This book is just great. You can make dozens of different socks in any size and she gives tips if you have "special needs" feet. For example, extra wide or narrow, etc. You will learn a lot from this book.

I highly recommend this book, but. . . .

Like other positive reviewers, I love that following this book, I can make a sock of any size using any weight yarn and that I can use a stitch from another source and interchange heels and toes from different sock patterns.

I share none of the others' complaints. Though I'm a novice sock knitter, the directions are easy for me to follow, with one big exception. I describe my problem in the paragraphs that follow, hoping to elicit advice from other readers. Nevertheless, I want to emphasize that in spite of this difficulty, I am impressed by the clarity and versatility of this highly informative book.

Shurch is unclear on where a heel flap begins on a toe-up sock. On page 59, she says knit "to desired length of foot minus heel measurement. See charts on pages 13-14." On page 13, an illustration indicates that the measurement goes up the back of the foot, a heel flap for a top-down sock. Schurch does not state whether this length is the same when the heel flap covers the bottom of the heel for a toe-up sock.

I tried her advice on page 11, "the heel flap is worked from the middle of the arch," and my sock was too short. Then, I referred to page 41, and knit "until sock reach[ed] anklebone." My sock was too long. Subtracting the excess length, I succeeded on my third try.

Using this book, I would not knit a toe-up sock for someone else, at least not until experience tells me whether the heel flap is the same length on the bottom of the foot as it is on the back of the foot.

The note in the front of the book sums it up: Be careful, this book is dangerous. If you are looking for a lot of unusual and wacky tongue twisters which are truly hard, you need this book. It's fun reading with young children and also a fun challenge for Intermediate to Advanced learners of English as a second language. The artwork is classic Suess, too.

My son read this book at the barber shop and loved it so much we ordered it for him. It is a great way to teach word recognition and promotes fast reading so they practice, then they enjoy challenging the whole family to read the book. As a homeschool mom I appreciate any book that encourages my boy to read! Love that Dr. Seuss

Great kids' book - needed this additional one because my 30-year old son decided to take the one I bought him as a toddler - to share with his children, and my daughter, his younger sister, wanted the same book for her children. I was very pleased to be able to buy another copy in decent condition at a reasonable price. Thank you!

The hard-back edition of Socks For Supper that i have is as old as i am, published in 1978. My 5yr old son absolutely loves this book. It's only 28 or so pages long, but it's easy for him to read and he loves to laugh at the silly farmer and his wife!
I'm thrilled that my son so loves the books i enjoyed again and again as a child.
I'm even more thrilled to add this book to the list of books he's read for his summer reading program for kindergarten next year!
I plan on picking up more Jack Kent books for my son, and i hope that his children are able to enjoy these books as well!

The previous reviewer provides a great overview of this book. What I can say is that this book had my entire family on the edge of its seat. We truly had no idea what was coming next, and simply found it nearly impossible to put down. Alan Snow has created a wonderful, imaginative, and witty cast of characters that are simply amazing. The story takes us in places that even those well-versed in childrens literature will find unusual and delightful. If you are looking for the unexpected and imaginative, I highly recommend this book.

Illustrations by the author are excellent also, the scenes are just as he describes them.

If you ask me, HERE BE MONSTERS! is no classic, not even a keeper. I tried reading this book to some kids, and they weren't even interested an iota. Even some English children visiting San Francisco turned their nose up at it, seeing it for what it is, a goodhumored attempt to capture some of the late Roald Dahl's popularity by marrying his "children come first" philosophy to the epic fantasy saga plot of Philip Pullman or whoever the latest upstart is. That's where the big money is, you see. I will say that three of the children (ages 4-7) enjoyed Snow's cross hatched drawings of the many inventivce creatures who populate his underground kingdom. Where I see sloppy sub-par Tenniel drawings, children see the many-shadowed intimations of adulthood drawing around them like night shades. I expect that Snow will bewitch some readers, especially those with visual acuity, while turning off some with his witless puns ("I'm a BIG CHEESE") and the incredibly longwinded storytelling--five hundred pages, and this is just volume one! Does he farm out the drawings to others? How does he get all his work done?

As for little Arthur, he was okay, with gumption to spare--but I hate gumption. Long ago there was a great novel for young people called THE GAMMAGE CUP by Carol Kendall--anyone remember this book? It had everything that HERE BE MONSTERS has and more (well, it didn't have MONSTERS' exclamation point, but it didn't need one) (indeed Grandma always said, never trust a book that tries to excite you with an exclamation mark)--only THE GAMMAGE CUP was a shapely 160 pages, so wouldn't make much of a splash in today's steroid driven market where the longer the better. In the meantime, I know a few kids who will be looking forward to the next installment of RATBRIDGE, and one of them has taken up drawing all by himself, after Snow, saying, "Kevin, look at Snow's people, the way they start out by being tic tac toe puzzles, then next time you look they have arms and legs and faces."

Sock Monkey's debut book and it couldn't be better! Sock Monkey proves to be a good sport in this delightful story and more importantly he handles his disappointment at not winning an important award with grace and aplomb. Even if the very young reader doesn't get the moral there is still plenty of cool graphic textures to keep them visually occupied. I love the stark yet colorful design motifs and the overall flow of the narrative. I hope Sock Monkey hangs around for many more years!!!

I was wildly attracted to the insane looking creatures on the book's cover and even more ecstatic when I found this kit offered; the obvious benefit that you can make a creature immediately - and I'm sure Mr. Murphy, the author, knew that once that was done, you'd be hopelessly hooked!

You'd think a sock would pose many limitations, but once you get the simple, basic techniques down, you're limited only by your own imagination. The slightest alteration in stitching and element placement (limbs, facial features, etc.) can produce fantastically varying results.

Important to me, a "stuffing novice", was the inclusion in this kit of the appropriate polyester fiberfill which is extremely soft and fluffy. (Michael's sells what I found was the best, Fairfield's Poly-fil Supreme.)

You really can't go wrong with the wonderfully detailed instructions and helpful tips in this book. And get this... he even provides ideas on how to use the leftover scraps from each project. I think at that point, I was ready to give him my first born. *lol* Once I finished my first creature, I couldn't help but giggle every time I looked at him sitting on the back of the couch. Each subsequent creature's personality blossomed quickly and amusingly. I originally wanted to make these as gifts, but I'm finding that I just can't part with my new friends!

I purchased this kit for my 11 year old son, as he always has great fun entertaining the family with his impromtu sock puppets. The skills needed to create the little guys are a little more advanced than I thought, so I ended up doing most of the sewing...but it still has turned out to be a fantastic gift. My son and I will plan a creature out, and once he is finished, he has something to cherish that we did together. We enjoyed learning about the author from he website, and wish him all the success in the world!

Martha is a moth that is getting ready for her birthday bash. As she cooks the "food" for her party she gets really hungry. She ends up eating all but 2 socks! When her friends arrive she is really sad she has no food to serve them. Read and find out how they cheer her up!

The books was well written and just the right length for a picture book. The pages had lots of great illustrations to talk about while reading.

My 19-month daughter loves animal books, and loves this book about Martha and her friends. Even though the distinction between moth and butterfly is still lost on her, I always get a giggle out of her when she realizes that Martha is eating clothing!

Both she and I love the wonderful watercolour illustrations, which remind of me the books I read as a child as opposed to some of the more disturbing drawings and cartoons children view today.

The story line is obviously meant for kids older than my daughter, but the colour and pictures keep even little ones entertained. I wish there were a simpler version of these characters in a laminated boardbook format for littler readers.

The reading was fantastic and the other parents and teachers were thrilled to have a book full of spice and imagination. The pictures were bold with creativity...a real feast for the eyes. I hope Martha has many adventures in the near future- as it was our book club shinning star thus far.

I was looking for some books to give my 5 year old daughter that she could do on her own with her 1st grade reading level. Well, these books definitely fit the bill. She ended up not even needing to read what it said, she simply followed the pictures and both her and her 4 year old brother (working with her) were bringing me all types of creative and neat hand animals and odd creatures they came up with their own imagination, all based off of this book. They really like it, it is good independent play time for them and for me as well! And the one thing that I really liked about the book is that if you run out of supplies, they are easy to replace, all you really need is to buy a huge bag of wiggly eyes and you are all stocked up again, or just have the kids draw their own eyes on the animals. So it's really nice that it's a "craft kit" and yet still usable to make more crafts after you run out of the supplies they provide.

Great for a 4 year old, and even older siblings love it!

My 4 year old son won this from a contest at the local library. He LOVES this book. It kept him busy for hours, and wants to use it all the time. You look at the picture of a butterfly or bat or turkey and take paper and put your hand down with fingers either open or a couple closed and a few open, or two hands in a different position and trace with the crayons provided or a pencil from home. It's self explanatory. You need to help with tracing depending on the age of the child or depending on if you are using two hands for the design. Then you have the child color and then glue (we used our own but it comes with glue) the pom poms on as a nose or tail or something. There are googly eyes to glue on also. The end result is a really cool picture. My son did like 10 on the first day he had it. This is good for girls and boys. For $10, it's great. We are buying one today for a toy drive and I would buy for a gift. Once you have, you only need to purchase extra pom poms and googly eyes, or substitute with other items for tails, noses, etc. from craft store or craft supplies at home. I have three boys 14, 9, 4 and a girl 12. This is one of those things that after 14 years old having children that you find is just classic. The 9 year old loved doing this too with the 4 year old.
