We Found This Book Helpful Nearly 20 Years Ago

My wife and I appreciated this volume just a few years after it was originally released (our first child was born in 1985). It offers sound medical and relational advice from a Christian perspective and answered many of our questions.

We especially appreciated the early sections, including "nurturing a newborn child" and "treating a sick child" (with about 120 page "problem solver"). This book is helpful for the first time parent.

Although we had no problem with the latter part of the book on child-rearing, the truly unique sections are the ones mentioned.

This would make a great gift for an expecting mother!

My partner and I were very impressed with this book, as first time parents we weren't sure what to expect and this book gives you a run down month by month. It is amazing comparing what your baby can do and what the book says they should be doing. The Guide also gives helpful information about sleeping, teething for example. The best thing about this book however is that it gives you the basic guidelines and is not long winded like many baby help book.

This book is a great start when you are planning how to set up your infant/toddler classroom. I love the examples of what you might find in each area. I did not get much of a chance to look at it before it was snagged by one of the toddler teachers I supervise!

This is an excellent book to help you with any sleep issues your baby/toddler is having. There is common sense step by step guides to multiple sleep situations, and sensible case studies that one can easily relate too and follow the advice for their own situation. My baby is 7 months and happily sleeps from 6.45pm to when I wake her at 7.30ish the next morning. Based on Gina's advice, my husband and I have our evenings together, and a happy contented baby during the day. Perfect! This book helped iron out the kinks in our schedule and I am sure it will be a handy reference guide for the future if any other sleep situations arise.

We bought this book used when we were expecting our second child. He had been pre-diagnosed through ultrasound has having Left-sided diaphragmatic hernia. This book is the only book that has any information about this defect. My husband and I read it thoroughly. It is rather old but if you are expecting a cdh baby and want to read the history of the treatment and how far medical science has come (at least up to the point when this book was published) while you are waiting, this would be a good book. I must interject here that if you doctor has told you there is no hope (and most doctors still believe there isn't) don't listen to him/her. Get educated and help your baby. It won't be perfect but it will likely be better than the doctor says.

Good Food for Baby

Review Date: 2005-11-18
This is my favorite baby cookbook. It seems to be a sensible approach to feeding your baby real food. Ms. Blunos' gift for creating food that feels good in your mouth is incredible. Her recipes are generally only a couple of steps. She isn't afraid to introduce baby to some mild spices-it's nice to know that my baby's food has some flavor.

While some of the common British ingredients (rutabaga, parsnips, and leeks) are a tad exotic in my kitchen, it has been worth the effort to find them as they create the texture and gentle taste that my baby likes. American cooks may have to look up a few words as the recipes call for swede (rutabaga), marrow (summer squash), and aubergine (eggplant).

The recipes generally make 6-8 servings, which freeze well for later use. Ingredients measurements are given by weight (ounces and grams), so a kitchen scale is handy. Many of the recipes are suitable for the adult palate as well.

The Forms of Relatedness That Make Us Human
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 22 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-07
This is a terrific and groundbreaking book. Peter Hobson presents a radical and scientifically coherent view of the development of intersubjectivity and its relation to symbolic forms of meaning. He carefully details the developmental science that requires a fully social and sharing human child as the medium for the emergence of consciousness. In laying out his arguments he offers a comprehensive overview of the research base on early relatedness-- from face-to-face affective communication, to social referencing, to language, to theory of mind, to the evolutionary background of these human capacities. In the way that he brings together relatedness and symbolic meaning he seamlessly heals the Cartesian split between mind and body and in doing so also heals the rift between self and other that has been the conceptual error of the 20th century.
This is a paradigm shift that can unite scientists and clinicians alike. His insights anticipate the emerging findings from affective neuroscience and provide a context for understanding why and how the social brain has evolved. And he is a pleasure to read. His writing is in equal parts incisive exploration and pure poetry. I recommend it highly.
