This is a laugh-out-loud read.

This is a must have for new parents, and will eliminate hours of frustration interacting with your baby once you master the approach.
My wife has ordered a dozen copies for future baby showers.

Having two children of my own, this was always recognizable and often hilarious. Not that you'll learn anything from this book, but it sure made listening to my kids' attempts at speech more humorous. A perfect gift for new moms and dads -- or anyone, really, who's ever had kids. Or knows kids.

My wife and I read this book when we were expecting our first child. It was easy to read and very entertaining. It actually inspired me to write my own diary of our son's first year. I highly recommend it!

This book is terrific! My husband and I read it before we had our first child. Bob Greene got us super excited about the baby's birth! We tried to read it slowly, so we wouldn't finish much before we had out child. We give this book to all of our friends who are expecting a baby and they agree it's a must-read!

There are plenty of books that tell you what to do when a baby comes, but this is the only that I found that gave me an idea of what I could expect to feel like as a new father. As a husband, as a father, as a person inhabiting the planet, Bob Greene very simply describes how his life and outlook are changing during the first year of his daughter's life. He is surprised by what he can and can't do, remarks how his wife's focus has changed. As a reporter, he is surprised to find how his view of the world is different now that he has a small life in his charge.
Some of it is very funny: the helplessness he feels when his daughter first arrives home and how woefully unprepared they are (versus what they thought the instant before). Other parts of it are coldly chilling: Bob Greene's feelings about the mysterious Tylenol Killer anonymously killing people in the Chicagoland area mirrored my own concerns when I heard about the shootings at Columbine High School. Fatherly concern can only go so far and what happens when it's not enough?
My son is almost three years old now and my memories of the first year of his life are melting together into some generic feelings and a handful of anecdotes. However, I have a journal of my son's first year to look back on. That was the most wonderful thing about this book. Bob Greene is a professional writer, but this book made me feel like I could do something similar for my son and - surprisingly - it wasn't all that hard to jot down a little bit here and there as time permitted.
I like to think Bob Greene looks back at this book the same way I look back at my journal.

Favorite Book of Both My Boys

Review Date: 2001-11-03
My first child, "Big Brother" (now 8), had to read this one every night at bedtime. After 2 years of use, we nearly wore out the binding and bought another copy. Now "Little Brother", age 2, is working hard to wear out that one, too, insisting on it every night as well. The book is very simple, with a comfortable, familiar bedtime routine. Illustrations go well with the simple text, and the child in the pictures could easily be either a boy or a girl. I've also bought this as a gift for other new parents. I'm disappointed to see it's now out of print. I plan to save this one for both boys, to give to them when they become parents themselves - it's so special to each of them, it's a family keepsake!

The story is simple...the illustrations are cute, and that's why our kids insisted on it being read to them every night. The story is about getting ready for bed--taking a bath, putting on your jammies, and reading a story. The baby in the story cannot go to sleep until he finds his favorite toy(a bunny) which is something every child and parent can relate to and therefore makes the story so appealing. Sometimes, the most simple stories are the best. This one has become our children's favorite story from their early childhood.

will become your child's favorite bedtime book for years

Children love routines, and this beautiful little book shows the nightly routine of mom & dad getting the baby (could be boy or girl) ready for bed. Long before our son could talk, he could recognize himself as the baby in the story, and would point at all the pictures in the book. Denise Lewis Patrick's drawings are wonderful. It is now my daughter's favorite book, and I buy it for every 2 parent household welcoming the arrival of a first baby.

Martha has done a wonderful job of including beautiful heirloom sewing with all directions and patterns included. The pictures are breathtaking! This is not a good book for the beginner, however, - some heirloom sewing experience is necessary. But, its a great way to get inspired! And its HUGE!

This book is amazing! It's nice enough to be a coffee table book, and it actually is useful! The accompanying patterns are easy to read. It isn't too helpful for beginners, but it sure gets them interested!!

With Martha Pullen's research, this book is incredably historical to the time of the early 1900's. It is both beautiful and inspiring. As someone with experience in this type of sewing, I have found it to give me inspiration. It has been a springboard to design my own Christening and Blessing dresses in the heirloom style. I was taught these things at my own grandmother's knee and had forgotten the beauty of fine sewing. Sewing has gotten caught up in the hustle and bustle of how quickly it can be completed. These items do not show the lost art that demands that these items be passed on generation to generation as they were in the past. I hope to inspire others in my area to appreciate, even if only by observation, this precious and almost lost art when they see the results of my work as inspired by Martha's skills, enthusiasm, and requirement of quality.

This is a WONDERFUL album. I really loved the idea of putting the photos in by means of actual photo corners. It seems so sweet and delicate. And Keep-sakey :)
I was thrilled with the page illustration and excited that I had both the photo album and journal.
It's so sweet and vintage inspired that it automatically makes you feel like you really have something special. I think it is a GREAT gift and it's gender-friendly style is perfect for ANY baby!!

i bought the book when my second child was born. When he was one I gave the book to my daughter who was 3 at the time. It was just amazing to see her face when looking at the book and seeing that she was doing the exactly the same things like the story was telling. Perfect book for first time brother or sister.

My 33 month old son is not very interested in books but for some reason this title caught my eye and I tried it with him. He loves this book. He loves the illustrations and I think it captures his heart because of the relationship between the brother and sister. We have a daughter a year old and I think he relates to the pictures of the two mice playing together. He asks me to read it at least twice at a time when we pull it out. I definitely recommend this for new big brothers or sisters.

A Wonderful Ode to Older Siblings from a Grateful Baby!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-09
Told from the perspective of a baby, this ode to older siblings is a great antidote for the older sibling who is feeling neglected or otherwise having difficulty adjusting to their younger sibling(s). For the younger sibling, it also reinforces the value and benefits of the attention and love provided by an older sibling(s). Here, a pre-verbal young mouse "talks" to herself about all of the things she wants to say to her sister when she learns to speak understandable sentences. Pictures show the older sister patiently, sometimes reluctantly, helping her younger sister in a number of ways while the younger one "talks" about them gratefully. This includes the older sister feeding the younger one, sharing toys and treats, entertaining and playing with her, helping her learn to walk and sing songs and protecting her. The younger sister wants to more than merely thank her sister for all these things. She also plans to apologize to her for all of the mischief and trouble the she has caused her. Again, these misadventures are shown in accompanying illustrations. Told in very sparse text set against simple, comical illustrations, the pages leave lots of blank space for resting young eyes. Recommended for all children aged 2 to 6 and highly recommended for those with younger siblings.

This was book was so incredibly useful in the decision to vaccinate or not. I had read many books before which were either vehemently against or vigorously for vaccinations. I was at my wits end trying to find a source which presented the information in an unbiased format- this book does exactly that. The author has no agenda, other than wanting people to make informed decisions, and he presents the information fairly. There are no scary stories to play on your emotions, which many other books do present quite often. As a parent this book was indispenible and I wish every parent could have it in their home library!! You won't regret purchasing and reading this book!!

A very (_VERY_) rare objective look at this issue

Review Date: 1998-07-20
My wife and I figuratively nearly came to blows over the decision to immunize our children. It came down to the point where we _had_ to find an objective way to make a decision. So, as is our practice, we start reading books.

Only to find that every book written on this subject, on either side of the issue, is extremely inflammatory, biased, and inaccurate. I am not talking about a small sample of books -- the two of us read nearly a dozen books and several dozen articles. And our reading was doing more harm than good.

Until we found this book. This book finally gave us the objective information we were looking for, and we were able to make our decision.

The book is layed out with an introduction to general concepts, then a chapter per disease. Each chapter provides: 1) A description of the disease, with the range of effects observed from that disease, and the historical trend in the severity of outcomes from that disease. 2) A description of the efficacy ! of the vaccine (i.e. what is its effect on the number or severity of cases of the disease.) 3) A description of the range of other known effects of the vaccine, and the severity of those effects.

That is the essential material needed to make a decision about immunization, which is above all else a process of weighing one set of risks against another set of risks.

For those who wish to treat immunization as a decision, this book will help you do so.

An easy to comprehend overview.

Humor Helps When You're Taking Care of Toddlers

Review Date: 2004-03-02
My wife and I waited until our mid 30s to start a family. I read a ton of child care guides. Now I have a toddler and one more on the way, and this book is my favorite...because it's not so doggone serious. It's a very funny sequel (Keeping the Baby Alive came first), but it is not just a joke book. If you like wacky humor like David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, or a good Saturday Night Live sketch, you will love Keeping Your Toddler on Track till Mommy Gets Back. While you are laughing though, you will realize that there is substance behind the homor. That's the best part.

True, the wonder of your newborn may have worn off a tad by the time he or she reaches toddlerhood. But this book puts all the agony and ecstacy of todder care into perspective... as only a father could experience it. Best of all, you get more laughs than the law allows, and more than a little bit of wisdom to ponder along with them. I liked this book as much as Keeping the Baby Alive, if not more. An excellent sequel.

Keeping Your Toddler On Track Till Mommy Gets Back: The Toddler Survival Guide For 21st Century Dads by Walter Roark is a child-rearing guide written especially and specifically for fathers. Wry and humorous, with an emphasis on common sense approaches, Keeping Your Toddler On Track Till Mommy Gets Back is a "reader friendly" compendium of solid advice for dealing with little tyke's bodily functions, temper tantrums, precocious nature, and more. As enjoyable to read as it is practical, Keeping Your Toddler On Track Till Mommy Gets Back is highly recommended reading for any Dad who must keep an eye on the kids while Mom's away!

I exchanged the Humble Bumbles' Baby Journal for the Keepsake Of Love Baby Journal instead because the graphics and layout were much more appealing. The only other difference between the two is that Humble Bumble has envelopes to put the hospital bracelet in as well as baby's first clip of hair, but I don't mind pasting my own mini envelope in the Keepsake journal. The spiral bound makes the journal even more user friendly as it can accommodate all your keepsakes and still be able to close nice and flat. I think I will order another one just to ensure that my next child has the same baby journal in case this should be discontinued.

I received this journal as a gift at my baby shower and found it very easy to complete. There are a lot of pages dedicated to life before baby... which are great to finish before the baby comes! I keep a paper clip on the month-by-month update pages so that I can always write in a new achievement. I recently purchased a 2nd journal to make sure that both of my kids have the same baby book (and I know what things I need to keep track of to write in the baby book).

I received this as a gift from my sister and I really love it. After looking myself for a baby book I was disappointed in the ones I found and thought I would take my chances letting someone else pick it out...and I couldn't be happier with her choice. This book has just the right amount of information pages. It includes a page each all about mom and dad, a family tree, baby shower details, how mom and dad prepared for the baby, along with the other basics like the arrival, hand and footprints, milestones, etc. I really like the "Reflections from the heart" pages on different topics such as the day you were born, enjoying your home, your favorite things, how fast you have grown and others that allow the parents to write special notes to the child. It also has lots of room for photographs and includes a pouch for cards and keepsakes. It also comes with a growth chart that can be removed. It includes pages for the first, second and third years.

Overall, this is a very beautiful keepsake of baby's first years.
