I am a stay at home who works nights for AAA so I'm kept pretty busy 24/7. This book helped me enhance my creativity and helped me to encourage my daughter's desire to learn. She now is 20 months old, counts to 10 on her own, sings the whole twinkle, twinkle little star song (missing a word here and there) and is starting to really grasp letters. She can sing up to the letter D. Not that the only reason is this book but it gave me some really great ideas to help her along. Some are very common knowledge but many are not. I am so glad I came across this and am about to go onto the twos book. I can't wait. By the way it's not all about work it's really a lot of fun as well.

Great for people in daycare.

Boy was that a great book! I read it so so much. Almost twice, but a had to cut it short because some guy was pissing me off and I had to chop his head off. But boy did Louise J. Kaplan get me pumped about adolescence. I'm so pumped I could just drop kick her in the face. Boy am I pumped! (fade to black with guitar music in the background)

A very readable and definitive textbook!

The mother influences the child's growth and development. That's pretty obvious. This book goes to the neurobiological underpinnings of this phenomenon, referring to several thousand studies, to show how the connection between mother and child actual influences the way the child's brain develops. It is a treasure trove of information on how the prefrontal cortex matures through interaction with the mother in the early stages of life.

As organizer of The Futurehealth Winter Brain Meeting, I have repeatedly recommended this book to colleagues who have an interest in frontal lobes, to attachment disorder, to the links between the brain and self control, violence in the schools, and even, in a recent on-line listserve discussion with a former president of APA, who suggested that first come values and then positive emotions. This books strongly suggests that first come positive emotions and experiences and these lead to establishment of a brain w hich is responsible and well regulated. This is no light read. But Schore is worth it. He's brilliant.

An exceptionally thorough, well written study

I found this book exceptionally engaging and fascinating. I have read much about the development of affective, cognitive, psycho-sexual, self and gender development, and wanted to learn more about the physiological and anatomical correlates to the observable behaviors in babies and children, and this book was 100% satisfying. The author painstakingly discusses Bowlby, Ainsworth, Spitz and other attachment theorists, providing the essential facts of affective and attachment development, and then in a very clear, understandable way, provides the neuroanatomic and neurochemical explanations of the observed phenomena. The book is intensively researched, and the ideas are developed in a sequential, logical and easy-to-follow manner. I recommend reading Robert Karen's book "Becoming Attached" first, to truly understand Schore's book.

I realy enjoyed this book and I think it would make a great film in the British style of "Cathy Come Home".

Brenda has 11 other published novels and her prose is flowing and readable. Her characters seem to be believable people all typical of the English Midlands.

"After Lucy" won the Lichfield Prize in 2001
and is a good, if serious read.

This book is honestly the best I have ever read. It has all the characteristics of a best seller, and I think that all people should have it on their book shelves. It is about a family dealing with a family loss, and the way in which it is written, the flow and style of the book is ideal. It is ariculatley created, and includes imaginitive descrpition and emotions that moved me in a way that no book has ever done. Buy this book, and your buying a classic.

This beautiful book is informative and fascinating. The information it provides on newborn development is superb, covering the first two years of life. Written from the newborn's perspective, the book celebrates the miracle of human life and growth. The presentation is clear and well-organized. Though I bought it for myself, it would make a great gift for new parents.

A wonderful gift!

Although I bought this book for myself, it would make a lovely baby gift! I have a three month old son, and a four year old daughter, and I found this book beautiful and informative! The photographs are lovely, especially to the eyes of a new parent who is falling in love with their own baby. The overlays of internal body structures (skeleton, eyes, etc) are fascinating. And in between feedings, baths, rocking and playing, I am also enjoying the amazing story of how a baby grows -- wonderful!

"Annie Stories" (and its sequel, "More Annie Stories") give parents a useful tool to help children cope with any situation that is difficult or painful, like divorce, bedwetting, teasing, jealousy, or moving to a new home or school. It offers a simple, healing technique anyone can use. I found it a joy to read, and have recommended it many times. Enjoy!

Every parent should read it. Enjoyable, valuable!

Adorable book

My daughter is 17 months old and I just bought this book for her a couple weeks ago. She absolutely loves it. I've been teaching her Baby Sign and she's picked up the sign for "bear" because of this book. (there are also other animals in the book that she likes to point at).

The story line is adorable. I think it is a good way to introduce the concept of a new baby to the family to a young child, without going into a ton of detail about how it happens. We are expecting a baby when our daughter will be 21 months, and right now she cannot grasp that I have a baby in the tummy, but I think with more reading of this book that she will be able to learn about getting a new brother or sister.

I haven't read any of the other books by the same author, I have only read this one. And as a stand alone book, I think it's wonderful.

Another Alfie Charmer

Our family adored the first book about Alfie (When Will It Be Spring?) with Catherine Walters' gorgeous and clever illustrations of the bears' wild mountain world. The same beautiful art is featured in this book, with a similar charming plot focusing on Alfie's young naivete - this time wondering where his new baby brother or sister (still expected) might be. I find this one perhaps one notch less perfect than the first, but it still instantly ranked among our favorites. Little text, but rich enough with content and visual complexity to appeal to a wide range of ages.

It amazes me how little known this masterpeice of storytelling is. I first read (and reread, and reread again) the book when I was in the second or third grade, and it always left me filled with a sense of wonder. The art is beautiful, and the story is told in simple, quiet, straightforward language that makes it almost, very nearly, possible to believe it's really true, despite the fantastical happenings.

Loosly based on the story of the Wild Child of Averon, Arnold is raised by wild ducks.
His adoptive human parents teach him how to be a human child, how to go to school.
A poignant story, with beutiful, energetic illustrations.

We've been giving Véronique Vienne's "Art of..." books as presents for a lot of occasions, but this one's our new favorite: we like it because it's perfect for both the future mother AND father; fathers are given their due in this book! (which must be unique in books about pregnancy). The text is Vienne's usual funny, apt, sometimes surprising advice; and the pictures are better than ever: there's one of two little girls dancing which is worth the price of the book; another, of a kids' party, shows one child watching on as another seems to be doing the twist--the look on the face of the first is enough to make anyone want to go out and make babies. So, if your kids aren't getting around to propagating as fast as you'd like, perhaps you should give them this book now. Who says you have to wait till someone gets pregnant?

I found this book to be both entertaining and inspiring. This book is NOT a scientific textbook on birth and childhood. Instead, it tries to convey what it's like to be a parent from an emotional point of view. It's all about bonding with your child and being there for her. It's a fun book but also wise. I'd recommend this as a present for friends' baby showers--particularly if your friend is really stressed out by the thought of becoming a mom!

I do not think if any other book has covered neonatal ventilation the way this one has. It is an essential item for every doctor caring for the newborn. There is no need to look forward to any other publication on this subject. It has dealt with every aspect of neonatal ventilation so well that it has become a gold standard.
