As a working mom I don't have time to read very much, but I know it's important to really understand what is going on with my child as she develops. This book is great, and the next book about two year olds is even better. It is so helpful to understand why some issues are so challenging at this age and to get ideas for what to do!

excellent for both parents

I loved this book, but even better it was the only book I could get my husband to read and he really liked it too (I could just mark a couple of short chapters and he didn't have to read everything.) We are doing a much better job as parents now that we agree more about what is "normal" for a one year old!

This is a great resource for parents! I like how it encourages you to get to know your baby as an individual so that you can know how to respond. I've noticed how different kids react so differently to the same situations...now I understand better why that's so. This book can save parents a lot of headaches in frustration over figuring out their kids.

As a parent, I've read lots of parenting books. Most of them seem to tell you what to think and what to do, and often give advice that doesn't really fit for me or my children. But this one encourages you to think for yourself, and to really observe and understand your child, to figure out what works with him or her. I love it. Reading it is like having a chance to talk things over with someone who really knows what being a parent is like. I felt very helped by it, and very much liked the authors respectful tone.

All this, and it's short, and easily readible - very important for tired, busy parents!

I think this is a wonderful book is perfect for mothers and fathers who have a child up to three years old.

This is a beautiful book.

Very simple with large photographs. It has that sort of honesty that is curiously absent from a lot of children's books - but this is not your ordinary children's book. We read it at bedtime to prep our 3 year old for his oncoming baby sister.

It was pretty amazing because the boy in the photos looks eerily similar to our son. He loved the book, and selected it from his stack most nights.

What was great was that we were able to reference the book at times when we experienced something similar to the book, and he was able to get through any rough spots by grabbing the book and getting excited about some difficult time he was having that happened in the book. I liked it, too, and didn't feel at all like it was a monotonous or boring read like many children's books.

We still read it occasionally, too, even though our daughter is already 1.

I recommend to any family preparing their child for a new baby.

This tender book is a must-read for expecting parents and siblings. It takes a child through the whole experience of gaining a sibling, from Mom's pregnancy to the birth, hospital visits, and baby's arrival home. The honest and heartfelt story is told from the perspective of the older brother, and shows children that it's OK to have mixed feelings and confusion about a new baby. Plus you'll get a chuckle at Mom & Dad's 70s-era style. My son and I loved reading this book, both before and after our new baby came to live with us.

Finally a book that is informative/non-judgemental on a variety issues, concise (which is extremely useful if the little one is already here!)and very enjoyable to read. Life After Baby really explores thoughfully pre-baby concerns, post-baby jitters, marriage questions, the issue of siblings, work choices...the bottom line is the book covers a wonderful spectrum. As a mother of two that enjoyed her professional career before children, this book helped me sort out what I wanted to do for my family at this time. I hope this helps other potential readers. Enjoy!

Life After Baby: What it's really like!

Life After Baby is an invaluable resource for new mothers and mothers of young children. I wish this book had been around when my son was born! (He is now 5.) Unlike other books about motherhood that stick with the facts, try to allay concerns or answer a myriad of questions, Life After Baby is about how it feels to be a mother--and all the attendant joys and fears. The author interviewed lots of women and brings their voices to the pages. Their experiences, their questions, their beliefs, their confusion, their love, all spill out from the chapters. I found the book thought-provoking and as I read it I felt less alone, less isolated. Motherhood is so exhausting and after reading this I felt energized. I highly recommend it for anyone who has pondered the meaning of motherhood! It would make a great gift for a new mom.

A very warm and delightful book to give as a gift, to remind us of life's lessons we never outgrow. Our teachers come in many forms and sometimes new parents need to be gently reminded of this. Our children 'raise' us too! An excellent suggestion for any gift regardless of the occassion.

This book mesmerized my 15 month old daughter. To an adult, it seems like it's about nothing. But it's a quiet simple description of a baby/toddler's day. We both like the cadence of the text, she loves pointing out things in the illustrations, and the book mirrors some of her experiences.
This is a great in-between book - she was getting bored with the simple board books, but wasn't ready for the wordier picture books. And some picture books are just beyond a toddler's scope of knowledge/understanding. Other books on this same in-between level are BABY TALK by Judy Hindley and TEN LITTLE FINGERS, TEN LITTLE TOES by Mem Fox. I hope Scott Beck writes more like this!

I just got this calendar for my 9 year old daughter for Christmas. She loves Littlest Pet Shop stuff. And she loves this calendar ~ she was really excited when she opened it up. The pictures for each month are really cute. It's a nice gift for any young girl, but if you know one who loves Littlest Pet Shop, you will thrill her if you get her this calendar.

After having decided to remove my 2 1/2 month old son from life support, this was the ONLY book I could find which dealt with our situation. Dr. Davis deals with this topic with such insight and sensitivity I felt like she must have been there with us every step of the way. Of all of the books which I was given on dealing with life after the death of a baby, this was the one which truly gave me comfort and helped me to find peace with the decisions we made about our son's care.

Must-read for NICU parents with life decisions to make.

This book wraps it's arms around you and hugs you oh so tight.

Dr. Davis changed my life with her book. In 1993, my husband and I were faced with the toughest decision of our lives -- to continue the fight for our son's life or not. Dr. Davis helped me to realize that no matter what decision we made at that point, we would question it -- That there were no easy choices to make. The line from the book that has stuck with me all these years is, "Were we prolonging life....or prolonging death in our attempts to keep our son here on this earth?"

Reading this book will help any parent, with a similar decision to make, come to terms with their decision. Anytime I begin to question our decision from years ago, I just reread Deborah's book, and I confirm that our decision was the most unselfish thing we've ever done in our lives.

May it bring peace to your souls, as well.

Carolyn
