Lots of scarf patterns and none of them that I liked. In fact, I did not find a single pattern in this book that interested me. I'll probably try to sell it on ebay.

Lots of inspiration for life and for crochet

So far, I've made two sweaters from the patterns included in this book. The skill level is easier than indicated and the patterns themselves are easy to follow. I like that the author makes comments on several of the patterns - one being to make it in a color you might not choose, to stretch your comfort zone. Overall a good resource for patterns in a wide range of sizes.

This is a great book - clear instructions and some great funky accessories and beautiful clothes - I love the tangerine top. I'm so glad I got this book - the only problem is I just don't want to put it down! Any crocheter would be happy with this book.

Great book - something for everyone!

I was hoping to find more interesting, fun, sophistocated and contemporary styles, including intarsia, and a broader range of gauges and yarn types. I do not believe that the majority of patterns as shown would be purchased finished by a man.

Keep your man/men warm.

This book is perfect for the upcoming Fall/Winter season when the weather is chilly outside and you can sit in your most comforable chair or on our couch, watch a favorite movie and create a work of art for a Holiday gift or a Fall/Winter birthday. The designs are easy to do and you can always change yarn colours so that the gift will fit your special person to a "T".

Style-conscious women want their men to look as good as possible. This is especially true when it comes to their wardrobe. Drawn from the pages of 'Knitter's Magazine, "The Best Of Knitters: Guy Knits" is the collaborative work of co-editors Rick Mondragon and Elaine Rowley and showcases twenty-eight of Knitter's Magazines best needlecraft projects for men's garments ranging from hats and mittens, to gauntlets, sweaters and vests. The patterns include a range of sizes and a 'knot-to-fit' section. From pullovers and cardigans, to vests and waistcoats, these are knitted garments that can be worn by sportsmen, business professionals, college students, and gentlemen of leisure. Of special note are the chapters on Accessories and Choosing Color. Novices will find especially beneficial the illustrated directions, 'Technical Index', abbreviation glossary, and 'Specifications at a Glance' features. "The Best Of Knitters: Guy Knits" is a welcome and highly recommended addition to personal and community library Needlecraft reference collections.

I just started knitting with the express desire to make a beautiful yet uncomplicated sweater for my husband. I was extremely pleased to see that there were several patterns that I could do on my own and have excitedly begun my next project. I love this book as it is not just for beginners but allows me to keep improving my knitting skills.

Better than I expected

With all pattern books there are some patterns you like and some you don't. I hated the sweater on the cover of this book. Then the book came and I realized that the sweater wasn't too bad it was the small website picture and the "oh my goodness its halloween!" color choice that the knitter made that put me off. This book really grew on me.

Classic for costumers and knitting historians
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-13
If you love the look of sweaters of the 40's and 50's, this classic by Marion Foale will be an essential part of your knitting library.

There are vests, long cardigans, short bust-hugging "jumpers", kids sets, tennis sweaters. All with that long line and subtle knit-purl engraved patterning typical of the restrained era of knit design. One sweater is beaded. I've seen sweaters like these in vintage knitting books from World War II.

This is a great work for costumers, and for fashion students who are looking for classic lines in design. Also fun for knitters who want to make vintage-looking knits. Beautiful book.

True classics -- Not as chic as her current work

If you're anything like me, you see Marion Foale's extraordinary sweaters at stores like Barney's and think, "I could knit that $500 sweater, if only I had a pattern."

Well, this ISN'T the book for you. Perhaps the 1985 copyright date should have tipped me off, but these are true classics, not chic little body-hugging numbers with exquisite finish. Patterns include a couple of traditional cardigans, a sleeveless vest that's like a long tunic, and a number of pullovers. They have some of her terrific details -- for example, one of the pullovers has a garter stitch collar. But I wasn't looking for yarn-over eyelets in a diamond shape.

A nit: the book advertises something like 30 patterns, but many of them are variants -- ie, the same basic idea will be done as a cardi, a vest, and a v-neck pullover.

If Classics are your thing, you may like this book. If you're looking for fashion, pass.

PS -- if you find truly outstanding patterns for body-hugging sweaters that can take the place of jackets (rather than looking tarty) please let me know!

Great Scrap Yarn Vest
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-09
Have small amounts of leftover yarn in various colors? I made the scrap yarn vest in this book and I love it! I am planning to make another one with more scrap yarn to give as a gift. It uses basic stitches in an interesting way to create nice color contrasts. Beginners can do this project, and advanced crocheters will also enjoy it.

The other patterns in this book are okay - nothing really strikes my fancy, but they don't look difficult to make.

'80's Retro

I purchased this book thinking the patterns were recent. These patterns could be considered vintage or early 80's retro. It's great if that's what you're looking for. I was disappointed.
