It took me a little while to familiarise myself with this book, but once I understood the layout I found it to be one of the best investments I made in preparation for my baby.

In addition to the homeopathy information, this book contains practical advice for common issues encountered during pregnancy and baby's first year. It is all presented in a completely non-judgemental way.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to use homeopathy during their pregnancy, childbirth or for their baby.

A Must for all women!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-11
As a future midwife and current nursing student, my biggest fear for women today is the lack of education on their rights in regards to their own healthcare. Many women do not question the medications or therapies their doctors suggest, and unfortunately many health professionals are prone to the "quick fix." This leaves many women disappointed in side effects or unaware of potential damage occurring within their bodies. This book is a must for all women seeking true answers to their health options as well as options for their children. It is enlightening and informative, and it does not discount traditional medicine all together. It simply encourages women to take an active role in their healthcare and know that they have rights and choices during a very important time in their lives. Thank you, Miranda Castro for an educational, comprehensive, and non-biased reference!

Not only does this book give you very specific information on using homeopathic remedies, it focuses on emotional as well as physical symptoms (which is essential to homeopathy). The sections on labor and post-partum are some of the most informative I've read in my pregnancy. Detailed, honest, and non-judgmental, the book covers the myriad and often complicated emotions mothers may encounter during pregnancy and labor, and offers ways to deal with these issues naturally (often with simple practices like taking a bath). This book covers, in detail, several birth complications, and ways the mother can deal with these during labor. This is all done with very easy to read and matter of fact language. No foofy new-age stuff here. I wish every pregnant woman in the world could have the information contained in this book. If you are considering it, BUY IT NOW!

Wonderful explanation of a somewhat difficult concept
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-20
As someone new to the Reformed faith, infant baptism was a difficult concept for me to grasp, and even more difficult to explain to my non-Reformed friends and family. Rev. Hyde illustrates the correlation between circumcision and baptism in the context of God's covenantal relationship with His people. This book has been pivotal in my understanding of this important concept, and I recommend it highly.

The ideal introductory text on the subject

Although I certainly can't claim to have read every book on the subject, I am nevertheless confident that Daniel Hyde's little book "Jesus Loves the Little Children" is the ideal text for introducing the reader to the Reformed doctrine of Infant Baptism. He opens the work with a discussion of the presuppositions we bring to the issue, the commitment to scripture and desire to be faithful that can be found on both sides of the debate, and the need for Christian charity when examining the subject. The author then goes on to lay out a well structured case for the Reformed view of baptism, maintaining this same irenic spirit throughout. The reader will not find any innovative or unique ideas propagated here, but merely a faithful passing on of the historical, confessional teachings of the Reformed churches.

A Winsome and Cogent book on Infant Baptism

Author and Pastor Danny Hyde concisely and in a clear manner guides the reader in why we Baptize children.

I've learned a great deal from this book. This important teaching on Infant Baptism and of covenant family and community are fairly new to me and this book not only introduced, but explained Biblically--not by giving just proof texts and stopping there--but carefully putting together, and showing the reader the bigger picture of the whole jigsaw puzzle.

Also, the book gives you the whole enchilada--the important history of infant Baptism, a word to parents, an appendix on the Reformed Confessions and Baptism, and more.

Highly recommended!

A Different Book on Infant Baptism

Review Date: 2006-11-20
Books defending infant baptism are plentiful. Over the years, many authors have tackled this subject and offered many solid defenses. But this book by United Reformed pastor (in Oceanside, CA) Daniel Hyde is different and the differences make this book worth recommending.

First of all, Pastor Hyde has offered a compilation of the best Biblical arguments for the baptism of the infant children of believers. The arguments are offered concisely but with footnotes and references for those who wish to dig deeper. The skeleton is here, so to speak, but those who wish to see more meat on the bones will not have far to look.

Second, the book presents the Biblical arguments with a sense of church-historical consciousness. Hyde is especially sensitive to the practices and beliefs of the first sixteen centuries of the Christian church. With his references to Reformed liturgies and creeds, he clearly shows that infant baptism has nothing to do with "popery" and everything to do with the apostolic church.

Finally, so far as I know, this is the only book on the subject that deals with the practice of dedication found in some evangelical circles. Pastor Hyde points out that many of the proof-texts used to support dedication are the same texts used to argue for infant baptism. He calls for consistency, but also points out the far greater richness of baptism - a sacrament that speaks of the sovereign grace of a covenant-making God.

This book could profitably be used in situations (i.e. church planting) where God is bringing in people not (yet) convinced of the infant baptism position. It could also be used for those who, having grown up Reformed, have had doubts planted in their minds. If I would make one small suggestion for an improvement it would be the inclusion of the Bible texts with the "Reformed Confessions on Baptism" in Appendix 1. Aside from that small matter, this is an excellent explanation of "why we baptize children."

A Wonderful Book on a Misunderstood Subject

I just received my copy of "Jesus Loves the Little Children" and want to give it my highest recommendation. As a pastor, I have long been looking for something that presents the subject of infant baptism in such a way that walks people through the entire reason of why we do what we do. I have often found that books on infant baptism assume too much. They assume that the reader understands "covenant theology," when this is often far from the truth. As a church planter of a rather young church (4 years old) this will be a wonderful tool for me to place in the hands of those who think the Reformed doctrine of infant baptism is nothing more than a holdover from the Roman Catholic Church. To date, this is the best book I have seen that presents our understanding of baptism from a biblical, covenantal, and confessional perspective and also one that is very conversational and easy-to-read. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

As a father and a physician I have seen many guides written for new parents. I have been disappointed in most because of their redundancy and, often, lack of practical informatioxn. This book stands out as absolutely unique both in the quality and clarity of the writing but also because of its intuitive and almost uncanny relevance to the actual experience of being a parent. I would recommend no other resource to people who find themselves in this joyful and terrifying situation.

Being a teacher I have often utilized the KidsHealth website and found it to be an excellent and trustworthy resource. Now that I am an expecting parent I was pleased to find that the KidsHealth pediatricians recently published a guide for parents: pregnancy through age 5. The book is wonderful. The text is clear and easy to understand and the information is current. I especially liked the section on breast-feeding. I highly recommend this book to any parent or parent-to-be!

The KidsHealth Guide for Parents is a comprehensive and user-friendly guide that is a must-have for parents (the grandparents like it, too). It's filled with practical information that cover everything from basic baby care, breastfeeding & sleeping to routine health care and safety for kids through age 5, common illnesses, behavior and development, play, parenting tips, and more. A pleasure to read, and nicely organized - lots of interesting sidebars, charts, and brief sections that make the book easy to browse through and read in between feedings and changings (and the occasional nap!). Thank you!

This is a great book for new mom's! I have given it to several of my friends, and they all thank me profusely for the information. One friend took it to the first pediatrician's visit, and he applauded her for being so organized. She had all her questions right there, and a space to write the answers.
You can tell the love that went into writing it. Thank you for such a wonderful handbook for the most confusing time in our lives!

This book is a must have for any new mother. I was lucky enough to receive it as a gift with the birth of my first child. I referred to it often & it was very helpful. Items are easy to locate when you only have a few seconds to read. In addition, as my child grows older, I am able to continue using the book as a quick reference guide. It is a great gift for any new mother or as a gift for yourself.

I recently had the opportunity to read an amazing book called "Moms' Lifesavers, Tips to make Life Easier for New Mothers", by Christine Cohen and Joanne Tocci.

This is a wonderful resource for new moms or a refresher course for other moms.

Moms' Lifesavers starts with the basics before the baby arrives, and leads you through breastfeeding, preschool and beyond. I love the money saving tips and recipes for fun. Truly inventive! These two moms have done their homework, and it shows.

My personal favorite, is the milestone section. They have included a place for date and comments, from birth to age five. I am sure all moms want to complete a baby book with all the milestones, but that takes a lot of effort and TIME. Moms' Lifesavers has the perfect place to write about all those milestones and more. Everything right at your fingertips.

It is an indispensable guide you'll reach for every time!

Nine Months and a Day was my go-to pregnancy book these past nine months and a day! My prenatal visits started off poorly due to a lack of information, but once I had Nine Months and a Day to help guide me with questions to ask my midwife, I began to feel confident and prepared. I referred to Nine Months and a Day every month and found the exercises to relieve back pain and prepare for childbirth extremely helpful. The book is really well-organized and easy to read without being simplistic. My husband and I also took Nine Months and a Day to the store when we registered for baby paraphernalia; it was extremely informative. Lastly, I took this book to the hospital and read the "And a Day" part which gave me confidence about bringing our baby home. Thumbs up for Nine Months and a Day. If I ever have another baby, I'll read it all over again!

This is really a wonderful book! It is filled with information expectant mothers need--laid out clearly and comprehensively. I especially enjoyed the many lists of questions (questions to ask about prenatal tests, childbirth classes, baby doctors, etc.), which take a lot of the guesswork out of getting the information you need. I highly recommend this book.

I started my pregnancy with information overload, and received 9 Months & a Day as a gift. I was relieved to read a book that was clear & concise that answered my questions (which were many) AND helped me plan (the lists are great), but didn't overwhelm me with too-technical jargon or too many "what if's". I have kept this book next to my bed for the past 7 months (only 3 weeks to go!) and have read and re-read as we prepare for labor & delivery. I highly recommend this book for first-time moms, for those of us who think we want to "know it all" (and then burst into tears because it's just too, too much, on top of all the hormones!) and for parents who value direct, to-the-point writing. It's been one of our pregnancy's greatest resources.

When I first cracked this book open, I kept asking myself why the book sounded so old. I finally discovered that the book was 10 years old. I still read the whole thing because after the first few pages, it didn't feel strange anymore. I simply kept in mind that some things have changed but for the basics, I found it helpful despite the fact that it's originally a book published for German parents. I enjoyed the pictures depicting how to hold a baby, how to swaddle the baby and all. The book took nothing for granted which is good for a first time mom like me. I'm still looking for a recent book on baby care but for now, a big part of my appetite has been filled.

As a breastfeeding advocate myself, I wish that all young men and women were required to read this in high school, before parnethood. This book lets the reader see the conection between money, big business, and formula marketing. The book educates on the vast differences between artifical feeding and human milk, differences that the general population is unaware of. If you want to get fired-up over an issue, this is the book for you.

As someone who had to defend breastfeeding my child, I already had strong views about how society looks at the practise. The first time I read this book (first edition)I found the history behind it fascinating. What really alarmed me, though, was the truth behind formulas and what used to pass as formula! After getting the second edition, I was dismayed to find that nothing had improved in 10 years. This book is well researched an passionate. Be warned! After reading this, you may just become an activist!

I didn't understand breastfeeding advocacy until I read this book. Gabrielle Palmer covers all the bases on why we need to protect future generations from the mass marketing of infant formula, and how those products have become so prevalent throughout our society and the world. Covers the Nestle' illegal marketing tactics so thoroughly that I can't even consider buying any of their products. Background on the World Health Organisation's stance on the marketing of breastmilk substitutes made me realise what an all-encompassing public health issue breastfeeding is.

Already over ten years old, Gabrielle Palmer's eye-opening book pioneered some of the breastfeeding advocacy arguments being used by activists today.

Links obstacles placed in the way of breastfeeding mothers to the devaluation of the motherhood role which occurred during the growth of the industrial revolution.

Detailed history of breastfeeding and wet-nursing. Narrates the history of the Nestle scandal, in empathy with 3rd World perspective. A strong advocate for the rights of all babies to be nourished from the breast.

Counters anti-breastfeeding sentiment in today's society. Explains away sexuality myths which hinder women from breastfeeding in public. Terrific book for the breastfeeding professional who wants to boost their arguments!

After reading this book I felt joy, hope, contentment, and uplifted. I felt as though so many others have gone through this and made it, I felt that I could make it through this as well. I just did not feel alone anymore. I knew that there were people out there that persevered through the storm of loss and truly saw the rainbow at the end of the tunnel. I recommend this book to anyone that has suffered a loss, or knows someone that has.

If you are one of those parents (like me) who is tired of buying expensive plastic toys that require batteries and teach a single "skill", this book is for you. The author has a lot of excellent ideas of how to promote creativity and learning in your toddler with activities that employ simple, household items (like paper towel rolls) and inexpensive, basic toys (like balls and sand pails). Studies have shown that children learn better from these types of activities (where they are active) than the flashing, beeping toys (where they mostly watch and press buttons) and I love the idea of using simple items that are not bad for the environment as toys. We have had a lot of fun trying these out with our toddler, although, of course, not all of the activities are appropriate for all ages. On that note-- my only warning is that some of the activities use small pieces or items dangerous to a very young toddler, so parents will have to use common sense.

SUPER Ideas for Parents!

I wish I could give this book six stars instead of five! I have a 22-month-old daughter and wanted to find new, creative ways to interact with her while also teaching her important skills. I discovered this book while browsing on Amazon one day and was thrilled at the various, numerous ideas it offers! Best of all, you don't have to buy special materials to do most of these activities; they require simple objects you probably already have in your home. For instance, Miller provides recipes for homemade fingerpaint, shares instructions on how to make shape-matching games, and tells how to create a picture file to expand a child's understanding of categories. This book is a must-read for parents who want to stimulate their toddler's mind!

Really great ideas in this book for fun creative play. Some of the supplies mentioned are a little dated, but just reading it helps spark new ideas for things to do! I like that it helps me find ways to recycle things around the house--constant supply of new and interesting free toys!

More than we expected!

We purchased this book to get ideas for fun and educational things to do with our 2 year old twins. In addition to finding a number of activities to engage our children, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the first few chapters of the book covered developmental and behavioral issues. The book is well organized into categories of play that reflect the natural interests of a toddler. The author is educated in child development and seems to have deep experience with the ins and outs of toddler play. Great book.

This is a GREAT resource book!

I found this gem at the library, now I'm going to buy a copy for myself! There are so many great ideas in here! I've read other books on the subject but haven't been very impressed. These ideas are practical, inexpensive, and clever. It includes recipes for things like playdough, and instructions for making your own affordable alternatives. Karen Miller had spent over twenty years in the business when this was written and it really shows in this wonderful, thoughtful book.
