets up the hidden trasure for which the series is named.) A truly pleasant surprise, that-- a manga that actually goes in chronological order! Romance Dawn is the story of how Luffy became a pirate in the first place, his amusing beginnings with his first boat, and the recruiting of his first partner (Zoro). If you've been watching One Piece on Cartoon Network, it's definitely worth digging into the manga-- especially if you wandered in halfway through, like I did. *** ½

I've recently looked up Elliot Essman's Building Yourself after having come across the book in a second-hand bookshop. It seems that no matter which of the (numbered) sections you turn to, his crisp writing clears your head. He's got the whole thing on the web now in a revised version at buildingyourself.com/build along with a lot of other success material I've been able to really use in my insurance sales practice. Not too many "success" books can really help someone who is already motivated, but I like the choppy, unsentimental way this is written.

I keep becoming absorbed in big parts of this book, and one day I'm going to read it from cover to cover. I cannot relate to everything the author covers, but different parts keep grabbing me. I don't know how else to describe this book. It's always there for me. I love the quotes. I keep it by my bed. I want everyone I know to have a copy.

Many people have the ambition to succeed but lack a game plan to achieve that success. The author creatively guides and helps you formulate that game plan that we are all too inexperienced or fearful to do on our own. I believe he is able to do this extremely well because of his knowledge and `feel' for the intricacies of our human nature. He understands our fears and senses our potential. Through `Building Yourself' the author deftly leads us step by step towards realizing our ambition.

Instead of wasting time on What to Expect and the Girlfriend's Guide, this is what women should be reading. We all put "no episiotomy" on our birth plans - now read exactly why and how to set yourself up for a birth without one.

I have read Ms. Bruce's works in other birth publications and this is a great guide. It is a quick read - but a must-read - especially if you are birthing in a hospital, with an obstetrician.

Shonen Jump Manga Magic
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-08
This is easily the best collection of Americanized manga out. As most know, Shonen Jump was at one time a Japanese exclusive magazine that made its hop across the Pacific in 2003 for American fans to enjoy. Since that moment, it's become the best in manga and now contains a majority of the manga juggernauts.

This collection is a great start for those of you who are interested in reading manga, or for those of you who missed out on some of the earlier issues of Shonen Jump and want to catch up on what's going on. It also has the beginnings to the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z mangas, which can't be found in Shonen Jump.

Below is a listing of the manga in this box, as well as a small description of each:

(1) Dragon Ball: This is the start of the Dragon Ball world. It explains the origins of Goku and his relationship with the Dragon Balls.

(2) Dragon Ball Z: The beginning of one of the greatest animes ever in its purest form. Unpolluted with minutes-long shouting and infested with excellent action and story, this details the story of Goku as a father and a husband, as well as following some of the other favorites of the Dragon Ball world.

(3) Naruto: Probably the best in Shonen Jump, Naruto is a tale of a boy fox-demon who wants nothing more than to earn his place in the world, and does so by training to become a ninja, despite the mistrust directed at him by some of his teacher and the hatred he receives from his fellow students.

(4) One Piece: A boy eats the mysterious Devil Fruit at a young age, making his body into rubber and also cursing his body: should he ever fall into water, he would sink instantly to the bottom. Despite that, he wants nothing more than to be the pirate king of a world of oceans.

(5) Shaman King: Yoh, a boy who can not only see ghosts but control them, comes to Tokyo to train to become a powerful shaman in the hopes that one day he'll win the title of Shaman King.

(6) Yu-Gi-Oh!: A story of constant morals and themes, it details a young, pint-sized, pointy-haired boy's struggles with a mysterious puzzle/necklace that grants him dark super powers as well as an alter-ego.

(7) YuYu Hakusho: A juvenile delinquent dies saving a child and finds out that his next was entirely unexpected and therefore gains a chance to come back to life. What he later finds out is coming back to life also makes him a spirit detective.

I was living far from North Dakota when the news about John Thompson's accident became national news ten years ago. Like many, I was struck by John's courage and the inspiration it brought to all who heard it. Many of us wonder how we would deal with a traumatic accident like this to ourselves or to a loved one. John Thompson's book honestly tells us the story behind the headlines and how he has struggled to overcome both the physical and emotional challenges this accident brought him. As difficult as this must have been for him to write, he has given a gift to anyone who has survived a similar ordeal. His story is a must-read. Once I started, I couldn't put the book down!

Being from the midwest I had heard about John Thompson.
Well really who did not hear about this awful accident.
I had no idea he had written a book, until I went to
the gift shop at North Memorial and had been a patient
there. Right on the counter was his book. Bought it,
read it in 2 days. It is hard to take at times as he
mentions the operations etc. You relize what he went
through beyond the spotlights. And it was not nice at
times, but he held on. What was so sad when his dog
died, Tuffy was the one who licked his face when his
arms were torn off and awoke him. Tuffy was his hero.
John is a hero and will always be a hero in my heart. Also
he had signed the book!

Eiichiro Oda, One Piece: The Oath (ViZ, 1997)

It's time to conclude the Baratie storyline-- or is it? The pirate who got himself a free meal in For Whom the Bell Tolls has turned out to be a member of Don Krieg's crew-- and Don Krieg has just returned from the Grand Line, giving Luffy some much-needed information while he continues trying to recruit a cook for his crew. Meanwhile, interesting things are going on in the chapter endpieces (the "Buggy's Crew: The Aftermath" bits that you thought were just Oda having some fun doodling) that could end up having major consequences as time goes on. One Piece is as strong as ever. ****

I can sum this up in one word: kewl. It starts out with Luffy's employment as choreboy to the Barate Oceangoing Restaurant and then the appearance of Don Krieg, leader of 50 pirate crews. He prepares to challenge "Red Shoes" Zeff for his logbook of his travels at the Grand Line, when suddenly a mysterious new character appears, the world-renowned Dracule "Hawk-eyes" Mihawk. Zoro has been waiting his entire life to defeat this man, and so he challenges him to a duel. I won't spoil it, but you have got to get yourself a copy of One Piece: The Oath. Luffy only uses two Gum-gum moves - Gum-gum rocket and giant scythe - but the swordplay is unbelievable. Zoro displays several of his best moves, Onigiri Demon Cut, Tiger Hunt, and Three Sword Style --- Secret Move Three Thousand Worlds. Make sure to pick up a coupon before you buy this manga!

Picking up from where vol. 5 left off, vol. 6 of One Piece finds the Staw Hat crew aboard the ocean restaurant Baratie, where Luffy has to work as a bus boy after injuring the head chef with a rogue cannonball.

Honestly, the Baratie arc is one of my least favorites, as there's not much variety in the scenery and the battles become very dragged out. However, vol. 6 contains a host of important plot points that are essential reading. Don Krieg, the villain of the arc, is introduced. He's one of the few villains who doesn't use devil fruit powers, and instead relies on technological weaponry. The other new pirate is "Hawk Eyes" Mihawk, one of the seven most powerful pirates on the ocean. His honour duel with Zoro is the centerpiece of the volume, and further develops Zoro's motivations while just being a really cool fight. Finally, during the chaos Nami steals the Merry Go (Going Merry) and takes off, setting up the next storyline in the saga. Oh yea and Sanji, the next Straw Hat crew, is also further spotlighted. There's a lot going on here, making vol. 6 worth picking up.

Hannah Podob has told in admirably clear and unaffected prose her childhood and family history as a survivor of the Holocaust and its impact upon her, her family and the people she knew. Without sentimentality, she recalls her parents and the difficulties they overcame to be together. The rise of the Nazis provides a sinister shadow to her childhood and, like most Jewish people, Hannah and her family try to escape from their home in Warsaw before they are imprisoned or worse.

At the centre of the story are the years she and her parents spent crouched in a tiny, improvised lean-to provided by a kindly Polish farmer. It is not a spectacular story but it is a very human one and it deserves to be added to the body of literature remebering those events. It is also inspirational as to what people can achieve with persistence, love and luck.

I originally reviewed this book for bookpleasures.com and I am happy to provide a further testament here.

A treasure of a book!

"The Sky in One Piece" is a small tale of one family's heroic escape from the Nazis, that will leave an enormous impression on your heart. Told in a child's voice, the reader follows the journey of the author and her parents, depicting the everyday occurrences before and during their flight from persecution by the Nazis because they were Jewish. Unlike other depictions of the horror of the Holocaust, Hannah Podob has you share in her innocent version of the hardships her family endured, as only someone could because she was loved and protected by close and loving parents. With humor along with the scattering of harsh news reports of the day, readers will follow one family who with love and spirit did triumph and endure to find freedom and life in America.

This is the volume of One Piece that sets it apart from all other manga on the market. One Piece brings an intense amount of emotion into it's stories, and this is by far the most gripping. Nami's past is one you will never forget when your done reading it. These essences of emotion are shown all throughout One Piece and they bring make you truly connect with the characters, which is something many manga fail at doing. I know not everyone is pleased with Viz's One Piece translating efforts, but I'm very happy that they've stayed true to the original story and not caved in to random and pointless edits like the 4Kids tv version. Nami's full backstory is in this volume, and it's the most powerful and emotional moment in the series thus far. This (and volume 10) are where One Piece make the transition from good to great.

A strong recommendation, hope Viz starts putting out volumes faster.

I've got a secret. Though your kids will love this book (mine did) it's not really for them--it's for all the longing for a night all to themselves. Though the Large family are elephants, you will relate to them all the way through. I love the clever illustrations--especially the look on Mr. and Mrs. Larges' faces when they finally slip out the door.

(This is the second book I've gotten in this series. The one I first read, "A Quiet Night in (Little Favourites)" is still my favorite).

Number 18 has the wonderful pleasure of introducing Ace, Luffy's older brother. this is seriously one of the funniest and most entertaining of all the One Piece manga. Ace is one awesome character even if his appearance is a short one. We get to see all sorts of D brother wackiness, Luffy gets smacked by Vivi and we learn who Mr.0 is. One Awesome Manga. Go get it.

Pretty well translated.

One Piece is my favorite series, due to its creative design, comic insanity, and superb character development. That said, over time, the Viz Media translation of the manga has disappointed me more than once, as Viz sometimes softens dialog with poor choices of insults, threats, and exclamations. However, this particular volume of One Piece is one of the best written released so far. Having read this section online at a fan-scan site, and having watched a subbed episode of anime of these events, I can honestly say that the translator/writer for this piece understands that child-like language is not particularly welcome.(Viz rotates translators, which results in inaccuracies in subsequent volumes)

This volume chronicles the point of the Straw Hats journey from when they encounter Mr. 2 Bon Clay, a flamboyant ballerina man, to Luffy's and Vivi's resolution to go straight to Sir Crocodile's headquarters and take him out. Along the way, Luffy and crew meet the awesome Portgaz D. Ace and travel the harsh desert of Alabasta only to discover ghost towns that have been eradicated by endless sandstorms, plus the backstory of Princess Vivi and Koza, and the members of Crocodile's Baroque Works join together to meet their boss and initiate their final plan, Operation Utopia.

This is a pretty thick volume, one of the thickest released. There is lots of content in this volume, and it will disappoint you to see that the next volume won't be released until October. As I said, this volume is pretty well translated, and of course, this part of the story sets up so much for the rest of the arc. I recommend this one.
