This is a lovely picture book that talks about babywearing around the world. We are a babywearing family, so it's a nice addition to our collection, but it's valuable for any family that wants a beautiful picture book, or a book that talks about families around the world. Highly recommended!

This book is not only colorful and entertaining, it is very educational. There is a picture of babies and their family members carrying them in a variety of carriers and positions. The author took the time to write a sweet little story of what they do and how they live in different countries. It truly is a sweet little book that will encourage you to carry your baby and connect with someone else in the world who carries their baby too!

Awesome book great advocacy item!

My daughter loves this book, she loves looking at all the pictures and enjoys hearing about the babies and kids around the world that are lucky enough to be worn. Plus as a bonus she enjoys finding which people go where on the map on the inside cover of the book. This is one book I don't mind reading over and over again.

I'm a birth center; nursing; attachment parent.

I'm SO pleased I found a "crunchy" book which focus' on what I consider a more appropriate lifestyle for me and my family. The Dr. Sears family, Attachment Parent aficionados, have provided me with a sweet, family friendly, informative, non-threatening, loving book for my son!

He not only knows what to expect for his sibling, but he also appreciates that this is how we lovingly raised him.

I would highly recommend it.

This nicely illustrated book is written by a doctor and nurse. Along with notes for parents and caregivers to maximize a positive experience in bringing baby home; the accompanying text and pictures are a great springboard for preparing a child for the birth of a sibling. The illustrations are simple enough for a toddler to relate to. The book emphasizes things an older child can do like ride a tricycle, play on the monkey bars with dad and more. The last page of the book contains several resources for the expectant parent.

Bought this book at 4 months pregnant to start getting my son used to another sibling in the house. He loves this book. Not sure why, but it does a good job explaining that the baby will cry and take up lots of time. This was also recomended by a peadiatric website.

A must-have for a breastfeeding family with an older sibling
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-24
This book is, in my opinion, an absolute must-have and perfect gift for any family who plans to breastfeed, especially if practicing other forms of attachment parenting, like babywearing or co-sleeping.

This book makes me tear up every single time I have read it, to myself or my daughter. It's just superbly done. The text just assumes that baby will be breastfed, or acknowledges the possibility of pumped milk in a bottle ("when baby is older"). Baby is pictured fitting into the family's activities with the older child in a ring sling and sleeping next to Mommy in a sidecar co-sleeper. It was such a beautiful thing to show my daughter a book that reflected pictures of what her family looked like!

There are fantastic little insets that speak directly to the older sibling outside of the story, many called "What about me?" that address how the older sibling may be feeling and acknowledging those feelings are ok. For example, that it's ok for the older sibling to be still wanting and expecting time and attention from parents, and that it's ok to feel angry towards the baby sometimes (but not to *hurt* the baby). It reminds children that the sort of needs the baby has are the same needs they had.

The book offers advice to children on how to make friends with the baby, and gives realistic expectations of what a baby will and will not do. My favorite illustration in this area is the one of the baby squeezing the older sister's finger - this is the one "game" we had prepared our daughter that the baby *would* be able to play with her right away, so it was fun to see it in there!

There are also incredibly helpful passages about what the older sibling can do to be helpful and feel included. I especially like where it tells children they can help by getting into the car seat quickly when going out and staying close by at all times!

There is also some really helpful information and advice for parents and caregivers about helping siblings prepare for baby written for adults, as well as information about attachment parenting and more resources at the end of the book.

All and all, I give this book my highest recommendation for children and adults in families who plan to breastfeed a new baby.

I bought this with high hopes after reading the reviews. I was hoping it would be something I could give to my daughter when she was older. However, some of the questions (such as "how are you feeling about your postpartum body?" or something like that) are things that I wouldn't want her to read. Also, questions are very redundant from week to week. It's difficult to write on the left side of this book due to the spiral binding - a 3-ring binder would be better where we could remove pages, write, and then put them back. I also found it difficult to respond to some questions and on others, I ran out of room too soon. It just wasn't a good fit for me - I stopped using it after 2 months and am much happier with a more traditional baby book!

The BEST baby gift ever!!

I received this 3 years ago and wasn't sure if I liked it. Yes, some of the questions seem redundant... But! Your child changes that fast! This week, he loves peas! Next week, he hates them! It seems minor, but it's so much fun to look back and remember the little things that could have been lost to amnesia-due-to-sleep-deprivation. This was a great way to record the joys of baby- and mother-hood.

Since then, I've bought this for every new parent, and keep a couple on hand for baby gifts. Be sure to point out that there is a special area in the back for special events (holidays, etc.) I didn't have time to pore through it the first time, and almost missed it. Also, this could be really special if presented with a special toy or blanket or something that they can be pictured with each month to measure their development.

Great book and a "must" for gift giving

I have just purchased my sixth copy of this book for another friend. I received this book as a gift when I had my son and bought another for myself for the birth of my daughter and have given the book as a gift 5 times! It's easy to complete - walking you through every stage and first year event. It makes me reflect on things I may not remember if I was free journaling. And I love that I have my son's book to look back on and compare my daughter's growth to. The book is quality and the binding makes it easy to leave the book open to the week you are on. A must for any new mom!

My son is now two years old and having some developmental issues. During our screening process I was asked a lot of questions about his development as a baby, things no mother would ever be able to pull out of her head. Having such a well written journal that asked so many good questions was monumental in helping the professionals assess my sons past and current situation. Thank you Ms. Nelson for putting pen to page and providing this tool for me and my son. It not only helps me remember that first precious year, it is also helping us get a sense of where my son has been and where he is headed!

A bit repetitive

While I realize this is a type of "journal", I ended up wishing I hadn't purchased this item or had supplemented it with another standard baby book. There are no pages for the baby's firsts so I ended up putting them at the end of the book in the blank pages section but didn't think to start doing it until my son was 9 weeks old. There is a lot of repitition in the book as well, such as asking every week "What is your baby's sleeping schedule?", "Describe a typical day for you and your baby", or "What have you done for yourself this week?" I ended up leaving so many items blank because the answers didn't change on a weekly basis. Other things I ended up putting in the weekly "notes" section only to find it touched upon a few weeks later - Example: "Have you used a babysitter yet?" "Has your baby been sick yet?". Again, I realize this is a journal but I think the format is a bit odd and I see myself filling out less and less as time passes. The idea behind the book is good and the book itself is nice so I am giving it 3 stars.

I read this book years ago when I was a freelancer. One of the most helpful things to me then was Appelbaum saying that acquisitions editors WANT to find work to publish. I had always thought of editors as fussy people who want to find any excuse to turn you down. Appelbaum gave me hope.

Now that I actually am an editor, I know that what she says is true. Editors and publishers really do want to find good materials for their company to publish. They are not the enemy.

Really, this is a very helpful and encouraging book for writers.

This is the best book I've ever read on getting published. It's instructive, no-nonsense, and remarkably wide-ranging. Plus it doesn't waste time making digressions and idiotic "jokes." It sticks to the point, is witty and straight-talking. Ms. Appelbaum is knowledgeable and sympathetic to the business of writing. This is a book worth studying, not merely reading once. Thank you.

Then you MUST buy this book.

Judith really knows her stuff. This is an excellent place to start brainstorming, even if you think that you have "seen it all". Kudos to Judith for sharing her knowledge. As a published author of several books I KNOW the challenge of marketing to the public - and publishers - that each book brings. Keep a copy of this close by and reread it often. You won't be disappointed.

I am still reading the how to self publish section. I am a complete novice writer attempting to write a first non-fiction book. The book has opened my eyes to the pitfalls and made me aware of many details I would otherwise miss. Marketing being one of the details I needed to be more aware of.
I recommend the book highly.

I earn extra money as a contract reviewer for a number of publishers, periodicals, etc. It's always a pleasure to review a piece written by someone that has educated themselves on the process of publication. This book has it all!

Of particular note, Judith writes in her introduction (Initiation, p.7) "There's only one kind of help you shouldn't hire: A vanity press" -- and further explains this on page 88 under the title "Danger: Dead Ends".

This book is also a great resource for reviewers like myself. You will find many prospective clients.

This book is as timely and relevant today as it was when I was raising my now-late-thirties children. We say we love our children, but do we really know how to show it so they feel it? Dr. Campbell guides parents to this end in encouraging and practical ways. It's a pleasure to recommend this book these many years.

In an age of all kinds of self-help books, this one is simple and it SHINES. Written from a (subtle, non-infringing) Christian perspective, it is loaded with information about how anyone can immediately improve not only their relationships with their children (and therefore their child's well-being) but can also apply this information to all relationships. I think it would work wonders for teachers as well!

You know when you hear truth because it's so simple, and makes so much sense, that you think, "Of course that's the way it is! Why didn't I figure that out myself??" That's the feeling this book has all the way through. An unforgettable message that could change the way you live!!

The One Book Every Parent MUST Read
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-01
I have three children of my own, I was a school teacher, now I am a Pastor of Family Ministries and this is the first book I give expectant parents. I have read dozens of books on raising children, secular and Christian, this is the best. Let me explain.

It is simple.
Dr. Campbell does not get bogged down in the minutia of emotionally charged details. He doesn't preach about spanking, breast feeding, dating v. courting, negative and positive reinforcement, and the like. He tells you what is going on in a child's heart and allows you to determine the details.

It is foundational.
The principles he shares are so obvious that you are almost embarrassed that you didn't think of it. I found that not only did it help me be a better parent, it helped me deal with many of the issues that I had from my own childhood.

It is easy to remember.
I have read this book at least four times, but even after the first reading I could remember the major principles easily. They just make sense. The emotional tank; the difference between discipline and punishment; the fact that saying, "I love you," to your children does not make it real to them; these principles never leave you.

It is flexible.
These principles are not tied to one reading of Scripture or a single body of research. Also, they are adaptable to many different parenting styles.

It is powerful.
Every time I council a teenager, I ask them if they believe that their parents love them. They almost always say, "Not really. They only love me because I'm their kid. But they don't really love me." It astounds me because Dr. Campbell quotes teenagers in this book and they are almost verbatim what I consistently hear. The reason is that kids do not feel loved just because you put a roof over their heads and gave them the latest iPod. They need so much more. When the realization of the truths contained in this book hit many parents, they simply sob. They realize that they missed it and their children are paying the price.

Most parents are doing their best and simply do not know. No matter what the circumstances, it is not too late. Our God is a God of miracles and he can move powerfully in our lives. Read this book, believe God for his grace, and learn how to really love your children.

Stop what you are doing and read this!

Tons of books out there on child raising. I have been counseling military men and women for almost thirty years. Would that most, if not all, parents would sit down and read this. This would be a different world. Oh, and it also greatly helped me understanding how to make movement toward my children in love and not in anger and shame.

Balanced, biblical, and wholesome

I think this is an excellent book because it steers away from the external performace-orientation of some Christian books. These books sometimes almost view raising a child like training a dog. The whole focus is on getting the child to do the right thing, to obey. This title also steers away from the other extreme forms of parenting--the child is a delicate, fragile piece of glass that must be coddled, never contradicted or criticized, given whatever he or she wants, and praised for each and every thing they do.

Campbell moves to a more biblical focus. He shows that if you build a healthy love relationship, you can exercise appropriate discipline in love and children will actually appreciate it and come to view it as what it is--the most loving thing you could do for them.

Mini Masters board books are a fabulous way to introduce famous masterpieces of artwork to infants through eight year olds. I teach literacy skills to early childhood students and have found these books intriguing to Kindergarteners and 3rd graders alike. I have used them as a springboard to more indepth studies of Monet, Degas, and Van Gogh. They make wonderful baby shower and newborn gifts!

This is a great set for the money especially if you want to share art with your child. Some of these paintings I've seen in real life which is cool. I do wish the books were larger for easier viewing which is why I give them 4 stars only. I think my baby (8 months) would be more engaged if they were larger.

If you are buying individually, the Van Gogh and Matisse are bright and very eye-catching. The Monet is a bit murky and dark and the Degas similarly so although you gotta love the ballerinas. Of course, I prefer Van Gogh and Matisse anyway so maybe I am biased.

I shared this with a young mother recently. Her baby is due soon. She had fears about the birth, the process of mothering an infant, and so much more. "Changing Your World One Diaper at a Time" has the potential to ease those fears, and perhaps even to introduce a little laughter along the way. Marla Taviano discusses the joy of motherhood, but also the reality of being a mom. She encourages mothers to leave the image of perfection behind, and enjoy the journey one day at a time.

Changing the World One Diaper at a Time by Marla Taviano is a girlfriend to girlfriend look at how being a mother changes a woman inside and out. Taviano, who's also written the wonderful Is That All He Thinks About, tackles motherhood from a Christian point of view from preconception to the toddler years. Almost every woman dreams of holding a little bundle of joy in her arms, and sometimes motherhood is just like that, but those moments are few and far between. Most of the time it's feedings, diaper blow-outs, marathon crying sessions, and exhaustion. Taviano reminds readers not to lose sight of their marriage or themselves in being a mom. Her stories are hilarious and heart-breaking told by women who have been through it all and want to share their stories with other women who understand. She also tackles the tricky topic of moms attacking other moms for their parenting. Breast vs bottle, working or staying at home, etc. And pulling no punches, she lets us know that we need to be supporting each other, not tearing each other down. Amen! Postpartum depression, nursing, sex, Taviano covers it all (as usual) with humor and grace. This would make a perfect book for a first time mom or even for a mom with a few years practice in. I haven't had a child in diapers in a couple years (Thank God!), and I enjoyed every page.

My son recieved this book for his 1st birthday and it was an instant hit. It was a fun enjoyable read for him, but the flaps are super flimsy and he had torn most of the book apart within 6 weeks. He's 15 months now and the book has been out of rotation for some time. :(

My boys loved this book. It actually lasted through one and passed on to the next extremely well! Each flap puts a smile on my little one's face. Its a great purchase.

Great book - not just for the age limit.

We received this when my son was 15 months and he has loved it since. Initially, he just loved to lift the flaps, and it has handled his roughness. With the great pictures, we also use it to ask him to find an animal on a given page or within the whole book.

Love this book-first one my baby got!

This is the sweetest book-after many many readings I am buying a new one since most of the flaps are gone and been "loved." This was my daughter's first book when she was 4 months old-she's loved it since the first time we read it. Hope your little one enjoys it too!

So far, my 12-month old has liked everything I've made from this cookbook. At her age, I would say there are only about a handful of appropriate recipes for her... but I look forward to trying others as she gets older. I've especially liked the veggie recipes (wish there were even more for veggies) because they get her to eat veggies - the boiled carrots weren't doing it for her and I was getting bored of feeding her avocado every night! Anyway, the recipes are easy to follow and come out tasty (or so I can tell, in her opinion).

Good Book, but not all it's cracked up to be

Toddler Café is a very nice cookbook. If you are trying to get your kids interested in healthier menu items. My daughter (3) doesn't have a problem not eating healthy. I found the items to not be made in a timely fashion. I consider myself to be a learning chef and I have many ingredients on hand. If I was going to make these meals I would have to make sure that I pick recipes before I go to the grocery store. There are not many substitues for the type of things you need. If you don't have a problem doing those things then definately buy this book. Otherwise try something else.

This book has been very helpful. My 17 month old daughter is not a picky eater, but she gets moody with her food. One day she'd eat a plateful of green beans and grilled chicken, but a few days later she'd refuse to eat any of it, and throws them on the floor. I was running out of ideas for meals for her, because it seemed like she likes her meals to be different constantly. That was the reason I got this book. So far, she loves all the recipes that I've tried, and the recipes are super simple, healthy, quick, and easy.

I discovered Toddler Cafe through a post on 101 [...] and ordered it right away. I have a 13 month old and am trying to introduce her to a variety of foods, flavors and textures. So far, we've tried chickadee chick pea cakes and rainbow rice balls. Give the girl plain old carrots on a plate and they end up rejected on the floor, but mix them up with lots of other goodies in chickpea cakes and they get eaten with great enthusiasm. Oh yes and 'dad' thought the rainbow rice was pretty yummy too! The book is full of lots of creative and interesting stuff and I'm looking forward to trying lots of things!

As a former early childhood educator, I was a little dismayed about the trend to sneak healthy foods into children's meals. In my years of working with young children, I found that their palates are much more sophisticated than we know.

By preparing a limited menu and keeping them out of the process, parents unwittingly create picky eaters who'll explode at anything but chicken fingers, cereal, and peanut butter sandwiches. If you cook yummy healthy meals, they will eat them! Of course, some foods might take a few tries and incarnations, but isn't that how you learned to love avocados, brussel sprouts, fish, and other formerly yucky stuff?

I love that Jennifer Carden has such respect for the littlest budding gourmets. I really enjoyed flipping through the inventive and inspired recipes in this book. Can't wait to try them out with my favorite tiny chefs!
