This book is the greatest! I gave to my niece & friend whom are both pregnant. They were so pleased. It is not your average, dry, how-to "mom book." It is a quaint, clever, warm helpful guide compiled by a woman you can just tell is an amazing mother! I will give this book to everyone I know and all of pregnant Hollywood should grab this book now!!!! Monique Westbay gets my vote as Mama of the Year!!

I gave this book as a gift to my friend (who is a new mom). She phoned me soon after the birth, and told me that she is already using three of the tips in this book to keep her little girl comfortable. Many of the "manuals" I looked at were a bit cold and antiseptic, this adorable book is filled with warm, practical advice from other moms. I will give this little book again for sure.

A Short Story That's Tall In Stature

This short work of fiction is nearly indescribable - in a good way I mean. I'm not exactly certain what genre it would fall under. It's not quite fictionalized historical biography, and it's definitely not Sci-Fi. If you've read and enjoyed any Philip Roth, Italo Calvino, Thomas Pynchon, Jorge Louis Borges, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Don Delillo, Toni Morrison, or Philip K. Dick, then you will most definitely enjoy this.

Wh-wh-what? Oh, I get it. Oh, no I don't.

I enjoyed this book, although it frightened me. In fact, I found it frighteningly enjoyable.

The only author who I can readily compare this to is Matt Wall, who may have stolen most of his ideas from Mr. Ballard. We can only hope that Mr. Ballard wins several prizes for this work, and the respect of the literary world that he so richly deserves and didn't recieve with his earlier works.

Best How-To Book Ever!

Review Date: 2000-05-16
My pediatrican recommended this book when my now 13-year-old was born, and it's only slight hyperbole to say that my children are alive and well because Miriam Stoppard! The book gives very practical advice on how to wrap a baby, tips to dress a baby, how to bathe a baby, how to take a temperature, etc. My mother-in-law was in awe of my skills and never guessed that I was so proficient because I'd been reading the book before she came over! The book also has growth charts in the back where you can record your children's height and weight progress and compare it against several norms. I'm reviewing this book now because I'm on-line to order the upteenth copy for another friend who is expecting.

I love this author. She is very down-to-earth. I buy this book and her Pregnancy & Birth book for everyone in my family who gets pregnant.

For first time moms it really lays out everything you will need to be completely ready once the baby arrives.

It breaks everything down so you are prepared and keeps you informed of things you will need well into the first year.

I recommend this book.

This is the definitive book regarding developmental care in the NICU. The topics are broad, circadium rhythm to family centered care as respects developmental care. It's great resource to base your policy and procedure for developmental care in your unit.

A Fantastic Resource!

This is hands down, the best book I have ever found when it comes to planning and providing holistic care of the neonate and their family. Well organised, each article is not only full of detailed interventions, but beautifully illustrates the physiological basis and nursing process they are based on. In addition to laying a strong foundation for the most basic aspects of care of the newborn, special topics are approached with the same sensitivity and attention to detail found throughout the book.

I found the chapter exploring the role of fathers in the NICU especially powerful. A invaluable family and quality centered tool.

What a wonderful little book, in which I descovered a tresuare. True some of us don't know how to ask our Father confidently for what we need or are tell Him of what we are going trhough for no one understand better than Jesus Himself who was a Child at Heart all throughout His life. Miracles are waiting to be done if you come before this statue and pray confidently to your father who is waiting to her your words. Use it and live it today. Christ still performs beautiful miracles to those who insist their Father with confidence.

Baby Basics, November 26, 2000

I am a pediatrician and have been in general pediatric practice for over 25 years. In addition, I have four grown children. I highly recommend this book on general baby and child care and problem management. In my early learning years a book like this one would have been helpful to me both as a mother and as a pediatrician.

This compact little book is power packed with informative and easily readable tips for any mother, from the least experienced new mother to the veteran mother of a large brood. There is always something new to learn, and each child brings new and unexpected challenges. Dr. Baskerville's observations, comments and suggestions come from her long experience in interacting with mothers and children of every sort. It is easy to find your way around this book in order to find the answer to a specific question. It is also a comfort to just read straight through it, or through a section of it, for general information. Issues from taking the baby's temperature to how to position the baby for sleeping to problems with discipline are addressed. She also directs the reader to appropriate sources for further help if this is necessary.

In my opinion, this book, Baby Basics, should be a standard on every mother's nursery shelf. It is a ready reference of most of those little unexpected day to day problems, and it is a pleasure to read.

Dr. Baskerville's "Baby Basics" is a common sense approach to caring for babies and toddlers. She answers many questions new parents ask in a way that is easy to understand and to carry out. I am a labor/delivery nurse and am in a position of answering many of these same questions from new parents before I send them home with their babies. I am so happy to have a book like this to refer to and I happily recommend it to my patients. I am buying a copy for each of my own children to use as they become parents for the first time or even if they already have a child. There should be more manuals like this for parents. Thank you Dr. Baskerville.

More Hilarious for Earth mother's than earthlets, but gorgeous

This is english humour at its best! Dr Xargle is quite an affectionately, fluffy green Alien who teaches other aliens all about earth and the beings. While your children might not get the humour immediately, it is wonderful watching them slowly understand the humour. For instance earth grannys making wrappers for babies from the 'hairdo of a sheep'.

the illustrations are gorgeous with lots of little features going on in the background - they are richly coloured watercolours.

Sweet, fun, while your children might not understand immediately they know there is something more to it and really enjoy going back and looking at it to understand. EXCELLENT BOOK - in fact I would highly recommend all the Xargle books!

I had never heard of this book until it was given as a gift for my son. I have since shared it with every member of my family. It is a truly delightful book that is very well written. This story of an alien professor teaching his class about the strange lives of "earthlets" (human babies) must be at the top of anyone's list of children's books. (Although I have yet to find an adult who doesn't laugh outloud while reading it.)

State of the Art Review of Early Conceptual Development
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-27
How children make sense of the world is one of the most compelling questions in the field of psychology, yet since Piaget's downfall it has been difficult to see how an integrative theory on the topic would be possible. By assembling contributions by some of best thinkers in the field, Rakison and Oakes have made a significant contribution to the problem, one that is likely to define the empirical agenda for the next decade. This book should be required reading for all developmental psychologists.

Into the minds of babes

Ever wondered how we know what we know? This book is one of the best collections I have read that addresses this issue. The book was required reading for one of my grad courses in early cognitive development and each week we would read one or two chapters. Although some of the earlier chapters are a bit slow going, I found it overall to be an excellent collection of older research and theories as well as more up to date ideas. It holds together really well and gives you a idea of the bigger picture: what mechanisms are involved in concept learning, when do babies start to learn about objects and things around them, and so on. Every big "name" in the field is included, as well as some more up-and-coming younger folk. There are also some nice debates between the various authors in the book who have radically different views on how babies learn about the world; its clear that some of these researchers don't agree at all! All in all, I recommend this volume to scholars, students, and anyone who is interested in understanding the beginnings of our mental life.
