I teach 3 to 6 year old children, and they (and I) love this book. We had several children in class expecting siblings or with siblings newly arrived when I brought in this book. The book describes preparing for the baby, including mom's shrinking, sometimes even kicking, lap, and all the furniture and clothes the new baby will get. It talks about twins, much to the delight of my student expecting two sisters. The baby's homecoming, routines, noise and initial immobility are all discussed. There are several very touching passages, especially the one about maybe being able to hold the baby. This passage evokes peace and stillness, suggesting that you may even feel the baby breathe as you sit with her.

My students were captivated by the stunning photographs and the narrative, by turns touching, funny, and serious. Reading this book caused may of them to share true stories about their own lives and interactions with siblings. Even the younger children thought about first memories with siblings now a year or two old. The photos also show children of many different ethnicities.

This was a great tool for stimulating conversation with the children and was a big hit in the book corner. I enjoyed the upbeat message of this book as well. Even though routines change and diapers are smelly, parents still love you. Even though your baby might seem a little boring at first, the big sisters and brothers will get to teach this little one what they know. I thought it very positive for the children, stressing their competency and the importance of their role as a member of the family raising a baby.

I would recommend this book strongly for any classroom or expectant parents. Or any child aware and interested in babies. (One of my children who loved this book is a little sister, but talked about her baby cousins!)

I bought this before I knew I was having a boy. This book is genderless, with fun images. There is a space for mom and dad to write a letter to the baby, and it follows baby through the first five years of his or her life. I highly recommend this book.

I am pregnant with my first child and I have always felt that I had to have the cutest baby book. I searched through many baby books without finding the one I liked. Until, of course, I saw this one. The table of contents contained everything I wanted, such as a page on Mommy and Daddy, a place to put a pregnancy picture, and much more. I didn't know what to expect since I had ordered it online, but right when I got it and flipped through every page I knew this was the perfect baby book for me. If you want all kinds of colors and different creative designs for each page than this is the book for you. Every page has a different theme and design. It is really a beautiful baby book. This is definately not a plain, pink or blue book. It is perfect for boy or girl. It's wonderful!

This book is one of the funniest that I have ever come across! It is not just for Mommies - the concepts are applicable to Daddies, as well. Makes an excellent gift for new parents - all the friends I have given it to love it. This book provides plenty of laughs!

Hilarious!

This book is pleasantly insightful! If your baby hasn't already "done it", the time will soon come!! It's a definite reminder of how fun motherhood truly is! You realize that the your baby's actions are very normal and actually pretty funny! If you happen to be having a bad day, this is the book to pick up!

Amazing Find!

As an artist I was looking for something with substance, not that babyish stuff we are surrounded with. After all, my child will eventually grow up, but he or she will have a tasteful memory book that is part him/her and part of me. The artwork depicted is absolutely beautiful. And, as the previous reviewer noted, it's short. (I'm an artist, not a writer.) Well worth the hunt for a unique and artful gift for my baby.

A beautiful baby book, perfect for busy moms with little time to journal

I'm on baby #4 and like many moms, I haven't gotten around to completely filling out my second and third baby books yet. So I was looking for something that was both classically beautiful (not cartoonish or too sweet) and SHORT. The Met baby book fills those needs. This baby book only covers the first year. The book is about 16 pages and the cover doubles as a frame (you slip the picture in from the side). It's worth hunting down a "bargain" or "used" copy (without writing in it, of course). Art inside includes Cassat, Van Gogh, ukiyo-e (Japanese art) and other well-known artists' depictions of babies, children and parents. If you don't like some of the paintings featured, just paste your own photographs on top of them!

We borrowed this book from the Library and our 9 month old loved it so much we decided to buy it. Two months later and it is still one of her favorites. She would bring us the book, put it on the floor, and start clapping. It's a great book that I would recommend to anyone with young children.

My one-year old LOVES this book! She acts out what the babies are doing on every page -- putting on a "hat", making believe to brush her hair and teeth, clapping her hands, and waving "bye-bye". She is so proud of herself! I highly recommend this book.

Best book about the how & why of baby's behaviour
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1997-07-22
This book is a must for all people who have anything to do with babies. It explains why babies and parents behave the way they do and where this behaviour comes from. Myths like "babies can be trained" are explained and disposed of in a scientific, yet extremely easy to read and often humorous manner.

Read this and you'll know how to respond properly to your baby

A Compassionate Picture of Our Human Animals
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-06
Desmond Morris had a simple way of explaining things ... and presenting scientific evidence to help people understand ourselves. In this book about babies, we develop a compassionate view of the smallest of our species: their needs, their loves, what makes them laugh ... But what you could learn from the book is not just about babies. It is about us, even adults. Think why we laugh, think why we cry. Think what makes us happy. Think what makes us sad. We were all babies once ... and a baby is inside all of us from time to time. Most of Morris's books bring us back down to our awareness of our animal selves ... our innocence, stupidity, disguises, most basic needs and wants. This is just another one. Perfect for the parents who like to understand their babies in "principle", not just in a large set of rules of "dos" and "donts".

This book will teach kids that having a baby brother or sister isn't all that bad. This book shows that if children just wait, their baby sibling might actually be fun to play with when they are older.

Cute book with a sweet message for older siblings

This cute little book is ideal for an older sibling who wonders how things will change when a new baby comes to live with the family. The book also includes a very nice, appealing portrayal of breastfeeding and how older siblings will still get Mama's attention while baby is nursing.

This "must-have" manual for anyone considering or committed to breastfeeding is recommended for mothers, friends and family members, and community organizations, hospitals, and government agencies who interact with pregnant women and new moms. Well written and easy to understand, Ms. Barber's book is a culturally relevant how-to guide that offers information, resources, and encouragement to do one of the most natural, nurturing acts between a mother and her child. Far from preachy or pushy, Ms. Barber gently gives useful tips, real-life scenarios, and even a history about breastfeeding, particularly in the African-American community. A great baby shower present!

The best book for pregnant women!
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-27
This book provided a wonderful way to reflect on being pregnant and the many ways it impacts your life. While many books are available to discuss the physical changes and how to best care for your body, this one talked about the emotional, mental, and spiritual changes and how to care for your soul. Written in short "devotionals," the topics range from the silly (why you should feel ok in a bathing suit) to deep (handling fears of miscarriage). Since being given this book in my own pregnancy, I have purchased it for each of my friends who are expecting. Many first time mothers told me it also helped keep themselves focused on the miracle they were experiencing.

The perfect book for a mother-to-be!
