Every American Obstetrician Should Read This Book

As an L&D nurse, I have witnessed my fair share of medically managed labors and surgically assisted births. I also deal with
the mangled mothers and stunned newborns left behind as the OB hurries off to their next "job." American/western hospital
labor and birth is so far from normal it's shocking. How refreshing to read this book and learn how women's needs in birth
can be met and safety and health can be a priority as well. Dr Odent describes the needs of women and how to meet them during
pregnancy and birth delightfully. It is a fascinating and informative read.

This book is recommended by Dr Spock, Dr Dodson, and Norman Cousins. An extraordinarily sensitive book on what it feels like
to become a father in gradual steps. An invaluable guide to fatherhood, because a baby needs a nuturing father too!

Brilliant, Strengthening Novel

John Bennett's novel, Bodo, is a history of our time, via the life of a relatively normal youth traumatized first by invading
and occupying forces in his native Germany, immediately after World War II, then by normal, dysfunctional family and community
life in small city Texas, then by the implosion of the California hippie rebellion.
I can't decide which is more impressive, Bennett's brilliant artistry--mostly acute naturalism, interspersed by superbly lucid short-hand imagery--or his understanding of a soul, and of the America in which that soul tries, first, to fit in, then to transform it for the better by single-handedly making a miracle, then, again, to fit in, then, one more time, to break through despite convention.
The main character, Bodo, occasionally thrives, for instance as a popular and influential disc jockey in Louisiana, with a lover and possessions most youths would envy. But he drives away in a sport car, or rides a motorcycle away from success, just as he drives or motorcycles away, or escapes from his crashes into normal and abnormal failures or torment by people who will not put up with anyone ignoring the conventions of, or attempting to transform what they have adapted to, which depends on everyone agreeing that absolutely anything else is dangerous, perverse, wrong, crazy.
If you're struggling to keep something alive, in a what's now a world-wide society that depends on what you're trying to keep alive being either killed or forced to keep itself entirely hidden, this book will help you survive without participating in the conspiracy to kill off what you value most, in your self. It's very sober, beautiful, enlightening, disturbing, stunning. Hungry for such--it's so rare and valuable--I read it straight through, ten hours.

I purchased the book when I was pregnant with my son in England. I was very grateful for Jolly's no-nonsense approach to
child rearing. For example, Jolly explains in this book that babies don't really need to be burped. Apparently, this is
a Western society invention. Few cultures outside of Western society rub or tap their babies after they take their bottles
since gas comes up naturally without the need to pound on their backs. Jolly also advises that if your baby will take a bottle
cold, straight from the refrigerator, then it's ok-- there is no scientific reason for it to be warmed. This saved me hours
of sleep since my son was happy to have a cold bottle. Another pearl of wisdom was his advice to bring the baby in bed with
you if you need to get some sleep. My son breast fed in our bed as I fell back to sleep. Our son is a healthy adult, soon
to be a police officer. He seems to have survived just fine thanks to this book. Jolly gives sound advice that makes parenting
during that first year a heck of a lot easier. I worshiped the man for letting parents off the hook...

This book is filled with beginning songs and circle games. I use these songs in my music classes grades k,1,2 and 3. The
songs cover concepts such as steady beat, sol-mi-la, quarter note, eighth notes and so much more. My students learn and
have a good time while playing and singing these songs.

The songs and rhymes in this book are fantastic. I have used them in my pre-k classes for the past four years with wonderful
results, especially with my special needs students. This rich anthology of literature has enriched my curriculum and my children's
lives. When asking for suggestions from the children (or other teachers), they will always include songs from this collection.
The children easily learn the songs, then go home and try to teach their parents or siblings the songs as well. I am sure
that my language delayed students are progressing so well because of the songs and rhymes that I have learned from all of
Dr. Feierabend's books. If you work with young children or have little ones of your own, you should have this book.
