this is a beautiful guide on the first year - - in spanish. it has all the tips and questions and answers you always wish you had on hand from experts, and the academy of pediatrics, but it is so easy to read. it also has some moving perspectives from the author about her own experience that puts all the info in perspective.

my nephew's baby sitter is from spain and found it on our counter, and she picked it up to read, when i got back 3 hours later from dinner she was already half way through. she said it was the kind of book you always wished you had on hand when you had a question. i would recommend it to anyone who is a new parent or takes care of newborns and prefers to read in spanish,

This truly is the ultimate guide for baby-sitters. I have read everything I can get my hands on that covers this subject and this is the only book I personally recommend. It is extremely comprehensive and well researched. I am a former firefighter, paramedic and also a father of 4 young children. I created a safe baby-sitting program in the fire service that has trained hundreds of children to be better, more equipped sitters. I recently produced a video entitled "Safe Baby-sitting" that is currently selling all over the country. So it is with this background that I strongly suggest this book for every sitter. It is very easy to read and understand for all ages and gives tips that will help make any sitter's job easier. I especially like the tab for "Trouble". I take the role of the baby-sitter very seriously and I can see that the authors of this book do also. Keep up the good work!

This is a well written babysitters guide. Just keep in mind that many states require that babysitters be 13 years old and have a babysitting class. If you aren't sure about your state's requirements (or didn't realize they existed), call your local department of Family and Children's Services and ask them the home-alone and babysitting age requirements.

A Beautiful Book for Expectant Parents and Their Children

Review Date: 2004-03-19
When You Were Just A Heartbeat is one of the most poetic and tender explorations of that wonderful period of expectation before a baby is born. In this book, Laurel Molk's sophisticated illustrations and touching writing combine to help soon-to-be siblings understand and appreciate both the magic moments as pregnancy progresses and the excitement of waiting for a new baby. She uses the changing of the seasons to help explain the changes that will occur over the nine months of pregnancy. Ms. Molk takes illustration to a new level, integrating the sophistication of great design with beautiful fluidity of washes to create a masterpiece on each page. Every expecting parent and soon-to-be sibling should have this book to help them capture the magic and joy of this period.

This is a fantastic book and brings tears to my eyes when I read it to my son. School Library Journal said, "As such, this book doesn't further a child's understanding but rather speaks to the intellect and aesthetic appreciation of an adult." My response is to not underestimate what a child can comprehend. My son is still an infant so when I read it to him, it is for my own appreciation. But my neice loves this book. At 3 years old she was able to understand the flow and change of the seasons with the growing of a baby over 9 months.

Exquisitely beautiful, poetic and tender tale of anticipation and love, 'When You Were Just a Heartbeat' is a wonderful story to be read over and over again by parents and children. The glorious watercolor illustrations and the flowing verse evoke the rhythms of the graceful dance that develops naturally between a parent and child. Reading the story with my children recreated those special warm feelings that filled the days before each child was born. My children, in turn, have begged to hear the story over and over again as well as the many stories of their individual pasts that this book inspires. This book is now my new favorite choice for baby and birthday gifts!

I felt like I was back in high school science. All the things that I learned, flooded back to me. Now I feel a lot more confident in selecting foods for my kids and label reading. I'm very happy that I found this book.

As the first-time parent of a 17 month old child, I'm no stranger to nutritional eating for adults, but absolutely clueless as to the same for children... especially for the most finicky child (MINE!). This book helped to explain methodology of eating, essential childhood vitamins and nutrients, and age by age explanations of eating behavior and nutrition. I bought a few other children's nutrition books along with this one (such as the one from American Academy of Pediatrics), and I definitely found this one the most helpful. The chapter format allows you to read only the chapters that pertain to your child. Complete with recipes! I have yet to try them, but they look delicious.

Excellent reference for parents and childcare workers.

Wonderful month by month developmental points to watch for and several ideas for playing/interacting with your baby from the very beginning. I've been giving these away to new moms for several years now.
I also recommend the follow up books for ages 1,2,3,4 and 5.

I loved this book as a new mom and as an Early Intervention therapist. I give it to moms (especially a new mom) because it gives great activities, ideas, and fun tidbits about your baby on a month by month basis. It is in a simple format and easy to read a small chunk fast to get an idea how to engage with your baby or a new to try out. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Highly recommended reading (especially for new parents), Your Baby Treasures: Time Capsule by author Janet E. Reinhold is an explorative guide to the preservation of a parents cherished baby items. In the pages of Your Baby Treasures, the reader will find why some papers crumble over time and others stay nice; what makes a photo fade and what you can do to save it; how to keep baby clothes nice for years; why you can store a lock of hair but not a piece of cake; why many things need proper enclosures when stored together; what to consider when storing electronic media.

Practical and Inspiring....a loving tribute to your Little One!

Making a Time Capsule is truly a work of art, and who better to serve as Muse than your own baby-child?!!!

And I love my old baby stuff, don't you? Even in old photographs, I see the old patterns of blankets and flooring, old toys, old books, etc., and part of me is comforted. I love to look at these simple things, and remember being a baby. ;-) It's amazing how visceral and instinctive the memories can be, too. Later on down the line, not only will your grown-up child be thrilled and tickled, but your child's family and friends will recall their own childhood memories, too, as the capsule is opened and enjoyed.

Anyway, it's really interesting to read in this VERY READABLE BOOK about different materials and how long they last. I think my favorite section is "Choosing Baby's Items." I love the ideas...they are so creative!

I think the "Letters for the Future" ideas are so very sweet....and really really precious, especially if the parent might not be alive when the adult child opens the capsule. I think any parent would be giving their child a very beautiful gift to do this.

The Geneology section is also very interesting and gives me some ideas to trace my own and my husband's family tree.

All-in-all, a practical, easy-to-read, inspiring, and spunky little book that will guarantee the memories you save will be cherished and passed down to future generations.

Informative AND Enjoyable

Not only did I thoroughly enjoy reading this book, but I came away with a wealth of ideas for creating a time capsule for baby. I also found myself full of enthusiasm and confident that I now possess all of the knowledge required for successful completion of the project. I can strike out on my own in search of the correct materials to preserve my memories, now that I know exactly what I am loking for, or I can choose simply to order the materials individually or in "kit" form by using the order form in the back of the book.

I was hooked into reading the rest of the book when it began by explaining why I might want to make a time capsule in the first place. Then, without the use of confusing technical jargon, it clearly covers every aspect of time capsule creation from the memory selection process to the proper paper, ink, and preservation materials to use. There is a wonderful chapter on genealogy that provides just enough information to cover that important aspect of baby's life for inclusion in the time capsule.

This project could be undertaken by the parents OR grandparents of the baby. At the agreed-upon time of opening (twenty years is suggested), the "baby," who is now all grown up, is ceremonially presented with a wonderful gift of exquisitely preserved artifacts from the first year of his/her life. It is a gift of memory for the parents, but for the grown-up child, it is a gift of actually feeling, for the first time, what his/her first year of life must have been like--right down to world events that were occurring at the time. There can be no experience to compare with the unique chance to travel back in time and this book is the only ticket you need. It's well worth the price!

One of a kind--invaluable

I have a 4 month old baby. I'm a stay-at-home mom and while I know "everything is fascinating" to such a young baby, the fact is, we have to do something to fill in the hours. I do not think that certain exercises will help baby roll over faster, or that watching Baby Einstein videos will make baby smarter. I DO think that activities are invaluable for bonding with the baby.

Enter this book. This is the book I have been looking for! Other books with activities for babies tend to focus more on the toddler ages--aka after walking, or at least after crawling. This book has fun activities even for pre-crawlers--even for babies who cannot yet move their head! And the activities are grouped month by month. O fcourse, take these monthly guidelines with a grain of salt--every baby is different, and as another reviewer mentioned, crawling at 6 months is a little ambitious. Having just found the book, I've gone back and pulled some activities from the youinger ages as well.

Finally, while the activities may seem simple, even the most creative caregiver cannot think of everything. For example, in the 4 month section, Dr. Segal recommends placing baby on a blanket and picking up the blanket to cause them to roll over. I've been playing rolling-over games with my son, but never thought to use a blanket to roll him over, and it turns out he LOVES it. The activities mentioned have also sparked my imagine for other activities, and at the very least, are invaluable in the middle of the afternoon when baby is on napping strike and the day seems to drag on....

HIGHLY recommend this book!

We have a library of books to help us understand what we can do to best understand and stimulate our childs growth/development(i.e.- What to expect series, Brazleton, Baby book, etc). This is my favorite book since it covers what to expect each month (vs. grouping 6-9 mos developmental stage). In addition it has great ideas for games and play and is very easy to read. Only warning is that relative to other books this book generally is a bit aggressive in its projected milestones (assumes baby will crawl at 6 mos).

Great ideas for parents

I admit that I'm not the most creative person at coming up with games to play with my 10 week old son, and this book has been inspirational for me. The ideas about how to teach your baby about where his foot is, or how to sit up, or that bubble float, are terrific, and the look on his face when I do something the book recommends is just pure joy! My only recommendation is that you stay at least one month ahead, and do things from that month which you think your child is ready for.

This calendar is precious. I bought the 2003 calendar to enter my baby in the contest. The 2004 calendar was even better. The babies are adorable and the pictures are precious. My daughter loves to look at all the diferent babies and it is a great teaching tool as well. A great addition for the nursery or kitchen.

The cutest baby ever is in this calendar on May 22. Of course, I may be a little biased, since "Emma from Charlotte, NC" is my daughter. The other babies are adorable too. It's fun to see their expressions and the cute outfits they are dressed in. If you like babies, you'll love this calendar - too cute!

I checked this book out from the library and love it so much I am going to buy a copy for myself. Sheila Ellison gives so many creative ideas to use and do with your child, like games to play while waiting in line, bath time games, nature activities and so much more. Most of her ideas do not require you to go and purchase special craft items, they mainly require things you have around your house. Not only does she have fun things to do with your child in the book, she also gives suggestions on all kinds of other topics like starting a play group to how to display your child's art work. This book is a wonderful resource for parents who want to have fun with their children and need some great ideas.

This book was great for us because it provided advice on many aspects of pregnancy. Rather than just talk about the physical aspects of pregnancy Weiss describes emotional aspects as well. I especially liked the section on choosing a childbirth class, as my husband and I were overwhelmed with the possibilities available to us. This is a great book for anyone who is pregnant or wanting to be pregnant.

I loved that Robin includes her personal voice and perspective in this pregnancy and birth guide! It's a welcome change from all the objective, sterile drivel that passes for pregnancy/birth manuals. She also has a way of making you feel like birth is safe, natural and normal. It's like having your own personal doula and birth educator right in your own home! Thanks, Robin!
