Mrs. Oberon is not, by her actions, an ordinary grandmother. When her son, Scrimshaw, calls her in distress because his son Sweeny is teething, there's only one thing that could help:

A cock-a-hoop honey cake!

In order to deliver the cake, Mrs. Oberon must navigate the Riff-Raff rapids, the Swagwallow Swamp and then take to the air in her Piper Cherokee. She accomplishes her mission, and all are happy once again..

The overwhelming message this book communicates is a grandmother's strong love.

My son just loves this book! It's the kind of book you can feel good about reading to your child!

Excellent Book for New Parents!

Other than the scary clown hair on the baby on the cover--this is a really helpful guide to a new baby's cognitive and physical development! It's much more practical than some of the other more popular titles that I have read. The information is very clear, concise and extremely well organized. It breaks a baby's developmental stages down into 3-month blocks, which makes more sense to me than the month-by-month formats of other books--since babies all develop at a slightly different pace. I highly recommend this title for all parents who are interested in better understanding how their baby is developing!

Bye Bye Baby: A Sad Story with a Happy Ending
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

I started reading this book to my first child eight years ago. The anticipation grew after the first few times reading it, and he would happily join in the conversation with the cat, the teddy, the wind-up hen, and the Old Uncle; until finally YES! he found a Mommy. How joyful! Then he found a Daddy and his family was complete. Now my three year old daughter joins in on the fun. I've loved this book from the first read, and never tire of the little boy's sad story with a happy ending. Janet and Allen Ahlberg are masterful, in their artistry and their storytelling. Worth reading to all our children for many generations!

Canada's Baby Care Book is a great new reference available for those looking for guidance on caring for infants. The book is up-to-date and filled with color photos to supplement the text. I found the book to be non-judgemental and accepting of the notion that there are many ways to successfully raise children. An excellent resource for new parents or seasoned veterans looking for more information.

The surgical correction of congenital heart disease, during the last 30 years has gone from infantile and largely experimental to a mature art. The change in mortality among children suffering from these conditions during this period of time is nothing short of awesome. Conditions that were universally fatal in the first year of life before 1970 are now routinely cured with followup data now entering well into adulthood. It is hard to imagine that it is now twenty years since the first successful surgical treatment of a child with hypoplastic leaft heart syndrome, and that this most dreaded anomaly is now successfully treated in over 80% of cases in some centers.

It is likewise hard to imagine any individual who had a greater impact on surgical repair of congenital heart disease than the senior author of this book. I say this with some bias, as I was fortunate enough to have him operate on my son who was born with transposition of the great vessels while I was a fellow in Pediatric Cardiology. He and his coauthors are universally recognized as leaders in the field, and their authorship of this book is nothing short of masterful.

This work is an essential reference for all who treat children with congenital heart disease. All current surtical techniques are discussed and well illustrated. Its publication in 1994 may miss some modern nuances, as endoscopic approaches to repair, but all of it is here. The text does not dwell on diagnostic techniques - for those, it would be better to look at Garson or Moss. This book is directed solely at the surgery, and that it does well. Illustrations are clear. Surgical considerations, including intraoperative and posoperative concerns are well discussed. The data describing surgical results is compehensive through its publication date. Anyone doing a fellowship in pediatric cardiology cardiology will spend some time with this book, and it does not need my recommendation to know that it will find its way onto the bookshelf of most pediatric cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons.

This small child protection guide book answers a lingering call. In such a chaotic child protection service with its disjointed organisation and disparate proffesionals this guide provides much needed clarity. It's beauty lies in its brevity. For proffesionals uncertain of procedures or signs of abuse this guide is clear, erudite, accessible and comprehensive. Written by two practising professionals it has the added benefit of experience. For any health service workers this is a reference book that every person must have. And in wider society, anyone who cares for the well-being of children should read this book. It unravels some difficult signs of abuse and provides a clear course of action for any coming across an abused child. A much needed, welcomed and hopefully widely read book. Magisterial performance.

Rich, phenomenological descriptions of childhood realities
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-04
Eva Simms writes with incredible clarity about the experiential realities of the world of childhood, and has achieved what is, in all practicalities, the only worthwhile book on the phenomenology of childhood ever written, period. The book is a remarkable achievement, and the many years of careful, slow and methodical reflection on the data of children's experiences is plainly evident to any discerning reader. What Eva's work reveals is how childhood experience is especially and uniquely revealing of the essential structures of human experience as they are rooted in our existential condition, as embodied, temporal, social beings. And these insights provide a foundation for any psychology which hopes to take human experience, and children, seriously -- which is to say, on their own terms.
